ALAN GERRY – Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bethel Woods Center forthe Arts. Bethel Woods is a non-profit cultural organization at the site of the 1969 Woodstockfestival which inspires, educates and empowers individuals through the arts and humanities.Mr. Gerry, cable pioneer and entrepreneur, is passionate about where he lives and continuesto promote and support a wide variety of initiatives focused on economic development andimproving the quality of life in Sullivan County and the region.

CHARLES DEGLIOMINI - Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and Corporate Communications for the NASDAQ-traded Empire Resorts, Inc. a leader in racing,casino and gaming policy in New York State. On December 17, 2014 Empire’s wholly ownedsubsidiary, Montreign Operating Company, LLC was selected in a unanimous vote by the NYSGaming Facility Location Board as the sole Catskill/Hudson Valley Region casino eligible toapply to the NYS Gaming Commission for a Gaming Facility License.

PATRICK H. DOLLARD - President and Chief Executive Officer, The Center for Discovery. The Center is an internationally renowned provider of research, intervention and residential services for children and adults with developmental disabilities and medical complexities, including autism spectrum disorders. The Center pioneered the development of environmentally advanced health care and educational facilities such as The Discovery HealthCenter, and The Thanksgiving Farm CSA. The Center is developing a Regional Children’s Assessment Center and Skilled Nursing Facility and has a major project underway in Hurleyville.

DR. KARIN HILGERSOM - President, SUNY Sullivan. A two-year community college that’s a part of the State University of New York system. SUNY Sullivan provides programs and resources that educate, inspire and empower students and the broader community. Through excellence in teaching and learning, it aspires to prepare students for a diverse and interconnected world; and supports positive economic and social change within SullivanCounty and beyond. SUNY Sullivan is developing new curricula including one focused onNourishment Arts and Science, which intends to serve interested partners including The Center for Discovery.

DR. GERARD GALARNEAU - Chief Executive Officer, Catskill Regional Medical Center(CRMC). CRMC is a member of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS) dedicatedto providing the highest quality health care to residents of Sullivan County and neighboringcommunities at its main hospital campus in Harris and at Grover M. Hermann Hospital inCallicoon. CRMC has several new initiatives including the designation of a Primary CareDivision and Stroke Center.

RAMSAY ADAMS - Executive Director, Catskill Mountainkeeper; an organization dedicated to advocating for the Catskill region. Catskill Mountainkeeper works through anetwork of concerned citizens to promote sustainable growth, protect the natural resources essential to healthy communities and foster sustainable economic development. CatskillMountainkeeper was recently awarded a grant for $1.8 million to bring community solar to theHudson Valley, Catskills and Southern Tier regions of New York State.

He is an ordained rabbi, a professor inthe Humanities Division of Texas A&M University; and a specialistin tourism, economic development and the impact on crime andterrorism on the tourism industry. He is the founder and president of Tourism & More, Inc.


The Renaissance Awards honor and recognizeremarkable efforts to improve the communitiesin Sullivan County. This year’s RenaissanceAwards are given to the following volunteers ineach of these categories:

The Spirit Award - will be being given foroutstanding efforts in community service.

A Lieutenant Luis Alvarez – for his longterm work as Deputy Sheriff in the community;particularly with DARE, the NeighborhoodWatch, his public elected service and as a SullivanArc board member.

B Rock Hill Fire Department – for its outstanding volunteerism, playground and ballfield project and community events.

C Lou Monteleone – for his outstanding efforts and spirit helping children have joy dur-ing the holidays, for raising awareness and givingto so many community projects.

The Transformation Award - will be givenfor substantial renovation that demonstrates best

practices that result in a major aesthetic enhancement.

‘Go outside and get your handsdirty!’ Guest speaker Kirk Brown is a man of the earth

– and the theater

Kirk Ryan Brown, vice president of theGarden Writers Association, will be theguest speaker at the Sullivan Renais-

sance Annual Conference on Saturday, March 7at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Brown hopes his presentation, “CommunityLandscape: Art and Practice,” will inspire peopleto go outside and “get their hands dirty.”

“Community greening” is integral towardunifying people around environmental sustain-ability. “My desire is to get as many people aspossible to jump on the bandwagon,” he said.“‘Each one, teach one’ – that’s my philosophy.”

Based out of Orefield, Pennsylvania, Browntravels the country educating people about thehistorical roots of American horticulture and itstransformative power in our modern lives. Hisbook, “Landscape Contractor” is distributed tohigh school guidance programs throughout theUS and Canada.

An actor and playwright, Brown often putson a wig and costume and gives lectures andtours as historical characters John Bartram (anearly American botanist) and Frederick LawOlmstead (landscape architect and designer ofCentral Park in NYC).

Those forerunners’ names are part of thewebsites Brown maintains.

Recipient of the Pennsylvania Nursery andLandscape Association’s (PNLA) “GreenAchiever” award for advancing horticulture inthe state, Brown also serves as business managerfor Joanne Kostecky Garden Design, Inc.

According to Brown, in today’s technologydriven world, it’s easy to feel cut off and separatefrom nature. Fortunately, the solution is as sim-ple as going outside and planting a flower. Anongoing study at the University of Copenhagensuggests that gardening produces many of thesame benefits as meditation, helping to reducestress and promote general well-being.

“Opposable thumbs aren’t just for using smartphones,” said Brown. “The people who puttheir hands to the earth know how rewardingan experience it can be.”

So Brown continues to proselytize for thecause of horticulture, to “each one, teach one.”

The more we do that, Brown believes, we’llnot only transform our lives but also the worldaround us.

He has tried to draft his family andfriends into his gardening philosophy.

“Sometimes you have to physically drag themout,” said Brown. “There’s usually kicking andscreaming, and sometimes there might even beblood, but in the end they’re always grateful.”

Gardens that he has designed and installedhave been presented with “Outstanding DesignAwards” by PNLA, Perennial Plant Association,and Association of Professional LandscapeDesigners.

He has done keynote addresses for a widecircle of associations, including the AmericanNursery and Landscape Association Manage-ment Clinic, the Florida Landscape and NurseryGrowers Association and the SmithsonianInstitution. He has spoken to numerous gardenclubs, high school guidance programs, regionalnursery associations, churches, and service clubs.

For Asbury United Methodist Church, hehas written over 25 produced original dramas,comedies, and musicals with a number of

collaborators over the last 35 years. Several ofhis Christian musicals have been published andachieved a national audience for a variety ofproductions.

As an actor and playwright, Kirk hasproduced, directed, and designed over 100productions.

He has served on the board of Directors atCivic Theatre in Allentown, founded ACTS(Asbury Chancel Theatre Society) where hehas produced an original drama or musicalevery one of the last 25 years.

He resides in Orefield with his wife, Sara; twosons, Logan and Evan; and two cats, Nicco andPonch.

For 15 years now, Sullivan Renaissance haschallenged, encouraged and supported theefforts of grassroots volunteers to improve

their streets, neighborhoods, villages, and towns.We have helped to increase public awareness…the bar has been raised.

The response has been overwhelming. Thousands of people have donated literally hundreds of thousands of hours of their time andexpended almost nine million dollars in beautification and community revitalization [Seechart on page 15S]. All of this has been con-tributed for the public good.

The result is telling. Every community cannow point to beautiful spaces, public gardens andparks, and renovated buildings. Not only doesSullivan County look better, it also feels betterand is more welcoming to visitors. We have ourvolunteers to thank.

But now, it is time to double our efforts…there is still much work to be done and we needhelp with the heavy lifting.

Unlike any time in its recent history, SullivanCounty is in a unique position. A series of projects have begun that will move the county

forward economically, culturally and environ-mentally: Empire Resorts Inc., The Center forDiscovery, SUNY Sullivan, Bethel Woods Centerfor the Arts, Catskill Regional Medical Center,and Catskill Mountainkeeper. Representatives ofthese organizations will describe how their initiatives are catalysts for the continued transformation of Sullivan County as part of apanel discussion at the Sullivan Renaissance Annual Conference held on Saturday, March 7at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

In addition to the panelists, there are many additional projects moving Sullivan Countyahead. These include renewed development atthe Apollo Mall in Monticello, a health spa at theformer Kutshers Resort, a private school academy at the Delaware Valley School in Hankins, and a community center at the oldNarrowsburg School. There are many more examples of people and groups stepping forward to make a major difference in ourcounty.

Sullivan Renaissance and our volunteers needsubstantial help with bigger projects. There aremany major eyesores still to be removed. We

need help from those who are in a unique position to step forward in substantial ways totake this renaissance beyond the level that volunteers are able to accomplish on their own.Perhaps our public officials, major businesses, institutions, main street landlords, seasonal communities, homeowners, landowners, and investors coming into the county, could helpwith the removal of abandoned signs, identifyand resolve eyesores dotting major roadways,help with asbestos removal on derelict buildingsso they could be removed, donate the use ofheavy equipment for an hour or two to localrenaissance groups, and address dumpster use todisguise their visibility from the road, as just afew examples of help with heavy lifting.

We need everyone… all of the stakeholders…to work together to pull back the blight, that wemay reveal and protect the underlying beauty ofthe county. Please join with us today to make ithappen!
