Our board of directors has aligned the entire organization around one mission: “to enhance the productivity and profibility of dairy and beef producers!” We are led by a board of directors who are some of the leading farmers in America.

Rather than focus on maximizing short-term profits, they direct us to identify consumer demands and focus on solving long-term producer problems. This direction has led to the development of FeedPRO® and StrataGEN® and the partnerships that bring

As Select Sires enters its 50th year of service to dairy and beef producers, many people have asked me, “How has Select Sires grown into the industry leader?” The answer is actually quite simple. Select Sires’ elevation to the industry leader is a direct result of being a true farmer-owned cooperative.

CowManager® systems are now in place in herds of all sizes across the country. Here are the impressions of a few of the early adopters of this revolutionary ear tag-based system.

CowManager in Practice

Ben Yutzy, Windcrest Holsteins, Timberville, Va.

We purchased a CowManager system with 500 tags in July 2014 and have recently bought 500 more tags. The set-up of the system was very easy. We already had RFID tags in our cows’ ears and it was simple to place the tags over. It was much easier than putting on neck tags or leg bands. The health alerts are the most valuable part of the system for me. They help us identify cows that are sick or not ruminating correctly. I do more preventative care before a cow gets really sick because of these alerts. Cows will show up on my health alert list because of mastitis, milk fever, ketosis, acidosis and other issues. Occasionally it alerts me to illnesses I probably would not have found otherwise. I can also monitor how the cow responds to treatment and even adjust my treatments because of how I see her responding. The system provides us with heat detection alerts; not only finding cows in heat, but telling us how long they’ve been in heat so we can breed accordingly. I have recommended this system to other dairy producers and will continue to do so.

Dale Brady, Edaleen Dairy, Lynden, Wash.

One of the reasons we chose the (CowManager) system was that we could select the modules we thought we would use most and if we later decide that we want to add another module, we could do that without having to change or upgrade the ear tag. We researched several systems and quickly narrowed our choice down to collars or ear tags. One of the things that most impressed me (about CowManager) was that the creator, Gerard, is a dairy farmer. He has extensively tested CowManager in side-by-side comparison with other systems on his own cows. He not only knows the technology side of the system, but he is very in tuned to cow behavior and all aspects of cow health and comfort and helping increase production, and he is always interested in feedback to improve the system. When we first got the system we maintained our tail chalking routine until we had time to build confidence in the information we were seeing. It didn’t take long. The system almost never misses a cow in heat. We have since dropped tail chalking for heat detection. I am also anxious to compare our (pharmaceutical) bills from last year to this year. We are using less drugs. In addition, we have gained 3 percent on our Pregnancy Rate and days in milk has declined. The information on rumination activity has been a great help in managing our close-up cows to bring them in healthy and at the right weight. We monitor eating and temperature and can catch a case of E-coli or mastitis much earlier and head off problems. I have also found it very easy to check the different alert lists from my phone to help keep a close eye on the herd.

Sander Penterman, Dutch Dairy LLC, Thorp, Wis.

We had been looking for a system that would make our lives easier and improve heat detection, before becoming the first herd in the U.S. to install the CowManager system three years ago. The system has been the best investment we have made on the farm and has saved us a lot of money. It is the easiest system I have ever installed and the updates are very easy to do. We used to use Double Ovsynch on the herd, which was a lot of shots with minimal results. After installing CowManager we cut all shots cold turkey and the results have been phenomenal. It is amazing how many cows the system catches in heat and the cows are calmer because we are not in the barn giving shots all the time. It is a very easy program to use to find cows that are in heat or sick. The system finds D.A.s and mastitis before people can. It also notifies us when a cow is having calving difficulties and our veterinary costs are down because we can treat cows early. My cell phone is updated every two hours with information from CowManager and I can set different tones for the alerts. I would not change anything about the system.

Tom Alexander, Cherry Grove Farms, Inc., Fairfield, Va.

We purchased the system in December 2014 and the installation went off without any hitches. I find the system to be very accurate. All cows CowManager finds in heat are in heat and all cows we find in heat the system already knows they are in heat. It is also a great help in identifying health issues. For example, I had a cow that may have had a touch of pneumonia and the system alerted me. I never would have seen it otherwise and I was able to get ahead of the game with her. When we change feed from one bag to another, it finds cows that are not ruminating and we can intervene and help them get over it quicker. We never would have known about these cows without the system.

Join Us in Spreading Dairy’s Good Story Online by Stan Erwine, vice president farmer relations and activation, Dairy Management Inc.

If you were on social media in late January you may have seen #MilkTruth popping up. The dairy checkoff and Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP) launched a social media campaign to respond to misinformation about cow’s milk. Thanks to Select Sires, member co-ops, staff and farmers for supporting the #MilkTruth campaign. The campaign generated more than 225 million instances of positive dairy messages from nearly 1,000 farmers, processors, co-ops, registered dietitians and agribusiness representatives. For the first time on social media, the industry, including Select Sires, united on a large scale to reach millions with real milk facts. As a result, milk became a trending topic on Facebook and in Google Trends as we dispelled myths and made accurate milk comparisons to alternative beverage claims. Now the industry is ready to do even more, and we want you to join us. Your checkoff will continue this myth-busting approach. New, fun videos will connect urban millennials, who’ve become disconnected from how their food gets to them from dairy farmers. Together, they’ll experience each other’s worlds and address common dairy misconceptions about animal care, antibiotics, sustainability and nutrition. The series will be hosted by a

millennial who has a strong social media following—as well as partners like AOL, the Huffington Post and other digital and traditional media. This campaign will engage millions of consumers in the media channels they turn to. DMI and an expanded group of industry players, from farmers to brand partners, will use the system that supported the #MilkTruth campaign to continue to activate the industry around myth-busting and the new video series. You’ll be able to participate by using these materials on your own social media channels, farm tours, letters to the editor and community and school events. This will extend dairy’s voice like never before, so we encourage you to get involved. Your support will help build a steady drumbeat of proactive dairy information. Our goal is to build consumer confidence by balancing one-sided conversations and misinformation spread by anti-dairy factions. The program and tools are simple to use because the consumer-tested messages have already been developed. All you have to do is share them with your friends, family and followers. To get started, go to http://mydairy.dairy.org and sign up for myDairy. You’ll get access to consumer-facing social media content you can use to counter anti-dairy sentiments online.

genetic consultants from Select Sires’ member organizations, international distributors and guests as well as other Select Sires staff from 22 countries met at the 40th annual SMS Evaluators Conference, hosted by Select Sires GenerVations in Ontario, Canada, May 9-13.

While at the conference, genetic consultants participated in a day of continuing education. They discussed new genetic indexes, on-farm daughter observations, received updates on the Aggressive Reproductive Technologies™ (ART™) program, and were updated on the strengths of Select Sires' lineup, exciting sires waiting for their first daughter proofs and future Super Samplers™. In addition they received training on enhancements that have been made to the SMS program as well as innovative technologies and recent trends.

The annual conference allows genetic consultants to view hundreds of Select-sired daughters and see incorporated both classroom and on-farm training.

“Besides the educational aspects, the conference is a great networking event that allows the SRS specialists from across the federation to see what others with similar responsibilities are doing,” stated Dr. Ray Nebel, vice president of technical service programs. “We had the opportunity to collaborate, brainstorm, learn new skills and hear about the latest CowManager® developments. The team challenge activity is always a highlight, as well.”

Outside of the classroom SRS specialists participated in the annual RePRO Analysis™ challenge. Attendees were split into small teams and worked together to evaluate a dairy and present their findings to the entire conference. Similar to Dairy Challenge, this real-world experience allows SRS specialists to collaborate with their peers from around the country. Select Sires would like to thank Spring Grove Dairy, Brodhead, Wis., Larson Acres Dairy, Evansville, Wis., Rosendale Dairy, Pickett, Wis. and Murph-Ko Dairy, Fond du Lac, Wis. for taking part in the conference.

These are just two of the ongoing programs Select Sires has in place to continue to expand the skills of the industry’s most service-oriented and best trained team.

At Select Sires, we pride ourselves in being “Your Solutions Team” providing you with industry-leading service and support. Advanced training sessions were held recently for SMS genetic consultants and SRS specialists to advance their skills in serving your needs.

A record number of participants attended this year's SMS Conference.

Reaching Genetic Goals with Greg Silva

Silva, a 19-year All West employee, joined the cooperative in 1996 after working for another A.I. company and a few commercial dairy producers. “All West and Select Sires is the best company in the world and I knew this was the place I wanted to be,” explains Silva. “I enjoy genetics and good cows, no matter the breed, and I didn’t have

4-H and FFA. In junior college he was a member of the dairy judging team and was named the high individual in the Post Secondary Contest at World Dairy Expo. “I love watching customers' herds transform, especially in the genomic age,” says Silva. “I’m now able to see the results of herds that used genomic young sires early. I now see some outstanding TOPEKA, DIGNITARY, GOLDA, MOGUL, SPUR and OBSERVER daughters in those herds.” Although he mainly serves as a Select Mating Service (SMS) genetic consultant, Silva is still involved in sales, working with technicians and CowManager sales and support. He communicates with sales representatives and technicians daily to ensure his customers' semen and product needs are met. “Every day I wear a different hat and some days I wear multiple hats,” says Silva. “My favorite part of the job is working and visiting with dairy producers. All West, Select Sires and my customers are all just one big happy family to me.”

Balanced Jersey approach Silva works closely with 10 Jersey herds in Tulare and Kings Counties and

credits Select Sires’ balanced genetic program for both proven and genomic young sires with propelling the Jersey Revolution™. “Our genetics are second-to-none,” explains Silva. “Our young sire sampling program is the best in the world, our federation is made of true cow people that undergo extensive training, SMS genetic consultants are the best and brightest and our fertility is outstanding. The longevity of our people speaks volumes as well.” He is continually working on his communication and cow skills by attending SMS conferences to not only view Select Sires progeny, but share ideas and learn from genetic consultants around the world. Silva is always interested in expanding his knowledge about cow families from the sire team including Jersey experts, Jeff Ziegler, Herby Lutz and Tim Baumgartner. “For anyone interested in this type of position it is important to have general dairy knowledge,” Silva says. “This job isn’t just cattle judging, it’s complete dairy management.” Silva is just one of the dedicated people in the Select Sires federation ready to serve our customer-owners.

A2 Results Confirmed Select Sires will be introducing new information about the A2 status for sires in the August sire summaries. Select Sires has conducted additional DNA testing to certify which bulls are true A2 beta casein transmitters. The extra testing, supervised by the a2 Milk Company, provides more detailed results of which beta casein variants a sire transmits and also verifies those that are true A2 transmitters. Bulls with the A2A2 genotype that have passed this verification testing will be identified with a special label beginning in August.
