    FOREWORD

    The

    valuable

    materials which

    Professor Chiera is

    making

    accessible to

scholars for the first time in

    this volume

    of

    cuneiform tablets

    from

    the Nippur

    School

    need

    no

    introduction.

    The

    careful accuracy

    which

    characterizes

    his

    copies

    of

    such

    materials has already

    become well

    known

    to orientalists

    through

    his

    earlier publications

    of

    cuneiform sources.

    In this first

    volume of cuneiform records

    published

    by the

    Oriental

    Insti-

    tute,

    the editor

    is

    glad

    to

    announce

    that

the range of the Institute s

    publica-

    tions is

    being

    expanded

    to

    include such

    important

    classes of documents as

    the

    series

    here published, even

    though

    the

    originals may

    not

    belong

    to the collec-

    tions of the

    Institute. This policy

    is further

    evidenced

    by

    the coming publica-

    tion of

    the Egyptian

    Coffin

    Texts,

    although the

    vast majority

    of

    such

    texts

    are

    to

    be

    found

    in foreign

    museums.

    The

    interest

    which

    the Institute has

    felt in advancing our knowledge

    of

    the history of Western

    Asia is evident in

    the progress of

    its

    effort to produce

    a dictionary

    of

    Assyrian

    (better

    called Akkadian),

    based for

    the first time on

    all

    the

    known

    cuneiform records

    in that

    ancient Semitic

    tongue.

    In

    further

    response

    to

    this

    interest, the Institute

    is now beginning

    the

    publication

    of a

    series

    of

    cuneiform

    original

    texts in

    this instance,

    Sumerian ,

    to take a

    place

    side

    by

    side

    with

    its

    series

    of

    English

    translations

    of

    cuneiform originals,

    that

    is,

    the

    Ancient

    ecords of Assyria

    and

    Babylonia of which two

    volumes

    are

    already

    in

    print.

    The editor

    would

    take this opportunity

    to

    express his

    appreciation

    of the

    attitude

    adopted by the University

    Museum

    of the University

    of

    Pennsylvania,

    in

    permitting

    the Oriental

    Institute

    to publish these

    valuable cuneiform

    rec-

    ords.

    It

    is

    to be hoped that

    this

    instalment of

    such student lists

    will

    soon make

    it

    possible

    for

    some cuneiform

    scholar

    to restore in

    its entirety

    the encyclopedic

    summary

    of

    Sumerian

    scribal learning,

    of which

    this

    new

    volume

    contributes

    such

    an

    important

    part.

    PREF E

All the tablets here published form

    part of the Nippur

    collections now in

    the

    University Museum of the

    University of Pennsylvania.

    Work

    on

    this volume

    was

    begun

    many

    years ago-as

    far back as

    1913. But the gathering

    of the

    material

    was necessarily slow

    since new texts

    found

    from

    time to time necessi-

    tated constant

    changes

    especially

    substitutions

    of

    better written

    and more

    complete

    tablets

    for

    others

    which were less reliable

    and in

    a

    more

    fragmentary

    condition.

    About five years ago the

    pressure of new

    work made me

    turn

    my attention

    to

    other

    fields and this book was

    left lying in

    its

    present

    form.

    I

    am now very

    grateful to the

    Publication Committee of the

    University of

    Pennsylvania

    Muse-

    um for

    permission to include the

    volume among the

    Oriental Institute Publi-

    cations

    of

    the University of

    Chicago.

    When the

    work was

    first

    planned I had

intended to publish these texts in

    exactly the

    same

    way

    in which

    I published

    the Lists

    o PersonalNames

    but

    it soon appeared

    that this

    would involve such

    an immense expense of time

    as

    to

    make

    it

    impossible for

    me

    to attend to

    the publication of

    hundreds of equally

    important

    texts especially those

    dealing with Sumerian

    religion.

    I have there-

    fore

    abandoned

    the

    more ambitious

    project and with

    this

    volume

    I am giving

    to scholars

    as

    faithful

    copies of the original

    tablets as

    I

    could

    make.

    Besides

    the

    usual description

    of

    the

    tablets

    and a

    list of the duplicates

    which

    have

    not been thought

    worthy of publication I have

    included a list of parallel

    texts.

    This

    has been kindly

    prepared for me

    by Mr. Thorkild Jacobsen of

    the Oriental

    Institute and he is entirely

    responsible for his work.

    The pur-

    pose of this

    list of

    parallel

texts is to enable scholars to find

    out at

    a glance

    whether in this same

    volume are

    to

    be

    found

    tablets

    which

    give

    a parallel

    text

    to any

    tablet

    here published.

    No references

    are given

    outside

    of the

    present

    work.

    It

    is

    my pleasant

    duty to thank here first

    of all the Publication Committee

    of the

    University

    of Pennsylvania

    Museum

    for having permitted

    the

    publi-

    cation

    of this work.

    My gratitude goes also to

    Professor

    James H. Breasted

    the

    director

    of

    the Oriental

    Institute

    for

    having accepted the

    volume

    fo r

    its series. I

    must also

    thank

    Mr. Thorkild Jacobsen

    for having prepared

    the

    list

    of

    parallel

    texts

    and

    having offered

    to correct the proofs.

    INTRODUCTION

    With

very few exceptions, all the tablets here

    published

    form

    part of the

    material from

    the Temple School of Nippur.

This type of texts has already

    been described by

    me

    in the Introduction to the

    Lists

    of Personal

    Names

    from

    the

    Temple

    School of Nippur.

    In fact the Lists of

    Personal

    Names

    are, in a

    certain

    sense,

    a by-product

    of

    this

    work.

    They

    have been published

    apart be-

    cause

    it

    soon

    appeared

    that

    the

    material

    was

    too

    abundant

    for

    a

    single

    volume.

    Everything that

    has

    been said

    in that Introduction applies also

    to the

    tablets here published,

    and stands to this

    day with but a

    single change.

    The

    expression Nidaba-zag-sal op. cit., p.

    19) is not

    a

    colophon. It occurs again

    in

    some

    of our tablets, and

    it

    marks

    either the

    end

    of

    a text No. 15 and

    No.

    122)

or the end of a special

    topic

    No. 194, top of Col. I .

    The

    same expression

    occurs also in

    religious

    texts,

    though in

    stories

    dealing

    with

    creation

    or

    early

    myths the

    god

    Enki

    is

    substituted

    for Nidaba, and in

    hymns or epic writings

    the

    name

    of the god to whom

    the

    hymns are dedicated

    or

    whose

    exploits are

    recounted

    is often

    mentioned.

    Real

    colophons

    are

    never

    found in school

    texts. No. 121 has a

    note to the effect that

    it is

    the

    fifth tablet

    of a series

    called Nergal ...

    The tablet belongs to

    the Kassite period but

    has been published

    here

    because of

    its

    special importance. No.

    42 is a school

    text

    in

    the

    sense

    that it

    was copied

    by

    students

    for

    practice in

    writing,

    but

    in

    contents it

    is probably part

    of

    an account. It has been

    included here because

    of its very special

    character

    and of the important

    words it

    contains.

    The

    tablets

    here published

    contain, in general,

    lists of objects

    of the

    most

    varied character. Especially

    important are

    the

    names

    of gods

    and those

    of

    cities and countries.

    While

    the

    names

    included in these

    lists

    are in

    part already

    known from

    literature, still

    many of them

    are

    entirely

    new

    and as

    such form a

    very definite

    addition to our knowledge

    of

    Sumerian.

    Moreover

    the

    names

    are

    grouped

    in these

    lists

    according to some

    definite principle. So

    it

    happens

    that,

    if we know

    the

    meaning of some

    words in a list

    we have

    also

    very good

    ground

    for

    interpreting

    those which

    are entirely new.

    In geographical

    lists the position of

    the

    names

    is

    of

    the utmost importance.

    Much can be built, for

    our

    knowledge of Sumerian

    theology on

    the

    grouping of

    the names

    of

    gods.

    Of

    special

    importance in

    this

    respect

    is No. 122, Col. VII.

    The scribe

    had

    already

    written down all the names

    of gods preceded

    by the

    University

    of

    Pennsylvania:

    The University

    Museum,

    Publications of the abylonian Section,

Vol. XI No. 1 1916). Vol.

    XI, Nos. 2 and

    3, appeared in 1916 and 1919,

    respectively.

    SUMERIAN

    LEXICAL

    TEXTS

    determinative.

    In

    this

    last

    column

    he

    lists

    the

    foreign gods

    without

    determina-

    tive.

    Among these foreigners

    we

    find

    the

    well-known Ea and

    Ishtar.

    Another

    great advantage of

    these

    lists is that the writer

    attempted to make

    them exhaustive.

Every group of names be it

    of stones fields

    or officials is

    complete perhaps

    too complete.

    In some instances the

    list

    comes

    to resemble

    some of

    the modern student exercises

    the

    chief

    aim of which is

    to

    compose as

    many sentences as possible

    with

    any

    given

    noun.

    On this compare especially

    Nos. 9 obv.

    and 190 obv.

    But

    in general pupils had no

    interest

    in

    the

    subject

    matter

    of their

    exercises

    and many

    a time

    abandoned

    one subject for another.

    Thus

    in No. 170 Col. V

    the

    apprentice

    scribe after beginning

    to

    copy a list

    of

    different kinds

    of doors

    changed his mind

    and divided

    the column into

    two for a

    bilingual list.

    This

    is

    abandoned immediately

    after

    the first

    word.

    Compare also No. 244 rev.

    More common is a

    difference

    in contents between

    the

    obverse and reverse

    of

    the

    same tablet.

    Thus the

obverse of No. 112 contains a list of personal

    names that of

    No.

    189 has part of

    a

    hymn

    No.

    241 lists

    verbal

    forms and No.

    225

    gives sample

    contracts.

    Notwithstanding all

    this

    from

a close study of these school exercises

    we

    can

    reconstruct

    with

    a

    good deal of accuracy

    the

    original document from

    which

    all

    these tablets

    have

    been derived. A

    careful

    comparison

    of

    the texts

    containing

    the same subject

    matter

has been made and all duplicates

    weeded

    out. These

    are

    simply referred

    to by

    catalogue

    numbers in the

    list of

    duplicates

    on

    pp.

    14-16.

    Only texts needed

    for

    the reconstruction

    of

    the original have been

    copied and

    published

here. But even the published texts vary a

    good

    deal

    in value.

    Some

    are the

    work

    of

    pupils whose

    knowledge of

    writing was very

    limited

    and

    con-

    sequently

    are

    full

    of

    scribal errors. No.

    128

    which

    the

    scribe

    did

    not

    even

    care

    to

    complete is especially

    faulty

    in this respect.

    But

    even these unreliable texts

    are useful

    in that they

    give

    us

    the

    sequence; and their

    mistakes

    are

    corrected

    by parallel

    texts

    better

    written

    and more

    free from errors.

    In the nature

    of the case I have

    not

    tried

to point out mistakes in the copies.

    This work will

    have

    to

be done by the scholars who will

    use the

    texts. I

    need

    only

say that while copying the tablets had before me

    a complete list

    of

    all

    the variants. If

    errors or omissions

    occur

    in

    some

    copies

    these

    are

    found in

    the

    tablets themselves.

    In

    this volume

    we have sufficient

    material for the

    reconstruction

    of at

    least

    two-thirds of the original document

    in

    The University

    and

    it

    is

    to

    them.

    INTRODUCTION

    In

    this

    volume

    we

    have

    some

    texts

    which will

    help

    to form an idea

    of

    the

    contents

    of

    the missing

    portions.

    Compare Nos. 243

    and 248. Especially in

    teresting

    is No.

    243

    because

    it contains

    the simpler

    word-formations:

    a-ba

    a-ba-ba

    ba-a

    ba-ba-a ba-za ba-za-za which

    are followed by

    their

    Akkadian

    equivalents. Unilingual

    texts of the

    same type

    are Nos.

    7 rev. 206

    and

    238.

    The last question

    which needs to

    detain

    us a

    little is

    the

    relation

    of the

    tablets here published

    to the

    original

    from which they are

    derived. Some of

    the

    tablets are

    undoubtedly

    copied

    directly from

    the

    original.

    But

    in

    others

    occur

    some phonetic

    variants which could

    have originated only

    if the

    text

    had been

    dictated.

    In

    other instances the omissions

    additions and

    variants

    are too

    im-

    portant even for dictation. Such

    modifications occur

    especially in

    the vast

    amount

    of

    religious

    texts

    which

    originated in temple schools.

    The simplest

    ex-

    planation

    for these changes is that

    the

    pupils made

    up

    their texts from memory.

    Be

    this

    as

    it

    may

    the original

    document from

    which these

    tablets

    have

    been

    derived was

    so

    highly

    considered

    by the ancient Sumerians that

    copies of

    it are

    to be found

    in

    all

    schools by the side

    of

    standard

    works

    on religion and gram-

    mar.

    When

    the

    present

    tablets were

    written that is

    about

    2000

    B.c.

    this

    standard

    glossary was already

    being

    translated into

    Akkadian

    as

    the bilinguals

    here published testify.

    And even in

    late Assyrian

    times the scribes of Ashur-

    banipal

    made a

    round of the old

    temples to copy

    it

    for the

    royal library.

    It

    will

    be found that

    some

    of these tablets

    are duplicates of tablets

    found

    in the

    library

    of Ashurbanipal.

    With

    time and work

    tablets coming

    not

    only

    from Nippur

    but from Sippar

    Larsa Umma

    and

    probably

    many other cities

    will permit us to

    reconstruct

    in

    its entirety

    the

    standard work

    of Sumerian

    lexicographers.
