Union Pacific

The original design dates back to the early Fifties, when it was offered in single- and double compartment versions. The name lends itself to the “action” created by an air-permeable fabric lining in the bottom of the compartment. Unloading the car involves pumping air under the lining fluidizing the com-modity which in turn is drawn out of the compartment by pneumatic or other means. This type of car was primarily used for sugar, flour, and starch (and sometime certain types of plastics).

The subject of these models is one of the double compartment cars, the 4180 cubic-foot design. It was introduced in 1962 and through a number of design changes continued in production until 1980 when the taller 4566 cubic-foot design supplanted the 4180. During that time a little over 5,000 were built.

Propane or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is both a naturally occurring product and a by-product of the refining process. During the 1940s, the petroleum industry began marketing LPG as a cleaner and more efficient fuel than the existing coal and oil. Transporting LPG requires specially designed high-pres-sure tank cars. During the early 40s the only ACF tank car that qualified was the 10,500 gallon high-pressure tank car. After the war, ACF set out to design a whole new car for the emerging industry. As a result the 11,000 gallon tank car was introduced by ACF in 1947. Many thousands were built up through the mid-1950s.

The Atlas model faithfully reproduces this late steam/early diesel era tank car in two versions (with and without platform rails). The cars with top platform rails were used where there was no elevated loading/unloading facility. The cars without the top platform rails were often specified for customers that had access to elevated loading and unloading facilities.

Side Dump cars are a very versatile class of railroad car, designed to deposit their load to either side of the tracks, rather than between the rails like a ballast hopper. This feature is utilized by the railroads in maintenance-of-way roles for rapidly building up fills and cuts with stone, rip-rap or soil as well as for depositing ballast. Side dump cars are also used in revenue service hauling ore, limestone, gravel, and coal, in industrial settings hauling waste or recycling materials, and in mining operations. Their low sides enable easy loading of material, and their rapid discharge rates – some less than 10 seconds – and ability to take a lot of abuse have earned them the nickname of a “dump truck on rails”. The Atlas DIFCO (Differential Steel Car Company) side dump car is modeled after the air-activated, all-welded construction, 50 cubic yard car which has been a familiar fixture on the rails both in the US and abroad from the late 1960s through today, and features prototypically accurate scale dimensions, roller bearing trucks, and knuckle couplers

This 50’ General American Corporation RBL (AAR class for an insulated bunkerless refrigerator car with loading devices), designed in the early 1960s, was revolutionary for its all welded body construction and wide variety of load restraining devices available to customers. These cars were designed for transporting goods that needed to be shielded from extreme temperature variations. While initially used to transport canned goods and newsprint, the cars became very popular for shipping beverages and perishables. While not providing actual refrigeration a refrigerated load could expect to hold its tempera-ture within a few degrees for several days in transit.

This is FMC’s entry into the Plate B IPD (Incentive Per Diem) box car era. The design was intended to be the “most universal”, interchangeable on most common railroad clearances. The cars were available with and without end-of-car cushioning, and were offered in several door configurations.

Over 4,300 cars were produced from 1975-1979 by FMC’s Portland, Oregon plant. The cars were delivered in numerous colorful shortline paint schemes, as well as the nationwide car pool fleet of Railbox. Many secondhand cars were later seen in Class 1 railroads and large leasing company fleets under additional shortline reporting marks.

Built by American Car & Foundry in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the 60’ Auto Parts Box Cars serviced assembly plants and component suppliers across the nation. The cars were equipped with either single or double doors, offering easy access to the freight inside, serving the auto industry well with their versatility. Many of these cars can still be found in service today throughout North America.

Propane or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is both a naturally occurring product and a by-product of the refining process. During the 1940s, the petroleum industry began marketing LPG as a cleaner and more efficient fuel than the existing coal and oil. Transporting LPG requires specially designed high-pres-sure tank cars. During the early 40s the only ACF tank car that qualified was the 10,500 gallon high-pressure tank car. After the war, ACF set out to design a whole new car for the emerging industry. As a result the 11,000 gallon tank car was introduced by ACF in 1947. Many thousands were built up through the mid-1950s.

The Atlas model faithfully reproduces this late steam/early diesel era tank car in two versions (with and without platform rails). The cars with top platform rails were used where there was no elevated loading/unloading facility. The cars without the top platform rails were often specified for customers that had access to elevated loading and unloading facilities.

During World War I, the US railroads experienced a critical equipment shortage due to increased traffic needs. This 55 Ton Hopper Car was one of the body types designed by the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) to relieve this shortage. Built in 1918, 25,000 of these cars were primarily assigned to the great coal-hauling roads of the east and mid-west. The car design was very successful and later became one of the standard cars of the American Railway Association.
