How to use this booklet

The Master’s programme in Economic Behaviour and Governance (EB&Go) emphasizes the main research areas of the faculty at the Institute of Economics. The objective is to provide students with profound knowledge in behavioural economics with a strong focus on applied research questions. The program is designed in such a way that students have considerable freedom to choose their courses.

• There are no mandatory courses that students are assigned to on the Masters Program. To obtain

the degree, students have to

o Acquire the credits in 12 modules (see the description below).

o Pass requirement courses (if necessary)

• Every module offers a range of choices over the semesters.

• By combining different courses across modules, students have the chance to design their

transcript in a way that fits their career ambitions.

This booklet is designed to help students choose their courses and plan their studies.

Description of the Modules

Each module has an aim and covers a specific aspect of the program. Following is a description

of the modules.

Module 1 A+B Research Methods: These modules introduce students to advanced empirical

research methods in economics. Students are trained to apply these methods to test theories

and analyse economic policy problems and governance issues.

• Module 1A (Econometrics) focuses on econometric methods.

• In Module 1B (Selected Methods), students can choose between courses on different

methods (e.g. qualitative methods, experimental economics, simulation techniques).

Page 5: Summer 2021 - uni-kassel.de

5

Module 2 A+B Economic Behaviour: The focus of these two modules is to obtain knowledge in

advanced modelling techniques of agents’ behaviour in various economic contexts. Students are

introduced to a number of different theories in the field of behavioural economics; they learn to

apply empirical research methods (in particular, experimental methods) and to explore extra

thoroughly the factors that drive human behaviour.

• Module 2A (Models) focuses on theoretical models in Behavioural Economics.

• Module 2B (Applications) introduces students to the application of these models to

analyse human behaviour in specific economic contexts (e.g., entrepreneurship, public

economics).

Module 3 A+B Governance: These modules concentrate on the field of economic policy and

governance issues. Students learn to apply empirical research methods and theoretical concepts

to address questions of economic policy and governance. A special emphasis rests on the

application of approaches from behavioural economics and on public choice concepts.

• Module 3A (Institutions and the Public Sector) focuses on modern concepts of governance

and institutions in the public sector.

• In Module 3B (Policy and Market Dynamics) students are introduced to governance issues

in specific fields of economic policy with a special focus on market dynamics.

Module 4 A+B Advanced Topics in Corporate Governance, Consumer Behaviour and

Management: Advanced concepts and methods in the field of business administration are the

main focus of these modules. Students obtain analytical skills in the field of corporate

management, consumer behaviour and consumer research.

• Module 4A (Corporate Governance and Management) concentrates on advanced topics

in the field of corporate governance and management (e.g. human resources or supply

chain management).

• Module 4B (Consumer Behaviour and Management) introduces students to advanced

issues in the field of consumer behaviour and the subsequent management tools (e.g.,

dialog marketing).

Module 5 Seminar in Economic Behaviour: In this module, students have to apply their obtained

knowledge on a specific research question in the field of economic behaviour.

Module 6 Seminar in Governance: In this module, students have to apply their obtained

knowledge to a specific problem in the field of governance. The seminars focus on contemporary

challenges in the field of economic policies and governance.

Page 6: Summer 2021 - uni-kassel.de

6

Module 7 Additive skills: The module provides students with the opportunity to train their key

skills. Students can acquire the knowledge and skills to execute and control interpersonal and

intercultural communication and interaction. In addition, they can gain insights to theories,

concepts and methods of other disciplines. This module is introduced to inspire students to look

beyond the scope of economics, develop their personality and broaden their labour market

opportunities.

Module 8 Master Thesis: Each student has to write a Master thesis. Before starting the Master

thesis, students must have completed all requirement courses and acquired at least 54 credits in

modules M1-M7.

ABCs of choosing courses

Step 1: Identify your requirement courses & plan their completion

• Many students have to take a number of requirement courses. They are named in the

admission letter.

• Identify all requirement courses you need to take and record all requirement courses in

table 1.

• Use the list of yellow and blue list of courses (see appendix) to find out when these

courses are offered and learn more about their content. Record these course

characteristics in table 2.

Note: These lists do not contain German-taught courses. If you are capable of taking

courses I German language, you will find a number of additional courses for both lists on

eCampus.

9

Step 2: Get a very general overview of what courses are offered in each Master module

• Take a look at the green list for courses (see appendix) to find out about the different

courses offered in the different modules. In the first semester, you should focus on the

core modules numbered M1A/B to M4A/B.

• Look at the orange list (see appendix) to find out which of these courses are offered in

the current semester.

Note: These lists do not contain German-taught courses. If you are capable of taking

courses I German language, you will find a number of additional courses for both lists on

ecampus.

Step 3: Choose your courses for the first semester (yellow and orange list only)

• For students who have some requirement courses to cover, make it a priority to register

for some of these courses in your first semester.

• We suggest completing modules 1A, 2A and 3A along with the bachelor requirements in

the first two semesters. This will give you a feel of studying in Germany and prepare you

for the future semesters.

• We advise you to take lectures rather than seminars in your first semester – especially if

you have limited experienced in academic writing.

• In case you do take a seminar in your first semester, make sure you are familiar with the

topic of the seminar before you register for it.

• Acquaint yourself with the course material before the course begins.

• We encourage you to go to the first sessions of all courses you think about going to. Take

one or two sessions to get an impression of the courses before you choose the courses

you want to acquire credits in.

• Make a decision on the courses to take in the first 2-3 weeks of the semester. (For

seminars, you are probably asked to make your choice in the first session).

• It is advisable to choose courses worth between 24 and 30 ECTS in your first semester.

• Students planning to take German language courses may consider filling that course as

module 7. Please note that these require early registration (and possibly also a fee).

• Table 3 can be used to list the courses you decide to take and find out about its formal

characteristics.

Page 10: Summer 2021 - uni-kassel.de

10

Step 4: Plan ahead (green and blue list only)

• Keep track of all the modules you have completed and those that are still open.

• Table 4 can be used as a tool for this purpose.

• Use the blue and green list (see appendix) to make a preliminary plan of courses and

module you want to complete in the upcoming semester(s).

Note: These lists do not contain German-taught courses. If you are capable of taking

courses I German language, you will find a number of additional courses for both lists on

eCampus.

• If you are planning to take seminars in the next term (e.g. in modules M1B, M2B, M3B,

M5 and M6), keep track of the lecturers’ announcements for the upcoming terms.

Seminars are usually open for registration in advance.

• Do not worry about the master thesis at an early stage of your studies.

Additional hints

• If you lack experience in academic writing, we strongly advise you to take the course

“Academic Writing in Economics” in the first or second semester. It is offered every

semester and its credits count towards module M7. In addition, you may consider the

Academic writing courses at the Language Centre (ISZ: Internationales Studienzentrum).

• You will have to register for the courses and examinations on e-campus. In some cases,

requirement courses may not be listed there. In this case, please write an email to the

Examination Bureau at [email protected] including your student details for

registration.

• We encourage you to discuss your choice of courses with fellow students.

• We also encourage you to work in groups during the semester – especially when

preparing for the exams.

• In case of confusion related to your choice of course or any advice regarding the same,

please contact the student tutors.

The course reviews and familiarizes students with the economic analysis of pollution and pollution control. The students learn how to identify the efficient amount of pollution abatement, which instruments can be used to regulate pollution and which practical difficulties can arise when designing effective regulations. The course takes a more advanced look at the difference between flow pollution and stock pollution, the consequences of uncertainty about abatement costs and pollution damage, and the economic valuation of pollution damage. We also discuss international environmental problems, with climate change as the most important example, and what the opportunities and limitations are for solving these problems through international cooperation.

This course is supposed to be fun! You should learn about cross-cultural differences and similarities, about its antecedents and its consequences. But at the same time you should teach and tell your experiences and examples from your travels or your home country. In sum, this course is about communication and exchange. Consequently, it’s absolutely required to be open-minded, to be willing to share and to be courageous to try out and experience new things. As a next step common grounds for global business will be presented and implications for negotiation processes deduced. This course will deal with many relevant topics to give you a feeling about ”what matters” in cross-cultural interactions in work life… and maybe inspire you for your future career.

Innovation drives growth and job creation in modern economies. A major share of the new knowledge on which innovation is based derives from scientific research. Understanding the economics of science and the processes in which new scientific knowledge is transferred to the economy is therefore of major importance to explain and possibly improve innovation performance. At the same time, knowledge is a good with rather unusual properties that raise various types of externalities and incentive problems. With the system of Open Science, a specific set of institutions has developed over time that address these issues. Studying Open Science therefore helps economists to better understand the working of competitively self-governing systems. Before this background it is little surprising that a burgeoning literature deals with the economics of science. The course will provide an introduction into this strand of research. The course combines a lecture part with seminar sessions in which students present and discuss selected topics from the economics of science and technology.

Field experiments in economics allow to estimate the impact of social programs or policies in the naturally occurring environment using random assignment to the treated and the control group. For instance, using this method one can understand if helping people to escape poor districts does help them to start a new life or if entrepreneurial education increases start-up rate.

In this seminar, we put focus on the recent developments in forecasting methods regarding Big Data Analyses. It has been shown that a better forecast can be achieved rather through the combination of different models than by the use of one individual model. Many theoretical and empirical studies have indeed demonstrated that certain application of different combinations, so-called “model-averaging”, of individual models can dominate individual forecasts in many different areas of economics and finance. In one such model-averaging, each individual forecasting model is represented in the final forecast combination with certain weight which has to be estimated. Consequently, numerous methods have been proposed for the estimation of optimal weights in model-averaging that can be constant or varying with time. Moreover, methods from machine learning will be considered as well.

In recent years, we have seen an enormous increase and rising interest in academic research using field experimental methods to address questions across a broad range of topics in environmental economics including individual climate protection, the management of energy or water consumption, traffic management, and resource conservation. At the same time, field partners from policymaking and business start to appreciate the benefits that field experiments can have to design and evaluate policy programs and investigate individual behavior. This seminar is designed to provide an overview of the design and the analysis of field experiments in environmental economics. In the first part of the course, we will focus on methodological issues surrounding the design of field experiments and subsequent interpretation of the results. In the second part of the course, students will present and discuss selected examples where field experiments have been used to (i) test predictions of theoretical models and/or enhance our understanding of the factors that drive individual behavior and to (ii) evaluate whether and why policy interventions work.

This direction of econometrics examines cross-sectional micro data, i.e. data from persons, households, firms, but also from regions, countries, or even supermarket-scanner data. Empirical analyses with microdata and thus microeconometrics are often not based on quantitative continuous dependent variables with an unrestricted range, but on other types of dependent variables, i.e. qualitative (categorial) variables as well as quantitative variables which are not continuous or with a restricted range. This course provides an overview of the most important estimation methods and test procedures in selected microeconometric models. The focus will be on the practical application of the main concepts by analyzing real datasets using the statistical software Stata. Thus, the course consists of two parts, i.e. a lecture part and an integrated computer course.

Marketing communication is likely to become a mutual beneficial interaction, if, and only if, the customers are willing to be engaged in the interaction. Customers’ motivation is varying with the products category’s relevance, their brand attachment, their media preferences, etc. In this seminar, the students learn how to assess and evaluate the customers’ profiles from commonly available databases in distance selling, e-commerce and mobile commerce. For evaluating the data students apply scoring, discriminant analysis (linear, non-linear & fuzzy), discrete choice models (logit & probit), multi-layer perceptrons, association analysis (a-priori algorithm) and rough sets using r packages. Additionally we discuss finite mixture modeling and hierarchical Bayes modeling with brugs. Privacy considerations and data protection as well as an introduction to the concepts of data mining, big data, and the translation analytical results into marketing communication measures complement the technical content of the seminar.

110125 Introduction to Behavioral

Economics Lecture (6 ECTS) x

Schwerpunkt 5 Pflichtmodul

Behavioral economics integrates insights from psychology into economics. Going beyond the bounds of rationality and selfinterest of economic agents, behavioral economics is concerned with the effects of psychological, social, and cognitive factors on the decisions of individuals and groups as well as their consequences for social welfare and the distribution of resources. In the first part of the course, we look at the most important cognitive biases as well as their causes and consequences. Students learn, for instance, how people behave under uncertainty, make predictions for the future, remember and evaluate the past, and what makes them happy. The second part of the course is on strategic decision making. Here the question is how people behave when their decisions not only affect their own welfare but also other people’s welfare. Students learn when people are generous, when they are trustful and trustworthy, when they cooperate for the sake of the group even if this is costly. We will play games in the classroom and compare the results with the results of lab experiments conducted with real money. We look at many real world examples like international climate change negotiations. The aim of the course is to give an overview of the most important findings in behavioral economics.

115905 The economics of charitable giving Blockseminar (6

ECTS) x

Schwerpunkt 5 Wahlpflichtmodul

The market for charitable giving is expanding. Economists have devoted significant effort to understand what drives charitable giving, including the institutional drivers, the social drivers and internal motivations. Beside the individual view, economists provide knowledge on the charitable sector as a market where fundraisers compete with different campaigns for donors. In addition, the government is also part of the charitable giving market by tax subsidies and the decision which public goods are provided publicly or left for charitable actions. This seminar provides an introduction to the economics of charitable giving by analysing key questions in charitable giving using different approaches, both theoretically and empirically. In particular, the three main players – donors, charities, and the government – and their interaction are at the focus. Students have the opportunity to gain a broad understanding on selected recent trends in the economics of charitable giving. They are expected to critically review economic literature on a selected topic and prepare and present a research paper that summarizes the current state of knowledge. The seminar enables students to apply their expertise and methods to analyse, discuss and evaluate research topics in the field of charitable giving.

224615 Behavioral Economics

Milestones Lecture (6 ECTS) X 2A+2B

Behavioral economics is a flourishing and influential field of research; it is impossible to cover it comprehensively in one single course. Hence I focus on milestones, which might be either researchers (like Daniel Kahneman, Herbert Simon, Gary Becker or Thomas Schelling), tools for research (like the ultimatum game and cross cultural experiments) or modelling approaches (like multiple selves).

t.b.a. Education Economics Seminar (6 ECTS) X (2.) 3A+3B+6

This course combines economic theory and empirical literature to examine a range of key issues in education. It starts from human capital theory as the basic economic perspective on education, and studies the (changing) returns to education, differentiating between skills learned, signaling and abilities. The lecture furthermore looks at the economics of early child hood education and higher education. It also surveys the potentilal impact of institutional features, such as class size, teacher quality, and accountability, on educational outcomes and inequality.

216795 Contemporary Issues in Behavioral Economics

261240 Crosscultural Issues in Business Psychology

Seminar (3/6 ECTS) X 4A+4B

This course is supposed to be fun! You should learn about cross-cultural differences and similarities, about its antecedents and its consequences. But at the same time you should teach and tell your experiences and examples from your travels or your home country. Thus this course is about communication and exchange. Consequently it’s absolutely required to be open-minded, to be willing to share and to be courageous to try out and experience. As a next step common grounds for global business will be presented and implications for negation processes deduced. This course will strive above many relevant topics to give you a feeling about “what matters” in cross-cultural interactions in work life… and maybe inspire you also further.

216605 Economic and Monetary

Union Seminar (6 ECTS) X 3A+3B+6

Since the beginning of the worldwide financial crises, Economic and Monetary Unions (EMU) like the Eurozone have gained particular interest for politicians and economists. The course „Economic and Monetary Union” is concerned with the arrangement and constitution of Monetary Unions and aims at shedding light on three core components. The first part of the lecture deals with some preliminary characteristics of Economic and Monetary Unions and points out the costs and benefits of Monetary Unions, its core characteristics and debates the question whether the Eurozone can be seen as an optimal currency union. The second part is concerned with the most important aspects of EMUs, the monetary as well as fiscal policy. Students will get an insight into optimal monetary and fiscal policy in a currency union, the exceptional monetary policy measures at the zero lower bound and the core characteristics of central bank communication, transparency and reputation. The course concludes with several aspects concerning crises and sheds light on the European sovereign debt crisis, the Quantitative Easing policies of the FED and ECB as well as sudden stops in EMUs, current account imbalances and Target2-issues.

216670 Economics of

Entrepreneurship Lecture (6 ECTS) X (2.) 2A+2B

216835 Economics of Science

and Technology

Seminar (6 ECTS) X (2.) 3A+3B+6

The course will provide an introduction into this research.

t.b.a. Selected Topics in

Energy Economics and Policy

Seminar (6 ECTS) X starting SoSe22

3A+3B+6 The course examines the economics of markets for a number of energy sources such as coal, oil, natural gas, electricity and renewables. It discusses aspects of energy demand and efficiency, energy taxes, regulation and public policies for greenhouse gas emission control.

216885 Field Experiments in

Economics Lecture (6 ECTS) X 1B+2B

Field experiments in economics allow to estimate the impact of social programs or policies in the naturally occurring environment using random assignment to the treated and the control group. For instance, using this method one can understand if helping people to escape poor districts does help them to start a new life or if entrepreneurial education increases start-up rates. The goal of this course is to explain why and when field experiments (randomized control trials) are useful, and how to provide field experiments. During the lectures you will learn why one should randomize to evaluate the impact of economic (social) programs, when to use field experiments (randomized control trials), how to randomize in the best way, how to choose right indicators and instruments to measure the outcomes of a program, how to make power analysis to determine the sample size needed for the study, how to limit the threats that can undermine the reliability of the study, how to provide statistical analysis of the data from randomized control trial, and how to draw policy conclusions from the field experiment.During the seminars we will discuss the results of the field experiments that study discrimination, corruption, entrepreneurship, gender and power, incentives and economic behaviour, fairness, voting behaviour, education.

216540 Industrial Dynamics Seminar (6 ECTS) X (2.) 2A+2B+5

In recent years, a rich theoretical and empirical literature on industrial dynamics and industry life cycles has been developed to complement the game-theoretic models of contemporary research on industrial organization. This literature has yielded important new insights into the conditions and dynamics of entry, exit, market structure and innovation activities in competitive industries. Mary approaches to industrial dynamics have highlighted the relevance of firm heterogeneity. At the same time, the research on industrial dynamics is closely related to the current work on entrepreneurship and also to strategic management research.

216875 Intermediate Public

Economics Lecture (6 ECTS) X 3A+3B

The course covers essential concepts in Public Economics (public goods, taxation, federalism, political economy). A special focus rests on the application of graphical and analytical tools. The application of these tools is trained in exercise session. In addition, we will work through empirical studies on selected concepts.

216550 Labor Economics Seminar (6 ECTS) X (2.) 3A+3B+6

Understanding the role of labor market institutions is a difficult but central task. Good institutions can alleviate the adverse effects of the many imperfections that characterize labor markets. But, unfortunately, bad institutions can, and often do, make things worse. The course will examine the many institutions that affect the behavior of workers and employers in imperfect labor markets, and thus touch upon a number of important issues in labor economics: minimum wages, employment protection legislation, unemployment benefits, active labor market policies, collective bargaining, early retirement programs, education and migration policies, payroll taxes, and employment-conditional incentives. In order to accurately characterize the effects of these institutions, the course relies on simple yet state-of-the-art theory and and provides empirical reviews of evidence.

201195 (Law)

201185 (Public)

Law and Economics/Public Choice

Lecture (6 ECTS) X 3A+3B

This course will cover the history and basic assumptions of the economics of law (REM, methodological individualism, evolutionary economics of law) and new political economy (economic analysis of politics) – basic concepts of the economics of law and their application to different fields of law. It will also take a look at the economic theory of elections and votes, including the relevant concepts of power, the theory of stakeholder groups (organizability of interests, influence of associations, and economic development), the positive economic theory of regulation, theory of bureaucracy, and the economics of constitution.

t.b.a. Marxian Economics Seminar (6 ECTS) X 3A+3B+6 This course is devoted to the economic writings of Karl Marx. 221025 Microeconometrics Lecture + exercise

(6 ECTS) X 1A+1B

This combined seminar and lecture will examine the economic determinants and consequences of population change and demographic behavior including household formation, marriage, child bearing and rearing, mortality and key forms of human capital investment including schooling and migration. We will apply analytical tools of economics to investigate various economic and social consequences of population change. The consequences studied include the economic impact of immigrants on native workers and taxpayers; population aging and fiscal sustainability, and the likely effect of government policies in support of families.

216730 Quantitative Methods of Experimental Economics

Seminar (6 ECTS) X 1B+2B+5

The unit consists of three parts. Part I is an introductory lecture on experimental methods and designs. In addition individual topics are assigned. Part II consists of a block course in which students run the individually assigned experiments. In addition, thre is a lecture on data analysis of experiments. On part III, students present the experimental results of their own experiments run in part II, combined with a lecture on how to write a paper on experimental results.

209580

Recent Developments in Forecasting Methods

with Empirical Applications

Seminar (6 ECTS) X X 1A+1B

Recent developments in forecasting methods state that a better forecast can be achieved rather through the combination of different models than by the use of one individual model. Many theoretical and empirical studies have indeed shown that certain application of different combinations so-called “model-averaging” of individual models can dominate individual forecasts in many different areas of economics and finance. The goal of this course is to introduce students to the theory of optimal forecast combination and to allow students to become familiar with it. After that, a statistics-software will be introduced through a practical application of model-averaging so that students can carry out an empirical project on the basis of certain empirical data.

216775 Social Policy Seminar (6 ECTS) X (2.) 3A+3B+6

The course looks at the idea of social welfare and its relationship to politics and the society. It also considers detailed issues on policy and administration of social services, the economic theory of state intervention and public vs. private insurance. Next, the lecture looks at different risks that can generate a need to offer some kind of public insurance. In particular, we will discuss how to (best) deal with the risks of longevity, health, non-employment, and children. This leads us to the fields of statutory pension insurance, health insurance, unemployment insurance, social welfare, and family related policies.
