SET A ROUTINE FOR GOOD HEALTH
• When the body works with the rhythms of nature, then it is able to function at its best. Our
body is programmed to work with the cycles of day and night and the seasons throughout the
year. If we honour our body by working within these cycles, we are more inclined to have good
health, lots of energy and a calm mind.
• The best time to wake up is between 6 am to 8 am. The first thing, drink a glass of warm water
with a squeeze of lemon juice in it.
• Urinate, then clear your bowel .Make this a habit. After this, wash hands and face. Brush teeth.
Scrape the tongue of built- up amal (toxin) using a tongue scraper or metal spoon. Scrape
gently twice down the middle and once either side of the tongue.
• Dry body brush yourself for five minutes, starting at the feet and working up the body. Then
go for a daily self-massage routine using warmed sesame oil. Bathe in warm water, never hot
or cold.
• Then exercise gently- do yoga, walk or breathe in deeply. Dress in clean clothes.
• Whatever be your choice for breakfast, limit salt intake ; avoid oily, fatty, fried foods, alcohol,
caffeine, red meat, hot spices, chemicals, preservatives, cheese, yogurt and soya sauce.
• Before breakfast, sip hot water often throughout the morning, for about 30 to 60 minutes.
• Make it a regular routine to have your lunch between 12 midday- 1pm. It goes without saying,
clean hands before eating. Lunch needs to be the biggest meal of a day as the digestive fire of
pitta is at its peak.
• Consider having 1/8th teaspoon fresh grated ginger with a few drops lemon juice before lunch

and follow with a few sips of warm water. Choose foods such as soups, whole grain breads,
grains, salads, steamed or stir-fried vegetables, beans or legumes.
• Avoid drinking with meals. Warm water can be sipped 5minutes after eating to aid digestion.
Sit quietly for 5 minutes after eating. Include a gentle walk of 5 to 15 minutes to aid digestion.
• Practice the art of having dinner early- preferable between 6 pm and 7:30 pm. Consider having
1/8 teaspoon fresh grated ginger with few drops lemon juice before dinner, follow with a few
sips of warm water.
• Eat a light dinner comprising fresh vegetables, salads, cooked vegetables, whole grains, and
legumes, followed by something sweet.
• Always leave 3 hours between dinner and going to bed. Only consume warm herbal teas after
dinner or warm water. Try to avoid stressful activity in the evening. Retire to bed by 10 to 10:
30 pm. Do not read, eat or watch TV while eating or in bed.
• How about trying to limit your intake of animal’s meat? It really helps to stay fit and have a
long healthy life

(1x8=8)

e) Which things are to be avoided during breakfast?
f) What is recommended by the writer before dinner and lunch?
g) What is the suggestion of the writer at the end?
H) What is the central theme of the passage?
Q.2 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. (12 Marks)
You hope to do several things every day. At the end of each day, most of them are not done. You may
be using a ‘to- do- list’ but discover in short while that it is not helping you much. Tasks keep adding to
it. In a few weeks, it starts looking like a list of things you will never do and you feel stressed about it.
Making a to –do- list is not enough. It is useful only when you understand the key aspects of it and
work on it further.
To begin with, recognize that a to-do –list is only a pool of tasks. It is just a raw collection that gives
you no idea of how you will get to it. To make it useful you have to define the ‘when’. Entering detail
about when you will do the different tasks, gives to- do- list a meaning .When you begin creating a
Downloaded from www.studiestoday.com
Downloaded from www.studiestoday.com
schedule, your focus shifts to how long you have to work on each task to complete it. This way you
are forced to be realistic about your goals.
You cannot do all the tasks on the list on the same day. So, you should learn to prioritise. Rank the
tasks using numbers or group them using letters of the alphabet, according to the order of importance.
Now start working according to the schedule where your schedule went wrong by paying close
attention to how you are spending the day.
Some of the possible reasons are: you waste time, made mistake in assessing how much time a task
would take or deal with ‘urgent’ tasks frequently. If the reason is wasting time, learn to concentrate
on your work. If you made a mistake in time assessment, prepare a more realistic schedule.
Another way to prioritise tasks is based on the creative energy they require. Separate the tasks into
creative and boring ones. This approach helps you to stay productive even during cheerless parts of
the day.
Making schedule for items in your to-do-list does not promise that all of them are accomplished. But
you can at least be strategic about what is left behind and feel happy that you achieved what you
accommodated in the finite space. This way you can begin the next day on a confident note rather
than feeling helpless and frustrated about failing.
(i) Answer the following questions briefly: (2x4=8)
(a) What makes a ‘to-do-list’ useful?
(b) Why is the ‘to-do-list’ described as a raw collection?
(c) What is prioritising?
(d) How do you become realistic about your goals?
(ii) Find a word in the passage which conveys similar meaning as the following: (1x4=4)
a) many
b)worked
c)compelled
d)Rank things according to importance

It is strange how one is puffed up with pride on getting momentary
praise for his worldly achievements. People are so much lost in
their day-to-day activities that they do not bother what you have achieved. They are
concerned with their own self. I too prided
myself of becoming the Miss College Beauty only yesterday. I began
to extol myself to the skies for, having been blessed with fairy – like beauty. I compared myself
to the best beauty queen of the world. But alas! the realization that I was just an ordinary
creature with just fair complexion and sharp features came too sooner than later.I felt what
was needed was the inner beauty, the beauty of the true mind and pure heart. The world, I
have begun to realize, loves lofty minds and appreciates such people as have noble qualities.
Physical beauty is fleeting, goodness always prevails. Man's good actions are cherished more
than his outward beauty.

Dear friends, I wish to highlight some prominent attributes that a good officer should cultivate
in himself to win the acclaim of those whom he is called upon to serve There is no doubt that
officer remain burdened with work and are likely to lose patience and polite manners. But the
true test of a good officer lies in handling even the toughest job skilfully in the trying times.
He should have tact and willingness to perform his duties to the best of his abilities. He may
not be able to please everybody but he can., satisfy the people with his' polite and sweet
temperament and etiquettes. Those who come to seek his favours should go satisfied and
grudging even if he is not able to do what they expect of him. Keeping himself cool and not
losing his temper will surely help him do maximum public service, besides not taxing himself
with physical exertions or mental tensions. A good officer ought to have sincerity and devotion
in his work besides zeal to be helpful and accommodating to others.
Thank you.
11. Helen was just nineteen months old when she was struck by a strange illness. They called
it acute congestion of the stomach and brain. When the fever was gone, there was great
rejoicing in the family. But no one, not even the doctor, knew that Helen would ever see or
hear again. Helen recalls how her mother would calm and comfort her during the illness.
She felt her eyes very hot and dry. Everything went dim and dim each day. Gradually she got
used to her silence and darkness. It was then nothing short of a nightmare. Only the
memories of the seen world remained with her for ever Those memories filled her mind
with joy. She would often remember .the glimpses of broad, green fields, a luminous sky
and flowers.. She feels satisfied and says, "If we have once seen, the day is ours, and what
the day has shown."
Or
Helen Keller possessed the sense of smell to an unusual degree. Some people called it her
"sixth sense". When she was a child, she smelled everything and knew where she was, or
what neighbour's house she was passing by the distinctive odours. In her book, she recalls:
"I used to feel along the square stiff boxwood hedges, and, guided by the sense of smell
would find the first violets and lilies". From the odour coming from the earth, she knew that
it always precedes a thunderstorm. One beautiful spring morning she became aware of a

subtle fragrance in the air. Soon she recognized it to be the odour of the mimosa blossoms.
She felt her way to the mimosa tree in no time. She had become an expert in odours. When
preparations for making barbecue were being made, the savoury odour of the meat made
her hungry long before the tables were set. Thus, the sense of smell, like the sense of touch,
helped her a lot in her education, as in life.
