    letter from

    the presidentDear Friends,

We are very happy to present our summer course oerings. Weve got something for everyone, from camps for kids to classes for adults, in many disciplines and at all skill levels. Summer is the perfect time to get creative, and the Arts Center is the perfect place to foster your creativity.

In particular, we have great teachers and wonderful facilities. Nothing is more important than the relationship between teacher and student, and Arts Center teachers are working artists who know how to expertly teach their medium, encourage and develop student growth, and create the conditions for maximum creativity. Many have been teaching at the Arts Center for years, and we are always adding new and impressive teachers to our team. You can read about them yourself on our web site at http://www.artscenteronline.org/about-us/our-faculty/

And our facilities are top notch and professional grade. You simply cannot find studios as good as ours in a non-college or university setting. We take our teaching and creative work seriously and know that excellent tools of the trade are critical to creative growth. When I show people our pottery studios, for example, they marvel at the sheer size and the depth of available resources. Its truly impressive.

So take some time this summer and immerse yourself in our creative oerings. We promise you will learn a lot and have fun doing so.

CREATIVE THINKING PROGRAMWHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING?Creative thinking is the process of having original ideas that have value.

    Sir Ken Robinson

Classes in creative thinking will introduce you to this process, which can be applied to almost any facet of human life, from parenting to business innovations. Creative thinking can be taught, and you will learn the techniques and skills needed to be more creative and innovative in your life and work.

WHY CREATIVE THINKING?Why is creativity even important? It is important because the world is changing at a far greater pace than it has ever before, and people need constantly to cope with novel kinds of tasks and situations. . . The problems we confront, whether in our families, communities, or nations, are novel and difficult, and we need to think creatively or divergently to solve these problems. Robert Sternberg, Cornell University

Simply put, creativity is now a core skill, one that is necessary for life in the 21st century. Learn how to become a creative problem solver and imaginative thinker - and put these skills to work in practical and helpful ways.

WHO ARE THE TEACHERS?Classes in creative thinking are taught by Arts Center staff who have backgrounds in education, the arts, and business. All teachers have received training in creative thinking from graduates of the International Center for Studies in Creativity (ICSC) at Buffalo State College, a program that has 40 years of practice and research behind it.

ARE THESE CLASSES FOR ME?You do not need to have any specialized training or background in the arts or creative thinking to benefit from our classes. However, those who do have a creative background will extend their skills and learn some new ways to be even more creative.

Creative thinking is not a talent, it is a skill that can be learned. It empowers people by adding strength to their natural abilities. EDWARD DE BONO

HOW DO I SIGN UP?To register for a creative thinking class, contact our registrar at (518)273-0552 X231 or [email protected] or visit our website. To Register for group classes, contact Chris Marblo, Arts Center President at (518)273-0552 X228 or [email protected].

FENCE SHOW 2015 | 50TH ANNIVERSARY The Fence Show is an annual opportunity for all Arts Center members to display their work in our galleries. In 2014, we accepted and displayed 335 pieces, including paintings, drawing, photography, fiber arts, stained glass and sculpture. There is also a separate category for young artists in grades K-12. Julie Lohnes, Curator of Art Collections and Exhibitions at Union College, will serve as this years juror. Lohnes will curate a smaller show from the Fence Show called the Fence Select, which will be on display for several weeks after the salon style show is dismantled.

Marilee Sousie precisely jumbles coloring books, animation stills, and movies together to create playful fictional worlds. The fusion of vivid hues and seductive lines combined with the topsy-turviness of the composition allows the artist to explore personal relationships and the emotional responses to these experiences. Sousie was the Best in Show recipient from the 2014 Fence Show.

PROGRAMMING THEME: LANDSCAPES We live surrounded by a diverse and glorious cacophony of sensory imaginings; a symphony so dense and seamless it blends into our existence and becomes mundane. The white noise of everyday living. So this beautiful Summer-to-be of 2015, we ask you to look out, listen in, touch gently, smell deeply become alive with the world surrounding you and discover where you live and work, the landscape surrounding you. Then take a class, express your imaginings, and create your own unique landscape.

NEW PARTNERSHIPSGAME DESIGN PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TECH VALLEY GAME SPACE

The Arts Center of the Capital Region and Tech Valley Game Space are pleased to announce a new partnership. This collaboration is a vital step toward fostering a stronger and more diverse game development community within the Capital Region.

This new partnership will allow TVGS to provide a variety of game development related activities at The Arts Center, including classes aimed at first time developers and interactive showcases of

work by local creators. TVGS and The Arts Center will also be working together to organize and host a series of events and workshops focused on promoting diversity within the local game development community, including free community game jams and showcases to support our community of tech artists and to expose the craft to a wider audience. The public are welcome to attend the showcase featuring these games during each Troy Night Out in the Digital Arts Studio at The Arts Center.

PROGRAMS WITH THE RENSSELAER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:

With paint, ink and photography, artists have portrayed views of Rensselaer Countys landscape for over two hundred years. A new exhibit at The Rensselaer County Historical Society titled Scenic Overlook: Perspectives on Rensselaer Countys Changing Landscape will look beyond the undoubted aesthetic quality of these works to highlight these depictions as documents of the ever-changing landscape and our evolving perspectives

on Rensselaer County. This summer The Arts Center will offer programming to complement and directly reflect this unique exhibit. This programming will be offered across mediums, and will result in a current body of student work exhibited at the RCHS alongside the standing exhibition in the fall, with the opening on September 25th during Troy Night Out.

OUr PHILOSOPHYCreativity transcends traditional ways of doing things and is the key to innovation. It is not tied to a specific subject matter or medium, and influences all aspects of human thought and activity. It is an essential part of the human experience that can and should be encouraged, nurtured, and allowed to flourish in a supportive and respectful environment. Through an exploration of their own creativity, and then by sharing that experience, people can not only achieve their highest potential but have the ability to transform and enrich the community and the larger world beyond. Creative thinking is the key to sustainable human experience.

OUr MISSION The Arts Center of the Capital Region engages people in the creative experience. We are the regions preeminent proponent of the arts and creative education, expression, and appreciation, serving peo-ple of all ages, abilities, and economic and cultural backgrounds.

2015 AIR PROGRAM ARTISTS MORGAN KELLY (LEFT)Winter Residency: January 1st -March 31st 2015

Morgan Kelly is a puppeteer and teaching artist based in Schoharie County. Her background is in Educational Theatre and Puppetry. She has toured nationally and internationally performing original puppet theatre work. Her educational background is a BA in Theatre from Marlboro College and an MA in Educational Theatre from NYU.

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about what you have been working on during your residency at the Arts Center?I have been creating a puppet show called Day/Night/Day. It is a short puppet piece for young audiences. I wrote the script about 5 years ago, this residency has been my opportunity to build the show and make it a reality.

Q: How do you feel this residency has helped you grow as an artist? This residency has given me the opportunity to build a puppet show that is reflective of many of my interests as a person and an artist: childhood, play, color, wood, shadow and imagination, among other things! It has given the challenge to work on my own timeline, being self-directed in my work. I have had many opportunities to design and build puppet work for other people, but this was a unique experience in that it was my own concept being brought to fruition.

Q: Do you have a favorite experience from the time youve spent in residency at the Arts Center?Working in the woodworking studio was really fun for me, also working in the Multi-purpose room, having access to a variety of materials there was really a gift as a puppeteer! Watching the show grow each week was really fun.
