Wednesday November 13, 2019 Sues News Remembrance Day On Monday, our school took part in two Remembrance Day services, one at school and the other at Green Point where some of our leaders attended the Bayside Council service. Our school captains - Amy Simos and Saxon Taranto ; and our Youth Ambassadors Jackson Follett and Olive Tuppen planned and conducted the service at school which resulted in a highly respectful program which captivated the interest and attention of our whole school. Hampton Harmonies led the singing of the National Anthem and performed a poignant rendition of In Flanders Fields’. Amy Simos presented a short summary of the significance of Remembrance Day, this was carefully researched and presented in a manner that all children could understand. The Ode was recited by Jackson Follett and also the poem entitled We Shall Keep the Faithby Moira Michael. Olive Tuppen selected a beautiful poem entitled Remembrance Daywhich really targeted the younger children in the audience and read this with great sensitivity and perfect timing. Finally Saxon Taranto welcomed the challenge of learning The Last Postand Reveillein a fortnight and performed these magnificently on saxophone. Our captains and ambassadors showed fine collaborative spirit in organising this service, they rehearsed together, provided pertinent and encouraging feedback to each other and were outstanding in their presentation. Please see the report later in the newsletter regarding the Green Point service. Parental Support Literacy resources My sincere thanks go to the following parents who have donated time and energy to make some literacy cards to support the childrens learning in spelling recently: Judith Dichiera (mother of Lexie and Sami), Kim Phillips (mother of Abby and Max Edwards), Zada Ross (mother of Verity and Fergus Ross), Colleen Benzie (mother of Ruby McMillan), Melissa Da Silveira (mother of Tessa and Hunter) and Brad Mischel (father of Joshua).

Amy Simos presented a short summary of the significance of Remembrance Day, this was carefully researched and presented in a manner that all children could understand. The Ode was recited by Jackson Follett and also the poem entitled ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ by Moira Michael. Olive Tuppen selected a beautiful poem entitled ‘Remembrance Day’ which really targeted the younger children in the audience and read this with great sensitivity and perfect timing. Uniform Sales On Wednesday Melissa da Silveira organised a second hand uniform sale in the quadrangle which raised $708.00 I am grateful for the support provided to our volunteers who assisted with the sorting, folding and sales of a huge number uniform items: Filomena Albrecht, Nikki Berriman, Kelly Miller, Martina Mueller, Karalee Lawson, Linda Gendron and Jeffic Ye. Special thanks go to Melissa who has adopted this role on numerous occasions and does a wonderful job of finding new homes for quality uniforms!

Assembly Well done to Prep D, Rosie’s class who led the singing of the National Anthem on Friday. Prep D had a busy day because they also performed the lantern dance at assembly; they looked very impressive wearing some colourful, authentic Chinese costumes and large brightly coloured lanterns. The children clearly enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their dancing talents.

Emma Glendenning in 1B and Eloise Hepworth in 1A were recognised for their excellent approach and achievement in the Reading Recovery program. Both girls have tried very hard and maintained consistent effort to improve in both reading and writing. Philipa Bache in 2A has been working as a cross age tutor with Emma and has been a wonderfully supportive and encouraging buddy over a few months. Thank you Philipa! Our school uses peer age and cross age tutoring regularly. We often have children coming down to read and share their work with us in the office; very often accompanied by a cross age tutor. The benefits of peer age and cross age tutoring for the children include higher academic achievement, improved relationships with peers, improved personal and social development as well as increased motivation. We certainly see evidence of these benefits on a daily basis. Art Masters Grade 1 & 2 students have been experimenting with the processes and techniques of painted tints, collage and hand-made paper in their Hot Air Balloon artwork. These artworks took quite a number of weeks to create as there were many individual components to be made before putting it all together. Firstly, the students mixed and blended colours to create the sunsets in the background. They then recycled newspaper by shredding and making a paste to make their own handmade paper for the balloons. When this paper was dry, they used pipets with blue and yellow food dye which when combined, made the secondary colour of green. The students then went about adding more texture to the grass and water by scratching back the paint and when dry tearing the paper instead of using scissors. Finally, they crimped their paper for the baskets and cut out their own photos where they chose to look up or down to personalise their creations. Well done to the following children who shared their art work at Assembly on Friday 1A: Georgia Hastwell, Isaac Poon; 1B: Woodrow Watson, Ayla Brown; 1C: Isla Dale, Zoe Armstrong 2A: Milla Malherbe; 2B: Xavier Dowling; 2C: Caitlin Murray; 2D: Lexie Dichiera, 2E: Aydin Kayali Sue Knight Principal

Bayside City Council Remembrance Day Ceremony

On Remembrance Day, we sent five students (Friendship Captains - Grace McMahon and Marcus Holdsworth, Peacemaker Captains - Kat Johnson and Cara Sharpe, Goldstein Medal Recipient - Oscar Johnston) to represent Hampton Primary at the Green Point Remembrance Day Ceremony. Once we had finished walking to the site, we received some commemorative poppies, and proceeded with the ceremony. After a warm welcome and acknowledgement of country we were introduced to the Mentone Grammar Army Cadet Unit representatives attending, these being Sergeant Jeremy Campbell (The Guard Commander), Sergeant Tayla Langenfelds, Sergeant Joshua Madden, Sergeant Thomas Mutton and Sergeant Kira Walters. After stepping up to the memorial, LT Col Neil Smith AM, the master of ceremonies, welcomed us and reminded us why we gather on Remembrance Day. Neil Smith AM then read The Ode, a beautifully written poem about the fallen soldiers. After having the crowd repeat the last line, Jamie Budgen of St Leonard’s College played the last post amazingly, followed by a moment of silence. Jamie Budgen then played Rouse and afterwards LT Col Neil Smith AM then spoke more about World War One and Two, giving sad information about our soldiers and the war. The Mayor of Bayside then spoke, followed by the Lord’s Prayer, read by Graeme Disney OAM. Tim Wilson (federal member for Goldstein) then read the Lost Soldier Poem, which spoke about how we know so little of these soldiers, but we respect them so much for what they did. James Newbury (State Member for Brighton) read ‘In Flanders Field’, a well known poem. The service was excellent and very moving. After a final farewell, we returned to campus.

John’s News Aspire and Thrive Camp participants information session Tuesday A final reminder for our participants of our upcoming Aspire and Thrive camp on December 4-6 that our information session will be held on Tuesday November 19 at 5:30-6:30 pm in the BER. Upstanders Movie Night Celebration! I had the pleasure of joining our year 5 Upstanders group of 17 students on Tuesday evening at the public premiere their short film about Cyber safety to an audience of almost 300 parents, friends and fellow students. Students from the the Upstanders schools, (a network of Beaumaris, Brighton Beach, Hampton, Sandringham, Sandringham East and Primary Schools) have been working on their films since May of this year. The Upstanders group, formally called the Bully Stoppers have the core objectives of promoting and improving wellbeing outcomes for students and communities through structures and programs that actively support wellbeing in schools ie. ‘Friendship Ambassadors’/ ‘Peace Makers’. Upstander students also develop their leadership capacity by sharing the positive and proactive wellbeing messages with their peers and other students. All our Upstander students presented to more than 400 year 5 peers on Tuesday morning at the Dendy Brighton with information about the why and how they created their film. Almost all attended the evening premiere as well and shared their film with their family. The films are a wonderful credit to their commitment, persistence and understanding of the impact of cyber bullying and cyber safety. They have created a film with a clear and important message about safe behaviours online that all students can relate to.

While it won’t be nominated for the Oscars or even get a mention at TropFest every Upstander student should be proud of their contribution to the film and they will have the opportunity to lead a lesson to other Hampton classes as well as a touring roadshow next year to continue the important messages contained in the films.

We hope to be able to make the film available to our community but obviously we need to be aware of online safety and sharing information!

Congratulations to all our year 5 Upstander students and also to Sharon Dowling for her ongoing work to support our students so well.

Trials for 2020 teams We are running trials for all available age groups, where an age group has only one team or existing players have indicated they wish to play in the same teams as last year, teams will be formed on that basis. We are still running trials for these age groups as a potential means of attracting new players to the club. We encourage all our players to attend trials as it is good experience and at the very least will be a training session with an external coach

Location : Hampton Primary School. Please note Football boots CANNOT be worn.

Please register on our website if you are attending the trials.
