Viewing Stones like bonsai should reflect or remind us of an image in nature. Relative to understanding mountain stones we have ample examples of what a mountain stone should look like in the Rocky Mountains all around us. What makes for a good mountain stone? What is a believable stone? What is the difference between distant and near view stone? Where to find great mountain stones that work well as an accent to a bonsai display? These are some of the topics that Paul Gilbert will cover in the February Program. Paul will share a naturalist view of mountain stones and will have examples of near stones and far stones and will show some examples of good and not so good mountain stones? Also if you have a viewing stone that you would like some evaluation of feel free to bring it to the program. Winter Silhouette For the February meeting members are encouraged to bring in a tree for our winter silhouette exhibit. Trees in winter silhouette are displayed without leaves, typically deciduous, highlighting their branch structure. This is a chance to display and observe the true beauty of the tree as the bare trunk and branches expose the characteristics of a fine bonsai; movement, taper, segmentation, compression, and ramification. Please bring a stand to display your tree. It isn't necessary to include an accent object. If you are going to bring a tree please email Tom Anglewicz to let him know the species of tree. President’s Message

1967 Dedication of

Takayama Park

MAYOR Tom Curry Presiding

Suiseki (水石) “Bonsai and viewing stones are closely related art forms, each reflecting a deep respect for

nature. While a bonsai is cultivated to evoke the qualities of a venerable old tree, a viewing

stone is usually displayed to suggest an aspect of the natural landscape, such as a distant

mountain or a waterfall. Thus, when these small-scale forms are viewed together in a

complementary arrangement, the whole of nature can be imagined.” Home Page – National

Bonsai Foundation

Our February program is on Suiseki and will be presented by our friend and past president Paul Gilbert. Joining him will be another Suiseki enthusiast Allan Hills who I believe collected the stone shown to the left in the Colorado Rockies. I saw it for the first time at our 2010 annual show and I just marveled at how much it complimented the show and the bonsai tree it was near. Paul was instrumental with bringing in some world-class Suiseki aka Viewing Stones and artists to the 2012 ABS/BCI Bonsai-Stone convention. In 1976, on American’s Bicentennial, Japan donated six priceless viewing stones to the National Bonsai Foundation that were placed on display at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, DC. Today, the museum has 105 stones from several countries and I’m confident that we will see many more viewing stones at our 2013 annual show, especially with such great RMBS enthusiasts like Paul and Allan leading the effort.

Our 2013 Visiting Artist program beginning with Harold “Hal” Sasaki was excellent, from the open lecture discussion morning and the workshop afternoon. I know I speak for all of us who have Hal as our friend and teacher. It is not about just becoming a better bonsai artist that we enjoy with Hal, it is our rich Colorado bonsai history, life lessons and the spirit of being a bonsai hobbyist. I am back to some of the Colorado basics Hal taught me when I first met him in 2005, more light, getting oxygen to my tree’s roots through dunking, picking that first branch and the placement of the bonsai in our individual homes by experimenting with their placement. It was

also nice of Hal to welcome our guest, Ms. Sachiko Nakahira who is with the Denver Sister Cities-Takayama Committee. She loved the Bonsai Orchid tree you presented to her as a gift. We will be working closely with Ms. Nakahira on the Takayama park project scheduled for April 20

th and led by Darell Havener. Thank you Hal for all that you have taught and continuing to

teach us!

The next visiting artist will be Michael Feduccia from Plant City, Florida. Michael’s bonsai sensei is Ryan Neil and he will be hosting a workshop on March 30th and will be presenting at our Tuesday, April 2nd meeting. Michael will also be the first RMBS Visiting Artist to work with DBG on a public event. This collaboration with DBG compliments RMBS’ community outreach goals. On February 28th, RMBS will have a presentation at Jared’s Nursery in Littleton on Bonsai. Please let me know if you would be interested with joining me that day to meet with some accomplished gardeners, who are interest in bonsai.

At our February meeting you should be able to purchase the pumice Larry Jackel was able to procure from the Wee Tree farm in Oregon. A 36lb bag is $14.00, a great bulk purchase and benefit for our membership. As always, thanks for all that you do Larry.

I am looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday, February 5th

, spending time with kindred spirits and learning for one another about bonsai, and now Suiseki!

Kind regards,

Patrick
