SUMMER ASSIGNMENT: ENGLISH 12H Mr. Pinkerton [email protected] To prospective students and their parents: English 12H is an introductory literature/writing/analysis course, which begins to prepare students for the rigorous curriculum of Advanced Placement Language and English in their junior and senior year. Because of the extensive preparation needed to succeed in this class, summer reading and review is both necessary and desirable. Students and parents should be aware from the outset that the Honors English curriculum at Thunderbird High School aligns directly with the expectations of the College Board and Educational Testing Service with regard to Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition. Simply put, throughout the curriculum, students will be given instruction in correct literary analysis at steadily increasing levels of difficulty. My intention is to prepare students for university level work and, optimally, for college credit from their high school AP courses. Therefore, I actively recruit students who love to read and examine literature through critical thinking processes. Understandably, then, creative writing and opinion essays comprise a minimal function in the overall curriculum. The summer assignment is intended to serve as a review of the necessary grammar and technical skills necessary for class by following the assignment and deadline attached. The remainder of the assignment involves reading The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, completing the portfolio items included on the direction sheet, and reading additional books for pleasure throughout the summer. A digital copy of the summer assignment is located on my class website: https://sites.google.com/a/guhsdaz.org/pinkertonenglish12h/ or simply do a google search for: Pinkerton English 12H It is always best to use the digital version rather than the paper one. I will often add notes and hints over the summer. The digital version is always the most up to date. I am committed to the success of every student in Freshman Honors English and pride myself on guiding students toward the rewards found in learning to examine literature critically. This four year process ultimately culminates in completing a strenuous and rewarding college curriculum. Thank you for encouraging your freshman to join my class. I look forward to working with him or her. Please feel free to call me with questions or comments at (623) 9158900 ext. 7132, email me at [email protected], or leave a message with the counseling office during the summer and they will have me call you back. PLEASE NOTE emailing me is the most efficient means of contact. Sincerely, Ron Pinkerton English Department 1

General Directions: Summer Assignment English 12H Mr. Pinkerton

[email protected]

A digital copy of the summer assignment is located on my class website: https://sites.google.com/a/guhsdaz.org/pinkertonenglish12h/ or simply do a google search for: Pinkerton English 12H It is always best to use the digital version rather than the paper one. I will often add notes and hints over the summer. The digital version is always the most up to date. The student in Honors English 12 is expected to be an avid reader and learner. In addition to the novels you are reading for pleasure this summer, please take time to either checkout or purchase The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver and complete the following assignment. Although checking out The Bean Trees is acceptable, purchasing your own copy is beneficial because you will be able to underline and make personal notes in the margins. Often, new or used novels can be purchased at minimal cost on the Internet or at used book stores. Please note: Incomplete and/or inadequate summer assignments will result in an automatic transfer to nonhonors English 12 class during the first week of school. The hallmark of an honors student is exceptional work completed on time. Plagiarism (copying two or more words from any outside source) will NOT be tolerated. In my eyes, thorough, thoughtful, work where your original ideas shine through is far superior to reading the same old, worn analysis that resembles everyone else’s (especially Sparknotes, Book Rags, Cliff’s Notes, etc) ideas. You will be submitting all of your work through turnitin.com, it is an excellent resource to help you make sure that your work is your own. This assignment is a first impression; make it count.

All portions of the assignment must be submitted through turnitin.com. The instructions for creating an account , as well as submitting assignments are

located in the back of this packet. DEADLINE: The ENTIRE summer enrichment assignment is due on the first day of classes Monday, 8/10/15 by 8:00 am. All portions of the assignment must be submitted to turnitin.com by then.

Part I The Bean Trees: Summer Enrichment Assignment The following assignments must be submitted to turnitin.com: Summaries (in your own words) Write a $10.00 summary for each chapter as you read the book. See the next page for directions. Submit all seventeen summaries in one document to turnitin.com. You must also include a word count for each summary. Be sure to save a copy for yourself. Character Identification (in your own words) Identify and describe EIGHT of the main characters and/or significant minor characters in the novel. Organize your identifications using the 5Ws method as listed below:

Who is the character? Include his/her name and titles, if applicable. What is he/she like? Describe his/her physical appearance, personality traits, relationship to other

characters, and details that bring the character to life. Where does this character unfold? Explain the setting(s) within the book where he/she lives and/or

spends most of his/her time. When does this character most impact the plot? Describe the scene(s) in which this character affects

the plot the most. Explain why these scenes are important overall. Why is he/she important? Finally, explain the impact the character has on the book’s outcome. Be

sure to go beyond superficial descriptions and describe how he/she influences the action of the book. Identify any roles the character ends up playing (ie the leader, the antagonist, etc).

Thorough descriptions are always preferred over brief or inadequate ones. Submit all eight character identifications in one document to turnitin.com. Be sure to save a copy for yourself.

Poems (original; in your own words) Choose TWO of the characters from your character identification section and write at least one poem from each of their perspectives. In these poems, make sure to highlight important themes from the novel to illustrate your understanding of it. After each poem, include a short explanation of the themes you incorporated and why (50100 words for the explanations). Submit both poems in one document to turnitin.com. Be sure to save a copy for yourself. Plot Line (in your own words) Create a plotline of the book and accurately place at least one major event at each point along the line. Include exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution (denouement). Include a visual presentation, either selfdrawn or otherwise, as a symbol of the climax of the novel. Also, include a short explanation of why the picture/illustration appropriately fits the novel’s climax. Consider the mood at that point in the novel, the event itself, and/or the significance and/or outcome of it (50100 words for the explanation). Submit this in one document to turnitin.com. Be sure to save a copy for yourself. Personal Response (in your own words) Write a one or two paragraph response to the novel. Explain specifically what you did or did not appreciate about the novel and how you related it to your own life. Do not write “It was good,” “It was stupid,” or anything else to make your response seem unscholarly. Submit this in one document to turnitin.com. Be sure to save a copy for yourself.

List of Resources Lastly, at the end of each document, create a list of ANY sources you utilized in creating your summer assignment other than the novel itself. This list should include ALL print sources (Internet websites, books, etc). Include where you may have found any graphics/pictures, too. Each entry should include:

Name of the resource Exact web address (websites) OR copyright information (print materials)

NOTE Failure to include a List of Resources when outside resources are utilized will result in dire consequences, including a failing grade on this assignment. FYI: Future assignments on The Bean Trees include: Expository Essay Be prepared to write an essay based on the novel during the first few weeks of school. Test Be prepared for a test over The Bean Trees approximately two weeks after school begins.

$10.00 Summary Directions: For each chapter, your goal is to spend $10.00 without going over. Each word is worth a dime (.10c). *Remember, you must include ALL of the important information, so choose words wisely! To ensure that you haven’t blown your budget and overspent, count your words. Then, multiply by 10.

Number of words ________ x .10 must be = or < $10.00

To count your words on Microsoft, follow these directions: Highlight the portion of text you want to count by clicking and dragging the mouse over the

area simultaneously. With the section highlighted, click on Tools on your menu bar. Find Word Count and click on it. The second count listed will tell you how many words you used. At the end of each chapter summary, type the word count for that summary.
