Situated on the beautiful 13-acre green campus of Plymouth Meeting Friends School, Summer Arts Camp is the perfect place for children to explore their artistic potential, develop their artistic imaginations, try new activities, and experience the joy of summer. We offer a dynamic arts education program with flexible scheduling for children ages 3 - 15.

Plymouth Meeting Friends SchoolLocated at the corner of Germantown Pike and Butler Pike in Plymouth Meeting, PA, Plymouth Meeting Friends School has provided Quaker education to children since 1780. Serving children ages three years old through sixth grade, PMFS features a program rich in the arts, offering drama, violin, art, art history and more. The campus has ample space for outdoor play, nature and science study, and art activities. The school’s Multipurpose Building includes an auditorium/gym that easily accommodates dance and drama programs. The campus also has an art studio, music building, computer and science rooms, library, and a space devoted solely to our youngest campers in Junior Camp.

Junior Camp: Ages 3-6 yearsIn this program our youngest campers participate in traditional early elementary school activities such as craft time, story time, play time, and water play. In addition, campers are exposed to a series of specialists who engage them in a variety of performing and visual art activities. Both full and half day programs are available. Campers may register for one week only or for the full seven weeks.

Morning Program, 9-1pm

Explorers Camp – 6 year oldsExplorers Camp is designed to bridge the gap between Junior Camp and Intermediate Camp for 7-13 year olds. Campers in Explorers Camp participate in Junior Camp activities and, for an additional fee, can attend classes of their choice from the Intermediate Camp program. See Camp Schedule.

PMFS Summer Arts Camp includes four different programming options:

Intermediate Camp – Ages 7 – 14Our Intermediate Camp is tailored for beginner, intermediate and advanced campers ages seven through 14. There are two program options to choose from, depending on your camper’s age (see Camp Schedule). Classes meet five times per week and enrollment in each class ranges from eight to 20 campers.

Full time campers in the Intermediate Camp select four to six classes per day and are eligible for Game Time during their camp day. Part time campers select two to three classes (back-to-back) per day.

The minimum registration for Intermediate Camp is three weeks.

Leadership Program – Ages 13-15Open to campers who are 13 years of age or older, our Leadership Program is designed to teach your child the art of leadership and provide him/her with leadership opportunities. Students learn how to care for children, conduct engaging and safe activities, manage basic first aid, as well as work cooperatively with the camp staff. This course is a prerequisite for senior campers who are training for our CIT program.

Tuition and Fees:Tuition and fees are adjusted for campers attending for fewer than seven weeks (3-6 weeks). The mid-afternoon snack provided to all campers is included in the tuition. The lunch program will be billed weekly to participating families.

Leadership CampLeadership: A seven week program designed for campers who are 13 years of age or older. Participants take the leadership class and two other classes of their choice (see Camp Schedule); for the remainder of their day they assist the camp staff. Lunch is provided. The fee for this program is $1,260.

Leadership II: Designed for young leaders who have completed the leadership program. Participants take three classes of their choice (see Camp Schedule); for the remainder of their day they assist the camp staff. Lunch is provided. The fee for this program is $815.

Arts & CraftsA course designed to expose our campers to a variety of art forms, such as printmaking, papier-mâché, and hand-built items in various media.

CartooningCampers explore the art of illustration through the use of caricature.

CeramicsCampers learn to hand-build original pieces and glaze their creations.

CookingCampers learn cooking fundamentals and create both cooked and non-cooked meals.

Design ArtsStudents apply their art skills to various aspects of design, including fashion, architecture, and product design.

Digital PhotographyCampers explore digital photography and editing techniques.

Digital Video & AnimationCampers learn video techniques and video animation, including editing their videos and burning DVDs.

Drawing and Painting In drawing, students work on drawing elements such as line, value, texture, proportion, and space. In painting, students use a variety of media and paint in the style of various periods of art.

Graphic ArtsThis course offers an introduction to the theory and practice of technology in the graphic arts.

Jewelry MakingCampers make their own jewelry using beads, clay, found objects, and “treasures” from home.

Sewing and KnittingCampers learn basic stitches as well as machine sewing and explore detailing and color patterning. This course will also focus on the two basic knitting stitches, knit and purl.

Web Page DesignUsing a web page design program, students create a class web site and learn to view and understand HTML. In this course campers will learn to prepare text, photos, and sound for web pages.

Visual Arts ClassesThe following visual arts classes are available to campers in our Explorers, Intermediate, and Leadership Camp programs. Campers can select one or more visual arts classes based on the offerings in each time period (see Camp Schedule, p. 14).

Broadway Song & Dance* Campers are introduced to show busi-ness through song and dance by two professionals in the field who team-teach the class.

Circus Arts*Develop hand-eye coordination with techniques such as juggling, diablo, plate spinning, and unicycling.

Drama*Through improvisation, role-play, body movement, puppeteering, and the staging of short plays, campers learn the basics of acting and production.

Jazz Ballet*Experience the fundamentals of dance through basic ballet and jazz movement.

Mostly ImprovThrough daily practice of verbal improvisation and the development of memory strength, campers learn individual and team communication as well as spontaneous performance techniques.

Music and ComputingCampers learn how to compose and arrange music using digital technologies. For campers with some knowledge of computers and an interest in music.

Puppet TheaterThis class combines the craft of puppet building and the theatrics of puppeteering. Campers will build different styles of puppets, develop characters, and perform.

Private LessonsCampers choosing a private lesson receive two thirty minute lessons each week, with additional supervised practice three times each week. Lessons are available in any stringed instrument (including guitar), woodwind, brass, percussion, piano, voice, and dance. No previous experience is necessary.

Rock BandMusicians of all levels will be included in Rock Band on traditional instruments. All music lovers and instrumentation will be welcome. Come and have some fun learning classic and modern rock songs on your favorite instrument. By joining Rock Band classes, campers will have the benefit of playing with other musicians. Practicing and playing with other musicians is highly motivational and very important part of music education.

Creative WritingCampers discover their imaginative voices through poetry, storytelling, letter writing, and word play.

Spanish Immersion Explore the customs of Spanish speaking people. Classes will immerse campers in the Spanish language through song, games, and conversation and life experiences.

Math SupportClass size will be small and instruction will be individualized. Curriculum will be created to suit individual campers' needs.

Reading SupportClass size will be small and instruction will be individualized. Curriculum will be created to suit individual campers' needs.

Swimming Campers enrolled in this class will travel to the Plymouth Meeting Recreational Center for swim time. Swimmers will be transported in the PMFS van.

RoboticsIn this course, campers build many robotics systems. Through this process they will learn mechanical design, construction, programming, and teamwork skills. In addition, the students will explore engines, construction, motion, and simple/complex machines.

Game TimeThis activity is available free of charge for campers who are enrolled for four or more classes. When campers are not scheduled for a class, they will participate in an organized game or cooperative sport.

Sports Center Students will learn the skills and rules of several popular sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball, football, lacrosse, hockey, and racquet sports. Class time will include scrimmages while emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship.
