The busy season is in full swing, which means the next couple of months will be extremely busy with many golf functions,

tournaments, and many different types of food and beverage functions for all the

members to enjoy. Please check the bulletin boards, the calendar in the newsletter and make sure you check your email as we will be sending out all the information on these events via email in the attempts to keep you up to date. If you are not receiving emails from us, please call Jordan Le Meur, the Membership Director at (352) 559-7106 to update your email address.

Robin and Chef Joe have been doing an AWESOME and AMAZING job with the food and beverage operation. I have so many members and guests coming up to me weekly and telling me that the food quality and service of Sugarmill Woods Restaurant has never been better. The number of members and guests that are dining at the club has never been higher. With this success we ask that you make reservations for dinner, for this will help us provide the members and guests with the best service and quality of food you have been becoming to expect. Thank you for your continual support. Also, please remember the 72-hour cancellation policy for all special functions. Those canceling after the 72-hour cancellation period will still be charged.

We all have become very accustomed to certain tee-times and pace of play over the last few years. Now that we are starting to slowly grow and the course is becoming busier, we don't need members yelling or telling others on the course that they are playing slow, hitting into the group in front of you or that they drove a cart in the wrong area. Please call the Pro Shop, and we will have someone come out and see what is going on. We are trying to create a fun and enjoyable environment for all members and guests that play at our clubs. A friendly and pleasant environment we create, the easier it will be to attract new members to our wonderful clubs.

The Pro’s Corner

By David Knighton, Head Golf Professional

My first piece of advice for relative beginners reading the slope of greens is to double whatever break you see.

Higher handicappers rarely play enough break, and resort to either hitting putts too

hard, missing routinely on the low side of the hole, or both. This is a critical mistake if it's happening with regularity.

When you miss a putt on the low side of the hole, at the very end of the putt's travels, the ball is rolling away from the hole. Every inch that the ball rolls is an extra inch you'll have to deal with on your next putt. Conversely, a putt missed on the high side of the hole is moving toward the hole, generally leaving you with much shorter return putts.

In terms of reading greens, I suggest removing your blinders and first take a look at the entire green complex and the general lay of the land. I would say just take an extra moment to think like a golf course architect. Most greens are not designed to retain water, but to drain water into sensible locations. Notice low-lying areas, drainage areas, water hazards, and other areas where it might make sense for an architect to drain the water from the green. This will give you a general pulse on the overall slope of the green.

As we take a look at your putt more specifically, it's important to note that break is a function of the speed the ball is traveling. Generally the ball is traveling its fastest immediately after leaving the putter face and moving it's slowest toward the end of the putt. This means that X amount of slope will have much more effect on the roll of the ball at the end of the putt than in the beginning of the putt. To this end, you should assign more value to slope around the hole than the slope near the putt's starting point.

If time permits, take a walk over and look at the putt from behind the hole. As you crouch down, the circular hole appears to be more like a slit, or even a line on the green. Notice if this line is horizontal or if it appears to be at an angle of some kind. This will provide a strong indication of the slope around the hole.

If you're playing on bent grass, or generally in cooler climates, then grain will not be much of a factor. If you're putting on greens with Bermuda grass or with other heavier, grainy types of grass, take a look at the lip of the hole itself. Often, especially as the day progresses, one half of the hole will remain clean while the other half of the hole appears to be beaten up. If this is the case, this tells you that the grain of the grass is growing from the clean side to the dirty side of the hole. This happens because of the way cups are cut, with half the hole having trimmed the blades of grass, while with the other half, the roots of the grass

have been severed.

As you walk around your putt, also notice the coloration in the grass. Lighter shades of green are down grain while darker shades of green are into the grain. This occurs because of how sun light reflects, or doesn't reflect, off the blades of grass depending on your vantage point. In simple terms, consider the effects of grain on your putts much like the effects of wind on your full shots. Putts into the grain will be slow, while putts down grain will be fast. Water drainage has a large effect on the direction of grain, so this can provide yet another clue as to the slope on the green.

Once again, only if time permits, you might take a look at your putt from a side angle as well. Stand on the lower side of the putt for this, as I believe you'll see more detail than you will from the high side. This will give you an idea of the uphill versus downhill nature of the putt and help you with speed control. Once you read your putt, be sure to play enough break, select a starting line and treat every putt as if it were straight.

In summary, most players don't account for enough break on the putting green. Missing on the high side of the hole will help to leave you shorter return putts than missing on the low side. When reading greens, take a moment to think like an architect and look at the overall landscape consider-ing water drainage. The amount a putt will break is a function of the speed that it is traveling. If time permits or while other are playing, take a look around the hole because this is where the ball will be traveling slowest, and perhaps breaking the most as it loses speed. Look at the hole itself and the coloration of the grass to get an idea of the direction of the grain. Once you have your read and your line, set up squarely and treat every putt as if it were straight.

Give some of these green reading tips a try and just maybe your putting will start to improve. If not and you're still in need of any help, feel free to ask myself or Kevin for any help. See you next month on the practice tee.

Oak Village

By Rick Scholl, Manager & Director of Tennis

Tennis

The month of February is definitely the busiest month on the tennis courts. Ladies

League play is in full swing three days a week. Complete schedules are posted on the outside bulletin board near Court 6. In addition, there are two Senior USTA teams playing on Saturdays. A Ladies 3.5 55+, and a Men's 4.0 55+ team. Those schedules are posted also on the bulletin board.

Men's Monday-Wednesday Tennis

Since last summer there has been a steady decline in the participants in the morning Men's Days. I’ve heard many reasons as to why and what to do about it. I believe the number 1 reason is that its too early. Many do not want to get up and get to tennis by 8 am. As a result of this, many men players have been setting up their own games in the afternoon. This is fine and ok to do, but with such a small

club as far as tennis members it really depletes the morning number of players. What to do about it? I think maybe trying a start time an hour later might work?

Maybe we should organize a similar ladder system for the afternoon play? That would totally change up Men’s Tennis at the club. There is NO right or wrong answer here. I'm looking for suggestions from the tennis membership as well.

Playday February 15th

The first playday of 2020 is scheduled for Saturday, February 15th at 8:30 am. We will have a few hours of Mixed Doubles and a pizza picnic after under the trees. Stick around after pizza because there will be a Men's USTA home match vs The Villages at 1:30 pm.

Tennis Instruction

We have tennis lessons with USPTA Certified Rick Scholl. The private lesson rate is $40 hour and the half hour lesson is $20. Group clinics available ranging from $10 an hour to $15 depending on number of participants.

Sugarmill Woods Ladies’ Golf Association

By Joanne Tuxbury

I am so proud to be a part of our generous community. Our community steps up to assist those in need in many ways. The “Hitting for Hospice” tournament on Wednesday January 15th was a huge success due to the generosity of many members and local businesses. Hitting for Hospice Tournament Chair, Iris Brimlow, and her support team of Deb DeGrio, Bonnie Demianczyk, Lorraine Dayton, Susie Hornbeck, Lois Becker, and Karen Hall were able to put together a well-run, successful tournament. The tournament netted $4,135.00 for VITAS Healthcare, our donor recipient this year. Director of Marketing for VITAS, Jennifer Bosak, accepted the check and shared some information about the services VITAS offers. All funds raised and donated remain here in Citrus County.

Snowbird sightings have increased….it's great to have you back! During the past month, the Southern Woods LGA held 4 events.

Our first, on December 19th, was the annual Holiday Team Game/Luncheon, planned by Lorraine Dayton and Janice Doyle. A delicious lunch was followed by a short meeting. The clubhouse looked festive and LGA Chair, Sherrie Ross, thanked Pauline Gerbino, who had coordinated the decorating team.
