Nancy’s clever use of a straw mat on her layout mimics the straw hat Shailyn is wearing in the photo, adding loads of texture and interest to her beautiful layout. The colour-coordinated button details are extra nice.
A triang le of summery die cuts frame Shailyn’s darling photo, which Lynn placed on tilt for a fun and playful look. The colourful strip journaling is the perfect finishing touch!

As anyone who knows me will attest, summer
marks the much-antici-pated season where I can be found standing in water, waving a stick. I am a diehard fl y fi sherman and one of my favourite spots to wet a line is the Bow
River in Calgary, Alberta. That admission alone should make me an honourary Canadian, don’t you think?
Summer also heralds a season of gardening and Christine Middlecamp joins us to share a bit of her son’s green thumb (pg 34). What summer wouldn’t be
complete without sports? From home runs to goals, be sure to check out the 3 I’s (pg 37) for loads of ideas to scrapbook all those sports photos! What did you do on your summer vacation? Davinie Fiero has put together a wonderful brag book to host all of your vacation memories (pg 46). And fi nally, we think you’ll agree that our Reader’s Gallery (pg 51) is one of our best yet.
All of us here at Scrapbook and Cards Today wish you a safe, fun and relaxing summer.
Here’s to your next creative adventure,
Spellbinders and Bo Bunny are a great combination for this “home-decor-meets- papercrafting” piece!

i spy with emily light as a feather by EMILY PIT TS
W hen the summer heat is on, I crave all things light and airy. With the “cool” trend in tissue, fi lter and crepe paper embellishments, our
scrapbook pages can also sport a light and airy feel this season. I checked out these semi-transparent, light-as-a-feather papercrafting products and found they are much sturdier than I expected. They easily scrunched up and fl attened out, and I was able to reposition them without

With dye ink, I intensifi ed some of the layered fl owers on my layout to match the patterned papers. You’ll fi nd this new trend in many forms: full sheets, fl owers, tape, trims, and pre-made embellishments–lots of ways to lighten up your summer scrapping and make your seasonal pages a breeze!

Kimber McGrayWhen I saw the 6”x9” kraft fi le folders in this kit, I knew right away they would make a wonderful, unique mini album! I assigned a subject to each folder about my family’s vacation to Hilton Head last summer. After embellishing each section, I stacked the folders together, punched three holes in each, and bound them on key rings.
Kimber’s bracket-punched edge, resting behind her title, was a great choice to enhance the the same-shaped tabs found on the kraft fi le folders in the kit.
Nothing says “beach” like a bright, cheerful sun! Kimber’s hand-pieced rays are the highlight of her album cover, composed of strips of yellow cardstock and black pen details that really make it pop.

Sheri RegulyI loved the kraft fi le folders in this kit and thought one of them, opened and laying fl at, would make a
great neutral base for my photos and title. I used a band of the colourful striped paper across the middle of my page to provide natural direction to both my focal photos and journaling.
LisaDickinson As a fi rst-time die user, I’ll admit I was feeling a bit intimidated, but when I opened
the package and saw the nested dies I was immediately inspired to create an assortment of matted, multi-sized frames. Because the dies are open in the center, I was able to position them over my photos to see exactly where I would be cutting.

As the old saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand
words,” but to successfully convey your message on a
scrapbook page, nothing beats an eye-catching title.
Whether it is strong and bold or subtle and refi ned, your title
says a lot about your layout. It sets the mood and becomes an
invitation for the reader to stop and linger for a while. What
your title looks like is equally important as what it says. Read
on to see what creative title ideas Summer, Davinie, Marla
and Kelly have to share with you to try on your next paper
crafting project.

mixed-media titlesWe all have them—piles of orphans from opened
packages of those “I just had to have them”
alphabet collections. After we’ve squeezed the last possible
word out of each set, there lie the lonely leftovers. So what
can you do with them? Follow Summer’s “green” idea and
mix them up to create a new, eclectic title! On her layout, she
painted all of her letters the same colour for a fun and funky
title that really pops.

machine-cut titlesWith so many affordable die cutting
machines available, long gone are
the days of fussy cutting titles with a craft knife.
Today’s die cutters produce fl awless shapes,
letters and numbers cut from many types of
materials such as cardstock, transparency fi lm,
vinyl and fabric, just to name a few. Kelly die
cut her cardstock title from two cartridge fonts,
scaling one a bit larger than the other, then
neatly stacked them together.
hand-stamped titlesStamped titles are a quick and easy way to convey
a message, particularly on handmade cards. With
so many ink colours to choose from, coordinating a
sentiment with the rest of your design is a snap.
If you are unsure where you want to position your stamped title,
fi rst try stamping it on a scrap of vellum or leftover transparency.
Not only will this tip give you a chance to practice stamping your
title, but with the transparent scrap you can move the piece
around your project until you are happy with the position before
you commit to its fi nal location. Marla found this trick especially
helpful before stamping between the two bicycle tires.

computer-generated titles
objects for lettersAn object makes a great substitute
for a letter in a title. On Davinie’s
refreshing layout, she swapped out one of the
letter o’s in the word “pool” with a pretty, yellow
button that rests on a die cut sun.
There are even instances when the object
doesn’t necessarily have to match the shape of
the letter you are substituting. For example,
let’s say you are spelling the word “teacher.” You
could replace the letter “a” with an apple, and
although the apple does not look like the shape
of the letter “a,” there is no mistaking the word
you are spelling out. Here are more ideas to
substitute objects:
• A brad, gem, fl ower or other round
embellishment for the letter O
• A star, party hat, leaf or triangle for
the letter A
• The number 3 (fl ipped around) for the
letter E
• A birthday candle, ribbon, twine, trim
or decorative pin for the letter I
• A double pennant for the letter W
The next time you are stumped for a title idea,
remember these terrifi c tips and tricks. Your
next layout or card will be sure to stand up and
say, “Hey, take a look at me!” SCT
One of the many benefi ts of creating a title on your computer is
that you are guaranteed an exact colour match to your layout,
not to mention the hundreds of fonts you have to choose from! Marla mixed
two of her favourite fonts together to create a two-part title, both of which
tie into her detailed journaling.
On a separate piece of white cardstock, Marla created her computer-generated title to look like a warning sign, then crossed out the word “not” with a black marker.

photography for today’s scrapper: How Do I? When Would I? Why Should I? BY K ATHY THOMPSON LAFFOLEY
Want to ruin a potentially great
photograph? Point your camera at your
subject and tell them to say, “Cheese!”
Although there is always a place for a beautifully
composed portrait shot, it’s the candids that
usually get my heart pounding—that moment
when I know I’ve captured something special,
when I’ve truly seized the essence of my subject.
Ironically, this type of shot can also be the most
challenging to capture. Most of us are condi-
tioned from an early age to “pose” for the camera.
How many two-year-olds do you know who
suddenly develop a very cheesy grin as soon as
someone pulls out a camera? It happens to the
best of us! So what can you do to capture those
often fl eeting, but incredibly authentic moments?
A lot! Here are some tips to get you started.
Capture your best authentic, candid photo with these great tips from our shutterbug friend, Kathy.
If you know your subject well, pull something out of the memory vault
that you know will make them smile, blush or laugh.
Most subjects aren’t comfortable with a camera pointed at them from
close proximity, so use that zoom lens and try to become invisible
(this includes turning off your fl ash).

As your subjects relax a bit and hopefully forget that the camera is there,
shoot in continuous or burst mode and before long you’ll be capturing the
subtleties of the interactions of your subjects.
Most people don’t like looking into the camera—it makes them feel self-
conscious. Shooting somewhere busy and allowing your subject to get lost
in what’s going on around them can help them forget that they’re having
their photo taken.
Tips For Kids
The best candid shots are often captured when kids move past the mystique of the camera and forget about it. Get down on their level and talk to them, show them the camera, even let them take a shot or two, which is usually a huge hit.
Most children can’t resist a really funny joke or simple silliness. Calling them by the wrong name (especially that of a sibling) usually elicits a wonderful response!
Keep the chit chat going as you move into position, then casually start taking photos, all the while keeping the conversation moving and the reactions coming.
For more great photo tips, inspiration and a few grins, visit Kathy’s blog at www.kathythompsonlaffoley.typepad.com
3
Finally, take your time. If you’re
rushed, your subjects will sense
it. You want them feeling natural,
relaxed and happy so that you have
the opportunity to capture events as they unfold. I haven’t
come across many subjects beyond the age of six who love
having their photo taken, so invest your time in the shoot
and you’ll walk away with priceless and fl eeting moments
that the camera has captured forever!
Another tip is to tell one member of the group that you’re shooting them,
allowing for the other members to relax, all the while continuing to shoot
the group. Can you tell which two didn’t think they were having their
picture taken?
Once your subjects are relaxed
and interacting with one
another, casually circle
the group and change your
shooting angle.

easy, detailed, expert Whatever level of diffi culty appeals to you, our easy, detailed, expert column has fantastic elements to try today!
At the heart of our family, there is a popular summer activity that is greatly enjoyed and tried each and every year—gardening. The person to manage it all is usually my father, and to help with his lofty gardening goals, he initiates the help of my
son, Ethan. When he does, I’m there to take a photo or two! I love watching the two of them share in our family’s long standing summer tradition of gardening.

For my easy layout, I decided to make the center area of the page the focal point. I was able to do this by using a neutral coloured background and then keeping most of my papers and embellishments within the confi nes of a large, rectangular area. Small areas like this are very easy to embellish. I fi rst applied a contrasting selection of warm and cool patterned papers. From there, I located a central spot for two chipboard embellishments that I layered individually before applying them to the layout. Finally, a duo-font title was added, along with a handwritten journaling spot.

For my expert layout, colour and details prevail. I balanced a strong yellow background with its counterpart, a soft blue. For high contrast, I placed my photos in the yellow area, with my embellishments drifting along the bottom third of the page. I created mixed-media fl owers from similar materials and colours to maintain continuity, then positioned them to the left and right of a large chipboard frame that houses smaller detailed embellishments, including a journaling card, rub-ons and word stickers.

For my detailed layout, I stayed with the same light coloured background, but expanded the layout’s overall design area with a sunny border of yellow checked paper. Contained within it is a classic style fl oral pattern in an inviting, warm hue of grey. A triadic arrangement of petite, clustered embellishments frame my photos, which are divided by a strip of handwritten journaling. A pre-printed transparency pitch hits for a portion of my title, positioned on its side to the right of my main photo.

Whether you scrapbook your photos two at a time or
load up a double-page with ten of your favourite
shots, multi-photo layouts are the most effi cient
and practical way to move your memories from your camera
to your albums. While single-photo layouts are fun to design,
the creative possibilities do not diminish with the addition of
more photos. Read on and see what creative strategies Vicki,
Kelly and Summer employ when they design multi-photo
pages and give these pointers a try yourself!

Like the tail of a comet, the spray of die cut stars shooting out of Vicki’s title is the quintessential embellishment for this all-star page!
choose a “hero” photoWhen Vicki began designing this double-page layout
about her daughter’s experience playing soccer,
she had an abundance of great photos from which to choose.
From fantastic action photos, to posed portraits, to a handful of
wonderful candid shots, large assortments of photos like these can
often be overwhelming, leaving even the most seasoned scrapbooker
wondering, “Which photos should I scrap?” Here’s a great tip from
Vicki to help you pare down a looming pile of pictures.
“When I have more photos than I can possibly fi t on a layout, I start
by choosing my most favourite of the bunch. I call this photo my
‘hero,’ the one shot that, for me, stands out from all the rest—the
one that makes me smile and brings back all the memories of that
day,” Vicki says. “I zoom in, crop, and print the hero as the largest
photo on my page. After choosing the rest of the photos for my
page, I print them smaller and frame them around the hero. These
smaller photos are kind of like a supporting cast for my journaling
and help to emphasize the story of my page.”

ready and “action!”When you are lucky enough to
capture that perfect shot—the one
where time stands still—there is no doubt you
will want that photo to shine on your layout.
Kelly scored a touchdown in that department,
capturing not one, but two great shots of her
young son in fl awless gridiron form. For these
fantastic photos to take center stage on her
layout, she chose tight, geometric patterns
in colours and tones that complimented her
photos, but did not overwhelm them. Kelly
kept her embellishments small and clustered
together in a classic triadic arrangement.
Kelly also integrated a bold, one-word title into
her journaling, which she capped off, top and
bottom, with die cut brackets. A subtle, yet
confi dent, title like this is a perfect choice to
reinforce an impressive pair of photographs.
2
colour up!As scrapbookers, it is often our inclination to choose papers
and embellishments that perfectly match our photos. But in
doing so, we risk those photos getting lost in a sea of matching colours.
Kelly chose a complimentary palette of warm, lighter hues of those found
in her photos and the sequential shots of her adorable son instantly become
the focus of this well-designed page!
3
To pitch hit for her journaling , Kelly took advantage of a pre-printed die cut and typed the highlights of her son’s t-ball season in a “Top 10” list.
For a fun twist on the ever-popular pennant banner, Kelly trimmed die cut circles in half and added pen details around the perimeter curve.

all types of pages and projects, but the
pennant-style title streamer that rests on the top, left

Fifteen photos, a trio of artists and three very unique results! BY BECKY FLECK
Multi-photo pages are probably the most popular among scrapbookers and often the
hardest to create. Why? Because it can be challenging to place a multitude of photos on a page, leave enough room for embellishing, and still create a layout where all of the elements aren’t competing for attention. Read on and see how Kimber, Sarah and Krissy tackle this conundrum and create three distinctive layouts where photos and embellishments harmonize and the layout takes center stage.

Kimber’s sketchBy maintaining the size of her subjects to roughly the same scale in each photo, Kimber had no competition issues when including eight (yes, eight!) photos on her single page layout. With so many photos, this sketch is ideal for more petite embellishments like the fun ones she used on her page.
A fresh summer palette of papers and embellish-ments were the perfect choice for Kimber’s poolside pics!

I love creating mini albums! They come together quickly
and I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I’ve
completed one. For my vacation album, I chose this kraft
brag book made by Fancy Pants. It measures 7”x9” and
includes 50 scrapping/journaling pages, 15 photo sleeves,
and 15 pocket pages. I really liked how I was able to mix
and match the different types of pages and use just what I
needed to create my own customized album.
The journal pages were pre-printed with beautiful corner
fl ourishes and notebook style lines, making my hand-
written journaling a breeze. I added a few die cuts, ribbon,
buttons and sewing details for added dimension.
The photo sleeves were perfect for all of my 4”x6” photos
and this album holds a total of 60 of them. The pocket pages
not only store memorabilia, but can be used to tuck away
additional photos, too.

from the heart
The heart of scrapbooking is to record the events and history of your life. By default, this makes you your family’s chief historian. Documenting the who, what, where, when and why doesn’t have to be a tedious chore or a statement of the obvious. In fact, the people
who will be reading your journaling in the future likely weren’t there with you, so take time to paint a vivid, interesting story and invite them along to relive the memory.
How Did You Feel?
There is no mistaking that Nic’s beautiful layout is about a wedding, and a stunning seaside wedding at that. But one read of her journaling and you will see that she describes, in heartfelt detail, exactly how she felt the day her little brother was married. From her daughter participating as a fl ower girl, to her son reciting a prayer, Nic shares intimate, emotional details that might not otherwise be evident from looking at the page. She even included a brief conversation softly whispered be-tween her and her husband.
When you scrapbook an event, here are a few prompts to consider as you write your journaling:
❧ What sounds did you hear and scents did you smell that the photos cannot convey?
❧ What was the weather like?
❧ Why this location? Describe it in detail.
The memories you scrapbook are your eyes, your ears and your voice. They will tell your story for years to come.

Could Kristine’s little girl “bee” any cuter? On a swirly background of sunny yellow, this cheerful layout, based on a PageMaps sketch, is brimming with details and a perfectly positioned bumble bee embellishment.

hitchedby JEAN MANISsupplies CARDSTOCK, Bazzill Basics, American Crafts; PATTERNED PAPER, October Afternoon; LETTER STICKERS, American Crafts, Cosmo Cricket; CHIPBOARD, Sassafras; FABRIC FLOWERS, BasicGrey; BORDER PUNCH, Fiskars; ADHESIVE, Scrapbook Adhesives
Jean’s wedding photos, converted to black and white, stand out against the soft, warm hues of her colour palette. The contrast is dramatic and afforded her the opportunity to use large, layered floral embellishments to frame the corners of her page.
full on giggle pussby SARAH WEBBsupplies CARDSTOCK, Bazzill Basics; PATTERNED PAPER, BasicGrey; LETTER STICKERS, BasicGrey, Cosmo Cricket; TAG, FRAME, My Mind’s Eye; BUTTERFLY, FLOWERS, Cosmo Cricket; RESIN FLOWER, Prima; GEMS, Zva; PAPER PUNCHES, Fiskars, EK Success; ADHESIVE, Thermo-Web
Nothing is more delightful than when a child bursts into a fit of gigg les, and Sarah captured the essence of her daughter’s amusement perfectly on this playful, lighthearted page. Clusters of small embellishments adorn the layout, but the focus stays on Sarah’s wonderful photos.

There is such a soft, romantic quality to fabric and I love to include it on my paper
crafting projects. This textile is lightweight, very pliable and makes a terrifi c
substitute for paper. On my layout, I used fabric for the light blue background and
the die cut clouds that rest on top of it. I also cut fabric into narrow strips with pinking
shears and gathered them with a loose running stitch to form layered posies. I crowned
each fl ower with a decorative brad and tucked small fabric leaves behind the folds. Just
like with paper, the creative possibilities with fabric are truly endless!
