WOW! Where has the academic year gone?! It is amazing to think that this is our 3rd issue of WEARNEWS and that the year has gone by so very quickly. Interhouse Sports Tournament

I have adored all my seven

years here at Wearhead

because I have learnt lots

of things but have had fun

at the same time. There

have been lots of things

that I have enjoyed includ-

ing all the sports activities

This term we were visited by a person called Fiona. She taught us how

to upload sightings of animals onto the wild watch website and demon-

strated to us a trap to capture (but not

harm) moths and showed us some of

them. We made bird feeders: you get a

pine-cone, cover it with fat then tie

string to it and roll birdseed into it and

hang it outside.

We have already recorded several sightings of wildlife—including the bumblebees we caught (and released) with Mandy from Nectar Works.

This term I have organised our first Interhouse sports tournament. I picked some events including a sprint, long distance, obstacle course and much more. However some events had to be removed be-cause we ran out of time. I split the races into different categories (Year 3/4,Year 2

and Year 1/reception) and de-signed tick-ets for them. In the end Top Cat won, Tom & Jerry came 2nd and Garfield came 3rd.

Moving On Year 6 Editor

Here is what Becky and Mil-lie wrote about it...

Daniel Dunn our only Y6 pupil organised a sports tournament it was fun because there was run-ning, hurdling, egg and spoon races and lots more. Also the teams were in our house teams. However it was tiring but it was fun! In was on Tuesday– 3rd of June also it took part in Wearhead school grounds.

Isabel said “I liked the hurdling.” Then Jessica said ’” enjoyed the run-ning” and Willow com-mented “I LIKED THE SPINTING!!!!”

Next Fern said “I liked the egg and spoon race.”

On the 17th of June the juniors of Wear-head school went to Killhope museum to examine the new exhi-bition. When we ar-rived at the museum we proceeded through the front office and into the main exhibition. The spar boxes were superb. Mhairi com-mented “Killhope is amazing because

there are lots of facts.” Johno commented “lots of games like fun house mirror and lots of facts make Killhope

fun.” By Dan N and Johno

Tuesday 15th July is a very im-portant day for Wearhead chil-dren. We are off to join other schools at Wolsingham to take part in the Guinness world record attempt for lots of hoola hooping! We will tell you more about it in the next edition.

Mrs Evans writes: the infants had a go hoola hooping when they went to Maiden Castle in Durham. They had a wonder-ful time using hoola hoops from HOOP STARZ. The staff were encouraged to have a go too…they were very resilient... trying their best, but I feel that this wasn’t really their cup of tea! These are though:

Mrs Judges adds: Wearhead Jun-iors were delighted to receive an invitation from Killhope to analyse the new exhibition from a child’s point of view. I was impressed with how seriously KS2 took this task. Our visit lasted nearly an hour and every child was en-grossed with the job at hand. Once back at school, we dis-cussed our thoughts and Daniel typed up our findings. This has been sent to the museum and I am sure that the staff there will find it useful. On behalf of Wear-head School, I would like to thank the museum for allowing us free entry.

This half-term we have had an Ath-letics Festival at St. Johns Chapel Primary. We were all very exited.

When we arrived Mrs Loftus told us how the morning would happen. First the Boys did field events (throwing & jumping) and the girls did track events (running). For the boys the first event was javelin, followed by the triple jump, long jump and lastly the shot putt. However the girls did hurdles first followed by sprint, 300m. Then we swapped round and the boys were doing the track events and the girls doing field events. Be-cause some of the track events were run in heats we had to do a finals. Millie got through to the 60m sprint finals and Johno got through to the 60m too. And I got through into the 60m sprint,80m sprint 60m hur-dles.

Overall I came first in the 800m, jave-lin, triple jump and 60m sprint. Johno came 3rd in Yr. 3/4 boys the sprint, Becky came 2nd in the Yr3/4 girls 60m sprint, Dan came 4th in the Yr3/4 boys 60 m sprint, Willow came 5th in the Yr3/4 girls long jump, Millie came 3rd in the Yr. 3/4 girls 60m sprint and Mhairi came 4th in the long jump.

However I was lucky enough to get through to help represent the Wear Valley and Teesdale group at Shildon in the triple jump.

Shildon:

When I went to Shildon I had to leave at 8:50am, we arrived at 10:00. I was in the Wear valley & Teesdale group. Mrs Loftus told us where our events would be all the boys field events where done simultaneously while the track events where done one after the other I came 8th out of the ten people in the triple jump. Then seeing as know one I knew was there I came back to school.

out what they were. There was a code to solve! In the afternoon we looked at dead bees under a mi-croscope. This was fascinating and very exciting. We recorded information about bees onto a fact-file as well as recording the bees we had seen in the morning on the WILDWATCHERS website. It was a super day. Mandy is going to work with us over the next school year! Millie and Francis

On Friday 20th June we met Man-dy again, from Nectar works (run by the North Pennines AONB). She taught us about bumble bees. First, Mandy told us about bee safety. Then we went to look around the grounds for plants and trees that bees like. We actually saw a white tailed bee flying into a nest! After that, we went on a bee hunt to identify the bees. Mandy had put up large photos of bees and we needed to guess or work

snippets of information and a serious message too. It was a whole school effort and the completed scrap book was sent off to the judges in May.

We do not know if we have won a prize. We will let you know in the next edition.

The Total Green awards is an award given to a school that has sent in a presentation file that has impressed the judges. There are several categories to enter. The prize was £1000 for national, £500 for regional and £100 for good en-tries.

The Eco-Warriors decided that it would be a great idea to make a scrapbook of our Waste week acitivities—including lots of photos,

Our Memories of Daniel Dunn We will miss Daniel because he is fun, exciting and an all round jolly good fellow. He has many titles - one of them is International man of mystery! Mrs Judg-es has given him the titles as the year has progressed. Some of the children have many memories of him like all these:

Jessica said the inter house sports day that Daniel organised for us was the best in the world. Mhairi also men-tioned that she too had en-joyed the sports day. Willow commented that he has good

den building ideas. Mrs Hayes remarked that she would always re-member Daniel and that his spelling of her surname on a Christmas card had been wonderfully creative! Mrs Judges said that she would have many memories of Daniel but the one that stood out in her mind was the way he calmly coped with some technology issues running up to the Christmas Concert! My own memory of him is him coming 1st at bowling at my 9th birthday party.

Back to my Roots

Sorry Daniel! The WEARNEWS gremlins couldn’t resist popping this picture of you into the publication before it went to print! This photo shows you at Cowshill and Lanehead Hall, working on the the centenary matting project in 2009!

PS Daniel is the one on the left of the photo.

This fantastic event happened right at the very end of the Spring Term. Here, Jessica and Mhairi reflect on what was a very good even-ing:

We have been working with Harriet for over 10 weeks and we have reached the Concert called Back To My Roots! Everyone was nervous. We changed into our costumes, Jessica and Francis commented “the costumes were very nice.”

At the start of the concert Dan Nattrass wel-comed everyone. Then the concert began! Our first song was Cockles and Mussels. It was hard to see the audience but we could hear

them laughing. The stage was very high!

In the middle of the concert there was a raffle led by Mrs Evans then the concert continued. The next song was the market song after that the adults sung who will buy from the musical Oliver. Many thanks to Killhope Museum for letting us borrow their costumes.

On the 20th of May 2014 we went to plant poppies at St. Thomas’ Church. First we got our cups of poppy seeds. Next we started to scatter the pop-py seeds at the clearing next to the church while a prayer was read out. After we had scattered the pop-py seeds we were given information about the 7 people who died in world war one who were from

the Lane head and Cows hill communities. We went in side to write in a visi-tors book. When we got back to the school we started to write a report about our visit for the Weardale gazette.

SJC y3/4 team; second place Wearhead followed by Hamsterly.

In the y5/6 matches, SJC won. Overall, Wearhead come 4th in the competition. The yard was busy and crowded and it was amazing how many people could get in the school!

By Willow, Mhairi and with help from Francis

On the 22nd of May the juniors took part in the rescheduled bas-ketball festival held here at our school! Compared to the previ-ous time, the day was sparkling with sun shine! The morning was divided into sessions: throwing practice, dribbling practice as well as the matches. 5 teams compet-ed and everyone had fun because our school has proper sized hoops!

The results were: in first position

When we went to the light house we went in groups: Chapel school went with a nice lady called Jean. And Wearhead school went with a man called Bill and we learned that they had to put long curtains down if they didn’t have the curtains the sun would shine through the windows and burn the

light inside. We had lunch on top of a hill next to the light house! After lunch we went to the seaside and built sandcastles and went into the sea WE GOT VERY WET!!!! After we went to the beach we got ice creams they were tasty.

Wearhead School and Recep-tion from St. John’s Chapel Primary school visited Thros-sel Hole at Carrshield recently.

When we arrived, Reverend Kyosie greeted us and we gave her a huge box of provi-sions for the Abbey—this was to say thank you for having us. The Abbey has a praying room with cupboards around the walls. These are used for visi-tors to pull down a bed from and sleep.

It’s a quiet place where the

man and a poorly man. We did meditation, we had to face the wall and relax. You could have a cushion or kneeler. For your meals you would eat in silence. We went on Wednes-day 30th April 2014.

By Fern and Jessica.

Earlier this term Mrs Mavin brought in some instruments of the orchestra and we got to play the cello, bassoon, violin, flute, trumpet and some more. She talked about the families like the woodwind, strings, brass and percussion. Kev played a tune on the violin. We did

wives out of felt. Millie said ”I re-ally liked making the felt ban-ners.” After this we also saw the Silver Swan and Becky said “I found out that the silver swan was over 200 years old. Finally, we split into two groups and some of us went to look at the dresses in one of the galleries. They were very tight and the shoes pointy. As a special treat, Mrs Evans and Mrs Judges

On Friday 6th of June the Jun-iors went to The Bowes Muse-um at Barnard Castle. We all made a tussy-mussy with Mis-tress Nell. A tussy-mussy is made of herbs and flower pet-als. Mistress Nell told us about how the Tudors would eat food, set the table and told us what some of the Tudor food was called. At the museum we made Henry VIII and his 6

stopped the cars at Middleton-in Teesdale on the way home so that we could have an ice cream. The Juniors invited Mistress Nell (Education Officer Alison Mount-er) to Wearhead School’s open afternoon. In fact, Mistress Nell said that our group had been the best she’d ever taught!

There are 7 children and 2 adults. Mhairi commented “It is very hard to play but you will get the hang of it”.

It’s not just our friend Daniel who is moving on! Five Y2s are mak-ing a wonderful journey from Class 1 into...Class 2! They are going to start their time in the Juniors. Here Francis reflects about the move to Class 2:

Year 2s have been coming into the juniors for quite a while now—for SEAL work, arty clarty, for literacy and of course for AR quizzes. I’m really excited about becoming a junior because I real-ly like Mrs Judges and I can’t wait to do lots of writing. I have asked all the Y2s if they are scared about moving into the jun-

iors and they all said...NO!
