Photo Competition Winner

Our Photo14 competition attracted a lot of entries, and our

three judges deliberated long and hard over the outcome.

The theme was “what Scotland means to me”, and we

received a variety of interpretations, from images of munros

and monuments to the odd bottle of Irn Bru. The overall

winner, though, was Rona Stewart’s picture of three rams

looking through a fence (below). The judges said “Rona’s

photo is a fantastic composition. It’s sharp, beautifully-

framed and captures her Highland heritage.” Rona won an

iPad for herself and 10 iPads for Kingussie High School,

where she is currently studying for her Highers.

Rona was presented with her prize at an assembly on a

sunny April morning in Kingussie. She is pictured here with

her art teacher David Douglas, and Andrew James of Scran.

There were also two further winners of the

Photo14 competition. See page 3 for more details.

Nepal images on Scran Like many of you, we were shocked by the images of the recent

earthquakes in Nepal. For any teachers or others who would like

to explore this topic and place it in context, we have a great deal

of Nepalese material on Scran, thanks to Scottish travellers and

institutions, who have been collecting material over the years.

These images include religious scenes (the population is largely

Hindu), as well as aspects of everyday life and culture in Nepal,

and a fantastic look at the music of Nepal by ethnologist Jean

Jenkins. We also have a number of diagrams of seismic activity

from the Oxford Designers and Illustrators.

Costa Rica

Scran continues to showcase images from around

the world, including a wonderful new set of

photographs of Costa Rica from Cairns Aitken. These

colourful photos showcase the many charms of the

country, from its exotic wildlife to its food and its

people. This great new resource will be of value to

geography and global citizenship lessons, as well as

to teachers of art & design and FE students studying

travel and tourism.

Primary winner

The winner in the Primary section of our recent

Photo14 competition was Angus Johnston of

Dunbarney Primary School. His image of two boys

jumping into Portsoy Harbour was judged to be the

most accomplished of the hundreds of entries we

received.

The judges said "There was just such a sense of fun that

came across in this one. The facial expressions of the

boys jumping into the water were just fantastic, and so

well captured.” Angus said “I chose this photo because

it captures a picture of enjoyment and also it is filled

with light just waiting for a photographer to come along

and capture the inspiring photo."

Angus received an iPad for himself, and three further

iPads for the school.

ASN winner

A joint effort by the Tiree class at Isobel Mair School was the

winner of the ASN section of our Photo14 competition. The

children explored their local surroundings and took lots of

photos of the environment. The judges found this image of a

mysterious path through a wood particularly striking; they

commended it for its sense of "calmness" and the feeling

that you “really could be there in the photograph.” The

members of the class were particularly excited when Scran

presented them with their prize of a set of iPads at special

school assembly, and you can see this in the picture (below)

we took on the day!

You can see all three winners’ photos (which

will soon be joined by the other entrants’

pictures) at:

HIV/Aids Archives

We are very pleased to add a large number of

posters, leaflets and other materials to Scran,

courtesy of Lothian Health Services Archive. These

promotional items were part of the campaign to

educate young people about the dangers of HIV/Aids

in the 1990s, and while they have a certain historic

value, the message is still as important today.

These will be of immense value to anyone teaching or

studying citizenship, public health or biology, as well

as to art & design and social subjects students and

teachers. See the full collection here.

Carney Heritage Videos

We are grateful to Don Carney of Carney Heritage Productions

for kindly licensing a number of long-form video clips on

historic Aberdeenshire to Scran. Available to view at

http://www.scran.ac.uk/s/1089+in+project , the videos show

various aspects of rural life in the past, including farming,

education, home life and the memories of a prisoner of war in

World War II. They’re ideal for cross-curricular work, covering

Language & Literacy, Social Subjects, Mathematics and Health

& Wellbeing. Subscribers are free to view and download these

superb clips for personal and educational use.
