Message From TheGeneral Manager

By Rick Kelso, General Manager

It has been fairly hectic around the clubs over the last several weeks. Too many to put on paper but some of the major things:

Chef Remco leaving at the beginning of May and Robin being extremely busy with

helping Chef Justin transition into his new role here at Sugarmill Woods. So, I would like to Thank everyone for their cooperation and patience with the entire staff during this learning curve as Chef Justin gets accustomed to our operations and our expectations. Robin and the rest of the staff are continually helping Justin get use to the operations.

In the meantime, it's business as usual. Don't forget, the food and beverage minimum must be fulfilled by June 30th. As June is one of the busiest months, be sure and make reservations for dinner and any of the special events you want to attend.

The pro shop gift certificate (chits) expiration date is June 30. Remember that we can special-order many things, so check with one of the pro shop guys if there's something you want.

Now that summer weather is here, please be sure and check the forecast before starting play and keep an eye on the sky, especially during the afternoon when thunderstorms are more common. Also, be sure and drink plenty of water throughout your game, and wear light-colored clothing that doesn't tend to absorb as much heat.

Aerifying at Sugarmill Woods was done on May 22 and 23. Southern Woods will be closed on June 12 and 13 for aerifying. Tim and all the maintenance staff, has done a tremendous job in maintaining our facilities and it is greatly appreciated. It is this time of year when most of the important maintenance practices take place to be able to provide the conditions we have grown used to. Please make sure you check with the pro shop and/or the calendars of all upcoming maintenance schedules. Thank you for your cooperation.

I would like to send out a Congratulation's to the following individual for accomplishing one of the greatest feats in golf a Hole-in One. WAY TO GO and GREAT SHOT!!!

1.) Mike Schawbeck 4-18-17

2.) Ron Broadbent 3-28-17

Message From The Membership Director

By Ed Burfeindt, Membership Director

Just a reminder, it is that time of the year again when the Food and Beverage cycle is coming to an end. Make sure you get

into the restaurant for the delicious food and great service, and also to meet your

minimum requirement by June 30th. Anyone not meeting this requirement will be billed the remaining balance (+Tax) on their 6/30/17 statement.

I am setting up another Rays Baseball game trip for Wednesday September 20th against the World Champion Chicago Cubs!! More info to follow on that.

I have four Hole in Ones to report this month. The first belongs to Ron Broadbent who made his on March 28. He was playing Sugarmill Woods CC Oaks course and aced the 6th hole with his 9 iron. It was witnessed by playing partners Art Gennero, John Raymond, and John Bradley. The next Hole in One belongs to Michael Schwabek who made his great shot on April 18th at Sugarmill Woods CC. Playing Pine #4 from the Gold tees, he knocked in his 7 iron from 147 yards away. He mentioned it was the second time his ball ended up in the hole on his tee shot, the other time unfortunately (or fortunately) it was for par! His feat was witnessed by fellow competitors George Lentowicz, Bruce Whewell, and Don Archambault. The third Ace was made by Dean Moore at Southern Woods GC on April 25th. Playing the 17th hole from 110 yards, he jarred his shot using a 9 iron. The last Hole in One was made the very next day again at Southern Woods GC. Todd Wilson playing the 8th hole from 169 yards used his 3 iron to perfection. For Mr. Moore and Mr. Wilson it was their first, so we welcome them into the Hole in One Club!! Congrats to all!!

I ask that the Membership continue to help in our push for growth. Remember that “Word of Mouth” is the best advertising tool. Be proud of your club and always promote it. I will continue my work on getting our information about the club to as many different avenues as I can. Together we can continue to get bigger and better. Thank you for your help and support. Remember to follow us on Facebook as well as Twitter @smw_sw. Let's Make our Club Great Again!!

If there is anything I can help you with whether it's your golf swing, or any other concerns please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me at (352) 382-3838, ext. 10.

By Tim Gatz, Director of Golf Maintenance

The month of June is going to be very busy at both Southern Woods and

Sugarmill Woods. We are in full summer maintenance mode as we get all of our

aerification practices completed. The next few months are important since this is the time of year where we can accomplish our cultural practices and minor summer time projects.

At Southern Woods, we have our first core aerification on greens scheduled for June 12th and 13th. At this time, the course will be closed for these two days so that we can aerify, clean up cores, sand and roll. It typically takes about ten to fourteen days to completely heal. Vetticutting and topdressing shortly after aerifying greens will accelerate the recovery process. Fairways will also be aerified during the week of the 12th to relieve compaction and provide a better playing surface. Each time we aerify, we are providing a better growing environment for our turfgrass.

We have also planned a few small projects at Southern Woods. This includes improving a few tee and green slopes and possibly a few tee tops.

At Sugarmill Woods, we are going to aerify tees, fairways and roughs throughout the month of June. It will take a few weeks to complete as we have limited equipment and manpower.

Vertical cutting greens along with topdressing will continue this month as we try to keep putting surfaces in good condition.

This summer Oak course is closed so that we can water properly and improve putting surfaces. Since we do not have a working pump station on Oak, we have to pump from Cypress or Pine pumps. These two pump stations cannot support all 27 holes at night efficiently. With that said, we have the ability to water Cypress and Pine at night and Oak during the morning hours. This summer we are going to try to eliminate a majority of weeds on Oak greens. This will be a time consuming task, but the maintenance team will be on a weekly spraying program to slowly remove these weeds.

Please check with the pro shop for all maintenance projects and updates.

“Dr. Higgins was very caring and concerned about every aspect of my healing, understanding that I needed to be back to work as quickly as possible. I feel that I was totally prepared for my surgeries and the recovery phase. Now, six months later, I can say that it was worth everything I went through. I am so thankful to be the recipient of the God-given knowledge, skills, talent and compassion that Dr. Higgins used to give me back my life.” – Debbie O.

“I was very impressed with Dr. Michael Higgins, when he treated me for severe shoulder pain…so when my son broke his arm it was no surprise I took him to Dr. Higgins where he also received great care. Once again, Dr. Higgins and his staff worked their magic and his arm is as good as new!” – Valerie C.

“At the age of 22 I was diagnosed with deteriorating cartilage disease chondrolysis. Over the years the condition worsened to avascular necrosis. After repeatedly being turned away by other surgeons I was recommended to Dr. Michael Higgins…within six weeks after surgery I was walking without the need of any assisted devices.” – Kristin J.S.

Summer has pounced with its usual ferocity and our winter members have

fled to cooler climes. We are grateful for our brave year-round members who keep

us company on those long hot days!

The Cliff Ritchie Show last month was great as usual and the grand Mother's Day Buffet was a huge success.

Most of you know by now that Chef Remco has moved on and I am very happy to announce that I have replaced him as executive chef with Chef Justin. Chef Justin was Remco's sous chef and brings to our kitchen a wealth of experience and talent. Stop by and try one of his creative daily specials.

Game Night this month will be changed to Tuesday, the 20th; my apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause. Our Cocktail Cuties meet every Tuesday afternoon in the lounge from 3:30 pm. The usual weekly specials, along with the regular menu, will continue - Thursday is Prime Rib night for $18.95 and Friday's Fish Fry is $13.95. A special lunch menu

is served on Sundays from 11 am to 2:30 pm.

If you're ready to unleash your inner performer, Karaoke makes a comeback on Friday June 16th, featuring the fantastic Turner Camp Dave. This will be popular so book your table soon!

It's time to honor our Dads and Gramps at the special Father's Day Breakfast Brunch on Sunday June 18th. This buffet is just $12.95, featuring a fabulous breakfast buffet along with a few lunch items and will be served from 10 am to 1 pm.

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR JULY: Game Night in July will be on Tuesday 11th. As usual, it wouldn't be summer without our “Christmas in July” party complete with a traditional festive menu. From The Tennis Association

By Jack Stevenson, Membership Chairman

What is it about the game of tennis that attracts us? At the recreational level, the social aspects and fun of playing a spirited game with friends, and the exercise that goes with it, are the main attractions. Whatever your reason for playing tennis, you will increase your enjoyment by taking a positive approach to the game. Surround yourself with positive people, think positive thoughts, and increase your self-confidence by focusing on and repeating the mantra “I

can do it!” Above all, if you want to improve your level of play, remember to relax, have fun and enjoy the game!

Attached are some photos from our past tennis events. Recognize these old-timers?

Please give a warm welcome to new Tennis Association members Else and Finn Berner, Rosario Hafner and Greg Dowgwillo, Carla and Jerry Chitwood, Janet and Larry Kent, Dale and Donna Cornett, and Bobby and Lena Dalton.

Tennis Traditions Day

The annual event originally scheduled for Saturday, May 20th has been moved

to Saturday, July 8th at 8:30 a.m. There was a few problems with having the event in May so we moved it to July.

We have had it previous years in July. Sign up at the Pro shop at Oak Village.

“Traditions Day” is basically Old time tennis. Players use an old wood racquet and wear tennis whites only. Years ago most tennis clubs only allowed white clothing on the court. Wimbledon still enforces that tradition even to this day.

Swimming Pools

With the summer here and school out, its pool season. This means increased activity and usage at both the Oak Village pools and the Cypress Village pool at the golf courses. As a member, we ask you to sign in at these locations with your memberships number and name. The staff at both locations have updated membership lists to check on who's there and using the pools. Please bring your member cards with you when visiting the pools.

Oak Village

Playday (April 29)

Look in this months issue for the pictures of our Tennis Playday which took place on Saturday, April 29th. The next Tennis Association event is Saturday, July 22 which is the “summer social”.

The next Tennis “Playday” will take place on Saturday, September 16th.

Summer Junior Camps

Weekday Junior tennis camps are forming now during the week. Age groups are forming with no more than 6 to a group for 1.5 hrs of instruction. Cost depends on how many in each group. Contact Rick for specifics on these camps and days offered. At press time, they were taking place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Men's USTA 55+ Super Senior Team

Recently our team qualified for the sectionals in Orlando at the NEW USTA training center and headquarters. They played 3 different teams from around the state. They played VERY well and came within 4 points of making it to the Finals. We were sooooo close. Maybe next year!

Congrats to the guys who qualified and played in Orlando. Mike Brown, Mike Tringali, Domenick Testi, Barney Hess, Jim Lavoie, Dave Demontfort, Craig Tammen, Richard Fields, and Eric VanDenHoogen.

Sugarmill Woods Men’s Golf Association

By Bob Strausser

The weather here at Sugarmill Woods continues to be outstanding. Middle of May and we have highs in the 80's with low humidity, beautiful for golf. Enjoy

while we can for the dog days of summer are around the corner.

Snowbirds

For all who will migrate north or wherever, have a beautiful and safe summer. See you all in the fall.

Reminder

Don't forget you must spend your Pro Shop credit (chits) and your food and beverage minimum by June 30th. The Pro Shop can tell you how many chits you have which include your MGA winnings.

Important Note

There is substantial effort by MGA administration in setting up pairings, scorecards, changes, etc. for MGA Thursday play. Members who sign up and do not show up or call to cancel are charged the $3 tournament fee. Please take note of this for it plays havoc in trying to coordinate changes 10 minutes before tee time and it is not fair to the team who is waiting for a no-show.

Special Events

The next few months are a slow time for MGA special events. Watch your emails and newsletter for “Mark Your Calendars” which will be sent out in August announcing the MGA Special Events in the fall.

Southern Woods Men’s Golf Association

By Gary Mosey,

Once again, spring has been turning into summer. Many of our “snowbird” members

have returned north. Weather conditions, as I am sure everyone knows, have been unusually dry this year. We know it has been hard on the course as a result, but Tim and his team have done a great job keeping things in great shape. There is certainly something to be said about hard fairways (unless the rough/trees/water are one's continuing challenge) and very quick greens.

We all look forward to an interesting and competitive SW MGA summer season. Hope to see y'all in the coming weeks. Let's all hope for rain!

The Practice Tee

By Ed Burfeindt, PGA Professional

In one of my past articles I discussed playing in the cold weather and how to prepare for it. Well since summer is

quickly approaching, and it has already been pretty warm here in Florida, I thought

we could discuss playing in the heat. One of the most important things to remember is to conserve your energy. We will discuss 5 ways to help you accomplish this.

The first thing to remember, and you would think it was pretty obvious, is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids during the round is important, but actually is not enough. You should really start your fluids at least 1 day prior, and avoid caffeine and alcohol. On those hot days you will lose fluids from your body quicker than you can replenish them.

The second piece of advice is to wear loose, light colored clothing preferably with the moisture wicking material. The worst feeling is your shirt sticking to your body and having to peel it off after your round. This moisture wicking fabric pulls moisture from the body to the exterior of the shirt where it can evaporate more easily. Another piece of clothing you should never be without is a hat. A baseball style hat would do fine, but one of those bucket hats with the big brim that goes all the way around your head is better. It will help you avoid sunburn, but also help you maintain that energy level of yours.

A third precaution to take is to wear sunblock on your exposed skin. I would tell you that at least 50 SPF wouldn't ever be too much. They now also offer clothing that has sun blocking properties in it. Wearing a long sleeve shirt with the right materials, would give you a good amount of protection from the sun.

The fourth thing to remind yourself is to eat before you play. It is best if you eat light, but make sure you eat something. When you want to maintain your concentra-tion and energy, starving yourself is not going to help. I made this mistake many, many years ago when I took my Player Ability Test. I was nervous that day and decided not to eat anything before I went out to play. Not a good decision on my part because mid-way through the round I started to get woozy in the heat.

The last portion of advice for you on one of these hot days is to make sure you still warm up before your round. I

27

would suggest that your warm up be light so you don't zap too much energy.

All of us golfers know that Mother Nature is a big part in playing the game. Whether it's hot or cold, if you prepare yourself before battle you will you definitely enjoy your day a lot more.

If you need help with any part of your game, send me an email to [email protected] or call (352) 382-3838, ext. 10 to set up a lesson. I look forward to seeing you next month on The Practice Tee.

Join the Alliance. Come to our meetings, hear the experts, speak to groups, help at festivals, help with fundraisers, help with mailings, attend commission and agency meetings and speak out to protect the Homosassa! We meet at 7 p.m. on

ndthe 2 Thursday of the month at the Homosassa Civic Club.

The Save the Homosassa River Alliance has been organized to inform citizens about all significant environmental issues affecting the Homosassa River System. The goal is to help restore, protect and perpetuate the native integrity of the related springs and rivers.

The Homosassa River is a 7-mile long fresh water river that leads through an incredibly productive estuary to the Gulf of Mexico. Here the fresh water from the springs mixes with salt water from the Gulf providing a nursery for many fish and other animals. If the water is polluted or too salty, then the young and fragile fish, shrimp and crabs will not live. High quality fresh water from the springs flowing into the river is essential.

Any factor causing environmental degradation and any means to aid in restoration is appropriate for the attention of the Alliance. We are a 501c3, non-profit organization and our game plan is to provide education and information at schools, at State Parks, at festivals, thru presentations, thru brochures, thru newsletters and thru the media. We provide a forum for citizens and experts to discuss environmental issues. We work with County Commissioners and planners, with SWFWMD and with the Florida DEP to help develop and apply the best management practices.

Welcome to the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association! Want to meet others with an interest in the great game of tennis and to make friends with some wonderful people? Join the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association!

Towards this goal, the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association (SMWTA) issues a tennis roster that includes a listing of current officers and players as well as a schedule of yearly events. By joining the Tennis Association, you are placed on the membership roster and will also receive e-mail correspondence to keep you up-to-date on other members and tennis events.

The Association also organizes several "Playdays" a year for its members, round-robin mixed doubles events, which serve to bring players together. Lunch follows, sometimes as a delightful covered-dish affair beneath the trees at Oak Village. Guests of members are welcome to play and join in the festivities. Non-playing family members are welcome to cheer on the players and join us for lunch. A portion of your dues goes towards providing Playday prizes, courtside refreshments, photos, etc.

The SMWTA also helps its members in time of need. When a member or a non-playing spouse is down and out, our Sunshine Committee is there with a card or goodies to help cheer them up.

Another primary function of the SMWTA is to provide representation to Sugarmill Woods Country Club management in matters of concern to tennis players. By joining the Association, you add your voice to those with similar tennis-related concerns.

The Tennis Association has also donated items to improve the tennis facilities. In the past, we have provided such items as the bleacher seats and shoe washers at the Sugarmill Woods tennis courts. In December of each year, a gala tennis banquet is held at the Sugarmill Woods Country Club. A portion of your dues goes towards appetizers, music, awards, photos and mementos.

By joining the Tennis Association you get all of the above benefits, plus an organization of volunteers that helps make your tennis community a better place. You also get involved with a wonderful group of people who enjoy the great game of tennis. Priceless!

To join up, place your $15.00 dues, which covers everyone in your immediate household, in the Oak Village drop box located in the shelter between Courts 2 and 3.
