The garden is planted and growing with all the May rains. Shirley, a facilitator at RH, has taken the project under her wing. Peas, cabbage, broccoli and morning glories are well on their way. Seeds and Plants have been obtained from the Garden Resource Center in Lansing. Folks are excited to be able to make pesto and fresh salsa once again. Our CLS (Community Living Services) Program has been growing in leaps and bounds. Some of the outings residents and clients from the community have enjoyed are: Tulip Festival, Frederick Meijer‘s Garden, Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson and Alpaca Shear- ing. They have explored new activities in and around the greater Lansing area. Classes have included Men and Women‘s Spa Day, (taking care of your body), Etiquette in Res- taurants as well as volunteering at CACS, (Capital Area Community Services) setting up food boxes. Our residents are very much appreciative of all the assistance they have received! If you have ever been involved with ―Spring Cleaning‖ for an organization you would know that the help was a blessing! Thank you to our UPS friends. The group also assem- bled and stained picnic tables as well as the yard swings. They also turned the compost pile and added to the garden bins. Bev Schaffer, a teacher from Mason High School FCCLA (Family, Career & Community Leaders of America.) assisted 12 students in weeding and planting flowers around the grounds. Volunteer Women from Great Lakes Chris- tian College visit every third Thursday morning to socialize and play games with the residents. The Saltman family continues to visit each Monday morning engaging our residents with games, crafts, bingo, and the most importantly their on-going friendship. The residents picnicked with them on Memorial Day as well. Kirby, a goldendoodle certified Pet Therapy dog, is our newest neighbor from Holt. He and his owner; Sarah Miller Schaffer, visit every Monday evening for a belly rub and tricks . (belly rub is for Kirby!) Summer—2011 Friends of Rainbow Homes,

Events - Updates - “Pass it Forward”

On April 17, Kevin 1, Paul and Jenni-fer walked in the Race for the Cure.

On June 3, twenty-two residents and their friends attended the Blossom Time Ball at the Causeway Bay Hotel. They had dinner and danced the night away to the Sea Cruisers. Everyone enjoyed dressing up and dancing.

Kevin 1, Lynn, Mary Ellen and Kevin 3 all participated in The State Special Olympics in Mt Pleasant. Congratulations to Kevin 3 for winning a gold medal In Bowling.

New resident Mary H. moved into Rainbow Homes in May. She has lived in the Lansing area most of her life. She is grateful for the Christian atmosphere at Rainbow Homes and being able to go to church. Mary really enjoys the trips, the friends and having dinner together as a family.

Thanks to the Kids Repair Program, Rainbow Homes has it ‗s first three wheel bike. Also thanks to Pam Wilcoxen who donated a second three-wheel bike. We have a few bumps and bruises but look forward to future trail rides.

The Diamond Tour Bus is transporting the group on a special summer trip.

A group of 46 left June 21 for a 3 day trip to Northern Michigan to visit the Mackinac area. They will be sightseeing in the area, visiting the Island, taking a boat tour through the Soo Locks as well and trying their luck at the Kewadin Casino.

“Pass it Forward Event” Residents par-

ticipated in their first event at Reno‘s East

in June. Our residents decided to purchase

flowers and present them to staff at a

nursing home.

Our May Bowling FUNdraiser ―Surf‘s

Up‖ was a complete success! Resident

and their families, along with St. James

Knights of Columbus, enjoyed an

afternoon of bowling, food and making

friends! Thank you to all who attended,

donated and sponsored this event.

Auction 2012 is scheduled for

Saturday, February 4, 2012.

collect donations for the ―MR Drive‖ Our

residents collected over $300 towards helping

persons with developmental disabilities.

Wonderful job!

Thank you to Betty, Tom & Pat Barenck

for remembering RH when downsizing. Some

of the items are used for our residents and

other some will go to our ―Garage Sale‖ in July

where money collected will go towards our New

York trip.
