SUMMER 2012 IN HYDE PARK AND KENSINGTON GARDENS
OVERVIEWThe Royal Parks has worked closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to prepare Hyde Park for the events of the London 2012 Games. Hyde Park will host the Olympic Triathlon on 4 and 7 August and the Olympic Marathon Swim on 9 and 10 August in The Serpentine Lake. The Park is expected to be especially busy on these days.
LONDON 2012 COMPETITION VENUEThe London 2012 Competition Venue will host both the Olympic Triathlon and Olympic 10km Marathon Swimming events in the Cockpit area of Hyde Park. This area is for ticketed spectators who can enter near Serpentine Lodge. Due to the events, Serpentine Bridge will be closed to pedestrians on 4 and 7 August. A temporary venue to host the events began construction in June and will be removed by October. The Triathlon route also travels through St James’s Park and The Green Park.
BT LONDON LIVEBT London Live, is a partnership between the Mayor of London, The Royal Parks and The London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and is located at the Parade Ground – visitors will be able to watch live sporting action on four giant screens, get involved with sport activities and enjoy live music and performances. Access is free, however a limited number of guaranteed entry tickets are available online at www.btlondonlive.com. The site is active from 28 July to 11 August. Construction of the site began in June and diversions are in place around the area, which stretches from The Bandstand to Speakers’ Corner.
AMBASSADOR PODThis information stand will be manned by London Ambassadors including The Royal Parks volunteers from 20 July until 10 September, to assist visitors with information about what’s on and how to get around.
SOCHI PARKVisitors will enjoy a taste of what’s to come at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which will be hosted in Sochi on Russia’s Black Sea coastline. The exhibition, inside Kensington Gardens, includes an indoor ice rink and performances by Russia’s top skaters. Sochi Park is open from 26 July to 12 August. More information and ticket details are available at www.russiasochipark.com
AFRICA VILLAGEThis space in Kensington Gardens will showcase the African continent and visitors will be able to experience African culture first hand through unique exhibition stands, performances and food. Entry is free and the village is open from 27 July to 12 August.
THE LONDON 2012 SHOP AT HYDE PARKOfficial London 2012 merchandise and souvenirs will be available at The London 2012 Shop at Hyde Park. The shop is open from 1 July to 16 September, 10am to 10pm and includes
venue-exclusive merchandise and limited edition Royal Parks merchandise.
THE LONDON 2012 KIOSKOfficial London 2012 merchandise and souvenirs.
SERPENTINE GALLERYAs part of London 2012 Festival, the Serpentine Gallery hosts Yoko Ono To the Light – this exhibition is free and available until 9 September. Also on display is the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012, by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei – free and open 10am to 6pm daily until 17 October.
ACCESSLiberty Drives provides free mobility for anyone who finds it difficult to access all of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. From 1 June to 30 September, Liberty Drives will be relocated to Victoria Gate. Liberty Drives will not be in operation from 25 July to 13 August.
REOPENING AND REINSTATINGThe Royal Parks works very hard to protect the parks for future generations to enjoy. Park Management has worked closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to carefully plan for the events of Summer 2012 and to ensure impact to the parks in minimised. After the Games, The Royal Parks will carry out work to return the parks to normal as quickly as possible.
VEHICLE ACCESSIn order to facilitate these major events, all Hyde Park roads and car parks will be closed to public vehicles from 25 July, reopening on 13 August. North Carriage Drive will also be closed from 22 June to 16 September. Triangle car park will be closed until October.
CYCLE ACCESSThere will be disruptions to all Hyde Park cycle routes from 1 June to September. There will be no cycle access on 4 and 7 August. A section of Serpentine Road will be closed to cyclists from 1 June until 30 September, however a diversion is in place via Policeman’s Path and Rotten Row. North Carriage Drive will be closed to cyclists from 22 June to 24 August, however a temporary cycle path will be available on the northern pavement.
PEDESTRIAN ACCESSFrom the start of June through to mid September, there will be some restrictions to pedestrian access across the Park. The main diversions include the Cockpit area on the north side of the Serpentine which will host the temporary venue for the Olympic Triathlon and Olympic Marathon Swim. Also impacted is the Parade Ground along the east side of Hyde Park which will host the BT London Live site. These sites are marked on the map above. Notably, the Serpentine Bridge will be closed on 4 and 7 August due to events.
