Welcome to the Summer Arts Festival! From the Executive DirectorAs I anticipate my third Summer Arts Festival, I am mindful of how indebted I am—and we all are—to those amazing folks who had the inspiring idea to create this event 47 years ago. It is an honor to carry on a tradition of celebrating the creativity that abounds in the Land of Umpqua.
Roseburg’s beautiful Fir Grove Park is the perfect setting for a three-day event offering a joyful experience every step of the way. Talented craftspeople and artists share their unique creations. Some of the finest musicians in the region fill the air with a vast array of musical styles, from country and Celtic to boogie and jazz. Food vendors will have you regretting there are only three meals in a day.
The festival is the perfect family outing, with kids’ arts activities, artist demonstrations, displays of amazing local talent on the Family Stage all competing for your attention. There is also a wonderful community art project that everyone can participate in.
All of this comes your way for a $3 admission fee—or $10 for families of four or more. You wont find a better value for your dollar anywhere else. I look forward to seeing you at the Arts Festival and sharing the fun.
Sincerely,Andrew Apter,Executive DirectorUmpqua Valley Arts Association
How Artists Were ChosenThe exceptional art which adorns the Festival is the result of a strong evaluation process. Artist applications are reviewed by three jurors who assess the images submitted by the artists along with an artist statement.
Each type of art is evaluated separately, and the artists remain anonymous to the jury. Ju-rors take into consideration quality, presenta-tion, originality, technical ability and booth display. Jurors can review the artist’s images and statement and may revise their decision before their final submission. After much dis-cussion, the individual scores are tallied and the top scores in each category receive an invi-tation to show in the Festival.
Congratulations to all the Art Vendors who were accepted into this year’s 2015 Summer Arts Festival. Sandee McGee, UVAA Gallery Manager, Jury Facilitator.

Live ArtTHE NEWS REVIEW KIDS’ ZONE
Community Art Project This year’s public art project will be a large-scale weaving installation. Arts Festival visitors are invited to lace a piece of fabric into a frame to create a whole picture. Only at the festival’s end will the sum of all our parts be revealed! Together we can make something beautiful that will be on display at the Festival for years to come.
Weaving is one of the oldest surviving crafts in the world, dating back to Neolithic times — approximately 12,000 years ago. Even before woven fabric became prevalent, the basic principle of weaving was applied to interlacing branches and twigs to create tools such as baskets, fences and shelters. Our installation also serves as a tool — to teach us about time and community. Please join us for this celebration of our commu-nity. We need each and every one of you to make it happen!
Photo BoothPose as models in our photo booth reminis-cent of 1930’s American Gothic painting by Grant Wood.

Our sponsors recognize the importance of supporting the arts in our community. They have chosen to invest hard earnings from their businesses to sponsor the Summer Arts Festival.
13 It Takes A Village
Community of Roseburg – recognizing the importance of art education and exposure as a priority in community investment.
Volunteers - Roseburg and Douglas County are renowned for the volunteer spirit which makes events such as the Summer Arts Festival possible. Larry Safley, current Chair of the Summer Arts Festival committee, Doug Holloway, past Chair of the com-mittee, and Dick Worthey, former Board president and the person who knows every detail about the festival, contribute at least a combined 200 volunteer hours on their own during Festival week.
An additional 150+ volunteers donate their time to ensure a fabulous time for everyone. Be sure to thank the volunteers during your time at the Arts Festival. Without them, no Fes-tival!
UVAA Staff and Board of Directors – The work begins many months before the show goes on. Behind the scenes, a dedicated Summer Arts Committee begins planning and doesn’t stop until after the event when we meet to discuss what worked, didn’t work and what can we do to improve the experience for everyone. The booklet committee was comprised of UVAA staff, volunteers and board members.
Events of this size are
possible due to major
community support of the arts.
We have so many to express
our gratitude and apprecia-
tion…this is just the beginning.
Thank you...
