In Memory of Will Grant Will Grant was actively involved in the development and maintenance of the Kiwanis Disc Golf Course in Montgomery Hall Park. He coordinated quite a few tournaments and taught many workshops and classes for us over the years on various topics. Will was never short on ideas and his creativity and enthusiasm was shared with children in Camp Staunton creative writing classes as well as the Festival of Lights Celebration in Gypsy Hill Park. He transformed the “Field of Deer” into a public art memorial at Gypsy Hill Pool during the winter months. He will be sorely missed!

Camp Staunton: Spark CreativityJune 13-August 5

We take great care in the hiring process by only interviewing qualified and mature staff. The majority of our employees have been with Staunton Parks and Recreation for over 10 years. Our Park Setting makes us unique from some of our counterparts who use institutional settings. We have acres of green space, state-of-the-art playgrounds, woods to hike, outdoor sport courts and fishing lakes. We value creativity and have researched the many ways play in the outdoors enhances creativity in children. The Enrichment and activities we provide are exceptional.

Choices and Interests: Your child will chose from many activities like archery, creative writing, flag football, hiking, disc golf and cooking. We take Field Trips to various fun and exciting places, such as Boxerwood Gardens and Museums. Does your child need Exercise? Whether it is organized or unorganized play, there is no way around it. We play numerous recreational activities each day. Age Matters! It’s all about the age and appropriate activities for each age group which includes field trips. We separate our three camps according to age. The Staunton Parks and Recreation Summer Playground program has been in operation for over 30 years. Our reputation precedes us, just ask any previous summer playground parent or camper about our summer playground program. Register for the entire 8 week program, or pre-register for certain weeks. Program Fees: $620 pre-paid for 8 weeks, OR $90 weekly. Registration begins Monday, February 29 at 8am at the Irene Givens Administration Building in Montgomery Hall Park.

HEART: Healthy Environmental Afterschool Recreation TimeThe HEART afterschool program is a latchkey program that provides a home away from home to children of working parents. Concerns about safety and being home alone or under-supervised is a good reason to enroll your child in this program. We have little staff turnover from year to year giving us confidence that your child’s caregiver is both qualified and trustworthy. We have known each member of our child care staff for at least five years and they have extensive training and experience. They understand that parents want their children to be kept safe and feel acceptance and belonging. Most of our staff are parents and grandparents themselves, which can be very reassuring given staff maturity is the common denominator when establishing security and trust in a caregiver relationship. The HEART program has quite a tradition with its roots beginning 30 years ago with the first pilot program at McSwain Elementary School. We have since branched out to each elementary school in Staunton and have developed a credible and professional reputation. This year we are continuing with our enrichment to enhance what is already provided by the Staunton City Schools bookmobile activities, contracted creation artist Sandra Carter and our favorite animated storytellers Brenda and Diana from the Staunton Public Library. Registration is now being taken. Afternoon HEART is $126 per month. Morning HEART is $27 per month, both together are $140 per month. For any questions regarding the HEART program, please contact Claire Richardson at [email protected] or (540) 332-3945.

Gypsy Hill Walking ClubSponsored by Staunton Parks and Recreation and Subway on North Augusta StreetDid you know that one lap around Gypsy Hill Park equals 1.3 miles and takes around 25-30 minutes to complete? The American Heart Association recommends that adults get 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. That means five laps per week around Gypsy Hill Park will help you meet that recommendation. That’s easy! As a walking club member your miles are recorded weekly and can be viewed online at the Gypsy Hill Walking Club webpage on the Staunton City website. For 2016 our sponsor, Subway on North Augusta Street, has provided us with weekly $10 gift cards to help us stay energized and eat fresh! Club members who reach the weekly lap goal are entered into the drawing for that week’s $10 gift card. All ages welcome. #5617 Price: $10 annual club membership. Membership includes walking club shirt. Club currently meets Friday mornings at 9am in Gypsy Hill Park at the bandstand. No obligation to come Friday mornings, however it can be more fun to walk and burn calories with a friend. Recorded miles do not have to take place in Gypsy Hill Park. If you would like to establish an evening/weekend “group walk” please email Steven Taetzsch at [email protected].

In 2015 the city marked 20 years as a Tree City USA, a designation awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation annually. The award recognizes municipalities that have active tree care and tree planting programs and promote tree education. Staunton has easily qualified for this honor over the years as the City continues to plant, protect, and care for the trees in our parks and green spaces.

To celebrate 20 years as a Tree City USA, we will be labeling trees around the Gypsy Hill and Montgomery Hall playgrounds. The labels will include the tree’s common name, scientific name, and the plant family, offering park visitors an opportunity to learn more about the magnificent trees that grace our parks.

Naming TreesMany trees have multiple common names that can lead to confusion when identifying them. What one person calls a swamp maple another might call a red maple. Scientific names are in Latin and follow the Linnaean classification system of binomial nomenclature. Since Latin is a dead language, the classification system has not changed, helping to ensure standard names that are recognized throughout the world. That’s why nurserymen, arborists, horticulturists, and landscape architects utilize scientific names to ensure they get the right plant.

Staunton’s Arbor Day History Staunton’s appreciation for trees dates back more than a century. In fact, Arbor Day has been celebrated in the City for more than 125 years. A proclamation from the past reads as follows:

Staunton’s Amazing Trees:A Growing Success Rooted in HistoryStaunton Recognized as a Tree City USA for 20th Year

www.facebook.com/StauntonRecreationParks11

“On motion of Mr. Bargamin, the following resolutions were adopted: Resolved that the committee in charge of the contemplated Park (Gypsy Hill) be requested to ascertain the number and kind of trees necessary to procure for said Park and contract with some company for the number needed.

That the 25th of October, 1889 be set apart as arbor day, and the citizens of Staunton be invited to attend and engage in planting said trees, at points to be designated by the committee and the trees to be furnished at cost.”- Staunton City Council

Although the City lacks the documentation, some of the massive trees in Gypsy Hill Park were most likely planted during past Arbor Day celebrations. The Sycamores at the west end of the park, large Ash near the playground, rare Cucumber Magnolia near the exercise equipment, and massive Walnut behind the Bandstand are just a few of the amazing old trees we enjoy daily in Gypsy Hill. However, Staunton’s amazing trees are not limited to Gypsy Hill Park. A massive Tulip Poplar and two huge Ginkgo trees grace the front lawn of Montgomery Hall Park. An ancient White Oak located in Woodrow Park on Sear’s Hill witnessed the Union occupation of Staunton during the Civil War. Betsy Bell and Mary Gray Park remain a forest of mixed hardwoods, a welcoming green oasis in the heart of Staunton.

Staunton’s Tremendous Tree Hunt!April 29, 2016 marked yet another Arbor Day for Staunton. An Arbor Day celebration was held in Montgomery Hall Park and included children’s activities, free tree seedlings, and the kick off of the Staunton’s Treemendous Tree Hunt. Want to join in? The tree hunt is a scavenger hunt challenge for children. You can print a copy of the tree hunt from the Staunton Parks and Recreation website or pick up a copy from the administrative offices at Montgomery Hall Park. Use our new tree labels around the playgrounds to complete the scavenger hunts. Then, bring your completed scavenger hunt to our administrative office to receive a prize. Each child will receive a prize for their efforts. All participants will be eligible for three grand prizes to be awarded in September. The Treemendous Tree Hunt will begin April 29 and continue through the summer until August 31. Grand prize winners will be drawn and awarded in September. What is the grand prize? We cannot tell you right now, but it will be Treemendous!

Protecting Staunton’s Tree GemsWhile we appreciate and protect these green sentinels, it is important to plan for the years to come. We replace trees lost to old age, disease, and storm damage; we continue to add street trees and green our urban areas, and we work proactively to provide our young trees proper structural pruning to ensure they develop into strong specimens that will hold up in storms. In the years to come Staunton’s future will be bright, but we hope to keep cool in the shade.

Remembering our friend Paul RevelOn March 17, 2016, Staunton and Virginia’s trees lost an advocate. Paul Revel served Virginia as the Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Forestry. Over the years, Paul was a tireless and optimistic voice for trees and Virginia’s communities. Paul was instrumental in helping us procure multiple grants over the years. With Paul’s assistance, in the past 10 years we have planted about 175 trees. Paul Revel was a good man, a good friend to the city, and he will be missed throughout the state.
