A tribute to our 2009-2010 President Donna White
almost twenty years ago as a student at converse college i met donnawhite–someonewithacontagioussmileandlaughterthancanbrightenanyroom.ihavebeenluckyenoughtocalldonnamyfriendsincethen,butineverimaginedthatwewouldhaveembarkedonthisfantastic“onceinalifetime”journeytogether.
iknewfromthefirstphonecalldonnaandihadafterbeingaskedtobecomeyourPresident-elect,thatweweregoingtohaveagreatyear!Phonecalls,meetings,travelsandlunchdatesconsistedofsomanyplansforthisJuniorleagueyear.onethingthatwewerefacedwithwaschange…..notbecausewe wanted to change things that had been done before us, but changebecause our membership has changed and we knew that we needed tochangewiththemfortheJuniorleagueofspartanburg’sfuturetobeasrichasourpast.
so,theyearbeganwithchange…thechangetoholdmeetingsatlocationsforlittletonocost.todate,only$651.00hasbeenspentonsiterentalforgeneralmembershipmeetings–thatis$2,349.00underbudget.thataloneisamazing!shealsostarteda“momentformission”ateachgmm.thisyearwehelpedandlearnedmoreaboutsPhin,broughtschoolsuppliesforthecharterschool,collectedmoneyforricebowlsandcombatedchildhoodobesitywithKidsintheKitchen.weadoptedcommunityimpactthisyeartoprovidemoreflexibilitytoourleaguemembersaswellasimpactingourcommunityonalargerlevelbyhelpingmoreorganizationsthanever.

Prina taylor, a member of Junior league of spartanburg, was the director of thecinderellaProjectthisyear.itwasafantasticeventandallthegirlsfoundtheirperfectdress.theyoungergirlswerestillaware,however,of the fact thatbrittney’sdresswas“special”because itwasbrandnewand theyallenviedherforit.that’sexactlyhowitshouldbewhenyou’reasenior,right?alittlebitofrespectfromtheunderclassmen?brittneywaseatingitup.ilovedseeingthetwinkleinhereyeastheyallwatchedherturntoshowoffherdazzlingnewbeadedgown.thiswashertimetoshine.andshedid!
our Prom night plans were being planned out as we, the anchor house committee, realized that they allwantedtheirnailsdone(artificialfingernailsand/ormanicures&pedicures).inanefforttomakesuretheyallfeltglamorous,severalofourcommitteemembers,Kellicaldwell,giniredmancomer,annacollinsandlisaPappas,eachagreedto“sponsor”adifferentgirlforProm.someofusagreedtohelppayfornailsordinneronPromnightandsomeweregenerousenoughtodoboth.westillneededhelpwithonegirls’dinner.amandaingrammathis,whoisnotonouranchorhousecommittee,wasgraciousenoughtoacceptthis invitation.-(thankyou,amanda!)-
PriortoPromnighttheparticipantsandtheirsponsorsscheduledtimetogethertogogettheir“nailsdid”.Kellisaidthatlele(aKaleandra)andJanaelookedsoelegantwiththeirfrenchmanicuresandpedicures.ginisaidthatbrittneychoseapolishthatmatchedherdress.itmadethemfeelsofeminineandprettytohavemanicuresandpedicures.unbelievably,eventhoughshewasdealingwiththedeathofherbeloveddaughter,brooke,lisaPappasmadesurethatJanae,theresidentshewassponsoring,wastakencareofandverifiedsheintendedtokeepherpromisetocoverherexpenses.
beforeweknewit,Promnighthadarrived.ishowedupattheanchorhousejustintimetohelpwithsomefinishingtouches.allofthegirlslookedstunning.summerworeatealdress.Janaehadonagoldgown.leledonnedcoral.andbrittneysuitedherorange.throughthedownpouroutside,Kellicaldwellanditookthegirlstocornbreadtocaviar,inspartanburg,fordinner.wehadtobesocarefulnottolettheirhairanddressesgetwet.iwassurprisedwedidnothaveany“horn-honkers”aroundus.amandaandherhusband,lenny,metusthere.wehadsuchawonderfulmeal.thegirlsdrankfruitymocktailsandorderedanythingandeverythingthattheywanted.weweresharingappetizersandsidessoeveryonewouldhaveanopportunitytotastethescrumptiouscuisine.everythingwasdelicious.ilovedthepersonalitieswegottoseefromthegirlswhentheywereawayfromhome(aKatheshelter).ourtablewasfullofconversationsandlaughterallevening.thegirlssaidtheycouldn’tfinishtheirfoodbecausetheyweresofullintheirtightdresses.theythoughtaseammightbustopen.but,weordereddessertanyway.Kelli&iofferedtotaketheirdoggiebags(boxes)backtotheanchorhouse.weknewthegirlswouldbesohungrywhentheycameinfromalongnightofdancing&socializing.
when we finally got up from our enjoyable meal, again through the rain showers, we rushed to meet theirphotographer,myhusband,JamesFinch,atthemarriott,wheretheywerehavingtheProm.wemadesuretogetwhateverpicturesthegirlswanted.theyalwaysenjoyposingandstruttinginfrontofthecamera.itbringsoutadifferentsideofthegirlsthatwesorarelygettosee.somethingabouttheclickingshutterandstrobeoftheflashmakesthemsoselfconfidentandassured.
afterhavingsuchafabuloustime,itwassohardtopassouthugsandsay,“goodbye!becareful!havealovelytime!”,astheyenteredtheirPromwithsmiles.tearswelledupinKelli’sandmyeyes,asthegirlsturnedtowaveandblowkissesinourdirection.asournightwasending,theirswasjustbeginning.
