Dear Friends of Carmel Catholic,

I have enjoyed my 18 months back at Carmel Catholic as “interim” president. It is a special grace to return to a place you love a second time! During this short period, which went quickly (on most days!), we have accomplished much together, and I feel an excitement for the months and years ahead.

Since 2006, I have observed that CCHS has changed and grown in many areas: the ways we communicate with each other through e-mail and social media; the use of technology in learning; the increase of AP classes, electives and the expansion of our fine arts program; the strengthening of Christian service and liturgical celebrations; and the introduction of new sports in our athletic program. I could go on and on…

Carmel Catholic’s future will be shaped through the governance of our Corporate Board (BVMs and Carmelites) and our Board of Directors, and managed by the administration of the school. Building on the past, President Bonham and Principal Ostap will chart challenging initiatives for the future to continue and strengthen the mission of Catholic education for future generations of students. I leave (again!) filled with gratitude for each of you.

In the short time that I have been at Carmel Catholic High School, I have become so impressed with the love and the devotion of the alumni, faculty and staff. My family and I are very grateful and excited to be part of the wonderful school community and tradition of excellence in Catholic education that Carmel Catholic presents.

I have a strong devotion to Catholic education, firmly believing that all that we do is to glorify God. Carmel is Christ-centered, with the emphasis on developing young men and women to reach their fullest academic potential. It is apparent that the Carmel community is more than outstanding academics. It is a community which asks all students to be loving human beings, living a life of service and devotion to God. As President, my goal is to model, reinforce and continue to reinvigorate the mission of Carmel Catholic. I believe myself lucky to be part of such a great school and I look forward to an exciting future with everyone at Carmel Catholic.

Congratulations, Class of 2015Newest Corsair alumni graduated May 29Carmel Catholic High School welcomes 294 new additions to its vibrant community of alumni! Members of the Class of 2015 graduated in a ceremony held on the evening of Friday, May 29 in the school’s Salvi Arena.

Ninety-nine percent of the graduates are college bound and will be heading off to more than 100 colleges and universities across the nation. Nearly $32.5 million in college scholarships have been awarded to these students. Additionally, 100 percent of the class performed community service work—40 hours per student per year.

The Class of 2015 includes one National Merit Scholar, three National Merit Finalists, eight National Merit Commended Scholars, 84 Illinois State Scholars, seven Advanced Placement Scholars with honors and five Advanced Placement Scholars.

Selected by the Class of 2015 to deliver the commencement address for the evening, science teacher Ray Krawzak shared three pieces of advice with the seniors:

1. “Turn your family into your friends and turn your friends into your family.” Krawzak offered anecdotes of friendships he’s made within his family, including his mom (who was present) and friends he’s kept since high school.

2. “Never mistakenly think that you are alone.” Krawzak reminded students that their Carmel Catholic teachers and their families will still be here for them, even after they graduate and move away, and he reinforced the promise of God’s unconditional love and support.

3. “Remember that nothing productive ever happened on a futon.” Krawzak called students to go out into the world and DO SOMETHING, for they have the skills and talents to make the world a better place.

Salutatorian and National Merit Finalist Laura Matthews expressed her excitement for the futures of her fellow classmates. “I look back and am proud of how far we’ve come, but I find it much more exciting to look forward to see where we will go,” said Matthews. “Once we receive these diplomas and step out those doors, we will be alumni. We will go our separate ways to become college students, and then doctors, athletes, lawyers, engineers, politicians, researchers, writers and artists. But wherever you go, my dear seniors, I hope that you will keep the values you’ve learned and memories you’ve made here.”

Valedictorian and National Merit Scholar Nicole Hefner concluded the ceremony by urging the Class of 2015 to make a difference in the world. “In our own way, we should look into ourselves to find a way to make the world a better place,” said Hefner. “For our parents who made sacrifices so that we could attend Carmel, for our teachers whose lessons came not only from books but also from their hearts, for our friends who stuck with us in good and bad times, and especially for God, let’s show the world what we, the class of 2015, are made of.”

Of the 294 members of the class of 2015, nine earned the honor of four years of perfect attendance during their time at Carmel Catholic. What’s unique about one of these students, though, is that she has never missed a day of school. Ever.

Since kindergarten, Jacqueline Friello has been in attendance for school every single day, and she has the awards and trophies to prove it. However, it was never about receiving an award, says Jacqueline’s mom, AnnMarie Friello, but rather a personal dedication to herself and her education. Jacqueline admits that she also did not want to make up any missed work at a later time.

Jacqueline’s work ethic is truly outstanding, something that was instilled from her parents throughout her Catholic education. Jacqueline attended St. Mary of

the Annunciation in Mundelein for elementary school and Frassati Catholic Academy in Wauconda for her 8th grade year.

“What Jacqueline’s accomplishment means to me as her mom is that I have given her the foundation to achieve her gift to be driven, and it makes me so very proud,” said AnnMarie.

While at Carmel Catholic, Jacqueline was a part of the cross country team for four years and was also a member of the National Honors Society, National Spanish Honors Society, and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society. In the fall, Jacqueline will attend Marquette University, where she will double major in biology (pre-med) and Spanish, and minor in neuroscience.

Because of this student’s involvement, others have been motivated to become an active part of Carmel Catholic.

Carmel Catholic Leadership AwardRyan KowalskiThis award is given to a senior who has shown outstanding leadership through cooperation with faculty and support of fellow students. In all activities, this senior provides a positive example for others.

Around SchoolMayor’s Cup Math Challenge On March 8, approximately 90 Carmel Catholic High School students competed in the second annual Mundelein Mayor’s Cup Math Challenge. The contest, hosted by Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz, is open to all middle school and high school students living in or attending school within the village of Mundelein.

A total of 170 students from various schools competed for $8,000 in cash prizes. All students participated in the individual competition, with the top 10 finishers in each division receiving a monetary scholarship. In the individual competition, Carmel mathletes earned $3,475 in total scholarship money.

Congratulations to the following winners in each division: Varsity Individual: Tom Trzupek ’16 (2nd place, $750), Corey May ’16 (6th place, $250), William Heimberger ’16 (7th place, $200) and Jong Son ’16 (9th place, $100). Junior Varsity Individual: Jason Hajduk ’17 and Theresa Thiel ’18 (tie for 1st place, $625 each), Sarah Nelson ’18 (3rd place, $300), Samantha Dickmann ’17 (4th place, $250), Tommy Lacher ’17 (5th place, $200), Coral Wang ’18 (8th place, $100) and Lauren Caffarelli ’17 (9th place, $75).

Following the individual competition, students combined to form teams attempting to win the traveling team trophy awarded to the top school in each division. Carmel Catholic’s varsity and junior varsity teams earned first place trophies.

“This event is not only a lot of fun for our students, but it also adds value to their learning. I think it is a wonderful way for the community to show that it values academic achievement and intellectual ability,” said Carmel Catholic math teacher Christine Falkstrom, who helped coordinate Carmel’s involvement in the competition.

Blogging with Israeli StudentsCarmel Catholic’s Social Studies Department was able to arrange a unique opportunity for students in the 20th Century World History classes to correspond with a group of top-level high school students in Israel, who live in the town of Kiryat Gat, southwest of Jerusalem.

This activity afforded a special chance for the students to “meet” someone from a different part of the world with a different life experience. Students spent six to eight weeks posting questions and answers about current events and culture (music, movies, holidays, school, etc.). Teachers Mrs. Julie (Stith ’99) Donner and Mr. Jim Schuster also used this experience as an opportunity to discuss Internet safety, requiring students to refrain from the use of last names and setting up the students’ blog for private access only.

Environmental Club Success

The club collected 646 pounds of batteries during the 2014-2015 school year. They won the second place prize of $100 and a nice battery collection center from Battery Giant in Gurnee.

ESTEM Day for GirlsTwo Carmel Catholic teachers and several Carmel Catholic students showcased their work at STEM Day for Girls on February 28 at the College of Lake County, Grayslake Campus. STEM Day is a free event for girls in grades 7 through 12 who are interested in STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The program allows students to be introduced to a variety of topics through a series of hands-on activities and inspiring presentations.

Carmel Catholic students participated in the exploratorium component of the event. The girls who prepared and presented exhibits include Samantha Dickmann ’17, Katherine Donahoe ’15, Annie Hart ’17, Rose Poplawski ’17, Lindsay Truesdale ’17 and Coral Wang ’18. In addition, Carmel Catholic science teachers Joanne Bader and Marcella Linahan contributed to the event. Joanne Bader, who has volunteered for this event for the past five years, presented in the parent portion of the program on “How to Encourage Your Daughter Now!” Marcella Linahan co-presented “Infrared Astronomy: More than Your Eyes Can See.” This workshop taught students how NASA astronomers use the SOFIA telescope to see beyond the visible light spectrum into infrared. Students built their own infrared detector to “listen to light,” and learned how to use infrared light to power cell phones and more.

Archbishop Cupich VisitOn February 5, Carmel Catholic welcomed Archbishop Cupich and Bishop Rassas to campus. They walked the halls, talked with faculty and students as they visited classrooms and ate lunch in the cafeteria among a sea of students. This visit was one stop in the Archbishop’s Lake County leg of his archdiocese tour. During his visit, Archbishop Cupich was heard several times explaining his enjoyment of the tour and the school. As Archbishop Cupich and Bishop Rassas departed, each was given a parting gift from the Carmel community – a personalized Carmel sweatshirt.

Scholastic Bowl Wins RegionalsCarmel Catholic’s varsity Scholastic Bowl team had a good year, placing first at the Kaneland tournament in January, second in the conference and first at regionals. Congratulations to the varsity regional winners: Carter Bedward ’15, Sean Burke ’15, Justin Bush ’15, Chantal Lim ’15, Laura Matthews ’15, Griffin Michel ’16, Ricky Rivera ’17, Tom Trzupek ’16 and moderator Mr. Jim Schuster.

Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) State FinalsKelsey Biscocho ’16, Nicole Hefner ’15 and Sam Lubor ’15 competed in the WYSE state finals. The students all qualified for chemistry, and also competed in either biology or English. WYSE is an international program headquartered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Faculty and Staff RetirementsIn May, Carmel Catholic said goodbye to five wonderful faculty and staff members, who when combined spent 149 years at the school. Please join the Carmel Catholic community in wishing them joy and happiness in retirement.

More than 170 seventh and eighth grade students from 17 local junior high and middle schools participated in Carmel Catholic High School’s 26th annual mathematics competition on February 28.

The Carmel Catholic Math Department, led by Mr. John Titterton, organizes the competition each year. Contestants are asked questions regarding arithmetic computation, pre-algebra, basic geometry and elementary statistics and logic. Individual and team awards are distributed.

“I always enjoy having the local middle schools come to Carmel. It gives us a chance to meet their wonderful students and teachers, and it gives them a chance to see the beautiful Carmel campus,” said Mr. Titterton. “This

year, we made a point of giving more responsibility to our Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society students, and they did an exceptional job. Under the leadership of Maeve Daw ’15, the Mu Alpha Theta kids guided the middle school students around the building, helped set up and break down rooms, and helped administer and grade exams. It was a wonderful day, and I look forward to the event next year!” Next year’s mathematics competition is scheduled for February 27, 2016.

Carmel Catholic Mathematics Competition

In April, Carmel Catholic students Maddie Case ’18, Natalie Koenig ’18 and incoming freshmen Zach Hogan ’19 and Lucy Tarcha ’19, along with other members of their robotics team RoboPOP, qualified to compete in the FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis. The students went up against 106 teams from around the world to bring home the Gracious

Professionalism Award and a top 25 robot performance score.

“FIRST challenges you to create solutions to real world problems and build a robot which can complete an obstacle course. The opportunity to meet and compete against some of the best robotics teams in the world was amazing,” said Natalie Koenig.

RoboPOP has been competing together for the past five years and has earned more than 22 regional, state, national and international awards.

“Worlds was an amazing experience that I will always remember. It was a great way to end after five years with a team that has become my family,” said Maddie Case.

In February, Carmel Catholic kicked off a food recovery program. Thanks to Seth Brikholz from Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB), the NIFB comes to Carmel every other Thursday or Friday to pick-up any safely consumable food or beverage leftovers. These leftovers are then transported to St. Mary of Vernon, Indian Creek, where they use what they can in their soup kitchen. Soup kitchen leftovers are typically frozen and then made available through their Sharing Hands Food Pantry.

We wish to thank our cafeteria staff who carefully package, label and store our leftovers for NIFB pick-up, and Maeve Daw ’15, who brought the idea of a food recovery program to Carmel’s attention. Thanks also to Mr. Mike Fitzgibbons, Social Justice Club moderator and Campus Minister, for being the program point person.

ESpring Charity DriveOur annual spring charity drive offered many opportunities for students to live out Carmel Catholic’s mission to be “reflective thinkers, grateful stewards, and responsible leaders.”

Blood Drive – 218 units of blood were collected, which impacts the lives of 654 people. It was the second best collection in school history. During the 2014-2015 school year, the Carmel community donated enough blood to impact 1,263 lives – the school record for a single year’s donation efforts.

Glass Slipper Project – New or gently-used prom dresses and formal dresses were collected. The Glass Slipper Project has helped more than 20,000 young women in the Chicagoland area attend prom in style.

Kitz4Kidz Care Packages – Donations for care packages for kids with cancer at Lurie Children’s Hospital were collected. Kitz4Kidz is an Illinois 501c3 charity founded and run by three graduates of the Class of 2015.

Lenten Giving/Visit from Sr. AnnThe Student Council Executive Board and Social Justice Club collected $4,853.71 for Operation Rice Bowl – $3,711 of which was donated to Damien House in support of Sr. Ann’s efforts to treat patients with Hansen’s Disease.

During Lent, Carmel Catholic was blessed to have Sr. Ann Credidio, BVM, speak to religion classes about her 28 years of ministry in Ecuador. During her first year there, she visited the local hospital and met patients affected by Hansen’s Disease, also known as leprosy. When she saw the conditions the people were living in, she knew that God called her to be a presence and to advocate for those otherwise forgotten by society. With the help of many friends, Sr. Ann was pleased to open Damien House in 1994 to provide dignity and much needed care and love for people who are considered the untouchables of society. Through Sr. Ann’s vision and leadership, Damien House has restored the health, hope and confidence of several thousand patients and their family members.

WalkathonWe collected $113,000 this year, 114 percent of our goal for a student contribution to refurbishment of outdoor athletic fields. Each class contributed more than 100 percent of its goal! The senior class came in first with 125 percent, followed by the freshman class with 119 percent, the junior class with 108 percent and the sophomore class with 106 percent. Congratulations to our Walkathon runners who came in first – Mike Cusack ’16, Cameron Dean ’16, Aileen Hull ’16 and Patrick Pastika ’16.

Corsairs team up with Beacon PlaceThis summer, an exciting new Christian Service opportunity was offered to Carmel Catholic students. Organized by Campus Ministry, the program focused on serving those in need within the local community.

On Mondays throughout the summer, groups of a dozen students served children enrolled in Beacon Place’s Summer Lunch Bunch and Food Backpack programs in Waukegan.

Beacon Place was established in 2012 to provide programs that feed, educate, activate, train and empower children and families to develop as stronger individuals and community members through food and technology resources. Beacon Place strongly believes in the power of neighbors helping neighbors, something that Carmel Catholic fully embraces, according to Campus Minister Kambra French.

“Beacon Place was building this summer program and I could see

the need in the neighborhood and how solid this organization is, so I felt like Carmel could help their mission,” explained Mrs. French. “There is a mutual benefit in our students learning to understand and respond to the need that exists in our own local community.”

A handful of Carmel Catholic students have been completing their Christian Service hours at Beacon Place since its inception. According to Matt Stephens ’16, a member of Beacon Place’s Teen Leadership Board, Beacon Place is special because it provides excellent support for families in the community. “In the summer

time it’s a great place for children to come twice a week for lunch and to play games, sports, do arts and crafts, work on computers, read books and generally feel safe and welcomed. The kids also have fun and establish bonds with the teenage volunteers.”

As stated by Mrs. French, if all goes well, Carmel Catholic’s goal is to bring more than 25 students per week to Beacon Place next summer. If that goal is met, Beacon Place’s summer program for children may be able to offer lunches three days a week instead of two. More information about Beacon Place can be found at beacon-place.org.

For the past 42 years, March for Life has been held on the anniversary of the controversial 1973 Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, which overturned pro-life laws and legalized abortions. Nearly 25 seniors, faculty and parent volunteers joined hundreds of thousands in Washington, D.C., for the world’s largest pro-life event.

Carmel Catholic religion teacher Mrs. Paulette Stith, who has led the trip for the past 11 years, was joined this year by Sr. Kathleen Sinclair, BVM, Director of Student Activities and Mr. Phil Donner, religion teacher. For several students, March for Life was their first experience being involved in an event of this kind.

Grace Schofield, ’15 recounted her amazement at the number of people in attendance. The most powerful part of the trip for her was praying the rosary outside of a Planned Parenthood Clinic. “Going into this trip, I knew it was going to be an unforgettable experience,” Grace reflected, “but I didn’t know how unforgettable.”

EPrevention activities encourage students to abstain from substance useCarmel Catholic High School believes that physical and mental health is a vital component of the intellectual and spiritual development of our students. Along with our Director of Social Services Beth Carlson, M.S.W., Carmel Catholic is committed to assisting students with making healthy life choices by offering a variety of support services through our Social Services Department.

In particular, substance use and abuse in high school students has been a nationwide topic of concern for decades. While the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports a general decline in the use of illicit drugs in young adults over the last two decades, the issue is ever present. Carmel Catholic is doing its part to help ensure our students are aware of the potential consequences of substance use and abuse.

We offer a variety of programs and activities to educate our students and parents on these issues:• Students Against Destructive Decisions Club: SADD sponsors several campaigns throughout the

year that involve the posting of signs around school to remind students to make healthy choices. The campaigns are done for Homecoming, Christmas Break, Street Scenes Break, Spring Break and before prom and graduation.

• Red Ribbon Week: This is a national alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed each year at the end of October. Carmel Catholic hosts an assembly, holds lunch time activities and posts signs to educate students and increase awareness.

• Pre-Prom Assembly: Each year, Carmel Catholic invites a speaker to talk about the impact of drug and alcohol use.

• Sophomore Parent & Student Nights: These mandatory presentations include speakers who talk about the legal consequences of drug or alcohol use and the impact that using drugs or alcohol has on the adolescent brain.

• Substance Use Prevention Committee: This year, the Substance Use Prevention Committee, composed of faculty and administration members, mailed out a postcard to parents of juniors and seniors encouraging parents to give their students the same healthy messages we give them at school.

• Operation Snowball: This annual event helps reduce alcohol and drug use by increasing student self-esteem, friendships, leadership skills and refusal skills.

• Parents-in-Network: All parents of Carmel Catholic students are considered members of this network. Their names are published in the Parent Directory and they are encouraged to use this directory to communicate with each other regarding social events their students will be attending.

• Parent-to-Parent Nights: These events, held four times a year, are meant to support and educate parents of teens. This year, the topics included setting limits with your teen, medical marijuana, parent readiness for their student to go to college and “Stay out of my Room,” which showed parents how students may hide things in their bedrooms.

• Student Health Fair: Each December, Carmel Catholic has a variety of outside agencies come in with resources for students on stress management, healthy relationships and substance use.

Cadence AccoladesCarmel Catholic’s show choir Cadence successfully competed at two events this year. At the Chicagoland Showcase Competition at John Hersey High School, they earned first runner-up in the Festival Division, and Elizabeth Erickson ’16 received the Outstanding Performer award. Cadence received second place in the Festival Division at the Mundelein Invitational.

Tri-M Visits Lyric Opera

Tri-M Music Honor Society attended the Chicago Lyric Opera to see Amanda Majeski ’02 perform in “The Passenger.” Majeski not only spent time with students at the opera house, but also came to Carmel Catholic to speak with Mr. Parry’s choir classes about her career as an opera singer.

For Street Scenes Celebrates Superheroes in February, the Carmel Catholic Council for the Arts (CCCA) decided to celebrate some local heroes in their Street Scenes room “Hall of Education,” with Mr. Kent Parry as Mr. Incredible, Mrs. Denise Sebastiano as Wonder Woman, Mr. Mike Fitzgibbons as Superman, Mr. Dave Wiebers as Green Hornet and Ms. Kacey Valentine as Mrs. Incredible.

Performers Shine in Spring MusicalRecord crowds attended Carmel Catholic’s spring musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in April. The production included more than 120 students in cast, crew and orchestra pit. Hannah James ’15 portrayed a perfect Millie, and Ryan Kowalski ’15 was fabulous in his first starring role as Jimmy. Gianna Rizzo ’15 as Mrs. Meers lured young artists into her hotel with the help of her assistants Bun Foo, played by Rich Comber ’15, and Ching Ho, played by Matt Trush ’16 and Anthony Calcari ’16. Brody Long ’15 and Natalie Seidl ’16 played the parts of Trevor, Millie’s boss/fiancé and Dorothy’s best friend. Bravo to all students and adults who contributed their time and talent to make this a beautiful showcase of fine arts students!

The team won the regional championship for the 13th consecutive year. They placed 2nd at the Conant 10-team Invitational and at the Lake County meet. Samantha Lococo ’17 was a state qualifier in vault, bars and floor exercise. She placed 3rd in the floor exercise and 11th in the all-around at state. Lococo was also named Buffalo Wild Wings Athlete of the Month in January.

Kenny Barber ’16 (132 lbs.), Nathan Morris ’16 (160 lbs.) and

Michael Tortorice ’16 (113 lbs.) were IHSA Class 2A Regional Champions. Barber was also a sectional champion. Tortorice was a sectional champion who went on to place 3rd at state. Anthony Swindell ’15 (145 lbs.) placed 6th at state.

Emma Rappe ’15 was named Trib Local Athlete of the Month in December and to the Mundelein All-Tournament Team.

Boys’ Basketball Christopher Duff ’16 was named All-ESCC and Buffalo Wild Wings Athlete of the Month in December.

HockeyThe team finished their season with a record of 11-39.

BaseballThe team had a record of 9-15 as of 5/6/15. On the spring baseball trip to St. Louis, pitcher Joe Santoro ’16 made Carmel history by starting one game left-handed (against Normal U-High on March 21) and another right-handed (against Clayton on March 25). Street Scenes Celebrates Superheroes 2015 was a great success! More than 4,700 guests strolled the streets and enjoyed 62 bands, improv and variety acts. Our students once again saved the day with super talent in the student show and heroic ad book sales that brought the total fundraising this year to $376,404 – the largest amount of money raised since 2008. Of course none of this would be possible without the more than 1,000 wonderful volunteers who planned and produced Street Scenes. We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated in this time-honored tradition at Carmel Catholic.

In 2016, Street Scenes Toasts Mardi Gras on February 12-13 and promises to top $10 million total dollars raised since Street Scenes began. Help bring the bayou to Brice Street and join in the fun for next year! Welcome, Amanda Thomas, New CCHS Special Events and Volunteer CoordinatorThe Advancement Office is pleased to introduce Amanda Thomas, our new Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator. Amanda comes to Carmel Catholic from A Safe Place, where she served in a similar role, planning several successful fundraising events. Amanda is a native of the Quad Cities area, and a graduate of Augustana College and Western Illinois University. Amanda was gracious enough to speak with us about her own high school experiences and her time at Carmel Catholic so far.

Amanda, what is your favorite high school memory?Friday Night Lights and cheering at the football games are some of my favorite memories from Rock Island High School. I am really excited to cheer on the Corsairs this year!

What other activities did you participate in?Everything: soccer, cheerleading, cross country, Key Club, Spanish Club, National Honors Society. I still run a lot (mostly after my puppy) and love to read. I did some coaching in college, and hope to find ways to be more involved in student activities at Carmel Catholic.

What do you like most about Carmel so far?You hear it all the time, but I do love the sense of community at Carmel Catholic. Walking in the doors to smiling faces on the faculty and staff is so welcoming. The kids are all so kind—I don’t remember being that nice in high school! It’s just a wonderful place to come to work where people really want to know you.

Volunteers RequestedVolunteering is a way of life at Carmel Catholic! We depend on everyone to lend a helping hand to better the Carmel Catholic community. Parents and grandparents who are involved in the life of the school can build friendships of their own while sharing experiences with their students. Many alumni return to Carmel to share their experiences after high school with our students today.

There are many opportunities to become involved at Carmel Catholic. Why not join our Parents’ Association or a Street Scenes committee? Maybe you want to be a classroom volunteer, subbing for teachers, or share your work experience in our Cookies and a Career series. There is something for everyone!

Sweet Sixteen Basketball Reunion

Memories of three decades ago were alive at Carmel in early February as Coach Frank Belmont ’71, several assistant coaches and 20 members of the 1984-85 and 1985-86 Boys’ Basketball Sweet Sixteen teams came back to Carmel for a weekend reunion event.

Players and their families reunited outside the Salvi Arena, sharing stories while perusing yearbooks, videos of games and newspaper articles. The reunion marked the anniversary of both teams securing Carmel’s first- and second-ever IHSA sectional boys’ basketball championships nearly 30 years ago.

The two back-to-back Sweet Sixteen teams were honored and introduced at halftime of the Boys’ Varsity game on Friday, February 6 against St. Patrick. Following the game, the team was joined by family and friends at Crossroads in Mundelein. They also came back the next day for an open gym at Carmel (no injuries reported), and then headed off to Emil’s in Mundelein for some final reminiscing.

A big thank you goes to Coach Belmont for all of his efforts in getting most of “his guys” back for a great alumni event.

Thank You, AlumniWe want to thank all of the alumni who took time out of their busy lives to come back to Carmel Catholic to speak to students this school year.

One program that relies on the help of alumni is the new “Cookies And A Career” speaker series. The concept is a “lunch and learn” program where students are invited to bring their lunch to the College and Career Resource Center and meet with Carmel alumni who discuss their careers. Thank you to Jackie (Bond ’88) Senger and Christine Hartnett, Director of College Counseling, for their efforts in the first year of this program. And a special thanks to the four alumni who came back to Carmel Catholic to speak to hundreds of students as part of this program: Julie (Farrell ’89) Simak, Andrew Culp ’05, Kathy (Shellenberger ’88) Longo and Dan Cameron ’00.

The OUCH (Opportunity to Understand Careers in Healthcare) Club also continued their program of bringing speakers from various healthcare fields back to Carmel Catholic. Alumni returning to speak to students were David Esterquest ’12, Ashlen Meyer ’10, Tim Orlowski ’08, Michael Scheer ’13, Anthony Collins ’87 and Meghan (Rafferty ’97) McMillin.

Several more alumni met with classes and student groups: Adriana Castanos ’13 met with theater students, Amanda Majeski ’02 met with music students, Erik Liederbach ’09 spoke to anatomy students and Samer Attar ’94 and Ala Dean Attar ’89 met with students in the Diversity Club.

From Street Scenes to athletics, from committees to clubs, our alumni are a vital part of the Carmel Catholic community. We extend our sincerest gratitude to all of you who continue to contribute your time, talent, and support to our school.

Nada (Kojic) Wheelock was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Vancouver Public Schools. Wheelock holds a master’s degree in business administration from Dartmouth College and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago. She has worked in marketing and consulting for EMC Corporation, Contact Networks and Fidelity Investments in Massachusetts. Wheelock co-founded the Tuck Nonprofit Fund at the Tuck

School of Business, and she served as a consultant to the SPOON Foundation, a Portland organization that works to improve nutrition for orphaned, fostered and adopted children around the world.

1991Eric Feinendegen is a member of the Lake County and the Look Who’s Talking Toastmasters Clubs, and he has competed in six District-level contests. Feinendegen will proudly represent District 30 at Toastmasters’ International Speech Contest that will take place at the International Conference in Las Vegas in August 2015. The winner of the International Speech Contest will have survived seven rounds of competition and advanced beyond 33,000 competitors from around the world to be deemed “The World Champion of Public Speaking.”

football program, Mike Nobler joined the Miami Dolphins as their Video Director. Nobler has risen from an unpaid video intern at Western Illinois University to one of the top football video specialists in the country. Nobler, his wife Heather and daughter Madeline recently relocated to South Florida. They will welcome their second child in September. Kevin Devitt is the Director of Operations for the UAB men’s basketball team. With the Blazers, Devitt coordinates team travel, handles video operations and runs the program’s summer camp for high school players, in addition to taking care of other logistical management. 2005Elliot Flaws graduated with a bachelor’s degree in interior architecture and design with a minor in photography from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) in 2009. Flaws received his master’s degree in architecture from the University

of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 2014. He works at Downey Szafarz Architects in Lake Forest, Ill.

2008Arie Marchioni was on the February 4 episode of the popular television show “Chicago PD” as a clerk who survived a horrific fire. While at Carmel Catholic, Marchioni excelled in dramatic arts. She works in Chicago. 2010Stephanie Richartz was named “Illini of the Week” in March at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Richartz captured her second Big Ten indoor championship in the pole vault and fourth overall including the outdoor season. She set the school record with a jump of 4.45 meters. This mark earned her

third-place honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, as Richartz was named to the first team All-American for the second time in her career.

2012Nicole Murgas received Dean’s List honors at the University of Notre Dame. Murgas is majoring in psychology and Spanish and minoring in Catholic social tradition. She is part of the Notre Dame cheerleading squad and women’s boxing club.

2013Lauren Feely won the vault title for Bowling Green State University at the MAC Championships held at Kent State. Her score of 9.90 equaled her college career high score. Feely was also named to the MAC All Championship Team.
