Message From TheGeneral Manager

By Rick Kelso, General Manager

October is a very hectic month as we all are trying to get ready for the busy season. From all the golf events, all the parties in the restaurants and the maintenance preparing the

golf course for the wintertime. The entire staff is working extremely hard and doing their best to

provide you with an enjoyable experience each time you come to the Club.

This summer has been extremely slow for both our Clubs, especially July and August. The weather was the major contributor to this slow season. There was a hurricane, tropical storms, lots of rain, plus temperatures were reaching the mid-90° most of the summer (which felt like 110°) and with 100% humidity! Hopefully with October here the weather will become a lot more manageable for everyone to come out and play our incredible golf courses.

Tim and the maintenance staff have done a tremendous job with some very trying times this summer in getting these courses in the best conditions we can. Great Job!!!!!

I would like to personally THANK all the members and the entire community of Sugarmill Woods for their patience and support during and after Hurricane Irma. I know there is still a tremendous amount of work to get everything cleaned up. This process will be very time consuming; your cooperation and patience during this period are greatly appreciated.

The Annual Men's Member-Guest is scheduled for November 2, 3, & 4 2017. This year's Committee has worked extremely hard this summer putting all the details together for this year's event. I am proud to announce that we have a full field of 36 two-man teams and I am looking forward to another great tournament!

I was looking at the calendar of events for the upcoming months, to see what we have going on, and WOW, Robin has got the restaurant extremely busy!! Make sure that you make your dinner reservations early and don't miss out on these great events and the great food prepared by Chef Justin.

By Tim Gatz, Director of Golf Maintenance

As we enter the month of October, we are beginning to see the fall changes.

S h o r t e r d a y s , s l i g h t l y c o o l e r temperatures and a lower angle of the sun

are all signs of seasons changing from summer to fall.

Because of the items mentioned above, it is important that everyone contribute to keeping our courses in good condition over the next few months. Cart traffic becomes the number one issue during the winter months because the non overseeded fairways and rough do not actively grow when cooler temperatures arrive. Wear patterns are created when carts are not kept on cart paths or rough lines. The Bermuda grass cannot recover from the increased cart traffic during the winter months. The increased play also means more divots on tees and fairways and more ball marks on greens. Please take time to repair these items when playing your round.

Last month at Sugarmill Woods we completed our overseeding of tees and greens. Over the next few weeks, we will be applying liquid fertilizer to all over seeded areas to help with the maturation process. We will also start to use liquid nutritionals on fairway surfaces along with green pigments to keep color throughout the next few months.

There is also a bit of detail work that needs to be addressed around the courses which include bunker maintenance and tree work.

At Southern Woods, all major cultural practices are complete. The only items that will continue on greens are pencil tine aerification and some light verticutting and topdressing. This will continue until our overseeding period in early November.

A good deal of tree work, cart path edging, bunker maintenance and detail work will be started this month. We now have more time to devote to the items as our summer practices are behind us now.

Message From The Membership Director

By Jordan Le Meur, Membership Director

September brought us the unwanted Hurricane Irma, but luckily Sugarmill Woods seems to have survived with minor problems. I hope that is true for

everyone in our community. I heard many stories about people helping each other, and

it really made me proud to say that I live in Sugarmill Woods. Many Sugarmill Woods residents were either sharing generators with others or were passing out water and ice to people who did not have power. Thank you very much to everyone who helped others during or after the storm!

A reminder that the Incentive Program that started on August 1, 2017 is still in effect! Please continue to let your friends and family within the area know about the wonderful incentive plan we have. It will be conducted until further notice, so take advantage! It is a great way of rewarding current long-term members, as well as increasing our membership. The incentive plan was provided in Rick Kelso's article in the August 2017 newsletter. That newsletter, as well as other archived editions, is available on the SMWCC website at https://www.sugarmillwoodscc.com/news/168-2017-newsletter and then click the tab that says August. Or, if you prefer, I can also provide that information.

I would like to conduct more external trips at Sugarmill Woods Country Club and would really like to get the opinion of the membership. I started to question some of the members that I see on a daily basis, but I want to know EVERYONE's opinion. I will be able to get a better sense of what the majority of the membership would like to see and do.

1. What types of new events would you like to attend? Is there a particular sporting event that you like? Hockey? Football?

2. What kinds of opposing teams do you like? Many of you are native Floridians, but I know that many of you are from different areas and like other teams.

3. What else would you like to see aside from sporting events? Is it a shopping trip to Mount Dora? A theatre trip? Murder mystery train ride?

PLEASE send me an email letting me know your thoughts and opinions; it will help me greatly. I will do my best to make everyone happy and provide a fun time out!

Upcoming Events: Walgreens will be here at Sugarmill Woods Country Club on October 18th starting around 11 am to administer flu shots.

If you have any suggestions or concerns please feel free to give me a call at my direct line (352) 559-7106, or e-mail

me at [email protected].

I hope that you all came through Hurricane Irma safely and things are

returning to normal. With autumn approaching we should see some cooler

weather and the return of many of our winter members.

I must thank my staff for the great job they did in repainting many areas of the clubhouse last month. The new window coverings and fresh paint have been well received. Speaking of staff, I'm sure you agree that Jordan has been doing a fantastic job as the new membership director, it's so good to see one of our “kids” grow up and move up in the organization.

Game Night this month is Tuesday, October 10th featuring the gamers' menu, which is also available to non-gamers in the lounge or it makes a great carry out. “Cocktail Cuties” meet in the lounge between 3 and 5 pm every Tuesday to sample the week's cocktail delight and enjoy some lively conversation. If you haven't joined the girls yet come along and join in the fun.

In honor of Oktoberfest, on Friday, October 20th we will serve a German Buffet featuring all of your favorite German specialties. Lederhosen optional – go on, I dare you! A great party with music and dancing starting at 5 pm for cocktails with dinner served at 5:30 pm. The cost is $22.95 and reservations are strongly recommended as these events are always popular.

This month's Sunday breakfast buffet will be on Sunday, October 15. We strongly urge you to make reservations to this event. Reservations will be from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm and it will be $10.95 per person++.

The usual weekly specials, along with the regular menu, will continue - Thursday is Prime Rib night for $18.95 and Friday's Fish Fry is $13.95. The regular lunch menu is being served on Sundays from 11 am to 2:30 pm with some interesting breakfast special features. Going into this winter season I would ask you, please, to make table reservations so that we can guarantee the correct staffing levels, which we would appreciate, so that we can give you the service that you certainly deserve.

Upcoming Events For November

Game Night next month will be on Tuesday, November 14th.

The Grand Thanksgiving Buffet will be on Thursday November 23rd – delicious day for members – bad day for turkeys! Please make your reservations soon as this event always sells out.

The Men's Member Guest Tournament will be

Saturday, we will be closed to members for lunch and dinner.

You may now call the restaurant direct for reservations at 382-5645. Email me at [email protected] or call me anytime if you have any issues – and I'll be seeing you in the dining room, Robin

Message From Chef Justin Ritchey

I hope that everyone is enjoying all of the wonderful meals we have been preparing! Hurricane Irma, unfortunately, got in the way of many of the events that we had planned for the month of September, but my team and I have been working tirelessly to get back on track. October will hopefully be smoother, as there are many new specials on the way!

The month of October brings some special events that we are excited to bring to you: the Octoberfest buffet and the monthly Sunday buffet. I ask that you would please make reservations for these and all future events of this kind. Knowing how many people I have prior to an event really helps me provide the best possible dining experience. Thank you and I look forward to serving you!

Serves 4Ingredients:

• 3 cups all-purpose flour1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice (optional)1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened2 cups granulated sugar3 large eggs1 tablespoon vanilla extract1 (15 oz) can pumpkin1/4 cup vegetable oil1 cup milk12 oz (1 1/2 packages) cream cheese, softened3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened3 tablespoons pure maple syrup2 teaspoons vanilla extract2 teaspoons cinnamon6 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Grease 3, 8-inch round cake pans. Set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

3. In a large bowl/stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla, pumpkin and vegetable oil. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk.

4. Divide batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center

5. Remove pans from oven and place in freezer for 45 minutes to cool. (You do not have to do this step, it is optional. You can let the cakes cool completely at regular room temperature with no issues, as well.)

6. For the frosting: In a large bowl, cream butter and cream cheese until smooth. Beat in maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon. Add confectioners' sugar and beat on low speed until combined, then on high until frosting is smooth.

7. Assemble the three layers with a thick layer of frosting in between each layer. Then apply a thin crumb coat on the top and sides. Pop back in the freezer to harden the crumb coat for about 10 minutes.

Apply one final thick and even layer around the outside of the cake. Store in the fridge until ready to serve.

Come join the “Sugarmill Cocktail Cuties” on Tuesday in the Lounge, starting at 3:30 pm every Tuesday. In addition to everyday 2 for 1 drinks, there will be a Tuesday only specialty Drink 2 for 1. If you are looking for some mid-week fun, this is the group to join! See you Tuesday in the Score’s Lounge.

Playing tennis can do wonders for your health! Research shows that tennis provides one of the best total-body workouts you can get. The sport uses nearly every muscle in your body, requiring many types of actions such as running, striking the ball in a variety of ways, and changing direction to position yourself for a shot. Medical professionals tell us that, by playing 2 to 3 times a week, tennis boosts your stamina, increases your range of motion, increases your strength, coordination and bone density and improves your mood. Also, when playing, you burn a large number of calories which helps keep your weight down.

As many of us know, you can overwork certain muscles and joints, which keeps you off the court in order to nurse your injuries. Before playing, you should warm up your large muscles with a few simple stretches. Try to avoid overuse and give your body time to repair itself between outings; you can minimize the chance of injuries this way.

Getting outdoors and socializing with others helps to overcome feelings of depression. By getting out on the courts, enjoying some exercise, and mixing it up with positive people, you can improve your mood and help dispel the blues.

Some of us are reluctant to play on the hard courts because of the increased impact on our bodies. To better absorb the shock, try wearing special padded tennis socks and heel inserts in your shoes. Some players wear two pairs of socks to ease the stress on their joints.

It does not matter what type of exercise you do; the important thing is to do something. Some days it is hard to get yourself out there because we, as humans, tend to take the easier path of least resistance. Try tennis – it is a wonderful way to keep in shape!

Our Tennis Association will be holding its next Playday on Saturday, October 21st with a tailgate cookout to follow. Come on out for an enjoyable time! Sign up at the tennis center or by calling Rick Scholl at 382-0353 or Jeff Berg, at 503-2717.

We have a great tennis community here in Sugarmill Woods that welcomes players of all levels. Our more experienced players and Tennis Director Rick Scholl will help newcomers get started. If you want to join the Tennis Association,

give me a call at 382-8909.

Drop Shots

By Rick Scholl, Manager & Director of Tennis

Tennis

Although we escaped hurricane Irma with little or NO damage, we had to cancel the Playday in

September because it was only a week after the massive storm went through here. The windscreens

did their job and broke loose, and luckily NO fences came down. The only "real" damage at the club was a bunch of branches down, etc. which had to be cleaned up. Look forward to resuming tennis and the Playday in October. As we get into October, the clay courts will be in demand more often, SO don't forget to reserve your court starting five days in advance.

In addition, the various Ladies Leagues will be starting on Tuesday, Thursday, and USTA Leagues on Saturdays. Member reservations do work around these leagues and times. There are plenty of hours in a day to play and reserve a court.

Swimming Pools

The swimming pools at both locations should continue to be busy into October because of the warm temperatures and long days. Please remember to sign in at Oak Village. There are pool rules posted at the Oak Village pool regarding the use of floats, etc. If you want your own copy of the current pool rules, please see Jordan at Sugarmill Woods Country Club.

Fitness Center

The new flat screen TV's are up in the gym. What a nice improvement from the other sets! During October and November, we will be replacing the red fitness machine cushions that need new ones. This will mean that particular machine will be out of service for a few days while the seat or whatever piece is being repaired.

Friday Funsters

We are starting the Mixed Doubles "Funsters" group on October 13th. If anyone would like to be on the "Sub" list, please let me know. I update the SUB list as needed. This group consists of two clay courts each Friday morning from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

Sugarmill Woods Men’s Golf Association

By Bob Strausser

The Sunday Chronicle, September 17th, said it best - "Hurricane Irma will go down in Citrus County lore as the worst catastrophic event that didn't happen, but it sure looked bad a week

ago". Our county was spared much of the destruction experienced elsewhere. We

have a lot to be thankful for.

Many of the snowbirds will be returning to Florida in October. We wish them a safe trip and welcome them back.

New MGA Members

The MGA Board and Committee Chairmen would like to welcome Rick Odell, Al Smith and Rick Kingsbury who recently joined the MGA.

MGA Championship Tournament

Flyers for this tournament will be posted on the MGA bulletin board in the men's locker room, in the Pro Shop and e-mailed to all MGA members. The format will be individual stroke play, flighted - best two of three rounds (two of two if you cannot play all three rounds). The first round is scheduled for Thursday, October 26th, the second round on November 9th and the third round on November 16th. Sign up for this tournament is on "Sign Up Genius". NOTE: there is a regular MGA Thursday game on November 2nd so there is no conflict with the Club's Member Guest.

MGA Championship Dinner Dance

The MGA dinner dance will be held on Saturday evening, November 18th at Sugarmill Woods Country Club. Mark your calendars for this event which is the highlight of the MGA year. Flyers with further details including the menu selections will be posted on the MGA bulletin board, in the Pro Shop and e-mailed to all MGA members.

Reminder

The procedure which all MGA members should know and follow -- MGA weekly tournament games are played on Thursdays, 8:30 am shot gun start. Sign-ups are now on line through "Sign Up Genius". The sign-up list is downloaded early Wednesday morning. Any changes, additions or cancellations after the list is downloaded must be coordinated with Dick Tuxbury, 382-4031 (NOT THE PRO SHOP). Cancellations on Thursday morning should be telephoned to the Pro Shop (382-3838, ext. 14) by 7:30 am. Walk-ins on Thursday morning will be accommodated if there are openings. If you sign up to play and do not show up or call to cancel after the score cards and pairings are set, you will be charged the $3.00 tournament fee.

Well, as we all know, the weather dominated the September news. The SW

MGA experienced one rainout and one Irma out. As a result, the rough is now thick and, in the mornings, wet and sticky. Makes for a lot of fun for those of us who spend a lot of time there.

The course cleanup after Irma has been quick and efficient. Fortunately, the damage was limited. Hat's off to all of those who helped in the effort.

As a reminder to our returning snowbirds; the lollipops in front of the greens have been replaced with cart “arrow” signs. Please remember to follow the arrows.

Sugarmill Woods Ladies’ Golf Association

By Joanne Tuxbury

Mother Nature has had her way with Citrus County. By late Saturday, S e p t e m b e r 9 t h , Hurricane Irma was bearing down on us. While SMW and SW were spared; the brunt of t h e s t o r m , p o w e r outages, downed trees and l imbs, lack of gasoline, etc. did not dampen the spirit of giving and reaching out to friends, neighbors, and strangers who might have needed a hand up. Let's continue to help where we can and be patient. Thank you to our dedicated maintenance crews who worked to bring our courses back to playability. Finally, a great big thank you to our first responders, police, and power crews who kept us safe and got us up and running as soon as possible.

Our Opening Day of golf was canceled due to heavy rain, but we all returned at 12:00 to enjoy a wonderful luncheon planned Karen Hall and Mary Tarorick. Following our luncheon, President Ginger Bong presided over our opening season meeting. Various committee chairs shared upcoming events and items of note for the membership. We will be looking for volunteer help to contribute to the success of our events.

The Practice Tee

By Ed Burfeindt, PGA Head Golf Professional

This month I will be discussing two different golf game formats that quite a

few golfers get confused with. The first format is a Scramble, and the second one is a Best Ball. The confusion comes that in a scramble tournament; the team is always playing from the “best ball” or the best position. I hope that after describing each event, the confusion with terminology will be cleared up.

The Scramble format involves two or more player teams, where each player on the team hits a tee shot and then the players decide which shot they like best. The players then play from that spot. The person whose shot was not taken picks up their ball and moves it to within one club length of the selected spot. Once the spot is selected, the players then play a shot from that spot, and again pick which one they like better. This continues until the ball is holed out. A couple of side rules: players are allowed to place their ball within one club length of the selected spot (no closer to the hole). Additionally, players cannot change which cut of grass their ball is in (i.e. you cannot place your ball in the fairway if your marker is in the rough). This format is suited more for beginners because it takes the pressure off of having to hit every shot perfect. Differing skill sets work best in this format, and also allows for more risk-taking. If you partner hits a short drive right down the middle, you can afford to take a risk and swing away. Worst-case you just play your partner's ball in the fairway. Best-case you hit a longer drive and are in a more advantageous position. The ideal team set up would be to have a straight hitter, a long hitter, a short game player, and a good putter.

The Best Ball format involves two or more player teams where each player on the team plays his or her own golf ball throughout the round. After each hole the player with the lowest score on the hole (or “best ball”) serves as the team's score. The higher scoring player's score is thrown out for that particular hole. For instance, if Player A records a five and Player B records a six and Player C records a seven, the team should record a five as their best ball score for the hole. Each player should record their individual score for each hole, and have a separate line on the score-card for their team best ball score. Best ball format allows players to play their own game (since players keep track of their own scores), while also allowing them to take advantage of their partner playing especially well on certain holes. Scores tend to be a bit higher in best ball than in a scramble, simply because each player has to play their own shots. If you hit a bad drive, you have to play it out (and hope your partner is doing better).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------The Homosassa River Alliance

Join the Alliance. Come to our meetings, hear the experts, speak to groups, help at festivals, help with fundraisers, help with mailings, attend commission and agency meetings and speak out to protect the Homosassa! We meet at 7 p.m. on

ndthe 2 Thursday of the month at the Homosassa Civic Club.

The Save the Homosassa River Alliance has been organized to inform citizens about all significant environmental issues affecting the Homosassa River System. The goal is to help restore, protect and perpetuate the native integrity of the related springs and rivers.

The Homosassa River is a 7-mile long fresh water river that leads through an incredibly productive estuary to the Gulf of Mexico. Here the fresh water from the springs mixes with salt water from the Gulf providing a nursery for many fish and other animals. If the water is polluted or too salty, then the young and fragile fish, shrimp and crabs will not live. High quality fresh water from the springs flowing into the river is essential.

Any factor causing environmental degradation and any means to aid in restoration is appropriate for the attention of the Alliance. We are a 501c3, non-profit organization and our game plan is to provide education and information at schools, at State Parks, at festivals, thru presentations, thru brochures, thru newsletters and thru the media. We provide a forum for citizens and experts to discuss environmental issues. We work with County Commissioners and planners, with SWFWMD and with the Florida DEP to help develop and apply the best management practices.

Welcome to the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association! Want to meet others with an interest in the great game of tennis and to make friends with some wonderful people? Join the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association!

Towards this goal, the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association (SMWTA) issues a tennis roster that includes a listing of current officers and players as well as a schedule of yearly events. By joining the Tennis Association, you are placed on the membership roster and will also receive e-mail correspondence to keep you up-to-date on other members and tennis events.

The Association also organizes several "Playdays" a year for its members, round-robin mixed doubles events, which serve to bring players together. Lunch follows, sometimes as a delightful covered-dish affair beneath the trees at Oak Village. Guests of members are welcome to play and join in the festivities. Non-playing family members are welcome to cheer on the players and join us for lunch. A portion of your dues goes towards providing Playday prizes, courtside refreshments, photos, etc.

The SMWTA also helps its members in time of need. When a member or a non-playing spouse is down and out, our Sunshine Committee is there with a card or goodies to help cheer them up.

Another primary function of the SMWTA is to provide representation to Sugarmill Woods Country Club management in matters of concern to tennis players. By joining the Association, you add your voice to those with similar tennis-related concerns.

The Tennis Association has also donated items to improve the tennis facilities. In the past, we have provided such items as the bleacher seats and shoe washers at the Sugarmill Woods tennis courts. In December of each year, a gala tennis banquet is held at the Sugarmill Woods Country Club. A portion of your dues goes towards appetizers, music, awards, photos and mementos.

By joining the Tennis Association you get all of the above benefits, plus an organization of volunteers that helps make your tennis community a better place. You also get involved with a wonderful group of people who enjoy the great game of tennis. Priceless!

To join up, place your $15.00 dues, which covers everyone in your immediate household, in the Oak Village drop box located in the shelter between Courts 2 and 3. Include your name(s), address, phone number and e-mail address. You can also give or send your dues to Treasurer Joe Lareau, 17 Nemesia Ct. E.,
