Results :

The study showed the impact of the various sulphur forms in regards to leaching. The ammonium sulphate trial showed very high losses due to it’s high solubility in water. The loss of ammonium sulphate was 70% in year one of the study.

Tiger 90CR Sulphur minimized leaching losses and also showed the greatest yields over the check and ammonium sulphate treatments.

Discussion:

The effect of leaching is dramatic with soluble nutrients on soils that are prone to leaching. With only two leaching events 70% of the ammonium sulphate was lost into the drainage water, while the Tiger 90CR sulphur released sulphur from it’s insoluble form to the plant available sulphate form throughout the growing season. Tiger 90CR losses were minimized with only 3.9 kg lost compared to 35.2 kg lost with the ammonium sulphate formulation

As a result of the effectiveness of Tiger 90CR to minimize leaching, the yield of the rye grass increased by 12.5% or 0.900 t/ha. Sulphur is a key component for several plant processes. One of the major roles is the formation of protein within the plant. Nitrogen requires the presence of sulphur to form protein. The uptake of nitrogen is also improved with increased sulphur fertility. Recent studies by the TSI have shown improved forage quality with sulphur applications. Increases in vitamin A, vitamin E and protein have been documented. The reduction of plant nitrates has also been documented with sulphur use.

As the sulphate form is readily leachable within the soil, sulphur within the plant is not mobile. As a result sulphur deficiencies will show up on the new growth on a plant. This is why sulphur needs to be available to the plant throughout the growing season. “Tiger 90CR Sulphur converts to plant available sulphate throughout the growing season, as the plant requires sulphur. If the sulphate was all available too quickly before the plant needs it, the loses to the Environment can be enormous. We have demonstrated for decades that Tiger 90CR not only provides an efficient season long sulphur source, but also is very good for our Environment. ” Jeff Ivan - Manager of Marketing & Business Development.
