Message From The General Manager

By Rick Kelso, General Manager

I would like to take this moment to say thank you to all the entire Staff for all their hard work and endless hours put in during the

2018 Men's Member Guest. The Event was a huge success! Great job!!!To the Men's

Member Guest Committee it was all the meetings over the entire summer, coming up with all the activities for all the participants, making sure all the details were covered, and then going out to all the local businesses to make sure that we had enough sponsorships to make this event all it is. Thank you!!! Your efforts did not go unnoticed, as this was the best Member Guest!!! Finally, I would like to thank all the Members and their Guest for participating in this great event!! It is you and your guest that make putting this event on so special!! Thank you for your participation.

With the busy Season in full swing, and the membership growing, there are a few items we need to cover to help us to make sure everyone's day at the club enjoyable. First of all, we ask that all those who are in charge of their games that they make only the tee-times they are going need. We understand that sometimes people get called out of town, get sick or just can't play that day. Please call and cancel the extra tee-time as early as possible, so the pro shop staff will be able to fill that time. Your cooperation on this matter is greatly appreciated and needed. Secondly, as we continue to grow and get busier the pace of play will continual to be a topic of conversation. Here are a few things you and your group can't do to help with the pace of play.

Member and their guests should play READY GOLF, to ensure everyone's day at the club is enjoyable. So here are a few helpful hints:

1. Be at ball, ready to hit when it's your turn.

2. Set time target for round: 4 hours or less at both Sugarmill Woods and Southern Woods.

3. Mark ball's flight with a background object.

4. Note distance, yardage, wind, and obstructions BEFORE reaching ball.

5. Think about club selection BEFORE reaching ball.

6. Take 2 or 3 clubs to ball.

7. Limit practice swings to odd lies. Let one practice swing do.

8. Start moving toward the ball immediately after it's hit.

9. Study line of putt WHILE OTHERS ARE PREPARING TO PUTT.

10. Limit search for lost balls to five minutes. Hit provisional ball before searching (Rule 27).

11. Consider other options for unplayable lie besides returning to spot of previous stroke (rule 28).

12. Invite others through when back up develops or hole opens up ahead.

Remember it only takes ONE person to make everyone's day

at the golf course less than enjoyable. We need everyone's help, so everyone can enjoy this tremendous facility to the fullest.

With 2018 coming to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member for your support and participation in all we attempt to do at the clubs to make it better and is what makes our clubs the best!! THANK YOU!

Heading into 2018, it will become very, very important to increase the membership levels. Social members, family full golf memberships and all the membership in between - it will be our goal to increase them all. No matter what happens or what we do as a club going forward, our best form of promotions is the membership. It is the members who welcome new homeowners into our neighborhoods, and we need all members inviting these new residents of our community out to dine, play golf, play tennis or just talk about all the fun things we do at the club. This is one of the most important ways of promotion. It speaks more to potential members than anything we can do at the club. All of the members have been extremely involved in promoting our clubs in the past and I know that will not change because all of you love these clubs as much as we do. I'm just asking all of you to keep up the great and positive promotions of our clubs. THANK YOU for all you do!!!

The Sugarmill Woods Golf Shop will be open till 12:00 pm on December 24th and will be CLOSED ALL DAY December 25th.

The Southern Woods Golf Shop will be open till 12:00 pm on December 24th and will be CLOSED ALL DAY on December 25th. January 1st, 2018 at Southern Woods will be hosting the Hangover Open. For additional information, please check the bulletin board at Southern Woods or the Pro shop for additional information.

I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to Mike and Nancy Theodore for all the years they have planned and ran the Hangover Open. It has become a huge annual event for everyone to enjoy and get rid of their hangovers. Thank you for all you do to make the club a fun place for all members and guest.

Happy New Year everyone!!!!!!

January 1st, 2018 Sugarmill Woods will be closed.

This month I thought I would keep it light and share some golf humor I came

across. I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season, and

also a Happy and Healthy New Year!! Thanks from your Golf Staff at Sugarmill Woods CC and Southern Woods GC!!

The Rules of Golf

These rules of golf are for good players whose scores would reflect their true ability, if only they got an even break once in a while. I'm sure some of you will be able to relate to these.

1. A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled in the rough. Such veering right or left frequently results from friction between the face of the club and the cover of the ball, and the player should not be penalized for the erratic behavior of the ball resulting from such uncontrollable mechanical phenomena.

2. A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. Hitting a tree is simply bad luck and has no place in a scientific game. The player should estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there, preferably from atop a nice firm tuft of grass.

3. There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course somewhere and eventually will be found and pocketed by someone else. It thus becomes a stolen ball, and the player should not compound the felony by charging himself with a penalty stroke.

4. In or near a bunker or sand trap, a ball rolling back toward the player may be hit again on the roll without counting an extra stroke or strokes. In any case, no more than two strokes are to be counted in playing from a bunker, since it is reasonable to assume that if the player had time to concentrate on his shot, instead of hurrying it so as not to delay his playing partners, he would be out in two.

5. If a putt passed over the hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity holds that any object attempting to maintain a position in the atmosphere without something to support it must drop. The law of gravity supersedes the law of golf. (Same thing goes for a ball that stops on the brink of the hole and hangs there, defying gravity. You cannot defy the law). (Same thing goes for a ball that rims the cup. A ball should not go sideways. This violates the laws of physics).

6. A putt that stops close enough to the hole to inspire such comments as, "You could blow it in" . . . may be

blown in. This rule does not apply if the ball is more than three inches from the hole, because no one wants to make a travesty of the game. See you NEXT YEAR!!!!

If you need help with your game, send me an email to [email protected] or call (352) 382-5996 to set up a lesson. I look forward to seeing you next month on The Practice Tee.

Come join the “Sugarmill Cocktai l Cuties” on Tuesday in the Lounge,

starting at 3:30 pm every Tuesday. In addition to everyday 2 for 1 drinks, there will be a Tuesday only specialty Drink 2 for 1. If you are looking for some mid-week fun, this is the group to join! See you Tuesday in the Score’s Lounge.

Welcome back to some of the returning snow birds and to the participants of the Men's Member-Guest! A reminder that January 1st is coming up soon, which

means that the New Year's Resolutions will start. Why not start them now? Our

Fitness Club runs 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. If you already have a Golf or Social Restaurant membership, then you can add on the Fitness Club for an additional $35 per month plus tax. If you would like to take a tour of the facility or if you would like to add this to your account, please contact me at (352) 559-7106.

I would like to remind everyone to update their phone numbers, email addresses, and postal addresses whenever they change, as I believe communication is key. Daily I run into an account with a phone number that is outdated or a letter that gets sent back as undeliverable. Having the correct and updated information is very important, as it allows us to contact families directly when problems arise or returning an answer to a question. Please email me any changes to your account that are needed to [email protected]. A huge THANK YOU to those of you that do this already!

UPCOMING EVENTS: The Annual LGA Cookie Sale will be held on December 20, 2018 within the lobby at 10 am; right next to my desk. Come stock up on some homemade cookies for the holidays!

If you have any suggestions or concerns, please feel free to call me at my direct line (352) 559-7106, or e-mail me at [email protected].

Director

Message FromGolf Maintenance

By Tim Gatz, Director of Golf Maintenance

Last month at Southern Woods we applied our winter over seed to all tee and green surfaces. This practice should give

us good playing conditions for the next few months. As the over seed starts to

mature, we will slowly start to lower the height of cut on greens. It will take a few weeks to get our green speeds back to where they normally are for this time of year.

Since our winter over seed is done and our Bermuda grass growth is slowing down, we have the next few months to address some detail items throughout the course. This includes removing dead trees and removing any low lying limbs that might improve the health of our turf. Cartpaths will also be edged as well as adding mulch to a few select beds.

At Sugarmill Woods, we are going to pre-emerge all fairways and rough areas. This should limit weed activity in these areas. An all organic fertilizer application will be made on all fairways and tees. We will also continue to apply our liquid fertilizer to both tees and greens to keep good color and consistent growth.

Please remember that it is important to keep carts on cart paths at ALL times around tees and greens. Since our cooler weather is here our Bermuda grass cannot recover from cart traff like it does in the summer months. Wear patterns will develop quickly this time of year and recovery won't happen until next spring. Also, please repair ball marks and fill divots as you play your round. These items will certainly help our golf courses.

Nine Hole Swingers

I hope that everyone had a good Thanksgiving! Our group has decided to cancel our Invitational in January. We are a small group and due to some illnesses of

our members it was decided to postpone for a year. I thank all of the members for their participation. We are always open to new members of any skill level to join us. We are a fun group and take golf seriously but not hoping to go on the "O Ghee Tour" wishing all a healthy and safe holiday season.

Bridge Club

The SMW Bridge Group plays at the club on the second Tuesday of the month at 9:00am for about three hours. We welcome bridge players who would like to have a pleasant time with friends and neighbors. Playing partners are randomly assigned and change after four hands per table. The donation is two dollars with many payouts for fabulous prizes (actually, restaurant credits). Our next bridge gathering is December 11th.

If you would like to join us, please call Claire Sickel or Hank Robinson at 239-560-3969.

November was certainly busy in the clubhouse. A big thank you to all

members that attended the many events. Men's Member Guest was a great

success, thank you to all who participated and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Kudos to the Member Guest Committee and my amazing staff for a job extremely well done. Also, my heartfelt thanks you the ladies that decorate the clubhouse for the holiday season – and the fabulous job they do year after year!

As December is a very busy month in the clubhouse, I ask that you please make reservations for dinner to ensure that we give you the service that you deserve.

Time to break out those jingle bells and best festive outfits for the Club's Christmas Party on Friday, December 14th. The fun begins with cocktails at 5:30 followed by dinner at 6:00 and music for dancing. The cost is $23.95 pp.

Due to the number of member parties this month, we are unable to host a Game night. The regular weekly specials, along with the dinner menu, are Prime Rib on Thursday for $18.95 and Fish Fry on Friday for $13.95. A lunch menu will be served on Sundays from 11 am to 2:30 pm with some interesting breakfast special features. “Cocktail Cuties” meet in the lounge between 3 and 5 pm every Tuesday to sample the week's cocktail selection. Come along for some fun, frivolity and fellowship!

We always save the best for last. The final event of the year has you dining and dancing your way into 2019 at the Gala New Year's Eve Party on December 31st in fine style. Featuring an OPEN BAR all evening, appetizers, dinner and dessert; there will also be music, dancing, party favors and a champagne toast at midnight. This is THE most fabulous event of the year at a cost of just $74.95 ++pp. Cocktails start at 7 pm with dinner served around 8:30.

As this year draws to a close, I would like to join with my entire staff to thank you and to wish you all a very special holiday season celebrating with friends and family. Stay safe and have a happy and healthy New Year.

Upcoming events for January: next month's Game Night is January 8th.

Please Note: No-shows for all events will be charged to the account of member reserving if not canceled within 72 hours of events.

You may call the restaurant direct for reservations on 382-5645. Email me at [email protected] or call me anytime if you have any issues.

Happy holidays to the membership! We're in full swing in the restaurant this month. It's a very busy time with many, many holiday parties, banquets, and luncheons. Friday, December 14th is the Annual Sugarmill Woods Holiday Party: featuring Prime Rib, Chicken Florentine and Mango-Glazed Fish. We have the New Year's Eve Banquet on December the 31st; it features Filet Mignon and Lobster Surf and Turf with plenty of music and dancing. These events are already almost fully booked up, so don't miss out!

Tis The Season

Thanksgiving is behind us, and we’ve given thanks for everyone and everything in our

lives, so its that time of year to celebrate a special birthday. From my staff, we'd like to

wish all the members a Merry Christmas! It’s time to give and to be with loved ones enjoying the season. Yes, we have to pretend down here in Florida that its cold most Chrismas's. Somehow with all the lights and decorations around its not difficult to get into the spirit of Christmas!

Tennis Traditions Day

Although the November event had to be postponed due to a light sign-up, I would like to try it again in 2019. The date for it has not been set as of now, but look for it sometime before summer. It really is a fun event, using the old wood racquet for a morning! One idea for this event is to have it on a Friday morning instead of Saturday. Anyone have any comments or thoughts please get in touch with me.

Tennis Court Reservations

This is a request from the Tennis Department: Please when you want to come down and take a clay tennis court during “off peak” times, check into the office and let a staff member know what court you would like. This way you're not taking it away from someone or a group, league, etc. that has reserved them. Thanks you for adhering to this policy.

one of the club’s

most prestigious and

profitable

events of the year.

And Village Cadillac of Homosassa was again the title sponsor. For the

eighth

straight year, this

local business has provided financial support, as well as a number of golfing supplies, which are given as raffle gifts to the participants.

This annual three-day tourney was nearly sabotaged by Mother Nature, with 100 percent chance of rain predicted the week before the tournament. By the time the match started, the odds for rain had diminished, but on Friday rain was a near certainty for the afternoon. So the teams started early to finish before the wet stuff arrived. That was a smart move, because the rain started about 20 minutes after the guys finished for the day.

The overall tournament was won by Al Smith and his partner, Frank Rayne. But they were forced to work very hard for that prize, as their victory of flight one was not secured until after a sudden-death playoff which lasted four holes. Tim Ley and David Sendlenski gave them quite a run for their money, but eventually lost on Cypress four.

Other flight winners were as follows:

2nd flight: Steve Ley and Jason Ley 3rd flight: Steve Betsko and Steve Betsko, Jr. 4th flight: Robert Brown and Steve Brown

5th flight: Gary Kiner and Ed Compson

6th flight: Frank Vanzin and Gus Calleri

As in past years, the tournament activities

started on Wednesday, with a free round of golf for all the participants and, in the evening, a pizza and beer party, compliments of the MMG Committee. This

Calcutta evening

featured a

wagering event in which

teams bought

the opportunity

to participate. Teams

were

randomly

drawn until six Calcutta “flights” were established that had one team from each of the six golf flights. At the end of the tournament, the Calcutta flight

whose participants had scored

the most

points in the tournament was

the winner and

those six teams divided the pot.

There were lots of extra activities and

contests to make the tournament a very special

event. Village Cadillac sponsored a hole-in-one contest on Cypress 6 both Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, no one won the Cadillac. Love Motorsports sponsored a hole-in-one on Oak 3 on Saturday, but no one won the new GEM car, either.

There was a closest-to-the-pin contest for every flight on Friday and Saturday, yielding a total of 12 winners.

“Pot of Gold” was an opportunity to win some money by displaying exceptional golf skills. On Thursday

if participants reached

the green with their tee shot

on Cypress 6, they

qualified for the final competition on Friday, which was held from 150 yards out on Cypress 9. Entry fee was $5.00 and those who

missed the green could buy entry to the final competition for another $5.00. Walter Moulton (the guy who’s always on the practice green, even after dark) pulled out his driver (of all clubs!) and smacked his ball 5 feet 8 inches from the pin to win $210.

For the ladies, there was golf at World Woods’ short course on Friday and a putting contest on Saturday. That was won by

Margaret Sullivan, the wife of Stuyvie Wainwright’s partner, David. The ladies were also invited to join the participants on Thursday evening for heavy hors d’oeuvres, for lunch on Saturday and, of course, for the semi-formal dinner dance on Saturday evening.

That’s when the drawings were held for the wine and booze baskets and the 50/50 “Share the Pot.”

The members of the Member/Guest

Committee had been selling raffle tickets for some weeks as a way to raise funds to help pay for the tournament. Jim Rubilotta, Andy Rubilotta’s partner (and son) won

the 50/50

drawing and pocketed $580.

As with many important events, an unforeseen difficulty will often crop up. So it was with the club’s restaurant operation, as food and beverage manager Robin Frick was felled by

that nasty virus that’s been going around. But Cassidy Craay stepped in and was “boss lady” for the event, managing to ensure that everything went very well indeed. And also proving that the untested very often will show their mettle in a way that is both promising and gratifying. (But perhaps not without a price--like a four-day migraine.)

Sugarmill Woods Men’s Golf Association

By Bob Strausser

The MGA Executive Board and Committee Chairmen wish everyone an enjoyable Holiday Season and a New Year filled with happiness, good health

and better golf.

The weather for November has been very good except for the few cold nights in the middle

of the month.

Championship Tournament

The MGA Championship Tournament was played on October 25th, November 8th & 15th. Congratulations to all the winners and special congratulations to the MGA champion, Fred DiBattista and the low gross winner, Bill Butterworth. The MGA Board and Committee Chairmen appreciate all who participated and made this a successful and enjoyable event. Pictures of the winners are included in this newsletter. Also included are the results of the tournament.

A special thanks to Dick Tuxbury, Special Tournament Chairman, for setting up the tournament.

MGA Championship Dinner Dance

The Dinner Dance was held on Saturday evening, November 17th. Once again this event was very successful with 78 people who enjoyed the evening with their MGA friends. Also, and very special, there were 11 MGA past presidents in attendance: 2003 Bill Williamson, 2004 & 2005 Mike Theodore, 2006 & 2007 Ken Eckhardt, 2008 Bob Strausser, 2009 Mike Schwabek, 2011 Mike Howard, 2012 Dick Tuxbury, 2013 John Bradley, 2015 Bruce Whewell, 2016 John Raymond, 2017 Wally Wyatt.

Pictures from the dinner party are included in this newsletter.

Holiday Tournament

The MGA Holiday Tournament will be held on Thursday, December 13th. The format for the tournament will be 'Individual Point Quota within each Foursome'. There will be a luncheon immediately after golf, compliments of your MGA. NOTE - Sign up to play will be on line through Sign-Up-Genius. There is a separate sign-up sheet for the luncheon in the men's locker room. You can sign up for the luncheon even if you are not playing golf. We need to give the Club a head count for the luncheon.

MGA Gold-Green Tees

Currently SMW MGA local rule states “Optional green tees may be used by individuals who have a combined age and handicap of “100” or more. Individuals, who meet the age and handicap rule and play from the green tees, may elect to return to the gold tees once a year. This option may only be elected on January 1st of each year. If a player elects to go back to the gold tees he must play from the gold tees for the entire calendar year.” The MGA Board or the Weekly Tournament Chairman must be notified no later than December15, 2018 if you intend to make a change. The Tournament Chairman is

Dick Tuxbury.

Southern Woods Men’s Final Results

December is here, but we have not seen winter. Isn't that great? The course is in great shape! The new format of an actual

tournament for the conclusion of the MGA Series is about to be initiated. I hope it is

enjoyed by the competitors. With the completion of this years MGA Series those that want to change the tee they play from need to declare with Mike Theodore or the Pro shop by Jan. 5 1919.

All members should be aware that the MGA will have 4 tournaments this year. There will be an additional $5 entrance fee along with the regular MGA fee. The payout will be both cash and the regular chits. The dates will be publicized with plenty of advanced notice. I would like to also encourage everyone to enter the match play event that will be announced this month and started in January.

I wish you all the best of Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Sugarmill Woods Ladies’ Golf Association

By Joanne Tuxbury

November was certainly a busy month for the LGA. Our biggest event of the year, the Sugar and Spice Tournament, chaired by Cathy Wright and Karen Taylor, was a success, giving 64 golfers an opportunity to win multiple prizes: tournament, 50/50, raffles, and a Putting Contest. Our heartfelt thanks go to: Robin and her very amiable and hardworking staff that provided us with a delicious lunch and dessert; Golf staff Ed Burfeindt, PGA and David Knighton who gave us the scoring support; Dick Tuxbury and Tom Venable for running the putting contest; Jeff and Steve our very capable cart barn staff for the set up and service; and our maintenance staff who worked hard to make the course playable.

May your holidays be blessed and filled with wonderful memories.

Join the Alliance. Come to our meetings, hear the experts, speak to groups, help at festivals, help with fundraisers, help with mailings, attend commission and agency

ndmeetings and speak out to protect the Homosassa! We meet at 7 p.m. on the 2 Thursday of the month at the Homosassa Civic Club.

The Save the Homosassa River Alliance has been organized to inform citizens about all significant environmental issues affecting the Homosassa River System. The goal is to help restore, protect and perpetuate the native integrity of the related springs and rivers.

The Homosassa River is a 7-mile long fresh water river that leads through an incredibly productive estuary to the Gulf of Mexico. Here the fresh water from the springs mixes with salt water from the Gulf providing a nursery for many fish and other animals. If the water is polluted or too salty, then the young and fragile fish, shrimp and crabs will not live. High quality fresh water from the springs flowing into the river is essential.

Any factor causing environmental degradation and any means to aid in restoration is appropriate for the attention of the Alliance. We are a 501c3, non-profit organization and our game plan is to provide education and information at schools, at State Parks, at festivals, thru presentations, thru brochures, thru newsletters and thru the media. We provide a forum for citizens and experts to discuss environmental issues. We work with County Commissioners and planners, with SWFWMD and with the Florida DEP to help develop and apply the best management practices.

Welcome to the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association! Want to meet others with an interest in the great game of tennis and to make friends with some wonderful people? Join the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association!

Towards this goal, the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association (SMWTA) issues a tennis roster that includes a listing of current officers and players as well as a schedule of yearly events. By joining the Tennis Association, you are placed on the membership roster and will also receive e-mail correspondence to keep you up-to-date on other members and tennis events.

The Association also organizes several "Playdays" a year for its members, round-robin mixed doubles events, which serve to bring players together. Lunch follows, sometimes as a delightful covered-dish affair beneath the trees at Oak Village. Guests of members are welcome to play and join in the festivities. Non-playing family members are welcome to cheer on the players and join us for lunch. A portion of your dues goes towards providing Playday prizes, courtside refreshments, photos, etc.

The SMWTA also helps its members in time of need. When a member or a non-playing spouse is down and out, our Sunshine Committee is there with a card or goodies to help cheer them up.

Another primary function of the SMWTA is to provide representation to Sugarmill Woods Country Club management in matters of concern to tennis players. By joining the Association, you add your voice to those with similar tennis-related concerns.

The Tennis Association has also donated items to improve the tennis facilities. In the past, we have provided such items as the bleacher seats and shoe washers at the Sugarmill Woods tennis courts. In December of each year, a gala tennis banquet is

held at the Sugarmill Woods Country Club. A portion of your dues goes towards appetizers, music, awards, photos and mementos.

By joining the Tennis Association you get all of the above benefits, plus an organization of volunteers that helps make your tennis community a better place. You also get involved with a wonderful group of people who enjoy the great game of tennis. Priceless! To join up, place your $15.00 dues, which covers everyone in your immediate household, in the Oak Village drop box located in the shelter between Courts 2 and 3. Include your name(s), address, phone number and e-mail address. You can also give or send your dues to Treasurer Joe Lareau, 17 Nemesia Ct. E., Homosassa, FL 34446. Checks should be made out to “Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association.” See you on the courts!
