Hendrix College Proposed Curricular Revision

Department: Foreign Languages Date: 9/30/2005 Proposed change (one sentence summary; please attach departmental catalog copy as it would appear with the proposed change.) Addition of Latin 410: Advanced Readings and Research in Latin Literature, a 400-level course in Latin. Rationale for course within departmental and collegiate context. (Use separate sheet, if necessary) A number of students want to continue their study of Latin to the 400-level. This course will allow them to do so. In addition, it will be able to serve as the capstone course for students with an Interdisciplinary Studies major involving Classics. Capstones for these majors are currently done as independent studies or as exams not bearing course credit--a formal course context for such a culminating experience is preferable. Proposed code(s): Which, if any, course codes (Challenges of the Contemporary World, Domains, Capacities, Physical Activities) will this course fulfill? [Note that a listing of codes with approved criteria are listed in the Catalog and on the Hendrix website]. W2, LS On a separate sheet of paper indicate which of the criteria are met by the course, and how the course meets those criteria. Please see attached. Does this replace a course? No. This will be a permanent course. How often will the course be offered? As needed, usually in the fall semester. Prerequisite(s) and/or recommended prior courses: Latin 310 or the equivalent, or permission of the instructor. How will the change be staffed? by Rebecca Resinski; if enrollment numbers do not permit a separate section for Latin 410, Latin 410 will meet concurrently with Latin 210 and 310, but will entail additional assignments and individual meetings with the instructor. Equipment, supply, and bibliographic requirements (Items and cost) none Will the above items be covered by a present budget? n/a Proposed date of implementation: Fall 2006 Signatures Initiator(s) of Proposal___________________________________________________ Department Chair_______________________________________________________ Area Chair_____________________________________________________________

Suggested catalog copy: Latin 410 Advanced Readings and Research in Latin Literature A course in which the translation and interpretation of Latin texts is combined with the reading and analysis of current scholarship; the course will culminate in a research project and portfolio. Specific topics and authors will vary by semester. Prerequisite: LATI 310 or the equivalent, or permission of instructor. Rationale for LS coding: The course will focus on specific pieces of Latin literature. We will approach the texts of the course from a variety of perspectives and with considerations of grammar and syntax, literary genre, social and historical context, and critical reception and analysis by scholars. Rationale for W2 coding: In this course students will practice writing in the ways appropriate to and expected in the discipline of Classics. Writing assignments will include precis and analysis of secondary scholarship, essays focused on specific aspects of the primary texts under consideration, and a final synthetic paper on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with the professor. All of the assignments will go through drafts and revisions, with individualized support provided by the professor. All completed and revised assignments will be collected into a portfolio at the end of the semester.

Hendrix College Proposed Odyssey Coding for New Courses

Please forward the completed form to Peggy Morrison, Bailey Library, by November 1, 2005 Department Foreign Languages Date 9/30/2005 Course number and title Latin 410: Advanced Readings and Research in Latin Literature Proposed code(s): Which Odyssey code(s) will this course fulfill? Please consult the catalog copy adopted at the November 2004 faculty meeting, the Odyssey guidelines, and the coding checklist distributed with this packet for specifics regarding individual Odyssey categories. Undergraduate Research UR Indicate below how the specific criteria associated with the requested Odyssey coding are met by the course. As the title of this course suggests, research is a core component of the course. Students will combine their own translation and interpretation of Latin texts with a consideration of how those texts have been understood and analyzed by scholars. Students will learn the bibliographic skills of conducting research on ancient texts and will learn about different methodological approaches to those texts. Students will synthesize their own interpretations and their analyses of the interpretations of scholars in a research paper and a portfolio of other written assignments. Students will present their work formally to each other as well as to the students in Latin 210 and 310. Students will also present their work in on-campus venues open to the rest of the community (for instance, on a designated Odyssey presentation day). Students will be encouraged (though not required) to submit abstracts to NCUR or other off-campus undergraduate research conferences. This Odyssey coding will be permanent__x____ Can the Odyssey component of this course be supported by existing funding? yes Signatures Initiator(s) of Proposal___________________________________________________ Department Chair_______________________________________________________

Department: Foreign Languages Date: 9/30/2005 Proposed change (one sentence summary; please attach departmental catalog copy as it would appear with the proposed change.) Change in the catalog description of Greek 115 and Greek 125. Rationale for course within departmental and collegiate context. (Use separate sheet, if necessary) The change will make it clear that Greek 115 and Greek 125 are appropriate courses for two constituencies of students: those who want to read classical Greek authors and those who want to read the Greek New Testament. Greek 110 and Greek 120 will continue to be offered when the interest of potential students and/or the interest of the professor teaching the course is primarily focused on New Testament/Koine Greek. Proposed code(s): Which, if any, course codes (Challenges of the Contemporary World, Domains, Capacities, Physical Activities) will this course fulfill? [ Note that a listing of codes with approved criteria are listed in the Catalog and on the Hendrix website]. Greek 125 will continue to fufill the FL capacity. On a separate sheet of paper indicate which of the criteria are met by the course, and how the course meets those criteria. n/a (code is already in place) Does this replace a course? No. This will be a _x_permanent course. How often will the course be offered? One of the Greek sequences will continue to be offered every other year or every three years. Prerequisite(s) and/or recommended prior courses: Greek 115 or the equivalent will continue to be the prerequisite for Greek 125. How will the change be staffed? n/a (course is already in place) Equipment, supply, and bibliographic requirements (Items and cost) None. Will the above items be covered by a present budget? n/a Proposed date of implementation: Fall 2006 Signatures Initiator(s) of Proposal___________________________________________________ Department Chair_______________________________________________________ Area Chair_____________________________________________________________

Hendrix College Proposed Curricular Revision

Department: Foreign Languages Date: 9/30/2005 Proposed change (one sentence summary; please attach departmental catalog copy as it would appear with the proposed change.) The elimination of CLAS/HIST 301 (Greek Civilization) and CLAS/HIST 302 (Roman Civilization) and the creation of a new course CLAS 300: Ancient Society and Ancient Literature. Rationale for course within departmental and collegiate context. (Use separate sheet, if necessary) Students understandably want some exposure to the history and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. Both CLAS/HIST 301 (Greek Civilization) and CLAS/HIST 302 (Roman Civilization) have been popular courses on campus, with enrollments capped at 35-40 and with more students who want to take the courses being regularly turned away. But the demand for these courses needs to be balanced against the realities of a one-person Classics program: since John Farthing no longer teaches one or two of the Latin or Greek courses, I need to make the Classics program more functional as a one-person program. The new proposed course will be able to provide an overview of Greek and Roman literature and history in one course rather than two. Proposed code(s): Which, if any, course codes (Challenges of the Contemporary World, Domains, Capacities, Physical Activities) will this course fulfill? [Note that a listing of codes with approved criteria are listed in the Catalog and on the Hendrix website]. HP On a separate sheet of paper indicate which of the criteria are met by the course, and how the course meets those criteria. Please see attached. Does this replace a course? Yes--CLAS/HIST 301 and CLAS/HIST 302. This will be a permanent course. How often will the course be offered? Hopefully every year, but at least every other year. Prerequisite(s) and/or recommended prior courses: None. How will the change be staffed? by Rebecca Resinski Equipment, supply, and bibliographic requirements (Items and cost) none Will the above items be covered by a present budget? n/a Proposed date of implementation: Fall 2006 Signatures Initiator(s) of Proposal___________________________________________________ Department Chair_______________________________________________________ Area Chair_____________________________________________________________

Suggested catalog copy: Classics 300 Ancient Society and Ancient Literature A study of ancient Greek and Roman society primarily through literary sources read in English translation. Specific topics will vary by semester. Rational for HP coding: The description of the Historical Perspectives Learning Domain states, "Courses in this domain study the development of societies and cultures over time." Classics 300 will do just that: using primarily literary sources (supplemented with historical and archaeological materials) we will study how ancient Greek and Roman society developed and changed over the centuries.

Department: Biology Date: 10/7//05----DRAFT Proposed change (one sentence summary; please attach departmental catalog copy as it would appear with the proposed change.) Teach an experimental course as described: Biology 270 Biology of Sex and Gender (NS) An introduction to the evolutionary, chemical, physical, and biological basis of sex-determination and gender with discussion of the implications of this perspective to social and cultural issues. This course will not count toward a biology major or minor. Rationale for course within departmental and collegiate context. (Use separate sheet, if necessary) This course will be taught once (to see if it works). The course will be designed to supplement the Gender Studies curriculum and to count toward a minor in Gender Studies. The focus will be on readings, discussions, and understanding the Sociobiological perspective on the development of gender, sexuality, and sexual reproduction that culminate in human sexuality and sexual behavior. Thus, it will focus on a single major biological issue, sexuality, but cover many of the major biological concepts (scientific epistemology, evolution, genetics, physiology, reproduction, behavior, and culture.) It will be designed to meet a non-laboratory biological sciences requirement for students. It will be as scientifically rigorous as the other NS biological sciences courses that we teach. Proposed code(s): Which, if any, course codes (Challenges of the Contemporary World, Domains, Capacities, Physical Activities) will this course fulfill? CW (Challenges of the Contemporary World): This course should, as it says on page 17, "By confronting contemporary social issues, students prepare themselves to join a responsible world community----" In particular this course will directly address the "gender and sexual issues" explicitly listed on page 17, Does this replace a course? If necessary in order to staff it, it would replace a NS biology course for one semester. Yes, it will be a temporary course, but if successful it could be followed by a request to repeat it. There will be an entrance survey and an exit survey required for the students as part of an attempt to assess the value of the course to the curriculum. How often will the course be offered? Once, unless it proves to be a valued course. Prerequisite(s) and/or recommended prior courses: Gend 267, enrollment priority will be given to students who have already started toward a minor in gender studies and/or are upper-division students. How will the change be staffed? With current faculty member: Bruce Haggard. If necessary we might replace one non-majors course (NS) that semester in order to not have to hire an adjunct. Equipment, supply, and bibliographic requirements (Items and cost): None Will the above items be covered by a present budget? Yes Proposed date of implementation: Spring 2006-7 Signatures Initiator(s) of Proposal: _______________________________________,Bruce Haggard Department Chair: __________________________________________,Bruce Haggard Area Chair: _________________________________________ , Pradip Bandyopadhyay

CW The course will include a significant component addressing social issues such as the privacy of personal data, copyrights and patents, and the accessibility of Internet resources to the poor, illiterate, or handicapped. Such topics will be covered both on a factual level (e.g., how cryptography provides privacy, what copyrights protect) as well as a philosophical level (e.g., how should data sharing between organizations be limited, how can accessibility become broader). In addition to a number of class sessions addressing such issues, students will also work on a team project in which they select a specific contemporary issue, research it, and present their findings to other students. QS The most significant quantitative component of the course will derive from learning simple computer programming, and the algorithmic thinking that this entails. Students will complete a variety of assignments that include a programming component. Additionally, the course will include some analysis of numeric representation. Other potential topics that are quantitative are graph theory fundamentals (particularly in its relationship to the Internet and the Web), some statistical analysis (particularly with analyzing results from usability studies), and cryptography ; we anticipate that any instantiation of the course will include some such additional quantitative topics, but we are leaving the exact selection to the instructor's discretion.
