Non-examined assessment (NEA) arrangements

Summer 2022

On the 16 of June, Ofqual published the outcome of the 2022 NEA and field work consultation. This set out their proposals to carry forward the

arrangements which were put in place in 2021 to take account of public health restrictions that could have had an impact on the way the

assessments in these qualifications could be conducted.

Ofqual will permit exam boards to accept mock-ups and/or clear and detailed intentions of prototypes and also permit demonstration of using

machinery, tools and/or processes. These changes will impact NEA produced for 2022 assessment in the following ways:

• Mockups and/or clear/detailed intentions of prototypes will be accepted in place of final prototypes, through the making of proof of concept

models.

• For GCSE, Grid 3.2 in the Component 2 CAB will not be assessed for 2022, to reflect this change.

For A Level, Grid 10 in the Component 2 CAB will not be assessed for 2022, also reflecting this change.

• The demonstration of using machinery/tools/processes will be accepted through written, photographic and/or video evidence.

Please note that centres are permitted to continue to manufacture high quality outcomes where it is safe to do so, and in line with regional and

national safety guidance, but for equality for all students, marks awarded for Quality and Accuracy will not be included in assessment of the

component.

Advance information on the focus of the content of the exams

Summer 2022

10

Ofqual/DfE joint consultation has now concluded for arrangements in summer 2022 exams. For Design and Technology, it is agreed that advance information on the focus of the content of the exam will be made available to centres.

The principles for providing advance information

1) The advance information should not be so detailed that students are able to memorise answers to write in the exam.

2) The advance information should not be so extensive or specific that it would damage a student’s progression to higher level qualifications in the subject.

3) It should still be possible to differentiate between students on the basis of their performance.

Advance information on the focus of the content of the exams

11

• Advance information can be used from the point of release.

• It can be used flexibly by centres to achieve its purpose of supporting revision. It should not, however, be used to narrow teaching and learning.

• It can be used by teachers in supporting their students’ revision and referred to by students in their revision and final examination preparation.

• It cannot be brought into the examinations.

• It will not be at a level that allows questions to be predicted or answers prepared. Preparation should continue to focus on knowledge and understanding that can be applied appropriately in the context of unseen examination questions

It is advised that teaching and learning should still cover the entire subject content in the specification.

The JCQ guidance have further information and examples of how the Advance Information may look.

Advance Information will be released by 7 February 2022.

However, the DfE have also confirmed that should the impact of the pandemic worsen, Advance Information could be issued earlier in the academic year to help teachers focus their remaining teaching time.

We will update you on the timing of the advance information release once this has been confirmed.

When will the advance information be released?

Advice on how to focus revision with the use of advance information• Cover all content in teaching and learning so that students have secure knowledge of the content of the

GCSE/A level Design and Technology, Component 1.

• Use the advance information published to focus revision on the topics.

• Practice answering questions from past papers and draw links between questions and the advance information topics.

• examWizard can be utilised to focus revision on Advance Information topics. For example, topic tests can be created in examWizard to help learners revise the topics from the advance information.

• Additional assessment materials (GCSE and A level) from summer 2021 can also be used, as these breakdown questions from past papers into topics from the specification content.

• Past papers and SAMs are also available separately for use. (See next slide)

• Examiner reports are also useful to analyse and can provide tips on how to best answer the questions in the paper.
