Blueprints Summer 2007

Anne Katona’s new position with the AKC has required her to resign as editor of the KBT Breed Column published in the Gazette. The USKBTC Board has appointed Carol Kearney as the new editor. It’s Carol’s intent to write columns and invite knowledgeable Kerry Blue Terrier breeders to submit columns as guest authors. Thank you, Carol for assuming this responsibility.

PEDIGREE® has allocated a portion of the money raised in their adoption drive to breed rescue organiza-tions affiliated with the 156 recognized breeds. The USKBTC Board voted to accept Pedigrees’ generous offer of a $2000 donation based on their letter of 5/15/07 on behalf of USKBTC-Charitable Funds to sup-port breed rescue. PEDIGREE®, DOES NOT support CA AB1634. This offer is NOT tied to AHA, and there are no strings attached re advertising, endorsements or promotion. The USKBTC recently made a contribution to support the legal fight against the restrictive, unconstitutional laws impacting breeders in Louisville, KY. Hopefully, these statutes will be overturned. USKBTC mem-bers in California have also been in the forefront of the fight against AB1634. On behalf of the USKBTC I have written letters to elected official consultants and committees both in the California house and senate. Copies were sent to Pet Pac & Save Our Dogs to be included in their presentations in opposition to CA AB1634. I had the opportunity to attend two chapter club Specialties recently, Pittsburgh and Southern California. The highlight of the Pittsburgh show for me was being able to recognize Blake Hansen for his Junior Han-dling achievements in ’06. The second major event at Pittsburgh was the Costume Show (handler and dog) at which Ruth Ann Reilly serves as “Mistress of Ceremonies” and tortures not only the poor “judge” (me this year) but also the contestants! What a hoot!! You have to see this to believe it! This is a good location and the club put on an outstanding show thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Kudo’s to the KBTC of Southern California for their Specialty held in conjunction with the Great Western. The event, held at California State University, Long Beach, was on Bermuda grass and ground so smooth it’s utilized for athletic events. The KBTCSC officers, board members and everyone connected with the event worked hard and can be proud of the results. There were USKBTC members in attendance from every region of the U.S. and Western Canada and we had a wonderful time. Since this was the location for the USKBTC Traveling Specialty, a board meeting was held which started at 6:00pm and ended at 11:00pm. I’m proud to report we had 11 governors in attendance, all at their own expense. Unfortunately, for the first time in 10 years we were unable to attend the KBTC of Chicago (where we are members) Specialty. Based on conversations, they had an outstanding show with a strong entry. The KBTCC is already planning for their 75th anniversary shows next year. Last, but certainly not least, Gerry Yeager and John Garahan have graciously agreed to man the “Meet The Breeds” table for the USKBTC on Responsible Dog Ownership Day in NYC, Madison Square Park on September 15th. Hope to see everyone at Montgomery and the Futurity! We are planning for micro chipping and DNA test-ing at the Futurity which will again be held at Hatboro on Saturday. Dr. Kellogg is exploring the possibility of a seminar on Thursday afternoon (around 4:00pm) at Hatboro. Denise Benincase is chairing the Futuri-ty this year and welcomes volunteers. The boutique and cookout will again be part of the Futurity. The dinner and raffle will be held at Fisher’s Tudor House following the annual membership meeting Friday, October 5. VOLUNTEERS FOR ANY AND ALL OF THESE EVENTS ARE WELCOME! See you in October! Tom

Blueprints Summer 2007

A Letter from the Editor… Summertime...and many of us are attending the numerous all breed and spe-cialty shows in our respective areas with our very best four-legged friends. While many compete only in the conformation ring, more are venturing into an assortment of performance events. We now have a herding titled Kerry, and hopefully more will soon follow. It’s terrific to know that our incredibly versatile breed can still perform one of the jobs it was originally bred to do and be recog-nized for it! This edition of Blueprints is filled with a variety of articles: updates from Res-cue, an article from the Health and Genetics committee, and a training article are just a few of the highlights in addition to OFA updates and new title holders. As always, we also have results of our recent chapter club specialties and news of upcoming events. And don’t forget to check out the Gallery of Winners, and the numerous ads scattered throughout this issue. I want to take this opportunity to encourage all of you to participate in the vari-ous AKC® Responsible Dog Ownership Days that will be held in September. In light of continuing restrictive dog legislation proposed all around the country and the more recent high profile case involving charges of dog fighting, I believe it’s in our best interest to showcase our companions in a positive and community friendly manner. Each of us can certainly be ambassadors not just for the Kerry blue terrier, but for responsible dog ownership in general. Regard-less of our specific areas of interest, we’re all in this together and must get in-volved in whatever meaningful way we can. Finally, please remember this is your newsletter. Don’t hesitate to let us know what you’re doing with your Kerry, or to suggest articles for future issues. Until next time, enjoy every day with your Kerries! Janie MacBryde [email protected]

Blake Hansen Junior Handler Par Excellence!

It was my privilege to present an award to Blake Hansen at the KBTC of Pitts-burgh Specialty in recognition of his achievements in Junior Handling. Blake was the num-ber 1 KBT Junior Handler in 2006. Blake’s current statistics through 5/31/07 are #2 in Terriers, #2 in Open Intermedi-ate (his age group) and #8 in the coun-try all-breed. Blake has received 25 First Places and 22 Best Juniors. In Junior Showmanship, it is all about presenting your dog to the best of its’ standard. Blake is very passionate about KBT’s and has always had a special rap-

port with dogs. His first dog “Atlas” dis-liked showing and Blake had to work very hard with him, which helped sharpen his skills. His novice judge

told him “If you’re this good with a dog that doesn’t want to be in the ring, I can

imagine how good you’ll be with a dog that does want to show!” Judy Agnew introduced Blake to “Charm”, his second Kerry and not only did Blake participate in Junior Handling, but exhibited Charm to her conformation championship. Judy and Blake’s mother, Eva and her husband Mark deserve considerable credit for en-couraging and supporting this outstand-ing young man’s interest in Kerry Blue Terriers and competition. Blake has al-ready qualified for both Eukanuba and Westminster this year. In addition Blake is an Honor Student and this past year received recognition awards and certificates for his academic accomplishments. Blake is interested in a career in veterinary medicine, intends to continue in conformation and hopes to

judge shows. What a Year and what a Team Blake and Charm; They make All Kerry folks’ proud! Tom Rogers

Blueprints Summer 2007

Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive

scores; a title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor the dog, an ultimate memorial.

It will remain in the record and in the memory, for about as long as anything in this world can remain.

And though the dog himself doesn't know or care that his achievements have been noted, a

title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.

A title says your dog was intelligent, adaptable, and good natured.

It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed.

In addition, a title says that you love your dog. That you loved to spend time with him because he was a good dog and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another

chance when he failed and in the end your faith was justified.

A title proves that your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so few; that in a world of disposable creatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly

in return.

And when that dear short life is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend. Volumes of praise in one small set of initials after the

name.

An obedience title is nothing less than true love and respect, given and received and recorded permanently.

Blueprints Summer 2007

Our national rescue has been relatively quiet in re-cent months, for several reasons. Our breed’s pop-ularity with puppy mills and other unscrupulous indi-viduals who are only interested in breeding dogs for the pet market appears to be dramatically declining, the happy result being that responsible breeders are producing a larger percentage of the Kerries being sold. And truly responsible breeders, which most of our Club members are, do a much better job not on-ly screening homes and providing mentoring to new owners, but in taking back their dogs if their owners can no longer keep them. The Chapter Clubs, and caring individuals in parts of the country where there are no Chapter Clubs, are doing a fantastic job of taking care of shelter dogs and owner-relinquishments in their areas. Handling rescues on a local level is not only more efficient, but allows for better placements and follow-up.

A large reason for the decrease in the number of Kerries being handled by Rescue is the USKBTC’s decision in February of 2006 to stop purchasing Ker-ry Blue Terriers from puppy mills, pet stores, or their breeders (this ban on paying money does not in-clude legitimate shelter or veterinary fees). Up until then, the Club had been trying to take a “middle of the road” approach to helping these dogs—buying them only when we could get them for below-market prices. However, the AKC’s policy statement against this practice, combined with several inci-dents where our interest in obtaining them was used to bid up the prices of auction dogs, sometimes by pitting us against other rescue groups, finally con-vinced us to stop paying any amount for them. In spite of some claims that the USKBTC is elitist, in-terested only in helping dogs bred by its own mem-bers, or with champion studded pedigrees, we will continue to take any Kerry Blue Terrier that needs our help, regardless of looks or pedigree...we just won’t pay for the privilege! And while none of us are happy about walking away from these dogs, there is evidence that removing the USKBTC as a second-ary market for mill dogs is partially responsible for the decline in the number of these dogs that are be-ing bred.

One particularly notable non-rescue that happened recently involved a woman who decided that her two older Kerries, a dog and a bitch, were too much for her to handle, and she was ready to relinquish both of them to Rescue. Fortunately, both dogs had been bred by Club members, and it took only a cou-

ple of phone calls to let them know what was going on and take care of the matter. The owner ended up giving up just one of her dogs; the breeder not only drove out to meet the owner to get her dog back, but continued to follow up to make sure that the owner was okay with the remaining dog. I love these kinds of stories!

Special thanks are in order to Gigi Reiling and Sue Gastrock for both taking in young male Kerries this past spring, fostering them, and placing them in their local areas. Interestingly, the two dogs were loosely connected in that we initially believed that one might be a dog that was stolen from its family on New Year’s Eve, and this same family ended up adopting the second dog! The only thing in my opinion that would make this ending any better is if the family’s original Kerry is discovered safe and happy.

And a huge thank you to Scott Kellogg for fostering a young male Kerry whose family is struggling to get back on its feet. There is no provision for this type of situation in our Rescue policy, but on the advice of some other breed rescue volunteers, I put a limit on how long we would keep the dog before the fami-ly either has to take him back or relinquish him for adoption. We are optimistic that it will be the former! Thanks too to Mary McGreevy for making all the ar-rangements with the family’s case worker and Scott, and for transporting the dog from the kennel the family had left him at to Scott’s.

The need for Rescue never ends—as I am writing this I have one, and possibly two dogs who will be coming into Rescue for fostering and placement in the next few weeks. Foster homes are always needed, as are Club members who are willing to transport dogs, groom, and perform home visits (both the initial checks and follow-up). And of course we always need money! The amount of money we request that a family donate when they adopt a Kerry is based on the age and overall adopt-ability of the dog, and often does not cover all the dog’s expenses. Of the rescues I have been in-volved with since last fall, the adoption donation cov-ered all the expenses on just two of them; the re-mainder cost Rescue between $100 and $500 each, mostly for routine veterinary care (e.g., exams, shots, neutering, dental). So please consider mak-ing a tax-deductible donation to Charitable Funds for Rescue. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate the need for rescue through responsible breeding and public education, and put ourselves out of business, but until that happens we still need that safety net!

Blueprints Summer 2007

From Health and Genetics... The following article has been submitted by the Infor-mation Services Committee of Health and Genetics. It was written by a nationally known veterinary dentist, Fraser A. Hale, DVM,FAVD, Dipl AVDC, and was pub-lished in “Cusp.” It is reprinted here with his permis-sion.

AVDC Position Statement on Non-Professional Dental Scaling Companion Animal Dental Scaling Without Anesthesia In the United States and Canada, only licensed vet-erinarians can practice veterinary medicine. Veteri-nary medicine includes veterinary surgery, medicine and dentistry. Anyone providing dental services oth-er than a licensed veterinarian, or a supervised and trained veterinary technician, is practicing veterinary medicine without a license and shall be subject to criminal charges. This position statement addresses dental scaling procedures performed on pets without anesthesia, often by individuals untrained in veteri-nary dental techniques. Although the term “Anesthesia-Free Dentistry” has been used in this context, AVDC prefers to use the more accurate term Non-Professional Dental Scaling (NPDS) to describe this combination. Owners of pets naturally are concerned when anes-thesia is required for their pet. However, performing NPDS on an unanesthetized pet is inappropriate for the following reasons:

1. Dental tartar is firmly adhered to the sur-face of the teeth. Scaling to remove tartar is accomplished using ultrasonic and sonic power scalers, plus hand instruments that must have a sharp working edge to be used effectively. Even slight head movement by the patient could result in injury to the oral tissues of the patient, and the operator may be bitten when the patient reacts. 2. Professional dental scaling includes scal-ing the surfaces of the teeth both above and below the gingival margin (gum line), fol-lowed by dental polishing. The most critical

part of a dental scaling procedure is scaling the tooth surfaces that are within the gingival pocket (the subgingival space between the gum and the root), where periodontal dis-ease is active. Because the patient cooper-ates, dental scaling of human teeth performed by a professional trained in the procedures can be completed successfully without anesthesia. However, access to the subgingival area of every tooth is impossible in an unanesthetized canine or feline patient. Removal of dental tartar on the visible sur-faces of the teeth has little effect on a pet’s health, and provides a false sense of accom-plishment. The effect is purely cosmetic. 3. Inhalation anesthesia using a cuffed endo-tracheal tube provides three important advantages – the cooperation of the patient with a procedure it does not understand, elimination of pain resulting from examina-tion and treatment of affected dental tissues during the procedure, and protection of the airway and lungs from accidental aspiration. 4. A complete oral examination, which is an important part of a professional dental scal-ing procedure, is not possible in an unanes-thetized patient. The surfaces of the teeth facing the tongue cannot be examined, and areas of disease and discomfort are likely to be missed.

Safe use of an anesthetic or sedative in a dog or cat requires evaluation of the general health and size of the patient to determine the appropriate drug and dose, and continual monitoring of the patient. Veteri-narians are trained in all of these procedures. Pre-scribing or administering anesthetic or sedative drugs by a non-veterinarian can be very dangerous, and is illegal. Although anesthesia will never be 100% risk-free, modern anesthetic and pa-tient evaluation techniques used in veterinary hospi-tals minimize the risks, and millions of dental scaling procedures are safely performed each year in veteri-nary hospitals. To minimize the need for professional dental scaling procedures and to maintain optimal oral health, the AVDC recommends daily dental home care from an early age. This should include brushing or use of other effective techniques to re-tard accumulation of dental plaque, such as dental diets and chew materials. This, combined with peri-

My Two-Cents

NPDS = Fraud + Theft + Malpractice+ Animal abuse + Rotten PR. Regardless of who provides the NPDS, it is wrong. It is wrong for a groomer to do it. It is wrong for a breeder to do it. It is wrong for an owner to do it on their own pets (even if they are a registered dental hygienist – they should know better). It is very very wrong for any employee of a veterinary facility to offer this service and it is even more wrong to ac-cept payment for such harmful treatment. When of-fered within the context of a veterinary facility, even if it is at the grooming centre next door, the client has a right to assume that the treatment is safe and medically beneficial. Since NPDS is neither, it is wholly inappropriate to offer it. The only safe way to do a thorough dental examina-tion and to provide therapeutically beneficial dental treatment is with the animal under a surgical plane of general anesthesia with a properly fitted, cuffed endotracheal tube in place. If the owners do not con-sent to this, leave the teeth dirty and the breath stinky. Eventually, they will get the message and let you do the right thing. If you pander to their fear of anesthesia and chip the gunk off the crowns (while leaving it behind below the gum line), you are guilty of malpractice. Remember there are some patients we cannot help, but there are none we cannot harm. It is better to do nothing than to do the wrong thing.

This greyhound was the victim of NPDSs for several years. The top photo is pre-op and the bottom one is after I chipped away the big chunks. When he was finally referred for periodontal treatment, I had to extract 34 out of 42 teeth due to end-stage periodontal disease. The good news is that he was soon feeling better than he had in years. The bad news is that he had suffered needlessly all those years. This was not the owner’s fault. They thought they were doing the best thing for their dog because his teeth were being “cleaned” regular-ly. That is why I say this is fraud.

A Rescue Pedigree

For the want of a nail, the shoe was lost; for the want of a shoe the horse was lost; and for the want of a horse the rider was lost, being overtaken and slain by the enemy, all for the want of care about a horseshoe nail. –Benjamin Franklin

The USKBTC is fortunate that the vast majority of its breeders are responsible; they try their best to place the puppies they produce into loving, responsible homes and will take a dog back, in fact insist on taking the dog back, if things do not work out. Because of this level of personal responsibility we rarely see dogs bred by Club members in Rescue. A slightly more fre-quent occurrence is a rescue dog that was sired by a Club member’s dog, but even this situation is being seen less often as attitudes about stud dog owners’ responsibilities are changing.

Of dogs with known backgrounds that end up in Res-cue, most were obtained either from “backyard breed-ers,”1 pet stores, or directly from commercial breeders or brokers (either via the internet or newspaper ads). Many of these dogs come from bloodlines imported from overseas (unfortunately puppy mills are not just an American problem), and any connections to Club members are typically at least a couple generations back in the dogs’ pedigrees. So Lynn Duckett and I were understandably both concerned and curious when we were each contacted last year by a volunteer for another rescue group who claimed that four dogs (a mother and three of her adult daughters) her group had purchased at an estate sale were from “your breeders.” Since she refused to share pedigree infor-mation with us unless we gave her group money, we didn’t learn anything further until a littermate to these dogs was relinquished by its owner to Rescue in June of this year. The sire was in fact bred (though not owned) by a USKBTC member who is now deceased; however, on the dam’s side, the names are further back in the pedigree like we typically see. But the chain of events cumulating in five dogs (that we know of) ending up in rescues should be studied by anyone who breeds and sell dogs, or who provides stud ser-vice.

The story starts off well several years ago, with a USKBTC member in the Midwest selling a show-quality bitch puppy to a person in the Southwest. This person was a USKBTC member for a few years, fin-ished the bitch, bred her, and then sold one of the re-sulting bitch puppies to a local woman. I don’t know if this woman ever showed her dog, or intended to show 1defined as a person who casually breeds purebred dogs with little or no regard to the breed standard, genetically linked de-fects, or temperament.

her, but the dog never finished her championship. Nevertheless, a USKBTC member on the West coast agreed to provide champion stud service and this un-finished bitch produced a litter of puppies, which the breeder advertised for sale in her local newspaper. A long-distance truck driver from Kansas, whose regular route takes him through her city, saw her ad and pur-chased one of the bitch puppies, along with the dam. Turns out he and his wife breed and sell dogs on the side, regularly advertising several breeds in newspa-pers along the husband’s trucking route. They knew the stock that the general public puts in AKC registra-tions and champion pedigrees, and proudly touted this information in their ads for the Kerry litters they subse-quently produced, along with the fact that their puppies were champion sired!

Hopefully everyone who is reading this is shaking their heads in disbelief at this last statement. After all, who in their right mind would provide champion stud service to someone who can best be described as a small-scale puppy mill? Well, turns out that somebody in a neighboring state, who was never a member of the USKBTC, had a dog that could most diplomatically be called a “finishable pet.” This Kerry was originally pur-chased from a backyard breeder, and sired by a dog whose owner was later banned for life from the AKC for animal cruelty, so it’s safe to assume that the own-er did not get much in the way of mentoring and sup-port from either the breeder or the owner of the sire! This man, who went on to become a backyard breeder in his own right with an unfinished bitch from another questionable source, was extremely proud of his male and what he had accomplished, and only too flattered when these very nice people who lived several hours away wanted to use him for their bitches.

The resulting litters were advertised in major newspa-pers throughout the Central and Western US, and one of the bitch puppies was purchased by a lawyer who lived in Tennessee. It was here that he bred his bitch, and he still had three of the bitches from that litter (whether for breeding purposes or because he hadn’t found buyers for them yet is unclear) when he became the perpetrator of a grisly double-murder suicide, and his remaining dogs ended up sold to the highest bid-ders.

Stuff can happen to even the most careful breeders, and I am certainly not implying that the USKBTC

2The term “puppy mill” typically refers to USDA licensed class A commercial breeders, but this couple is not required to have a license since they sell all their dogs directly to the public instead of through a pet store or broker. However, I believe this term describes their business much more accurately than “backyard breeder.”

breeders whose dogs appear in this particular pedi-gree deserve blame or wouldn’t have done things dif-ferently had they known what the outcome would be. But like the saying at the beginning of this article, res-cue situations can frequently be traced to seemingly inconsequential acts—responsible breeders selling dogs to people who are less-experienced/careful, and so on down the line.

Over the years I have served as a Rescue volunteer, breeder referral contact, and public education coordi-nator, I have been fortunate to receive excellent advice from both experienced, responsible breeders and other rescue volunteers on screening prospective owners. First, when you get a phone call or e-mail inquiry, listen carefully to what they tell you, particularly where they live, how they heard about you, what they want a Kerry for, whether they have other pets or children, etc. Be careful what you tell them about what you have availa-ble or what your requirements are during this initial contact—some potential buyers are eager enough to get a dog that they will tailor what they tell you to what-ever they think you want to hear! Also make a note of any names of individuals or dogs that they mention.

Be especially wary of potential buyers who say they want a show dog or might be interested in showing only after you tell them you want a show home, or that any dog sold as a pet has to be spayed or neutered. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous individuals have learned that many breeders’ caution will fly out the win-dow if the buyer just says they will show! Several Ker-ries from both here and Europe whose breeders be-lieved were destined for show homes have actually ended up in puppy mills because the breeders never bothered to check out the buyers’ stories. One notori-ous commercial breeder went as far as to tell several USKBTC members that he was an AKC judge; two members ended up selling him Kerries, whose champi-on-laden pedigrees are a major selling point for the many litters he’s bred.

Check out potential buyers and anything they tell you! By this I don’t mean you need to hire a private investi-gator; a few minutes on the computer or a couple of phone calls is all you usually need to do. I have found that www.whitepages.com is a great place to start; the reverse lookup feature allows you to verify names and addresses with phone numbers. I also use reverse lookups to find out the identity of people advertising litters in newspapers or on the internet, along with peo-ple who call and don’t tell me their names. Caller ID is an invaluable tool for screening calls, especially if you activate the feature that does not allow private/blocked numbers to ring through. Internet search engines such as Google are a fast and easy way to find information; simply type in a name or other pertinent words and see

what comes up. For example, if you were to look up the name of that aforementioned commercial breeder, you would not only find a large number of internet ads for his puppies but the fact that he is an oft-quoted spokesperson for his state’s puppy mill lobby!

Contact anybody that potential buyers mention by name, particularly other breeders and dog people, and veterinarians—just because they say that person will vouch for them doesn’t mean it’s true. When I was doing breeder referral for the USKBTC, potential buy-ers frequently used my name as a reference when talk-ing to breeders, in spite of the fact that I didn’t know most of them past the initial phone call they had made to me, or, worse yet, wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy! One man in particular, who, like Dracula searching for his long-lost bride, seemed to be trying to locate the reincarnation of the apparently perfect Kerry he had owned years before, used my name and sever-al others (along with the fact that his previous Kerry had been a champion) to convince a string of breeders to sell him dogs, all of which he found fault with and either returned, sold, or gave away within two months. The breeders who took the time to contact “Lisa Frank-lin” or any of those breeders he mentioned got an ear-ful, but saved themselves a lot of time and heartache!

You can also make more general inquiries to other dog people who live in a potential buyer’s area, particularly if the buyer lives in another part of the country or you know that there are other breeders with dogs available who are much nearer. It could be they want a dog from you because they like your particular dogs or are familiar with your name. Or, they could be contacting you because nobody closer will sell to them! Diplomat-ically worded postings to internet lists requesting pri-vate replies often yield useful information, or at least a reassurance that your prospective buyer is okay.

The last thing I always recommend is that the breeders themselves or a trusted friend or acquaintance check out a buyer’s home before giving final approval to a sale, as well as to provide follow-up assistance. Usu-ally this is fairly routine and simply verifies what the buyer has already told you, but occasionally there are some surprises. In particular, if a potential buyer acts offended and calls off a deal because you require a home visit (or a contract, or a limited registration), pat yourself on the back and consider yourself and your dog lucky!

Kindergarten Puppy Training By Margo Steinman For my third installment on training I was intending to talk about formal obedience training, but instead I'd like to tell you about my experiences with Ro-wan, my now 15 week old puppy and KPT (Kindergarten puppy training). This was my first experience with KPT. I am going to a large training facility near Seattle, WA, where the owners, Dana and Larry Babb have a training school, Paws-Ability. It is their full-time career, and they teach classes in all three levels of obedience; agility; conformation handling; KPT; and tricks for puppies. They also have a drill team, and participate in various events with their students. The Babbs are experienced in training Kerries, as well as other terrier breeds, so I was eager to take Rowan there. The six week course is composed of six one hour classes, and we began at the second week, when Rowan was 10 weeks old, the minimum age a puppy can begin the class. The class introduces puppies to the collar and lead, teaches them how to interact with other puppies (although the puppies are not taken off lead and al-lowed to mingle with each other), simple basic com-mands, how to get a puppy's attention, and how to correct unwanted behavior, such as jumping on peo-ple, barking, chewing, and messing in the house. The puppies become confident as they learn simple com-mands followed by food and praise. Training is accomplished with food (cheese sticks are great motivators) and lots of praise. The exercis-es are all done on lead. I used a flat nylon buckle col-lar and a six foot leather obedience lead for all train-ing. I will use a show lead only for conformation. To teach the puppy to sit, with the puppy on lead in front of you, slowly raise your right hand, holding a small piece of cheese, above the puppy's head, and give the sit command. As the puppy raises its head up to get the cheese, it usually will sit. When it does, praise it and give it the cheese. For puppies that stand on their hind legs to get the treat, you can light-ly press the curves behind the rear legs, and when the puppy sits, praise and treat it. Virtually all of the

pups learned this after two or three tries. When you raise your hand you are also giving the puppy a hand signal to sit. After the puppy knows the sit com-mand, it has also learned to associate sitting with the hand signal (raising your right hand), as well as the food. At this point, don't treat every time you give the command, as the puppy will only sit for food. For the down from a sitting position, hold some cheese in your right hand, lower your hand in front of the puppy's nose and move your hand forward on the floor while you are giving the down command. Most puppies will stretch their front legs in front of them as they follow the food, and gradually go down. If the puppy gets up, give it the sit command, move the food in front of it and give the down com-mand, touching the back of its hind legs if it tries to stand. Praise and treat when it goes down. This is also done when the puppy is standing. For the stand from the sit, hold the food in front of and at the same level as the pup's nose. Tell the pup-py to stand and move the food forward in front of the puppy until it stands, then praise and treat. If you plan to show in conformation, use the stack com-mand when the puppy is standing, and position it while baiting with the cheese. This should also be done on the grooming table, and I begin this at 4-5 weeks old. All exercises are broken down into components. In between exercises, play with the puppy. The training session should be fun, showing the puppy what do and treating and praising when it does. The goal of the three initial exercises is not to hold the puppy in position (the stay); that comes later, af-ter the puppy has learned the three basic commands. This type of basic training focuses the puppy's atten-tion on its trainer, builds confidence in the puppy, and rapport between the puppy and trainer. We saw a very informative video on aggression - how to recognize it in a litter and in an individual puppy, and how to deal with aggressive behavior in puppies and adults in the home. Although Dana does not begin agility training until the puppy is at least one year old, we introduced the

puppies to some of the agility equipment. A round tabletop with a tennis ball under it was used to teach the puppies balance and how to use their fronts and rears. Weave poles were also used for the same purpose. The puppies also went through a tire, stepped over two low jumps and a series of pvc tubes, and got on a low pause table. The puppies were taught to go through a tunnel by collapsing it so the puppy could step through it, and then gradually extending the tunnel so eventually the puppies were going the full length. This demonstrat-ed how easy it is to train a puppy (or adult) doing an exercise in gradual stages. Most puppies and adult dogs would not even enter a long tunnel, but if the dog begins with a ring to step through, the tunnel can be gradually increased in length and the puppy will run through it happily, especially if you are waiting at the other end with food and praise! This is a concept used in all dog training. KPT introduced Rowan to strange surroundings, people, and dogs, and was extremely helpful in teaching him basic commands. It will be a lot easier to move up to more formal training in obedience or conformation, and it is an essential tool in teaching a puppy how to adapt to its new, or existing, home.

A Word from Charitable Funds… As many of you know the US Kerry Blue Charitable Fund was established in 2002. Its purpose was to serve the Kerry Blue Terrier in four important areas: 1) Rescue Fund – this fund supports grants used to provide Kerry Blue Terrier rescue services. 2) Health and Genetics Fund - this fund makes grants in support of research in areas of health and ge-netics of particular importance to the Kerry Blue Terrier. 3) Education Fund – the education fund supports education of all those interested in the Kerry Blue Terri-er including publications, websites, and seminars. 4) General Fund – donations to this fund are used to support the work of the other funds through internal grants to those funds. Undesignated gifts will initially be held in this fund. Since the Fund was established we have worked diligently to build the assets of the Funds while undertak-ing major support of the PNA Research being done at the University of Missouri. To date we have award-ed over $20,000 in grants to support Health and Genetics, Education, and Rescue. This is quite impres-sive, since our Fund is relatively new compared to other Parent Clubs whose equivalent organizations are often decades older than ours. Our current objective is to continue to grow fund assets while undertaking occasional substantial support such as the PNA Grant. We believe the real key to long term growth will be planned giving that includes the Funds in the wills of our members. Other comparable organizations have used this method as the key to growing their assets. The reality is that we must grow our financial resources substantially in order to having a meaningful impact and that means it will take many years to be in a position to have a significant impact on our core areas. You can help by considering making the Funds one of the recipients of your estate. In addition, support an area of interest today. We have grown our asset base through small gifts and that will be crucial to our future. Feel free to contact any Board member for more information on how you can make a difference!

Blueprints Summer 2007

In September, organizations all around the country will be celebrating AKC® Responsible Dog Ownership Day. These events give us a wonderful opportunity to present our dogs in a very positive way to the communities in which we live and work. In view of the numerous pieces of negative dog legislation throughout the country, these celebrations are a terrific way to demonstrate to the public that many dog owners are indeed conscientious. For a list of events searchable by state, visit the AKC website at http://www.akc.org/clubs/rdod/events/. Below, you will find just a few of the many ways we can all be responsible, dog owning members of our communities. These examples were taken from the list posted at http://www.akc.org/public_education/responsible_dog_owner.cfm#breed, and are condensed for publication here. Recognize the commitment. Evaluate your lifestyle. Consider an older dog. Register your dog. Prepare yourself. Dog-Proof Your Home. Set a containment policy. Get a collar. Buy some toys. Find a veterinarian. Let your dog adjust. Housetrain. Set house rules. Feed a good diet. Exercise. Vaccinate. Prevent disease. Provide chew toys. Bathe your dog. Groom your dog. Clip those nails. Clean those teeth. Prevent obesity. Know your breed’s health risks. Be alert to changing needs. End suffering. I.D. your dog. Consider microchips or tattoos. Provide shelter. Watch the heat. Travel safely. Find a pet-sitter or boarding kennel. Prepare for disaster.

Establish an emergency contact. Make a will. Take pictures. Play. Go on walks. Talk to your dog. Love your dog. Switch out toys. Give your time. Leave the radio on. Give a massage. Make that tail wag. Go on trips. Ease separation anxiety. Be the alpha. Teach basic commands. Socialize your dog. Supervise play with children. Give your dog a job. Breed to improve. Contain bitches in heat. Perform genetic screening. Join an AKC club. Earn an AKC title. Find a mentor. Read all about it. Set a good example. Respect your neighbors. Prevent nuisance barking. Don’t leave “leavings”. Respect local laws. Fight anti-dog legislation. Let your dog help others. Get a Canine Good Citizen® certificate. Show your pride. Encourage breed behavior. Go to class.

List of Disciplines eligible for awards: AKC Agility Title AKC Conformation Title Earth Dog/Hunting Title: Hunting Certificate (HC) awarded by American Working Terrier Association* Fly Ball Title: Flyball Dog Champion (FDCH) awarded by the North American Flyball Association* Herding Trial Dog Title: AKC Herding Tested (HT) or Pre-Trial Tested (PT) or Herding Capability Title (HCT) awarded by Ameri-can Herding Breeds Association AKC Obedience Title (CD or higher, RA (Rally Advanced) or higher) AKC Tracking Title *AKC title will be eligible when approved Eligible dogs will be submitted for award(s) by owner(s) in the following manner: Properly filled in application including: Enclosure of a photocopy of earned titles as required Enclosure of comments or brief biography of dog's accomplishments which will be published in the Blueprints (subject to editing)

along with award presented, including name of owner(s) and breeder(s). Photos may be sent by owner for inclusion in the awards issue of Blueprints printed subject to room available.

Award applications will be accepted within the following fiscal year time period: July 31 to July 31. Members will submit applica-tions during this time period. Those applications received after this time period will be held over for the next year for qualification and presentation. Award presentation will be made at the Annual General Meeting in October (Montgomery County). Awards not presented at the AGM will be mailed to recipients. ACTUAL AWARD: The award will be a certificate suitable for framing signed by the president of the club and Versatility committee representative to include the following information: The name: United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club Versatility Award The name of the Award tier (see below) The registered name of the dog (with all titles, as the owner wishes it to appear on award) The name of the owner(s) of record (at least ONE owner must be a current USKBTC member) The date the Award is presented ONE certificate will be presented per dog for each award tier. A keepsake memento commemorating the award will be awarded at the club's discretion. The own-er is responsible for submitting the dog's name as it should appear on the award. NOTE: Accomplishing any of these disciplines may take more than one fiscal year to achieve. Therefore the applicant may sub-mit an application along with proof of awards at any time in the dog's competitive life provided that he/she submit the application by the prescribed fiscal year deadline to qualify for that year's award presentations. A separate award and certificate will be awarded for each additional discipline tier achieved no matter what time frame is required to achieve that award. Example: Dog A is already a Ch., CDX, TD. Therefore he will immediately qualify under (3) disciplines (conformation, obedience, tracking) making the dog eligible to receive (2) awards (Bronze and Silver) from the club. SPECIAL NOTE: To recognize those members who have achieved multiple disciplines in the past with their dogs, awards will be offered to eligible title holders (with proper application and proof of title) retroactive back to and including the year 1995. THE UNITED STATES KERRY BLUE TERRIER CLUB CODE OF ETHICS

This document defines the ethical standards to which we ascribe as a condition of membership in the United Stated Kerry Blue Terrier Club (USKBTC). Membership is a privi-lege conferred by the Board of Governors, acting for the Membership, upon those individuals who meet the high standards set forth in the Club Constitution and Bylaws and this Code. As members, we are individually charged with complying with this code and demanding similar compliance of all other members. We must hold the interest of the Kerry Blue Terrier superior to our own in exercising the responsibilities that accompany the privileges of membership.

I. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MEMBER

Members of the USKBTC, as Stewards to the breed, have the obligation to protect and serve the best interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier at all times. A member's every action should reflect credit on themselves, the USKBTC and, above all, the Kerry Blue Terrier.

The approved standard for the breed is the fundamental imperative guiding our actions. Members have the obligation to protect and serve these standards as a condition of membership.

Members must be familiar with and comply with the rules of the American Kennel Club (AKC); the Constitution and By-laws of the USKBTC; and (as appropriate) the rules established by any member club of the USKBTC.

Members will observe the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship at all times. Whether as a breeder, exhibitor, or spectator, they shall conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on the Kerry Blue Terrier, dogs in general, and the sport of showing dogs.

Page 70: Summer 2007 - Kerry Blue Terrier · 2018-07-15 · Inside Back Cover $50 plus $7per photo Centerfold $100 plus$7per photo Contract Rates USKBTC-Members ... William Kearney (NY) heritagekerry@optonline.net

Blueprints Summer 2007

Members shall maintain the highest standards of health and sanitation for their own Kerry Blue Terriers, as well as for any other animals in their possession or entrusted to their care. They shall demand the same high standards of others, members and non-members alike.

II. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A BREEDER

A Breeder shall: Be guided at all times by the approved standard for the Kerry Blue Terrier and shall consider breeding only those specimens that conform to the standard. When contemplating breeding a litter or providing the services of a stud dog, strive toward maintaining breed type and producing dogs of exceptional quality, temperament,

and condition. Breeding or supporting breeding to a lesser standard is not acceptable. Use for breeding only those dogs that are healthy and free from serious congenital and hereditary defects. Refrain from further use, any bitch or stud dog that has developed

such a health problem or produced any serious inherited defects detrimental to the offspring and the overall well being of the breed. Not use a bitch for breeding prior to reaching eighteen (18) months of age (preferably 24 months) or older than eight (8) years of age. A bitch should not be bred more than

two (2) out of three (3) consecutive heat cycles, nor produce more than five (5) litters in her lifetime. Recognizing the variations in heat cycles and sizes of litters, valid ex-ceptions may exist, however it is incumbent on the breeder to exercise good judgment in exercising such exceptions.

Not sell puppies to pet shops either outright or on consignment; supply puppies for auctions, raffles, or other such activities; refrain from selling to persons whose intention

(either known or suspected) is to resell or use the puppy in a breeding program not complying with this code of ethics. The breeder shall ensure that the prospective buyer is prepared to provide the same degree of care required of members of the USKBTC. The Code of Ethics should be provided and discussed with potential buyers as part of a thorough screening process. All buyers should be encouraged to become members of the USKBTC and member clubs.

Promptly apply for AKC registration of the litter. Puppies should not be sold prior to reaching ten (10) weeks of age (preferably 12 weeks). The sale of every dog shall in-

clude a signed registration or registration application (Blue Slip), and a four-generation pedigree. Any exceptions to these requirements, or valid restrictions or limitations imposed as conditions to the sale (e.g., no breeding) must be agreed to in writing by both parties at the time of sale. It is strongly recommended that a written agreement ac-company all sales. Buyers should be provided with assistance and support in the setting of ears and in learning proper grooming. If the buyer is not located in the same area, the breeder should make arrangements with another USKBTC member in that area to assist the new owner.

Provide with each sale, a record of dated and types of immunization given, immunizations required, and veterinary health records. Instructions should be provided, preferably

in writing, on diseases and hereditary factors related to the breed, proper medical care, feeding, and grooming. Providing a copy of the current USKBTC Handbook represents a means of conveying this type of information, and is a sound investment on the part of the breeder. No puppy should be sold without either temporary or permanent protec-tion against distemper-hepatitis and parvo. Puppies should have a veterinary examination, and worming if required, before sale.

Maintain accurate and complete records of stock, matings, pedigrees, show records, and transfers. Breeders are responsible for conducting research on their pedigrees to en-

sure correct ancestry, accurate spelling of names, and correct registration numbers. Breeders should be familiar with and comply with all record keeping requirements re-quired by the AKC. Litter registration applications must be correct and promptly requested. Individual puppy registration should be completed in a timely manner.

Shall not engage in false or misleading advertising or other misrepresentations with respect to their own breeding. They shall not malign others by making false or misleading

statements regarding another member's dogs, breeding practices, or person. Advertising should not be worded to attract undesirable buyers nor encourage raising dogs for profit.

Consider the growing problems related to excess dogs ending up in animal shelters and should exercise sound judgment and prudent restraint in their breeding programs.

Litters should be limited to numbers that are consistent with achieving a sound breeding program and the best interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier. Be prepared to assume lifetime responsibility for any litter produced.

III. RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN EXHIBITOR OR HANDLER Act professionally at all times in caring for and exhibiting any dog in your charge. Do not engage in any questionable contact with judges prior to exhibiting under them. Comply with AKC Rules and Regulations for Dog Shows, Obedience Trials, Field Trials, and The Guidelines for Dog Show Judges. Exhibit or handle only those dogs that conform as closely as possible to the approved standard. Do not indulge in the practice of making "kennel majors", or exhibiting filler dogs that they know themselves to be unworthy of championships, for the purpose of finishing

dogs. Such practices lessen the meaning and value of a championship and do not serve the breed.

IV. ENFORCEMENT

The USKBTC expects adherence to this Code of Ethics and blatant disregard of these standards will not be condoned. Violations of the standards are not in the best interests

of the Club or the breed. Such behavior can serve as a cause of imposing discipline or terminating membership if charges are brought before the Board of Governors in ac-cordance with the procedures as defined in Article VI (Discipline) of the USKBTC Constitution and Bylaws.

Article VI addresses the specific procedures for proffering charges; the hearing process; and the rights of the parties involved. Each member is expected to be fully familiar

with this very important provision of the By-laws.
