Summer 2008 full of scrapbook-worthy momentsWelcome to the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s first-ever Summer Program Guide. During the council realignment process, we promised you expanded and enhanced summer experiences throughout the state, and we are delivering on those promises in a big way. This comprehensive guide gives details about the best camps and programs we have to offer girls in the 80 counties that now make up the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. This summer, we invite our 16,000 Girl Scouts to do

what they do best – explore and learn. Since every program and camp on every page is open to every Girl Scout, this is the perfect time for girls of all ages to go to a new place or try a new activity. Our goal is to create a summer’s worth of memories and personal growth experiences that will not only fill thousands of scrapbooks but further strengthen the bond between Girl Scouts in all parts of Kansas. It will be an unforgettable Girl Scout summer.

Sincerely,

Shelly ChenowethCEO

Why is summer camp important? Children at summer camps learn vital life skills that put them on a journey to increased self-confidence and self-reliance. Their lives are made much healthier and happier by what they learn at camp. The best-kept secret in American education is that great camps have been teaching emotional intelligence since they began. Emotional intelligence has much to do with how children grow and succeed – self-awareness, self-control, empathy, the ability to wait, the ability to listen, cooperate, share and work well with others. Children can find adult friends at camp who model perseverance, listening, teamwork and appreciation of differences. This motivates them to set new and high standards for their own behavior. When young people feel appreciated and valued by these friends, they are more sure of their ability to live happily away from home.

Can I Bring a Friend?YES! We welcome new girls into our summer programs and have made an effort to streamline the process for them to register fast and easy. (Contact the Membership Department in your area, information is located on the inside front cover.)

The cost for a new girl to register to be a Girl Scout is $10. The membership dues go to the national organization and make her a member of Girl Scouts through Sept. 30, 2008.

No standard registration forms required — simply fill out the designated camp registration form and mark “Girl Scout Membership” and “check enclosed” when submitting the form. Also attach the registration fee for choice of camp.

Why register now?Girls can get acclimated to the culture, meet new friends, earn Girl Scout awards and they get a jump start on the fall!

Benefits of Girl ScoutingThe mission of Girl Scouting is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Our ultimate goal is to help girls find the best in themselves in skill building and behavior with their peers. There is no better place to achieve that goal than through our summer programs that are open to every Girl Scout of every age.

Our program puts girls on the path to success by encouraging them to take part in activities centered around Girl Scouts’ three keys to leadership: Discover, Connect, Take Action.

As they “Discover,” girls:Understand their values and their world; are clear about who they are and what they stand for; take part in new experiences and learn new skills for their own personal growth.

When they “Connect” with those around them, they:Care about, inspire and team with others and develop confidence to advocate for themselves and motivate others, build teams and solve problems.

When they “Take Action,” girls are:Applying their increased self-awareness and strong leadership skills to identify issues they really care about and do something to make a difference.

2008 Table of Contents A Note to Parents about Safety

Girl Scouts take safety seriously. In an effort to assure you of your daughter’s safety and well-being, we want to take a moment to explain how we hire and choose our paid seasonal staff.

The Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland hiresadult seasonal staff to fill specific job responsibilities (camp directors, waterfront, program activities, unit counselors, etc.) for the delivery of summer program. Only adults ages 18 or older may directly supervise campers. All seasonal staff applicants must complete a written application with three character/skill references attached. All references are checked, a personal interview with the site director is conducted and the applicant undergoes a Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and DMV (motor vehicle) background check. In addition, supervisors regularly monitor the performance of seasonal staff members. Since Starwoods Outdoor Center is an American Camp Association-accredited site, a range of skills are also verified during the 40 hours of onsite training to ensure that the seasonal staff members can provide quality program delivery and a safe environment for each child placed under their care and/or supervision.

Dear Friend: It was such a lovely day. After chores were done Mother and I walked to the crick to gather flowers to place at the dinner table. We had a very nice dinner of rabbit that Papa trapped, potatoes and carrots fresh from our garden. I am very excited about school. We just received a shipment of five new readers from a Mission Barrel and teacher will allow each of us to read from them soon. I hope I do well in front of the class.

The patterns for costumes are available for checkout from the Wichita Girl Scout Center. For more information, contact Mary Wilson at [email protected]. Girls who find it difficult to make their own costume may rent a full costume from those available in our inventory on a first-reserved, first-served basis, but must provide their own long black socks and ankle high black shoes. There is an additional $20 fee when renting a costume. You must complete the costume rental form found in the attached registration forms and attach a separate check (or cookie credits) to the costume rental form. Girls and adults participating in this unique educational opportunity are dressed in period costumes and “act” as historical characters. Counselor-In-Training (CIT)A counselor-in-training (CIT) is a Senior Girl Scout who participates in a successful leadership program directed toward her future in camp counseling, teaching or other human resources fields. Camp Wah-Shah-She is proud to offer this program and looks forward to working with experienced campers. Based upon the resources of GSUSA, the Leadership Project is completed over a two summer period. It offers experience in staff responsibilities, pro-gram goals, contemporary issues, leadership styles, child development, group dynamics and conflict resolution. This experience is expanded upon during the second summer through skill specialization, safety practices and actu-ally leading activities. The CIT II project features specialized training in rowing, canoeing, sailing, low ropes course, small craft safety, pool safety and archery for assistant instructor certification. Along the way there will be lots of camp memories, laughs, beautiful campfires, and lifelong friendships. As further progression, CITs who success-fully complete the program may apply to work at the camp as an apprentice counselor.
