View in Oakdale recently made its debut for another season of seaside dining and entertainment after more than three months of repairs and renovations post-Hurricane Sandy. The storm hit the restaurant hard in November 2012, causing devastation at the popular spot that has always been known for its spectacular waterfront dining with a view, and the Lessing family vowed to return the landmark to its former glory.

Lessing’s Hospitality, a sixth generation, family-owned and operated business founded in 1890, is one of the most recognizable names in food, service and catering on Long Island. In keeping with the legacy of Lessing’s, View continues to offer exquisite cuisine, professional presentation and excellent service, with a devotion to creating a memorable event for clients and their guests.

The restaurant originally garnered two and a half stars from Newsday’s Peter Gianotti, who wrote, “In addition to losing two syllables, View has dropped the kitsch, streamlined the look – and upped the ante.” Joanne Starkey of The New York Times rated it “Worth It” (equivalent to the former three-star rating) saying, “Besides the water vistas that made its predecessor popular, View now has the food and interior to match its location.” Richard Scholem, reviewer for Long Island Pulse and former food critic for The New York Times, called View, “An innovative, sophisticated eating place with a heavyweight chef.”

The waterfront destination was once a part of William K. Vanderbilt’s 900-acre “Idle Hour” Estate, and panoramic water views of the Connetquot River and Great South Bay remain a mainstay. The original Riverview Restaurant was the Vanderbilt’s old “Tea House,” built in 1888. This part of the restaurant is now known as the Tea Room, marked by fireplaces on each end, and housing a raw sushi bar.

View’s main dining room pairs nautical elements, including modern artwork, with an antique wooden boat. White china, sleek beige leather chairs and sand-wash walls complement mahogany tables and matching columns against hardwood floors. The Grill Room provides more casual dining and boasts a lively bar scene, with French doors leading to the outdoor patio, which offers al fresco dining. Dockside dining also allows guests to dock their boat in one of 20 transient boat slips while being served lunch, dinner or cocktails.

View’s seafood menu, created by Executive Chef William Muzio, offers new dishes and incorporates innovative techniques with old favorites. Since the cuisine focuses on local and fresh resources, the menu changes with each season.

Guests enjoy events such as “Tropical Thursdays” with live island music and $4.50 Heineken and Heineken Light bottles, in addition to Bacardi rum specials. View also hosts $5 Fridays every week from 4 to 7 p.m. Select appetizers, cocktails, beer and wine are available for $5 each at the bar. The appetizer menu features Thai calamari, duck tacos, baked clams and popcorn shrimp. Guests can nibble and sip while watching the sunset over the Great South Bay, followed by live music from a guest DJ.

Letter From The PublisherLet the memories begin... Summer 2013 is officially here!

As we start the season off with yet another milestone, we congratulate our graduates. Although my children are now in college, each summer brings with it a new class of high school students headed off to start their futures, giving our community a sense of camaraderie.

We are celebrating men way past Father’s Day in this summer issue because our LI men are so special. We especially thank you for being at the head of the grill to start off the BBQ season! Be sure to check out our “Man Up” pages for some great Must Haves for men.

With plenty of sunshine, longer days and warm weather upon us, whether we are celebrating, redecorating, vacationing far from home or making Long Island our “destination stay-cation” ... Get ready to enjoy it! This issue is filled with great places we have highlighted, perfect for dining, shopping and playing.

I am so happy to have View as our front cover, as my own family and friends have so many fond memories of great times enjoyed here. They are beautifully revamped, and it’s good to have them back after Sandy, as it is with all our wonderful restaurants that were also affected.

Our new About Town Social Page is about making memories, snap shots of your celebrations and your friends who reside in our area. Take a peek and see who’s who!

When you see our “Focus On The Shore” pages, recognize our continuing pledge to you, as our readers, to provide recommendations of Must Know contractors and professionals who can help revamp your home. Let’s go make some memories this summer!

See you around the Great South Bay Area,

The Caribbean’s strongest competitor for warm-weather vacationers is a surprisingly resurgent Mexico, say retailers. Mexico’s pristine beaches and festive culture have long lured honeymooners, but lately more and more couples are crossing the border for the wedding itself. Zesty Tequila, lively mariachis, diverse landscapes from desert to rainforest to beach…its range of resorts satisfies every budget.

After traveling to other destinations over the last few decades, I returned to Mexico to explore the Riviera Maya. I was instantly amazed and captivated by the beauty and charm of the resorts, as well as the people. I had forgotten the caring attitudes, friendliness and attention to detail. News media has frightened many visitors, but having traveled to this area four times in the last five years, I have never felt threatened nor encountered any issues.

The local charm, along with the white sand beaches, provides many sporting options. Beyond the beach lies a bounty of history and nature as well, from ancient Mayan ruins to ecological parks. Whether you’re after discovery, luxury or just a great tan, the Riviera Maya has you covered. My many visits have offered me the opportunity to swim in an underground cave, horseback ride on a beach, climb Mayan ruins and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of Mexico.

Non-stop airlift from the New York airports and countless all-inclusive resorts offer preferable options. Let me know if you would like more information or further details about Karisma Resorts.

Charcoal cooking is making a comeback in the past couple of years. It surpasses gas in flavor and price categories. It takes 15 or 20 minutes using a chimney starter to heat up a charcoal grill.

Charcoal time-savers. Use a chimney starter for charcoal grilling. It’s an upright metal cylinder with a handle on the outside and a wire rack inside. To use, fill the space under the wire rack with wadded newspaper, and then fill the space above the rack with briquettes.

Pizza Stone “Just For The Grill Of It.” Best for cooking pizza or flatbread with a crispy crust. A handle allows you to easily move the stone from the grill or rotate it during cooking to adapt to hotter spots. A holder elevates the stone off the surface, so it’s not as likely to crack. A word of caution: The metal holder, like the stone, will be burning hot when moved from the grill, so use oven mitts! Weber Style pizza Stone 6430.

Breitling’s first ever timepiece, still going strong today. This watch is no longer restricted to the wrists of pilots.

Windows 8 How To Smooth The Rough Spots

Windows 8 is a drastic change from Windows 7, Vista, even Windows XP. On the surface, it looks very different than past versions, but there is a similar feel to the operating software, and with a few steps, you can easily become acclimated to the new system. We will cover a few tips in this article to help you make a much smoother transition to Windows 8 and learn fast and efficient ways of using it.

You finally bought your new computer with Windows 8 - Congratulations! now let’s see how to set it up. This is the first step when launching your new computer, and very often people don’t know how to properly do it. When you launch Windows 8 for the first time, you have to provide information so your computer is set to your proper location and preferences, such as date, time, time zone, language and internet connectivity. Be sure to have your wireless information handy, including wifi name and password, or you can connect the internet cable to the computer to proceed to the next step of your Windows set up.

After you are connected, you will be asked to create your computer account. This is a crucial step in the process. Windows 8 is unique with regard to creating accounts, and they prefer to store your username and password online instead. I highly recommend not creating an online account for many reasons. Security is one, as they keep your personal information stored on Microsoft servers, which can be a victim of hacking. So what to do?

At the “Sign Into Your PC” window setup, select “Sign In Without A Microsoft Account” at the bottom of that screen. You can create this account later on in order to use the Microsoft store. While at the Account Creation window, please look at the bottom righthand corner of your screen, where you will see the words “Local Account.” Please select that and create your username and password; the account will then be created on your computer instead, and you will be safer. Please follow the rest of the instructions step by step; they will vary depending upon the computer brand.

Now it’s time for few tips after you log in. It will be a new world to you, but don’t worry - we will provide you with proper usage tips. One issue which came to my attention involved how to shut down your PC with Windows 8. This step is hidden, but not difficult. please drag your cursor to the top righthand corner of your screen, where the left menu panel will slide out. Now go all the way to the bottom right in this panel, where you will see the Gear Icon (Settings). Once you click on this, you will see the Power Button at the bottom; click and it will give you several options - Sleep, Shut Down and sometimes Update and Restart.

We highly recommend to Shut Down your computer for the night whenever you travel (laptops) or leave the house in order to prevent unnecessary risks of damaging your precious PC.

Windows 8How To Smooth The Rough SpotsWindows 8 is a drastic change from Windows 7, Vista, even Windows XP. On the surface, it looks very different than past versions, but there is a similar feel to the operating software, and with a few steps, you can easily become acclimated to the new system. We will cover a few tips in this article to help you make a much smoother transition to Windows 8 and learn fast and effi cient ways of using it.

You fi nally bought your new computer with Windows 8 - Congratulations! now let’s see how to set it up. This is the fi rst step when launching your new computer, and very often people don’t know how to properly do it. When you launch Windows 8 for the fi rst time, you have to provide information so your computer is set to your proper location and prefer-ences, such as time, time zone, language and internet connectivity. Be sure to have your wireless information handy, including wifi name and password, or you can connect the internet cable to the computer to proceed to the next step of your Win-dows set up.

Long Island is best known for its summers well-spent touring the island out east, savoring local sea fare at the new hot spot with friends, and enjoying the surf in Fire Island or Montauk. Or, perhaps you’re more in favor of an afternoon on the golf course or harbor-side with a cool drink and a freshly rolled cigar. Whatever you’ve planned for the upcoming warm weather months, you must look fantastic while doing it.

It used to be that, when the occasion called, a crisp suit was the outfit of choice for the man about town. Fashion is coming full circle and, not surprisingly what with the Mad Men craze still going strong, suits are once again all the rage in menswear. Channel your inner gentleman and splurge this summer on an impeccably fitted made-to-measure suit in a gorgeous lightweight fabric that’s sure to turn heads. Bonus: you can break that suit up for endless summer wardrobe options; great summer style is all about simplicity and versatility.

Should you find yourself in more casual company, try pairing your new “second skin” trousers with a breezy button down and oxfords, another trend in menswear this season, for a relaxed, sophisticated look. Not sure where the day will take you? Pair the blazer with shorts for a modern twist on a classic look. If you’re feeling daring, why not take a cue from the lady in your life and pull some color or pattern into your wardrobe mix? Bright colors aren’t just for women’s wear this season, and summer is the perfect time to have fun with your clothes. Don’t be afraid to mix and match; the key is to allow one color or print to be the focus, then choose an exciting pattern or hue in the same family for an instant style upgrade.Cheers to a stylishly simple summer!

The NYC High Line This park is completely opened and a Must Go for

the summer! The transformation of the historic freight rail line that once carried meat to the meat packing

district is now one of NYC’s most successful public parks, built on a 1.45 mile–long elevated rail structure 30 feet above the street. Located on the West side of Manhattan, the area - which roughly

runs through Gansevoort Street to West 14th Street from the Hudson River - has changed and now

represents the City’s stylish side. With its hot spot for boutiques, restaurants and night life, the meat packing district, coupled with a stroll on the High

Line, is a definite Must Go.

Long Island Greenbelt TrailsSome of our favorites include the Kings Park Bluff and Oyster Bay. The Long Island Greenbelt Trail is a unique, non-profit, grassroots organization that has created more than 200 miles of hiking paths on Long Island - 631.360.0753.

Gardening After SandySandy may be long gone, but what the storm took away from our soil, is not.

Salt makes soil very compact and steals nutrients from it. To remedy this issue, it is advisable to use gypsum, which helps loosen up heavy soil, and sweet peet, which will replenish any lost nutrients.

Creating raised beds for vegetables is not a bad idea, nor are large planters. But this doesn’t mean you don’t need to condition the soil under the raised bed! First, you must mix new, fresh soil with conditioned soil. An ideal mix would be a topsoil and sweet peet mixture. After the vegetables are planted, you will still need to feed them regularly every two weeks with organic food.

The Impatiens Epidemic

Impatiens (walleriana), better known as bedding impatiens, have been under attack by a disease called Downey Mildew, though New Guinea Impatiens have proven to be resistant. This deadly disease, which is airborne, moves from plant to plant, killing off Impatiens and leaving its spores in the soil for many years after. Even if you buy healthy Long Island-grown Impatiens, you will have to get yourself on a spraying schedule to ensure your plants’ health. Green Cure fungicide can help keep this problem in check, but you must be diligent with your spraying. Continuing to plant Impatiens leaves them the potential to become infected, thus prolonging the problem. Some alternative plants which can be used in shaded areas include Begonias, New Guinea Impatiens, Coleus, Lobelia, Torenia and Caladiums. In partial to full sun, try using Salvia, Geraniums, Flowering Vinca and New Guinea Impatiens. Flowering vinca looks very similar to an Impatiens plant and is also deer resistant.

If you are committed to Impatiens walleriana, be sure to purchase only those locally grown and use Green Cure fungicide to treat both the soil and the plants every two weeks.

White Cap Fish & Summer... A True Catch!White Cap Fish Market has become something of a tradition for generations of Long Islanders as a place to buy the highest quality fresh local fish.

Driving down Montauk Highway, you can’t help but notice their large sign. Just south of it, tucked away in the back, is the home of their retail fish market and seafood eatery, which is open year round.

As the weather gets warmer, summertime transforms this perfect hideaway into a vacation-like getaway. The picturesque view from White Cap’s waterside outdoor patio is a prime spot to kick back and relax.

Enjoy a beer or a glass of wine, along with fresh cooked seafood, wonderful chowders or a selection from their raw bar. Commercial fishing vessels on the East Coast unload their catch here, so you can be sure everything on the menu is as fresh as it comes!

ABCDE’s Of Melanoma: What To Look For When Checking Yourself For Skin Cancer

What are the signs to look out for? The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), as well as many other cancer resources, recommends using the “ABCDE’s of Melanoma” when checking yourself for signs of danger:

A is for Asymmetry: One half is different than the other half.B is for Border: The borders of the mole can be scalloped,

jagged, uneven or poorly defined.C is for Color: Dr. Peredo explains that melanomas are

usually dark in pigment, but they can be lighter; basal and squamous cell cancers are usually pinkish.

d is for Diameter: Melanomas usually are greater than 6mm. “They can be smaller, but a general rule is to look for something greater than a pencil eraser,” says Dr. Peredo. Also look for something with an uneven color, usually different shades of brown or black, when it comes to melanomas.

E is for Evolving: Warning signs include a mole that’s different from all your other moles, or is changing in size, shape or color. “Look for anything that’s new or that has changed,” says Dr. Peredo. “For example, if you have a mole that was always there, and suddenly it starts bleeding or itching or bubbling up.”

Also, keep in mind that skin cancers aren’t always raised. “Basal and squamous cell carcinomas in particular can be flat, smooth or scaly; they rarely have pigment and can even

look like dry patches of skin in the early stages,” says Dr. peredo. “Melanoma can be flat or raised.”

“Have a full body exam at least once a year as cancer does not discriminate. Early detection saves lives.”

How To Soak Up The Sun While Sparing Your Skin• Wear a high-SPF sunscreen every day, applying frequently. (preferably every two hours)• Avoid tanning beds, wear protective clothing, a broad

brimmed hat and get a spray tan.• Sunbathe only before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m., limited to

15 minutes a day, for Vitamin D consumption.• Seek the shade when possible, especially between 10

a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are worried about your child’s waterproof sunscreen

washing away, an SPF rash guard is a fun, easy way to add extra protection while they play in the water. A few companies that sell Sun protective clothing for both adults and children are: UVSkinz.com, SunUVA.com and Coolibar.com.

Spray Tanning & Self-TannersSpray tanning and self-tanners are fantastic, safe

alternatives to tanning in the sun. Dr. Peredo recommends Spray di Sole self-tanning spray. Available at Spatique Medical Spa. For more information, call 631.724.7720.

Traditionally Built vs. Manufactured Replacement Home In 2013? You Be The Judge!

When I first received the alert to evacuate my Bay Shore home as hurricane Sandy was bearing down on Long Island’s South Shore, little did I know of the journey my wife, Anne and I would be taking.

On October 30, 2012, I opened my FEMA disaster account and the education started there. Through it all, I kept thinking, How can I just rebuild my home as the question looms: When, not if, will this happen again?

Like many other Long Islanders, I saw the construction trucks buzzing, with the entire home rebuilding industry working from dawn to dusk; but I continued to ask the question, Should I just rebuild or take a more aggressive position like raising my home? I was frozen in time, not moving forward or backward on dozens of big decisions. If it was not for a tremendous act of kindness, I would still be thinking about all the decisions in front of me. That act of kindness came from a true angel, Patty Poulin, wife of FDNY Battalion Chief Frank Poulin and the driving force behind a very special volunteer group made up of our neighbors and north Carolina firefighters, called TaskForce 17.

A special shout out to Jeffrey Clark, Rescue 10 Special Operations Dept, for his tremendous effort and the effort of his entire Charlotte Fire Dept team. Mark Arnold and Lisa Gallucio, thank you for showing me what volunteer work is all

about. After that kick in the butt and more extensive research, it

was determined that my home, built on a slab and out of cinderblock, could not be raised at an economical cost. The option of tearing down and rebuilding a traditional home became a potentially very long process, with most Long Island contractors having work backed up for months. I was convinced by a good friend of mine in the home building industry who said, “You might want to look into manufactured homes, as their construction methods have come a long, long way and can be produced in a third the time.”

My choice became, replace 100% of everything in my home except the four outside walls and stay at the same elevation, or raise and rebuild! Working with a local architect, Michael Dunn, the decision was made to raise the foundation and get out of the water table once and for all. Now I needed to start the process of researching manufactured homes.

Thank goodness for the internet, as I simply googled “Manufactured Homes” and found a dozen that offered free consulting services. After speaking with most of them and spending quite a bit of research time on their websites, I selected Bill Lake Modular Homes, as they offered the best video presentation on what goes into a manufactured home for free on their website, as well as lots of one-to-one consulting. When I toured their manufacturing facility, I saw things like automatic glue guns, which glued every piece of wood that touched another piece of wood. This adds tremendous strength and can only happen in a factory manufactured environment. I saw 2x6 studs in the walls, unlike the 2x4 studs used in traditional home building.

Simply put, this decision is not for the faint of heart, as lots and lots of decisions go into a new manufactured home process. But for me, it was the only way to go.

In addition, we have been told that the value of our home will increase and the flood-related insurances we carry will actually decrease. When was the last time you heard that?

E-mail me, and I will do my best to answer your questions.

Edward Tyler: [email protected]

Some important questions to ask:1. Are homes built in a factory better than homes built out in the elements? 2. how long will it take to build this home? 3. Are quality building products used? 4. Can it be custom designed to my liking?5. Will our town inspectors approve a manufactured home?6. Are manufactured homes built “Green”? 7. What are my costs as compared to a traditionally built home?

FOCUS ON THE SHORE

When all was said and done, we viewed the devastation of nearly 41 inches of Bay water through our one-level home. Many who saw it called it devastating! I called it 38 years of lost memories, as we had boxes of pictures, videos and memorabilia from all over the world (where we had extensively traveled) lost.

Custom Window TreatmentsPut The Finishing Touches On Any Room

Savvy homeowners know it’s not a house’s exterior construction that makes it a home; it’s the interior décor. Even a fully-furnished room will feel bare without one specific finishing touch - the window treatments!

Want to have your windows dressed to impress this summer? Take the time to get in touch with a drape and blind professional to help give your room that warm, homey feel, as well as privacy and vital sun protection.

The first thing to note is that you will want to work with an expert in the field. not only do professional window treatment companies offer all the latest styles, custom and semi-custom work, but they can generally provide these services at the same or better prices than standard do-it-yourself drapes. More affordable and less hassle? How can you go wrong?

When working with a professional, be sure to take advantage of their expertise! There are countless window treatment options available. You may even opt for a combination of drapes, shutters, blinds, shades and/or decorative valences, depending upon the room. Look at samples, ask for advice... above all, you want to be happy with the end result.

Of course, apart from their aesthetic appeal, window treatments can also offer functional boosts which can benefit a home in other ways, such as solar insulation, protection against winter heat loss or excess rays in the summer. This leads to more comfortable interior temperatures.

Window treatments can cut down on drafts too, which are a key culprit in expensive heating and cooling bills. Plantation shutters and honeycomb shades offer complete UV filtering that protects furniture and flooring from sun damage and fading, adding up to significant savings over time.

Get your home ready for summer! Contact S&S Interiors of Long Island. Their experts will help you find just the right fit at an affordable price, all while providing superior customer service and personalized attention to detail. And if you’re looking for more than just window treatments, inquire about their custom interior design and installation services as well.
