Participants apply what they learn by creating a 15-minute individual observational film, and by producing a short group project in production workshops under the guidance of their instructors. Peace building, Development & Conflict Transformation This in-depth course explores how conflicts can be, and are, resolved. The course also draws on a range of case studies to show the nexus between development, peace, and security. On successful comple- tion of this course participants will develop practical skills in conflict analysis and conflict transformation as well as a sound knowledge of development programs to build peace and to prevent and transform conflict. Participants will be exposed to practical models in managing complex security threats and situations. Certificate in Genocide Studies: Understanding and Preventing The study of genocide, a gross violation of human rights, can help us understand the conditions under which genocide, and other acts of mass violence, are likely to take place. It can help identify the warning signs of impending violence and it can suggest ways in which genocide may be prevented. The Genocide Studies Program at the American University of Nigeria is a subsidiary of the Center for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (CDMHA) and conducts research, seminars and conferences on comparative, interdisciplinary, and policy issues relating to the phenomenon of genocide, and has focused on providing training to researchers from afflicted regions, including Cambodia, Rwanda, and East Timor. The GSP also maintains research projects on those catastrophes, on the Nazi Holocaust, the genocides in Bosnia and Darfur, and on colonial and indigenous genocides. Combating Violent Extremists: Radicalization and Deradicalization Violent extremism — that which is inspired by foreign terrorist groups and that which is rooted in a range of domestic-based radical ideologies—poses a persistent and unpre- dictable threat to all countries. Despite concerted efforts to stem the flow, we have largely failed to stop people from traveling overseas to join jihadists groups. Countering violent extremism and teaching how one becomes radicalized and deracialized has become a key focus of the Center for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance’s (CDMHA) work to secure and protect countries. Forensic Criminology Forensic Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals for the purpose of addressing investigative and legal questions. “Forensic” refers to the application of specific acquired knowledge to a legal discussion or debate. “Criminology” is the scientific study of crime and criminals. Forensic criminology is a behavioral and forensic science. Forensic criminology is characterized by an integration of material from many sub-disciplines including forensic science, criminal investigation, criminalistics, forensic psychology, victimol- ogy, crime reconstruction, criminal profiling, and more.
