Everything here is so precise, stiff and formal-looking! Yes, it’s good looking and interesting with its pine tree border, snowballs and unusual tic-tac-toe-like motifs, but is it old? I doubt it very much. On Looking Closer The documentation verifies what my senses felt: this is not an early piece. It was woven in Berea College, Berea, Kentucky in 1938 for a Smithsonian Institution exhibit. The documentation says that it is a copy of an old coverlet, but the weave structure of the original is not specified. Perhaps the original was Summer and Winter, but we really don’t know. It’s a five-block pattern. Seven harnesses and 12 treadles were needed to weave it and the blocks combine prettily. T8206, Summer and Winter, woven in 1938, 5 block, 7H, 12 treadles, blocks combine, 30 epi, 30 Tppi, 30 patt ppi, Warp and T = white cotton – a little finer than 20/2 cotton, Patt = deep blue wool, harsher feel than the early cov- erlets, treadled as today’s coverlets, no half units, 45° angle, one panel, 24 ¼” w × 67” l, border, crossed pine trees, no fringes, perfectly woven.
