Th e vision for Lasallian education’s primary purpose continues to inform us today. Contemporary educational leaders publish studies linking brain-based research and eff ective instruction. U.S. Department of Labor statistics identify the professions that are critical to our nation’s progress and strength. Universities proudly publish the average SAT scores of their incoming freshman classes.

As educators, we pay attention to all of this information and design a relevant and rigorous curriculum to prepare our students for success in college and in life; for a satisfying and impactful future. However, this is not our primary mission.

In this magazine, you will witness the broad impact of our intended goal - to form the young people entrusted to our care. Th e formation of our students is much more than inspirational phrases at the school’s entrance. It is not accomplished by simply reviewing the dress code, nor accomplished with four years of religious studies. Th ese practices all have their place in creating our community, but they do not address the heart of the matter.

Catholic education emphasizes the specifi c understanding of what it means to be human . . . the reality of our spiritual center and connectedness . . . our faith as foundational to all that we do. Our teachers and staff are asked to accompany our students along this incredible journey. It is not enough that teachers deliver an excellent quality curriculum or boast of their students’ eventual collegiate successes.

Message from the President

Forming our Shared Future

Our dedicated educators are asked to impart the reality of the Holy Presence of God . . . to off er a conduit in recognition of the “holiness” in our students’ lives . . . to provide an immersion in the opportunity to be aware of such transformation.

We hold ourselves accountable to our most sacred responsibility - the moral development of our students that will ultimately defi ne our world’s future.

Enjoy the stories and images in this magazine which showcase how our remarkable students already know what it means to be accountable. Th ey understand the value of seeking excellence without losing sight of the dignity of the individuals they meet along the way. Th ey celebrate success and honor those who accompany them on their journeys. Th ey recognize injustice but, more importantly, feel compelled to respond. Th eir capacity to blend faith and reason energizes the development of their individual foundations in life.

We believe this is what distinguishes Lasallian education. We are honored by our outsanding alumni and we believe in our remarkable students. We believe we prepare students for both the promise and the challenge of the future. We dedicate ourselves to prepare them for success in college and we aspire to prepare them for exceptional lives.

Blesssings,

Denise L. Jones, President

“Touching the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform; a miracle which God demands of you, for this is the purpose of your work.”

Historic Gift Supports Student Scholars

Oregon philanthropists Mark and Pam Donegan made a $2.5 million investment to provide pathways for young people to realize their full potential at La Salle Catholic College Preparatory. By supporting the school’s mission to provide access to excellent education to those who desire it, regardless of the student’s fi nancial means, the Donegan family is assuring access for many students in the future.

Th e philanthropic investment, representing the single largest gift in school history, established the Donegan Family Scholarship Fund, a legacy that will honor the Donegans’ commitment to many young people at La Salle.

“Mark and Pam have demonstrated their commitment to providing opportunities to students with limitless potential, who come from modest fi nancial means, through their partnership with La Salle Prep over the past decade. I am constantly amazed at their generosity and modesty. It has always been about the kids for them. Th is is philanthropy in its most beautiful form,” explained President Denise L. Jones.

La Salle Takes Plunge for Special Olympics

Th irty-three La Salle Prep students, teachers and family members ran into the icy Columbia River on February 11, 2012, to raise $4,434 for Special Olympics Oregon. Th e team wore red-feathered masks, red body paint and shirts that read “Put a Bird on It” in honor of the La Salle Falcon mascot.

“I am very proud of the La Salle community with the way they embraced the challenge to increase awareness about being accepting of those who have disabilities through how we act and what we say,” said La Salle’s director of service Stephanie Blumenson.

Th e team earned second place for the amount of money raised in the K-12 school division and fi rst place for the most participants in a school group. Sophomore Joslynn Bigelow raised an impressive $1,000 and freshman Jack Kain raised more than $6,500 for Special Olympics. As a Super Plunger, Kain ran in and out of the Columbia River every hour for 24 hours. He was supported by his parents, Patty and Tommy, brother Ryan, and sister Maren.

Students Respond to Childhood Poverty

As part of the annual school-wide theme, La Salle students are studying the issue of how they can break the cycle of childhood poverty. Th rough student activities, curriculum and programs, the community is responding to those in need.

For example, at Lot Whitcomb, a public elementary school near La Salle with nearly 90% of students at or below the federal poverty line, La Salle participates in the Backpack Buddies program to provide weekend food for fi ft y children. Also, beyond sponsoring families during the holidays, La Salle partners with Lot Whitcomb to provide its students with mentors for an hour each week throughout the year.

In an open letter, student leaders wrote, “La Salle has responded to the local community and is working to end the cycle of childhood poverty here in Milwaukie.” To read the entire letter, please visit the school theme page at lsprep.org.

Class of 2010 College Data Released

Th e Oregon University System (OUS) recently released college data profi ling La Salle’s 2010 graduates who entered an Oregon public university as freshmen. Th e reports, available for all Oregon high schools at www.ous.edu, indicate the promising results of La Salle’s rigorous college preparatory curriculum.

La Salle’s Vice Principal for Academics Andy Kuff ner shared his interpretation of the results. “Upon entering college as freshmen, high school grade point averages (GPAs) of La Salle graduates were about .2 points lower than the average GPA for all incoming OUS college freshmen. However, comparing the college GPAs of these same students aft er their fi rst year, La Salle graduates earned an average GPA which is .2 higher than the average for all college freshmen. Th is means that the college preparatory rigor refl ected in La Salle’s GPA translated into better success in college-level work,” he explained.
