Summer Adventure at Marblehead Charter 2018
About Our Program
Join us for a summer of fun and adventure! All programs are open to the community. Our programs are designed with kids in mind to foster exploration, creativity, learning and fun! Come meet new friends, try something new and follow your passion in classes designed for students entering grades 4-9 led by our experienced instructors and program staff.

Summer Adventure Program 2018 Schedule Our Summer Programs will run between June 25 - August 3, 2018, including the program weeks listed below. Please view our full program brochure for specific dates and times for each program.
- June 25-29, 2018 - July 16-20, 2018 - No programming July 2-6, 2018- July 9-13, 2018 - July 23-27, 2018 - July 30 - August 3, 2018
Summer Extended Day Options are available: - Early Drop-Off, 8-9am $10 per day - Late Pick-Up, 3-4pm $10 per day Summer Adventure Program Policies:
● We reserve the right to dismiss a participant from the Summer Adventure Program if their behavior demonstrates disrespect for other campers or staff.
● You have the right to review our policy on staff background checks, health care and discipline policies by contacting Marblehead Charter.
● The Marblehead Charter Summer Adventure Program must comply with regulations of Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the Marblehead Board of Health.

What to bring:
Summer program participants should plan to bring a water bottle and a morning snack each day and dress
appropriately for the weather. All students participating in programs that continue past 12pm should pack a
lunch in addition to a morning snack. Refrigeration and a microwave are available.

● Each week students will participate in a variety of games based on individual interests.
● Students will increase their skills, demonstrate teamwork and receive the opportunity to lead games.
● Examples of sports offered are basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, football, wiffle ball and many other fitness oriented
activities.

Summer Guitar Workshop Entering Grades 4-9, Beginner-Intermediate
July 9-13 Monday-Friday 9am-12pm $200
● This workshop is great for beginners-intermediate students ● Beginning guitar students will learn basic techniques of how to
play the guitar including chords, strumming, learning popular
songs, and even some blues and improvisation
● Intermediate guitar players will expand their skills with advanced chords, scales and progressions, blues and
improvisation
● Have fun with musical games and learning to play songs individually and as a group ● All students must bring their own guitar each day

Piano Lab Entering Grades 4-9, Beginner and Advanced
July 9-13 Monday-Friday 12pm-3pm $200
● This workshop is great for beginner to advanced students
● Students will have the opportunity to: ○ Build piano skills quickly ○ Work on reading music, building repertoire,
theory, and sharing music
○ Explore improvisation, composition, and work on learning by ear ○ Practice any genre, such as classical, jazz, pop, country, rock, and more! ○ Have fun with games, listening activities, and videos ○

Songwriting Workshop Entering Grades 4-9, Beginner and Advanced
June 25-29 Monday-Friday 9am-12pm $200
July 16-20 Monday-Friday 9am-12pm $200
● Students will learn and use the tools of music theory, song form, and lyric writing exercises to
create and develop expression through song
● Studies will include melody, harmony, rhythm, phrasing, song form, lyrics and exercises in creative
writing
● Students should have some experience with a musical instrument
● While this is class oriented, each student will be working at their own pace and have individual help from the instructor
Instructor: Erinn Brown, Marblehead Charter Enrichment Teacher
About The Instructor: Erinn Brown is an accomplished singer/songwriter, guitarist with 3 well received Cd's of original music. After graduating Berklee College of Music, Erinn moved to the North
Shore where she performs (with a band, trio, duo or solo) and teaches private music lessons.
Private Instruction Available:
Songwriting, Voice, Piano or Guitar lessons are available in the afternoon hours between
12:30pm-4:00pm

One Week Play Workshop - “The Witches” with North Shore Children’s Theatre Entering Grades 3-8
June 25-29 Monday-Friday 9am-3pm $225
The North Shore Children’s Theatre has teamed up with the Marblehead Charter School to offer a
special one week “The Witches” Theatre Workshop.
● “The Witches” theatre program is geared for beginning actors as well as those with experience ● During the week while rehearsing for the play, participants will learn a variety of acting skills
including how to create a believable character, stage speech and diction, comic timing and
theatre techniques with a focus on teamwork and gaining confidence
● The finale of the program is a play production of “The Witches” based on the well-known story written by Roald Dahl about a young boy and his untimely encounter with a group of witches,
who turn him into a mouse.
● The finale performance will take place on June 29th at 3:00pm at the Marblehead Charter School for friends and family.

Minecraft Modding Entering Grades 5-9
July 23-27 Monday-Friday 9am-3pm $200
● Learn how to create modifications for the Minecraft game
● Learn to program these mods in the Java programming language
● Small class size
● Campers should have their own Minecraft account, available $26.95 from https://minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft/
● If campers would like to bring their own laptops it would help if they meet the following specification as building, running and debugging Minecraft can require a fast computer
○ Laptop manufactured in the last 5-6 years ○ 64 bit version of one of these operating systems
Windows 7, 8.1 or 10; macOs OS X 10.10 or higher; or Linux with kernel 3.17 or higher, i.e. Ubuntu 15.04, Fedora 21, etc
○ Dual or quad core CPU / processor which runs at 2.5GHz or higher ○ 4Gb of memory, preferably 8Gb or more ○ 20Gb of free disk space to install development tools and Minecraft builds ○ Having Minecraft 1.12 preinstalled would be a plus but not necessary.
We will be able to provide a number of desktop and laptop computers so having access to a personal
laptop will not be a prerequisite.

Criminal Science Investigation Entering Grades 4-6
July 30-Aug 2 Monday - Thursday 9am -12pm $120
● Working in teams, participants will use observation and investigation skills to solve “The Case of the Missing Statue”
● Uncover clues using chemistry, fingerprinting, fiber analysis, chromatography, and deductive reasoning.
● Test your hypotheses and solve the mystery!

Hogwart’s Summer Adventure Entering Grades 4-9

● You’re a Wizard now and on our first day we’ll sort everyone
into houses and the fun will begin
● Create your own magical wand ● Join our Spells & Potions class and prepare for a duel ● Craft your very own Patronus ● Together we’ll examine the Harry Potter movies and enjoy a lively Harry Potter reading

Dungeons & Dragons Adventures Entering Grades 4-9

● Go on an epic journey through a magical world where you’ll go through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more
● Design your own character and tell the tale of your adventure through their eyes
● Collaborate with your fellow adventurers and storytellers and work together to solve problems
● Learn how to navigate the system that governs the way your character interacts with the
fictional world
● You’re sure to enjoy the Lore and Monsters and Heroes and Triumph that make up the dungeons
and dragons universe
● Beginners are welcome
