ALPFA IMPACT 5

Focusing on Global Impact of Hispanics

The Latino community in America is growing faster than expected, and that growth

is creating a tremendously positive impact on business, education, and culture.

This trend is driven not only by Latinos in the U.S., however, but also by Latin

American countries.

We have all heard about the growing buying power of Latinos, which is some place

upwards of $1.5 trillion for U.S. Hispanics. But what some may not be aware of is

the critical role the global Hispanic market plays in the U.S. economy. In fact, while

China’s undeniable trading importance is most discussed, and it represents 15% of

America’s total trade, did you know Mexico is closing in, accounting for a staggering 13.5% of our trade? If

we look at Mexico as an example of this global Latino impact, we realize:

• Mexico is the 2nd largest market for our own exports ($240 billion), and the U.S. is the largest

market for Mexican exports ($294 billion).

• Trade in goods and services totals almost $1.5 billion per day between the two countries.

• Approximately 6 million U.S. jobs, spread across every state in the union, depend on trade with Mexico.

To further underscore the dependency of the U.S. economy on the global Latino community, let us compare

the trade with China with that of Latin America overall. The importance of the aforementioned trade with

China is well touted, yet our total trade with Mexico, the Central America region, and South America in 2014

was approximately $567 billion … vs. $590 billion with China. As one analyst observed, “It’s no exaggeration

to say Latin American trade is critical to our survival as an economic superpower.”

This snapshot demonstrates that Latinos are playing an indispensable role on the global economic stage.

But while the U.S. Hispanic market represents the largest high-growth market opportunity, despite the

impressive figures, many retailers, marketers and corporations, including large e-commerce companies, fail

to address or target this market that has grown almost 50% in the last five years alone!

We know it will take clearheaded leadership for this world-class

economic power community not only to be catered to, but also to

correct the sectors that are making these types of erred decisions.

That is where ALPFA comes in. We develop leadership to steer

America and its top corporations. ALPFA is also scaling its efforts in

order to expand the ranks of top leadership to include Latino leaders.

Part and parcel of this is tapping into our millennial membership’s

disruptive tendency through entrepreneurship. To this end, ALPFA has launched the Latino Business 500,

an innovative program connecting entrepreneurs, providing development and unique connections from

which may emerge the next must-have app or blockbuster startup.

Latinos have grown in economic power and electoral power – that is indisputable. But we still lag significantly

behind in representation in management, C-Suites, corporate boards, and the overall top ranks of

organizations, agencies, and the corporate world.

We believe this puts our nation and our industries at risk and we endeavor to address this… for the good of

all. Latinos are the product of a global market and a global melting pot – harnessing this power only makes

America grow stronger and sounder.

Ask yourselves: In today’s global world, how will you help galvanize Latinos’ impact? Join us in leading

the way.

“It’s no exaggeration to

say Latin American

trade is critical to our

survival as an economic

superpower.”

Empowering Latino Leaders

CEO LETTER: CHARLIE GARCIA

ALPFA IMPACT 7

The future of America depends on the future of America’s Latinos. The statistics

are clear: numbering nearly 60 million, Latinos are the fastest growing

segment of the American population, tripling in strength over the past 25

years. Meanwhile, our nation has significant workforce and entrepreneurial gaps

to fill. As a result, there is no better way for America to succeed than to support

the success of the Latino community, enabling millions of hard-working,

motivated, capable Latinos to fill those gaps.

But first we must invest in Latinos, and invest in the kind of mentoring, guidance,

networking, and support that it takes to develop powerful contributors and leaders. America’s Latinos

deserve the opportunity to lead, our nation needs them to lead, and, with your support, ALPFA will ensure

that Latinos’ path to leadership is a real and strong one.

ALPFA’s mission is to empower and develop Latino men and women as leaders of character for the nation,

in every sector of the global economy. We open doorways for Latinos to gain access to guidance, networks,

careers, and capital, while simultaneously creating the pipeline of leaders that our economy demands.

And we have an approach that works. At a time when the business community is desperately seeking

talent, and America’s young Latinos are desperately seeking opportunity, ALPFA has helped thousands of

Latino professionals gain the skills and connections they need to move from the outside of America’s

economic mainstream to the center of it. Connecting gifted employees to terrific employers, ALPFA’s

proven model has made it the “go to” organization for companies seeking Latino talent. We have also

served as a proven growth accelerator for Latino entrepreneurs, helping them to build networks, access

capital, and scale much more rapidly and successfully than they otherwise could have.

As America experiences explosive growth in our Latino population, there is an opportunity and an

imperative for ALPFA to play a critical role in ensuring that we make the most of that growth. So we will

proudly empower career-ready college students, placing thousands of Latino college students in top

internship and employment opportunities; proudly develop the next generation of Latino professionals

(watch us grow our 48,000 membership base even larger!); proudly catalyze the growth of Latino

entrepreneurs; and proudly implement innovative, strategic partnerships with other leading organizations,

such as Junior Achievement USA and Management Leadership for Tomorrow, connecting Latino

professionals with the best leadership development opportunities available in our country.

ALPFA works. ALPFA facilitates authentic, long-lasting change. ALPFA has a real impact. I thank you for being

part of that impact and ask you to join us on this continued adventure for Latinos’ – and America’s -- future.

Saludos,

Charles P. Garcia

Disability Facts that Might Surprise Youcourtesy of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual)

In times like these, good decisions matter. And when it comes to protecting a portion of your income from disability risks, it’s important to base

your decision on the facts. In the case of disability, some of those facts might surprise you.

For example, more than one-quarter of today's 20 year-olds will become disabled before they retire.1 And if you are covered by a group disability

income policy through your employer, you might not know about the likely gap between your policy’s benefits and your family’s actual needs.

To start with, the typical group plan only covers 50-70% of income.

And benefits are often taxable, have maximum limits, and don’t

cover bonuses, commissions or 401(k) contributions. In some

cases, worker’s compensation helps bridge the gap, but less than

5% of disabling accidents and illnesses are work related.

If you run a business, your insurance protection should help cover

its operating costs, possibly provide the funds for a partnership

buyout, and protect a portion of lost earnings – either yours or your

employees’.

The most common way to reduce the gap between existing

coverage and actual needs is to obtain a supplemental individual

disability income insurance policy. Because you own it, you can

take it with you throughout your career.

And the best way to make a good decision about that policy is to

work with a trusted, trained financial professional. No surprise there.

When it comes to protection insurance, you deserve an experienced

provider. That's why we're excited to tell you that through your

membership with ALPFA you have access to discounted Disability

Income Insurance and certain other protection products issued by

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual).

Top 6 Tips for Maximizing Professional Developmentby Robert Half International

If there’s one thing every employer appreciates, it’s a worker who

demonstrates a desire for self-improvement. One of the best ways

to sharpen your skills and stay on top of accounting trends is

through continual professional development. When you take the

time and make the effort to keep learning, you’ll help the company

move forward while rising to the top of your professional game.

There are several options for maximizing professional development.

Use one, several or all of these ways to grow as a finance and

accounting specialist:

1. Professional certifications

Enrich yourself and your skills by working toward an in-demand designation. A CPA, CMA or another professional certification goes a long

way toward bolstering your professional development. It also shows your employer you’re eager to add value to the company and better

serve clients. An added bonus: You could negotiate a higher salary after you’ve received your credential. According to the 2015 Salary Guide

from Robert Half, new hires can expect to earn 5 to 15 percent more if they have a professional certification or graduate degree.

2. Brown-bag talks

Maximize the time you have in the office by attending a lunchtime discussion. It’s a fast and easy way to learn from experts, expand

your knowledge and keep on top of industry trends. In fact, research from Robert Half’s The People Puzzle found that among CPAs

surveyed, on-site workshops or brown-bag sessions were the preferred method of receiving training. Besides professional

development, lunchtime talks give you the opportunity to network in-house and deepen relationships with colleagues.

Page 11: Summer 2015

3. Mentoring

Many companies have formal programs that match up junior employees with midlevel or senior staff. Being involved in a mentoring

relationship is a great way to get career advice, learn from a finance veteran and expand your existing skill set. If your organization has

such a program, take advantage of it. If it doesn’t, you can find your own mentor at work. It may take more effort and boldness, but the

friendship and professional development that comes with this type of relationship is well worth it.

4. Online courses and conferences

Virtual conferences are great resources for professional development as they offer lectures, interactive workshops and panel

discussions you can access from the comfort of your desk. Some even offer credits you can apply toward earning or maintaining

professional certifications. Another benefit of the virtual conference or summit is that the fee typically includes access to an online

resource, which means the information presented in the sessions is easily retrievable. If you’re looking to focus on a particular topic, you

can sign up for webinars and online courses. Some are free, while others require a fee. Many companies cover the cost of virtual

training, so be sure to ask your manager if the company will pay for it.

5. Off-site conferences

Although the Internet is a great tool for professional development, there are many benefits to attending off-site conferences and

seminars in person. Though they cost more money and require travel time, conventions have the buzz and energy not found with most

online sessions. They also allow you to interact with vendors to learn about new products and services, and see live demos. In addition,

off-site events allow you to enlarge your professional network, both quantitatively and geographically. Face-to-face discussions with new

contacts can expose you to new tools and practices applicable to your job.

6. Performance development planning

While your supervisor may suggest professional development opportunities, sometimes you need to take matters into your own hands.

As part of career progression and goal setting, develop your own performance development plan. List a few skills you would like to

develop or hone, then outline the necessary steps to accomplish your goals. When you’re ready, present this plan to your boss and

explain how the training will make you a more valuable employee. The People Puzzle found that surveyed employees want to improve

their abilities in management, public speaking, valuation, Excel, financial analysis, SQL, budgeting and auditing.

You’re in charge of your own career, so make it a priority to invest in your skill set. Only when you get the professional development you

need will you reach your full potential. Online courses, mentoring and additional training are just a few of the ways to help you get there.

PROFESSIONAL IMPACTProfessional development and career-building opportunities are the focus

of ALPFA activities for Latino professionals.

On April 27th, 2015, ALPFA Charlotte and The University of

North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) celebrated the conclusion of

their second collaborative mentorship program. The program,

launched last Fall by the recently formed UNCC ALPFA Charlotte

student chapter, provides UNCC students with the opportunity to

get direct exposure to ALPFA Charlotte’s network of professional

members and sponsors.

Considering many of the Latino student body at UNCC are first

or second generation college students, they are often without

guidance during the transition from student to professional.

Therefore, this mentorship program becomes a most valuable

resource by connecting UNCC students with local professional

members who work at companies such as NYL, TIAA-CREF,

Red Ventures, Deloitte, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, BB&T and

E&Y, and, who can mentor with their professional real-world

advice as well as share their network.

Genesis Nunez, Vice President of the Student Chapter said:

“The fact that students are matched with a mentor who has past

experience, or, who is currently working in the career the

student would like to pursue makes things so much easier to be

able to get answers to questions regarding that specific field.”

Nunez goes on to say, “Being able to connect with these

mentors reassured me of my career goals. I am so glad that I

have been part of such a great program and I would

recommend it to every student who joins ALPFA. “

The North Carolina based professional chapter wishes to

continue strengthening the partnership with UNCC as well as

establish new mentorship programs with other local universities

in Charlotte in order to continue making an impact.

On March 19th, 2015 ALPFA Chicago collaborated with NABA

Chicago for the 2nd Annual Women’s History Month Event. The

event, titled “Women Impacting the Workplace and Beyond” was

generously sponsored by J.P. Morgan Chase and held at the

Chicago Chase Towers, with almost 200 attendees! New York

Life and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra also attended as

affiliate sponsors.

The evening began with networking which was then followed by 3

workshops that focused on work/life integration, with topics that

included: Career Development, Becoming a Superhero, and also,

a Working Moms Fireside Chat. The event concluded with a main

panel discussion that highlighted women of influence who are

leaders in their community, financially savvy in planning future

financial goals, and who have adopted work/life integration

practices that have allowed them to be impactful on a greater

scale within their communities. Eight strong diverse professional

women spoke throughout the night!

The IMPACT message at this event was empowerment of our

members with professional development opportunities so that

they were able to could create open dialogue discussions at all

levels of their career and family life.

Members enjoyed the event networking opportunities along

with the event content in particular, the workshops. Leadership

overheard a lot of buzz that the “Becoming a Superhero workshop

was by far the best one, since attendees were really were able to

focus on their current career goals.

Houston, Texas – On Thursday, April 16, 2015, ALPFA Houston

partnered with My Harvest Field Independent Insurance and

Financial Advisors to host its Annual Post Busy Season Networking

Event at The Springbok Restaurant in Downtown Houston.

Rocio Saldana, chapter Director of Events, kicked off the program

with welcoming remarks and introduction of My Harvest Field’s

Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Zameer Updahya. Mr. Updahya

then kicked off an icebreaking event that separated everyone in

attendance into groups. The groups were then provided My Harvest

Field literature and asked to share their own personal experiences

with wealth management amongst their groups. Everyone who

attended the event consistently praised this unique icebreaker

approach which allowed them to meet and learn from each

other’s experiences.

Thereafter, Mr. Upadhya spoke to the group and explained the

background behind the name “My Harvest Field”. “A farmer makes

his living by the harvest that he grows in his fields. Each of us has

our own field that we harvest. For some of us it is done through our

professions as teachers, engineers, attorneys, entrepreneurs, line

workers, retailers, and doctors. Whatever your profession, we know

that you work very hard to build your harvest and provide for your

family. This is your harvest field. Our job is to help you protect your

financial assets through appropriate insurance coverage and to

grow them with sound financial planning. Thus the name My

Harvest Field; we are here to help you manage your financial

harvest,” said Zameer Updadhya. My Harvest Field assists

Individuals and Business Owners “Protect their Financial Assets”.

Mr Updadhya advises clients with financial planning that includes

insurance protection, investment allocation, and estate planning.

The event wrapped up with an update from Daniel Arredondo,

chapter Membership Director, regarding the status of ALPFA’s new

membership model. ALFPA Houston thanks My Harvest Field for

hosting our event, the Springbok Restaurant for providing the

venue, and all board members and members for making this event

the success that it was.

This year, ALPFA Philadelphia has been making a positive impact

on Latino professionals throughout Greater Philadelphia, as well as

surrounding areas with a monthly Professional Networking

reception at the local Hard Rock Cafe. The after-work mixers

provides an opportunity for leaders of the organization to personally

communicate with members face-to-face, while also connecting

them to a diverse set of special guests and speakers from the

corporate world who offer advice and encouragement. In addition,

the event, which regularly draws sellout crowds, serves as a

successful outreach platform for the chapter’s membership drive

efforts, with inquisitive new faces leaving with a deeper

understanding of and excitement for ALPFA’s brand and mission.

The events have allowed ALPFA Philadelphia to effectively pursue

its organizational commitment to developing Latino and Latina

leaders with the help of key sponsors, including, New York Life.

Through introductory messages from ALPFA Philadelphia Chapter

President, Javier Suarez, as well as various special announcements

from the Executive Board, a key message of the event is the

importance of visibility for Latinos in the Delaware Valley. As a

community, Latino successes can often go unnoticed without strong

avenues for forging connections and celebrating with like-minded

individuals.

Furthermore, the events play a vital role in ALPFA’s ongoing

commitment to uplifting students. Each month, the Professional

Networking Reception invites leaders from various Student

Chapters as well as other college students—and even high school

students—interested in the benefits of mingling with our

exceptional crowd and becoming members of the ALPFAmilia!

Thank you to The Hard Rock Cafe for allowing the ALPFA

On Saturday April 11th, ALPFA Twin Cities, in collaboration with Mike

O’Neil- a Forbes Top 50 Social Media Power Influencer and LinkedIn

Authority- conducted a comprehensive half-day workshop on utilizing

LinkedIn to its fullest potential. Mr. O’Neil led the presentation, which

took place on the University of St. Thomas campus in downtown

Minneapolis. Refreshments and raffle prizes were generously

provided by Target Corporation and delicious Latin-inspired gourmet

treats were donated by Minneapolis-based Marcelita’s Cookies.

After an overview of LinkedIn “Key Do’s and Don’ts” was followed

by an in-depth review of how to best leverage the website’s available

profile-building and networking features, and finally; attendees were

given tips on how to build a unique profile that will help them market

themselves to stand out from the crowd. According to Mike, “It is best

to dive in and build your profile now and not wait until

unemployment.” By building a network through connecting with

individuals and joining groups geared toward areas and industries of

interest, access to hiring managers and professionals at a variety of

companies is more readily available than ever before. The interactive

discussions during the presentation ranged from LinkedIn tools and

functionality that the audience was previously unaware of, to several

‘what if’ scenarios and how Mike, as a seasoned networking

professional and LinkedIn aficionado, would tackle them. One of the

key areas of impact from the event was Mike’s ability to connect with

the audience one on one while expounding upon those lessons, so

that everyone in the audience could

benefit from them. The diverse

demographic of the audience, ranging

from all age groups and professions,

proved to make the discussion

even more thought-provoking. The

workshop was geared toward helping

every individual in attendance take

away valuable lessons to apply to their

LinkedIn footprint and reap the most

benefit from this multifaceted tool.

ALPFA members and guests had

overwhelmingly positive feedback;

much of it being focused around

Mike’s passion for LinkedIn and

subject matter knowledge. Other guests commented on how they

benefitted from a setting that consisted of people from different stages

of their careers and industries and the chance to share and learn from

one another. ALPFA Twin Cities members were able to walk away

and immediately put into action what they learned at the workshop,

with one member reporting back the very next week to say, “I have

already made several updates to my LinkedIn profile based on the

workshop and I look forward to partnering with Mike on future events!”

ALPFA Valencia College visits BNY Mellon’s Financial District HQ.

On the week of April 6th, 2015, fourteen student leaders from the

newly formed ALPFA Valencia College chapter made the trek from

Orlando, Florida up to New York City for 3 days of sight-seeing,

exploration, and discovery – the majority having never previously

visited New York City. Leaders of the ALPFA Orlando Chapter

thought it would be a good idea for these students to head down to

the Financial District in order to visit the offices of this year’s ALPFA

Convention sponsor host – BNY Mellon. Upon getting the call, and

as a proud employee of BNY Mellon, I needed to ensure these

students received the best possible experience and so what better

way than to give them a tour of our brand new trading floor – a

marvelous showplace for BNY Mellon’s strategic commitment to

leadership in e-trading services. The new Global Markets trading

floor extends 12 feet into the atrium, with a distinctive gold glass

wall framed both above and below by two, 20-inch-high definition

message panels providing visitors with news on market conditions

and developments at BNY Mellon. Needless to say, “The students

were engaged, curious, gracious, and professional. I was impressed.

A fine testament to the efforts of the Orlando Chapter to facilitate

opportunities for their students to develop into leaders of character,

truly in line with ALPFA’s mission nationwide.” This opportunity would

not have been possible without BNY Mellon’s enduring vision and

aspiration for Global Diversity and Inclusion; to promote an inclusive

environment that leverages diversity and differences, and recognizes

and advances top talent through a culture of meritocracy. BNY Mellon

is and continues to be a tremendous supporter of ALPFA and

promises this year’s Convention to be the most grand yet.
