SUMMARY OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT MODES RESEARCH ASSESSMENT In this unit the students will complete a research assessment task. The style of the research assessment task will be an 800-word research report. The students will have 4 weeks to complete this task. This task will be focused around the area of Focus Area A – Learning Physical Skills. It will focus on biomechanical understandings around the sport of swimming. To complete this task the students will be required to videotape their physical performance of the freestyle stroke in competitive swimming. This will take place in a prac lesson during the introductory phase of the unit. The students will be required to complete a biomechanical analysis of their own performance in the freestyle swimming stroke. The student must identify aspects of their stroke that are inefficient. The students’ evaluations must include a discussion of how they can improve the efficiency of their freestyle swimming stroke to maximize their swimming speed. Their analyses should consider the biomechanical principles as relevant to the content covered in the theoretical lessons. Scaffolding is provided for this assessment task throughout the unit. The students will engage in PowerPoint presentations on the relevant biomechanical principles and will have access to these presentations online. The students will be instructed on the correct technique for the freestyle stroke from simple to complex environments. Students will have multiple opportunities to practice analysing videotaped physical performances of both elite athletes as well as their own and a partner’s performance. Students will also have multiple opportunities to provide feedback on physical performances as well throughout the unit. The students will be assessed on the dimensions of acquire, apply and evaluate. Students are expected to recall biomechanical principles associated with freestyle swimming as discussed in class and to use appropriate textual features within the report style of writing (acquire). Students are expected to analyse their own biomechanical inefficiencies when performing the freestyle stroke and discuss these principles in relation to their physical performance (apply). Students are also expected to produce solutions on improving the efficiency of their freestyle swimming stroke (evaluate). Each dimension will be assessed according to a criterion rubric. PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT To assess the students’ physical performances throughout the unit it is important that this occurs on a number of occasions throughout the unit with judgements relating to the quality of performance made as in iterative process throughout the unit. Continuous assessment of physical performances will occur in a variety of contexts with a greater focus on more complex authentic contexts. In this unit the students will be assessed on their competitive swimming techniques. The students will be instructed on the freestyle stroke, breast stroke, back stroke and butterfly stroke. Students will be provided with ample amounts of practice time throughout the unit which will allow for continuous assessment to occur. The students will participate in a final performance assessment class where they will have one last chance to improve their overall mark for physical performance for the term. Students must show that they have implemented skills, theory and conceptual understandings of the correct competitive swimming stroke techniques and methods of improvement. Students will be assessed according to the dimensions of acquire (perform the stroke with fluency, speed and accuracy and in a technically proficient manner), apply (adapts responses to training environment and modified tasks and displays high intensity with adaptability and control) and evaluate (implements physical responses in complex performance environment with the ability to cope with a competitive situation). Each dimension will be assessed according to a criterion rubric.
