2 Winter 2017

When ‘grass sickness season’ rears its ugly head we are invariably traumatised by the tragic stories of sudden loss which emerge. Many owners are left feeling haunted and wracked with guilt. ‘What if..’ and ‘if only…’ are common themes, despite the fact that it is very difficult to predict when and where cases might occur and although the advice we give can help reduce the risk of a case there is nothing yet that can guarantee you will not have a case. Data suggests that approximately 95% of grass sickness cases are fatal, and for acute and sub acute cases there is sadly nothing that can be done.

Against this backdrop we are always delighted to hear your survivor stories and have featured some of the most recent ones here to help show that, despite the odds against them, it is possible for certain horses with the chronic form of grass sickness to survive. Making the decision whether to nurse a horse or not can be one of the most heartbreaking moments in a horse owners life, and the welfare of the individual horse is paramount. It is a complex decision with many factors to consider, which must be taken together with the advice of your vet. If you are faced with this difficult situation you are welcome to call the EGSF office or speak to one of the experienced team at the Royal (Dick) Vet.

Silver Djinn, our treasureSuffolk based Jan Goldsworthy wrote in with the story of her gorgeous grey Arab stallion in the hope that it would give heart to others struggling with chronic grass sickness cases.

In 2010 we had grass sickness on our property. All four horses came down with it within 48 hours of each other. Words cannot describe the pain and trauma we all went through. It was in September, and my chestnut Arab stallion was put down straight away having had an acute grass sickness diagnosis. It was heartbreaking. Tragically our gypsy cob was put down two weeks later.

The other two had chronic grass sickness so we had the next six months of nursing them back. We fed them a diet of dandelion, nettle, rosehip, marigold, tinctures and peppermint to start. I then added in small amounts of feed each day. They gradually built up enough appetite to eat every four hours. They barely drank water for several months but took in fluid through their feed.

Gradually we moved them onto new grass away from the fields and they improved. Sadly the other horse was put down in the spring due to increased management problems as he just couldn’t calm when out with other horses. The success came eventually though as we have been able to witness our then 3 year old arab colt grow into a beautiful stallion. I now ride him and he has been shown in a ridden class at the Royal Norfolk Show. He is very healthy and happy six years on, an absolute treasure. At now 10 years old Silver Djinn (Cassidy) is a super special lad and almost human companion!

EGS Survivor enjoys success at medium dressageCongratulations to Carol Andrews of Wimbledon Stables, whose dedicated nursing helped bring Minnie through her battle with EGS.

These before and after pictures show the miraculous recovery that Minnie made. She was in intensive care for 2 weeks and received round the clock care to keep her alive. Owner and breeder Carol Andrews spent weeks at her side, living in the hotel next door to the equine hospital and would hand feed her tiny bits of wet food and take her for short walks. It was a year before Minnie could drink water out of a bucket and three years before her breathing returned to normal. It was Carol’s love and dedication and Minnie’s zest for life that kept her alive. ‘She wanted to live and fought to do so’ says Carol.

Minnie has continued to grow stronger every year and has competed at prestigious events such Royal Windsor Horse Show and Hickstead in dressage, showjumping and showing and has been a successful team member for the Southern Region of British Dressage.

Marota, our polo playing EGS survivor!Jo Stoveld writes: ‘Marota was diagnosed back in December 2016, she spent 2 weeks at the Dick Vet and then I nursed her at home.

I didn’t bring her back into any sort of work till the start of May 2017 and we took things very slowly as I certainly didn’t want to push her in any way. She surprised me and she made it back on to the polo field in July! She played just three times as I didn’t want overdo things, knowing what she had been through.

Now we are back up in Scotland & she is enjoying just lightly hacking out a few times a week to keep her ticking over until the weather turns bad, then she will be on holiday till our Polo season starts again.

Marota is thriving & blooming I have sheer admiration for this horse, she put her trust in us & never gave up the fight.’

A CELEBRATION OF EGS SURVIVORS

She has qualified for the Regional Dressage Championships on five occasions, finishing in the top ten every time. She is now enjoying success at Medium level.

THE ANIMAL HEALTH TRUST’S EQUINE GRASS SICKNESS VACCINE TRIAL UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2017 Please note: Dr Jo Ireland will be talking about the vaccine trial at the EGSF Conference next April. See front page for details. All enrolled horses and ponies have now received their final booster injections, meaning that the treatment phase of the vaccine trial is complete. Data collection including follow up questionnaires, owner and veterinary paperwork is ending on the 31st October 2017 after this we can begin to organise our data analysis phase.

PRELIMINARY IMMUNOLOGICAL FINDINGSThe graph shows preliminary blood test results of serum samples before and after the primary injection course, with a clear difference between treatment groups. Treatment group 1 (Blue) has an increased immune response to the injection compared to the lower response seen in treatment group 2 (Red). Treatment group allocation is still masked, so we cannot confirm which group is the vaccine and which is the placebo; however once blinding is lifted, it is likely that these data will confirm immune response to vaccination.

Welcome to new AHT vaccine trial research assistant Abigail McGlennon, who graduated from Nottingham Trent University this summer with a 1st class degree in Equine Sports Science. During her studies Abbi developed an interest in equine research including health and welfare and surveillance, plus previous experience working on published research projects. Abbi has extensive experience with horses, having had her own for many years and working as a technician on the AHT’s Clinical Equine Referral Yard, so she has plenty of passion for horses and understands the important role they play in our lives.

JEAN OUDNEY WINS THE HEIDI AWARD 2017We are delighted to announce that Jean Oudney, organiser of the Scottish Grass sickness Show has been awarded the Heidi Award 2017 for EGSF Outstanding Supporter of the Year!

The Heidi Award was donated in 2015 by the Seath family in memory in memory of their lovely mare Heidi, and previous winners have been 2015 Helene Mauchlen of BHS Scotland and 2016 Mandy Mitchell, organiser of the Avon Valley Tidy Memorial Show in County Durham.

The Scottish Grass Sickness Show is dedicated to the memory of Sykes, Jean’s beloved Clydesdale who was lost to acute grass sickness in 2009 at just four years old. The first show took place in 2010 and has been an ever popular annual fixture since, raising almost £19,000 over the years.

Jean is assisted by a very loyal and hard working team of friends and family, in particular her cousin Carol. Back in 2015 we were very proud to invite both Jean and Carol to meet our patron HRH Princess Anne in recognition of their achievements. This year Jean’s team had their work cut out further when Jean broke her leg shortly before the show!

Sykes

Congratulations to Jean (left) on winning the Award, with many thanks for her long years of service from all at the Equine Grass Sickness Fund.

Yvonne Maclean and the gang at Ross-shire EGS Fun Show were shocked to hear that Fiona Ross sadly passed away recently. Fiona judged at the Ross-shire EGS Show last year and was hugely popular with the kids and she also did a huge amount of advertising for the show. Fiona was well known in the horse world and supported the EGSF hugely, she will be greatly missed by all.

6 Winter 2017

Fundraising RoundupWell, what can I say about this year other than WOW! The support for the Ross-shire EGS Fundraising has just grown and grown. We will probably need to change the name as we are getting support now from as far north as Shetland, far east as Peterhead, and as far west as Fort William! We started our efforts this year with the pub quiz and then the dog show, we have had some online raffle cards, auctions throughout the year and then the show last month which was again a superb success. Lizzie Meadows came up from Norwich to help judge and had a great time, she was super impressed at the quality of horses and the fun that everyone had on the day. We were also a qualifier for the Caledonian showing championships in Howe, Fife on the 30th Sept – 1st Oct where 37 horses qualified for the Cally champs. A fabulous effort and I am sure they will all go on and have a fab time at such a great show to end the season.

We are now preparing for our dinner dance presentation evening where we will be giving out all the trophies in memory of the horses lost to EGS & Laminitis and we have a good few on our list now with over 60 horses and ponies being remembered every year. Young Xanthe-Brooke Macfarlane said her dreams came true at the EGS show when she was presented with the Supreme Champion of the day rosette and sash with Nicola Martus having returned to showing her mare Ginny after many years of retirement winning the reserve champion after winning the veteran ridden on the day. Nicola judged for us last year so it was lovely to see her on board and enjoying the day as a competitor. It will be lovely to see both of them picking up their trophies on the night of the dinner dance along with all the other trophies being presented.

We have our youngstock show this weekend at Seaforth where we will be remembering Tia & Ruby on our new trophy after hearing how poor Alex North tragically lost not one but 2 (mum and daughter) to this vile disease in a matter of weeks of each other. Their stories will go on to impact others and help raise awareness in many years to come whilst we continue with our fundraising efforts.

It was fantastic on the day to see everyone having fun and enjoying the day, especially those who are instrumental in supporting our fundraising efforts, Hunter Macdonald who raised over £1500 with his dog show competing with

his Gran & Grandad’s orphan foal (now 2) who won the in hand championship.

Lindsay Macrae who raised over £1000 for us by doing the Glen Affric challenge this years winning not only the turnout in hand championship but also the ridden turnout championship! Lindsay and Anna as The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Sarah Milne who has raised over £1000 for us by doing her photo competitions and online auctions who came along with her new mare to scoop the in hand veteran class and go on to enjoy the day with her in the ridden and show jumping as a new team.

Kimmy Lai who has raised a few hundred £s for us in competing the Beast race last week came down with her youngster to show her gorgeousness off doing very well in the youngstock class and qualifying for the Cally champs. Great seeing so much of our supporters coming along and having fun and enjoying their day with us and doing so well against some stiff competition.

Ross-shire EGS Fun Show by Yvonne Maclean

John o’ Groats to Lands EndDonna Spence is also a very keen supporter, she didn’t make it to the show on her horse but she did raise over £600 for the fund by riding her motorbike from John O’Groats to Lands End with her biker mates. Donna said ‘ I would like to thank everyone that kindly donated. I can’t get over the generosity of people . We had a wonderful trip on the bikes, even got to sleep in a police station LOL!

We got to Perth on the way back, very tired, and could not find anywhere to stay. The police very kindly let us sleep on the floor in the reception, they could not let us in the cells but did giveus a cup of tea in the morning, could not ask for better ! 1748 miles and could still walk, but a little like John Wayne! Thank you all again for your kindness.’

We raised £303.60 for Equine Grass Sickness Fund! - by Anne Owen-WalkerA huge thank you to everyone who took part in the second Highland Pony Society and Highland Pony Enthusiasts Club’s Pleasure Ride at Escrick Park, York and everyone who sent donations. We had people who had a gentle hack round. others who flew over the fences but all had a great time, followed by tea, cakes and lots of highland pony chat. Thanks to Alison Payne who as well as representing the HPS Council also represented the HPEC bringing the rosettes kindly donated by the HPEC Pennine Group.

Ross-shire Companion Dog Show by Hunter MacDonaldI was asked to judge at 2016 show where Yvonne organised a wee dog show and it was hugely popular but it was difficult to fit in with all the horse activities that were happening at the same time. So this year I offered to run the dog show separately for Yvonne so she didn’t have to worry about it at the horse show, and we could make it a bigger event for everyone to get involved in. I never in a million years expected it to be as popular as it was but we had 90+ dogs attend and made over £1500 on the day which was absolutely superb and we definitely learned loads about how to make it better for next year. We had loads of pedigree classes for those who enjoy dog showing but also had the fun aspect too and the fancy dress was hugely popular with Karen Taylor winning with her braveheart spaniel Jarrah. I am already looking forward to arranging next year’s dog show which will hopefully be just as popular, more fun and raise lots of money for the fund at the same time.

Jarrah winning the fancy dress The super-westies! The overall winner Angela Macleod with the gorgeous Echo

Mary Jo (our local vet from Cononvet) with her two daughters having a laugh in the fancy dress.

Strathearn Eventing EGS Hunter TrialsAnother fabulous day of competition took place at Strathearn Eventing’s Grass Sickness Hunter Trials. Despite almost 200 competitors coming forward the day ran without a hitch, due as usual to Sarah’s flawless organisational skills! Thank you to Strathearn Eventing for another successful day and to all our wonderful jump judges and competitors for helping us raise this superb donation to EGS research. Scottish Grass Sickness Show – by Jean OudneyI am really proud to say the total we have raised this year for the Equine Grass Sickness Fund is £2800.00!!!!

Thank you so much to everyone that helped to once again make the show a success, including our sponsors and especially our loyal competitors who come back every year and make the show what it is. Well done everyone!!

I am especially amazed as for the last 5 or 6 years I had applied to my employers Aviva for £250 contribution but as I left the company this year to go self employed we are no longer eligible so I expected to make less than normal - so to make this amount is brilliant :)

This makes the total we have raised since 2010 for the Equine Grass Sickness Fund £18,760.00 :)

Many thanks to ‘Team Jean’ for pulling together to enable the show to go ahead - EGSF

Onesie RideThree cheers for the young riders at Harelaw Equestrian Centre in Longniddry, this year their third Onesie Ride raised an incredible £3379! The children and their parents have organised this ride every year since losing seven of their beloved ponies to grass sickness at their riding centre. An amazing effort by these young people, their parents, friends and families, and not least Harelaw Equestrian Centre’s Brenda Findlay and Carrie Bain. thank you to you all! Photo byAnne Thomson

Peebles Race Night raises £2585 for EGS researchArelene Haydock of Peebles was devastated to lose her two youngsters, Millie and Summer, to EGS. Back in May, when it should have been Summer’s 3rd birthday and Millie’s 2nd Arlene commemorated their memory by holding a race night in Peebles.

Arelene said ‘I couldn’t have asked for two nicer foals, both by the stunning Bolling Terry and out of my lovely

Sky mare. I miss them both so much and will always wonder how they would have turned out’.

The race night was a tremendous success, raising over £2500 for EGS research. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Balhagan Equestrian Grass Sickness ShowCongratulations and huge thanks to Fiona Mackinnon and everyone who took part at the Balhagan Equestrian Grass Sickness Show, raising a superb £2268!

Collection at Berwickshire Riding of the BoundsWell done to Hope Brown and friends, who organised a collection for EGSF at the Berwickshire Riding of the Bounds in memory of Scally, who was lost to grass sickness. An amazing £1465 was raised! Many thanks to everyone who took part!

Shetland Pony Stud Books 1967 – 2011We have been extremely fortunate to have been donated a valuable collection of Shetland Pony Stud Books from 1967 to 2011. This collection of 44 books has been cherished and is in very good condition. We would like to keep the books together by offering them as an entire collection. If a buyer for the collection is not found we will be selling them as decades or individually. If you are interested in this collection please contact Kate Thomson on 0131 445 6257 or [email protected]

EGSF receives tremendous help and support, without which we could not continue to make progress with research. Our work is entirely funded by public donation, mostly from those whose horses and ponies have suffered the disease, and we cannot thank you enough for your support.

VolunteersHuge thanks to everyone who organised a fundraising event or volunteered at an event for EGSF in 2017. We literally could

not do the work we do without your support. Particular thanks to those who have directly supported EGSF on our Tradestands at RHS and Blair, at Strathearn Hunter Trials and at Perth Races. If you would like to volunteer next year please get in touch

with Kate on 0131 445 6257 or email info@grasssickness .org.uk Dates: Strathearn Hunter Trials May, RHS June, Blair August, Perth Races September
