Anderson, Laurie Halse The Impossible Knife of Memory. After years of living on the road with her father, Hayley Kincain has finally settled in one place—her father’s hometown. While Hayley struggles with fitting in to a new school, learning what it’s like to be a student and live in one place, she is her father’s main caretaker. Being a teenager in a new town is difficult enough but her father suffering from crippling PTSD makes Hayley’s life even harder. Hayley must find a way to care her for father while not enabling him, and being able to make and live her own life. (Realistic fiction) 

 

 Angelou, Maya.  I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Poet Maya Angelou’s autobiographical book describes her early life and childhood in the 1930s in rural Arkansas. A traumatic event when she is five impacts her early life and the novel describes how she gathers strength from her grandmother and community members to help overcome many obstacles in her life. (Memoir) 

 

 Bray, Libba. The Diviners. Evie O’Neill, a rebellious teen in a sleepy town, is shipped off to New York City after making trouble. She is to stay with her uncle, a very curious man obsessed with the occult. She navigates 1920s New York City, making unlikely friends, visiting speakeasies and holding onto a secret. Evie has a supernatural power that she attempts to keep hidden until a mysterious murder occurs—she realizes that her supernatural talent paired with her uncle’s knowledge of the occult may be what it takes to catch the mysterious serial killer. (Fantasy). 

   

Cline, Ernest. Ready Player One. 

The year is 2044 and Wade Watts is living in a junkyard, his only solace is when he can hideout and slip into the virtual world of OASIS. Wanting to escape his wretched reality, Wade, an avid gamer, embarks on a mission to find the hidden “Easter eggs” within OASIS and inherit the fortune promised to the winner by the eccentric creator. Upon finding the first clue, Wade becomes a marked man and must win the game to save his own life. (Science Fiction)   

  

Coles, William. Another Kind of Monday. 

Mark and Zeena find themselves on a strange mysterious quest throughout their hometown of  Pittsburgh using cryptic clues as their guide.Hoping to find an enormous treasure they find so much more. (Adventure)  

 

Dellaira, Ava. Love Letters to the Dead. Laurel’s first English assignment is to write a letter to a dead person. Her first letter to Kurt Cobain, her sister’s favorite, but she does not turn it in. Laurel chooses to continue writing to dead people­­Amy Winehouse, Heath Ledger, Judy Garland­­about the hardships of being a teenager and, most importantly, May’s tragedy. Laurel’s letter­writing proves to be cathartic and allows her to face her own tragedy and come to terms with what happened to May. (Realistic Fiction)  

 

 Dessen,Sarah. The Truth about Forever. Macy is not looking forward to a long boring summer since her boyfriend will be away all summer and her mother and her are grieving over the traumatic loss of her father. The summer turns out to be not what she plans and new people and experiences make it a summer to remember. (Realistic Fiction) 

 

 Green, John. The Fault in Our Stars. Sixteen year old Hazel has cancer and her parents urge her to join a therapy group for teens with cancer. Once there she gets to know an unusual group of new friends & one in particular is Augustus who she falls in love with. They both start to examine their  perspective on love, loss, and life. (Realistic Fiction) 

 

  Krakauer, Jon. Into Thin Air. Jon Krakauer narrates his terrifying climbing adventure to the summit of Mount Everest in May of 1996. Once he climbs to the summit, a dangerous storm starts to form and the lives that it affects will never be the same. (Non­fiction) 

 

Kreidler, Mark. Four Days to Glory: Wrestling with the Soul of the American Heartland.  In Iowa, the favorite high school sport is wrestling. Jay Borschel and Dan LeClere both three­time state champions have a chance in their senior year to join the sport's most elite group: the "four­timers," wrestlers who win four consecutive state titles. For Jay this victory would mean vindication over the skeptics waiting for him to fail. For Dan, the dreams of his hard­driving coach and father, and his own personal demons, another title is the only outcome that will be acceptable. (Non­fiction)  

 

Lu, Marie. Legend. The United States has now become the Republic. which is always at war. June is a 15 year old prodigy that is being groomed to be in the Republic’s military. Day is a fifteen year old who is from the slums and wanted as a criminal. Their lives cross and they find out that the Republic is hiding secrets no one should know. This novel is full of suspense, thrills and romance. This is the first book of a trilogy. (Science Fiction) 

 

Meyer, Marissa. Cinder. Retelling of the classic fairytale Cinderella with a twist. Linh Cinder is part human part cyborg who makes a living as a mechanic to support her stepmother and stepsisters. She has a chance encounter with Prince Kai when he needs to have something repaired. A plague hits the kingdom and her stepsister becomes ill. The stepmother blames Cinder for her sister getting sick and volunteers Cinder for plague research. Cinder finds out secrets no one should know and sets out to save the earth and hopefully win the heart of the prince. (Science Fiction) 

 

Pausch, Randy. The Last Lecture.  This book is about the reflections of a Carnegie Mellon Computer Science  professor who was asked to give a final lecture before he retired. The lecture was entitled: “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” and was given shortly after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The lecture he gave was not about dying but rather about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment, because “time is all you have… and you may find one day that you have less than you think.” (Non­fiction) 

  

Talley, Robin. The Lies We Tell Ourselves. 

In Virginia in 1959, an unlikely connection occurs during the civil rights movement. Linda, the daughter proponents of segregation, must work on a school project with Sarah, one of the first African American students to attend a former all­white school. While working together the girls face issues of racism and are forced to confront their own feelings about one another.  (Historical Fiction)
