Wednesday November 6, 2019 Sues News Grade 3 and 4 Camp Last week, we had just over 200 students attending the camp at Arrabri Lodge in East Warburton. This camp is situated in one of the prettiest spots in Victoria. All campers enjoyed pleasant weather, although our Grade 3s certainly had plenty of sunshine and higher temperatures in the latter part of the week. The camp facility has recently undergone a refurbishment with noticeable improvements being made. Camp is a great opportunity for children to interact with different and less familiar children at the same grade level. Many of the activities were quite different from the classroom practices and encouraged children to take a risk and or collaborate with children to reach a solution or agree on suitable response. The many benefits of camp include being able to do this in a relaxed, outdoor context and develop some social connections at the same time. My sincere thanks go to the staff and parents attending the camps including: Gr 4 staff and parents: Deb Brayshaw (Camp Coordinator), Chris Berry, Laura Shugg, Paul Coverdale, Tim Bernau, Narelle Hart, Jackson Moffitt, Heli Bayley, Mary Cole, Alex Webb and Brett Lynch. Gr 3 staff and parents: Stuart Macdermid (Camp Coordinator), Helen Patterson Farr, Chris Gillies, Dean Ross, John Painter, Nick Fisher, Heli Bayley, Owen Smith, Kim Lambeth, Melissa Da Silveira and Helena Karlinder-Ostlundh. I am acutely aware that adult attendance and time devoted to caring for our children whilst on camp is onerous and exhausting; I do hope that it was also enjoyable! However time away from home, families and your own bed, apart from trying to get our little ones to quell some of their excitement and get off sleep each night can be a challenge. Many of our parents took time off work, no doubt their responsibilities and tasks to be completed will have accumulated during their absence. I am very grateful for the time and support shown. Our children regularly report that camps are a highlight for them. See some feedback from the campers later in the newsletter. Transition Program for 2020 Our school conducts two transition sessions for children currently in Grades 1-6; we had one today and the second one will be conducted next Wednesday 13 November. During these sessions the children have the opportunity to meet some of the teachers for the following year and have the opportunity to interact with children they are less familiar with but at the same grade level. We have a few new children starting who transfer from other schools; where practicable, we encourage these children to come along and meet our children and teachers and become a little familiar with our setting before starting officially in 2020.

  • We provide numerous opportunities for our 2020 Preps who are commencing school for the very first time to visit the school and meet the preps teachers and have time to work and play together. This involves: Two story time sessions: Wed 4/9, 16/10 Four transition sessions: Wed 30/10, 6/11, 13/11, 20/11 One session to meet their teacher and grade: Tuesday 10 Dec One session to meet their 2020 Grade 6 buddy and have a picnic together: Thursday 12 Dec In addition, we encourage the parents of 2020 prep children to bring them up and have a play date in our playground regularly; in this context, the more familiar they are with our setting, the more comfortable and confident they will feel in starting school. All children enrolled for 2020 will meet their grade and teacher on Tuesday 10 December. Remembrance Day: Monday 11 November Our school will be involved in a student led assembly for Remembrance Day weather permitting, in the quadrangle at 11am on Monday 11 November. In addition we have our Peacemaker and Friendship Captains and Oscar Johnston as the Goldstein medal recipient representing Hampton at the Green Point Reserve to participate in the Bayside Council Remembrance Day Service. Interested parents and community members are welcome to attend either service. Assembly Well done to FC, who led the singing of the National Anthem on Friday. Congratulations go to the Hampton String Ensemble who played ‘Dragonhunter’.

The children performed very impressively indeed; the members of this ensemble are advanced music students who have shown marked improvement and are very receptive to the expert tuition provided by Lana Zaidenberg, the string teacher and conductor. Congratulations go to: Anna Alexopoulou in 6A, Emily Arendsen in 5A, Agatha Beare in 5C, Aidan Bowd in 6A, Kiara Bowd in 4D, Lachlan Gee in 6B, Oliver Graves in 3B, Rory Greenan in 4E, Alexander Hill in 2D, Juliette Hostein in 4C, Tom Larkins in 6D, Avelynn Lawson in 4D, Gisele Rodguis in 4E, Mia Suddes in 5A, Saxon Taranto in 6D and Rocco Theuma in 6B.

Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly this week. Matilda Brown in 6C for approaching challenges with a positive mind set and an ability

to use a variety of questioning techniques to clarify, analyse and criticise a concept, allowing her to identify innovative solutions to problems and produce impressive results

Sarina Ikin in 6C for demonstrating determination, motivation and insight in her approach to school generally and literacy in particular, producing commendable results

  • Writing competition

Deidre organised a writing competition to coincide with Halloween. Numerous entries were received from across the school. The short-listed children included: Agatha Beare in 5C, Jade Doherty in 5B, Mollie Killigrew in 3E, Jack Zedras in 5A, Sarah Saint John in 6A and Olivia Kuzma in 2A. I extend congratulations to all shortlisted children who showed great skills in using descriptive language, an impressive vocabulary, interesting and varied sentence structures, a capacity to build suspense and imagination. Well done to Mollie Killigrew who won this competition and received a special prize including some enticing literature. My thanks go to Deidre for her efforts with the competition specifically and the strategies she has

used to encourage children to visit and enjoy the library.

Term 4 Curriculum Day I remind all parents that the Term 4 Curriculum Day will be conducted on Friday 13 December, there will be no school for the children on this day. However, Team Kids will be operating childcare on this day. Bookings must be made through Team Kids. Last Day of the School Year: Friday 20 December The last day of the school year is Friday 20 December; school will conclude at 1.30pm. Childcare is available from 1.30pm, again, parents must make a booking with Team Kids. Sue Knight Principal John’s News Sustainable Practice – Recycling changes One important area we are about to make changes to is the area of sustainability. We have had many discussions with children and staff about waste management at school at all year levels. As a consequence we are going to change our bins and trial eating lunch in classrooms during December using a ‘Nude food’ approach. This will mean that most children will eat their lunch and return their lunchbox to their bag immediately and students will be bringing their lunch wrappers home again each day. Many of our younger children have embraced the concept of nude food which is terrific to note, however we would like to extend the uptake of nude food right across all year levels. Each classroom will have a small compost bin, a recycled paper bin and a small landfill bin. We will have much less rubbish and hopefully very few lunchboxes left in the yard. All rubbish bins will be removed from the yard with the exception of the canteen area. We acknowledge that some of our younger children may need extra time to eat their lunch and or snack and we will be adjusting eating times as required. Some children may still not finish in time and will take their lunch outside, hopefully without their lunchbox, to the canteen area which will be the only space children can eat outside. If the lunchbox is still required, students will be able to place their lunch box in the grade tub, which we are going to leave out for this trial period so it can be returned to classrooms at the end of recess and lunchtime. This will allow us to measure the volume of food waste, recycling and land fill we produce and also refine a long term plan to improve our sustainability practices and decrease the waste permanently.

  • Grade 3 and 4 Camp It was my pleasure to attend the year 3 camp last week at Arrabri and as Sue has mentioned it is a beautiful campsite with lots of new experiences for year 3 students particularly.

For me, seeing the connections between students and overcoming anxieties for some were highlights, the level of integrity displayed by students was also impressive, making great decisions independently throughout the camp. I also loved seeing the enthusiasm of students to pan for gold in a cold Yarra River. There were some excited students in the group as they found some pyrite which inspired others to keep going too! As expected we had a few children who did get homesick but they were very well supported by other students and staff and have now seen a part of themselves that is more resilient and confident as a result. I have collected just some of the highlights for year 3 and year 4 students about their experiences at camp to share with you below.

I took a huge risk going to the top of the giant swing and it felt scary before it started, while I was falling and swinging it felt amazing and afterwards I felt proud of myself! - Maddie 3A The food was better than I expected. I don’t necessarily like chicken but the chicken schnitzel I had on the first night was delicious and the best I have ever had! - Lachie 3D My favourite activity was the Flying fox. Before I went on it I was nervous but when we on it again I went backwards and I have never been on one that long before. I was amazed that I actually did it! - Abby 3B I really liked the damper making because I thought it was going to taste like over cooked bread from an oven. Instead it tasted like a scone but much bigger and yummier. I got a bit homesick on the second night but I had some help and I ended up getting an OK sleep and having a great next day. - Seb 3E I had so much fun when I was on the bus because we got a movie and got to singalong to music as well. I felt a little bit sick on the bus but my friends looked after me. - Poppy 3C The orienteering was my favourite because I was partnered with someone I really liked, Harry and we found every clue and solved the puzzle. Orienteering at Arrabri was fantastic. - Alex 3A

I really liked the ropes course because it challenged me, on some of the obstacles you needed two partners so we had to use teamwork. If you fell you had to go back and start again. I was tired when we finished but happy and proud that I didn’t fall once. I really liked who was in my cabin too because when we got some free time we played games or did some singing and dancing. - Eva 3D My favourite part of camp was doing the ropes course. It was fun being on a cool obstacle course with my friends Tommy E, Teddy and Hunter and I got some good exercise for the day. I didn’t like the damper so much because I over cooked it and it tasted like smoke! - Harvey 3C

I really liked the games room because you got to do all the fun games like pool, table tennis and fuse ball with my friends. The tramp was great, you could jump really high like you were flying! It was hard cooking the damper because I got heaps of smoke in my face but the damper tasted hot and yummy. - Olivia 3E.

  • The climbing wall was really good and I had never been on anything like it. There were lots of 90 degree angles to go around and it was hard but I really liked the challenge and I managed to get the full way around it without falling and not many people could do that. I didn’t really like the orienteering because it was hot and there were too many questions. - Ashton 3B “I really liked the giant swing because I was went to the top and it really scary and then I got excited. When I got in my harness I was nervous but when I was being pulled up I got more scared than nervous. Everyone kept pulling and I didn’t say stop so next thing I was at the top. The instructor released my rope and I felt like I lost my tummy!! The other thing I really enjoyed was making damper because it was really yummy and we cooked it over the fire. It was the first time I had done something like that and I think if you can be safe around fire then everyone should do this activity. I missed my family and when I got home I told them all about camp! I really enjoyed the whole camp, met a lot of new people and made some new friends.” - Maria, 4D “When I got to the top of the giant swing it felt really high and I could see all around me. I didn ’t know when the instructor was going to pull the rope and when he did it felt like the rope was breaking and felt kind of scared and I screamed! Once I just kept swinging I felt the adrenaline going and felt much better. We did a skit night too which I really enjoyed. When it got to the mini show it was really funny because there was a skit where someone kept putting a wet sponge on the seat for a person to sit on. Everyone burst out laughing every time it happened. The food on camp was probably the best I have ever had. We had chicken schnitzels, lasagne, ice cream, pancakes, toast and hash browns and some veggies too. I would recommend most families go to Arrabri camp because they will have a ball of fun with all the activities.” - Caelan, 4D

My favourite part of camp was Skit Night which is where you have to do a funny act with your activity group. In my activity groups we needed 5 volunteers and we needed a teacher so we chose Paul because he has never seen the act before. We got into pairs and I was with Eloise, in the pairs you had to make an act to the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star using bananas and the volunteer you chose would copy you. On the lines up above the world so high you would stand

up and the volunteer would do the same. While the volunteer was standing up Hamish got a wet sponge and put it on the volunteer’s chair. When the volunteer sat down they would sit on the wet sponge. I thought the act my group did was funny but could be a bit embarrassing for the volunteers. An act that I enjoyed watching as the act that the teachers did at the end of the night. The teachers acted some simple steps to making a house with words to say. They made Jackson be the fire and he had to lie down in front of the teachers, he had to say crackle, crackle fire… Suddenly Heli ran in yelling WHERE IS THE FIRE!? She tipped a bucket of water all over Jackson and everyone was laughing. Skit Night was my favourite activity. – Claudia 4B On Monday, the 28th of October, 2019, I, Hamish Thomlinson, went to Arrabri Lodge for Grade 4 camp. When I went on the bus I was really excited! I sat next to one of my BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST friends, Maisie. We talked the whole way to Arrabri. Half way through the trip, we stopped, at Lillydale Lake. I went crazy on the big swing. Lots of people went on it at the same time and screamed a lot. When we got back onto the bus, I saw who my cabin mates were: Alex C, Liam H, Liam O, Adam Barlow, Aden Cross and Oscar Hepworth.

  • When we got there, we had a little tour of the place and my favourite part was when we saw the trampoline. After that we were shown to our cabins. I distinctly remembered that I was in cabin 20. All the food was delicious! We had chicken for dinner and it was heavenly… the whole time I was eating dinner I was thinking about how much I missed my family… I sat on a table with Izzy and Lucy. Lucy has been my friend since grade 1, and Izzy was the first person I met at school. That night we went on a NIGHT WALK! We had to find the letters on the trees, and they had little letters on the corner of it. When we got to the end we roasted some marshmallows. I wished they were s’mores.. (A sugar filled sandwich thing. Ingredients and procedure! Put a biscuit on a table, then put chocolate sauce on the biscuit, then put on a roasted marshmallow, then choc sauce, then biscuit). Camp was AWESOME! – Hamish 4B

Regional Athletics After being rained out recently, the Southern Metropolitan Region Athletics was held at Cranbourne on Monday 21st October. Hampton was well represented with multiple competitors in each age group. Starting the day was Chloe Bonner in the 9/10 Girls 1500. The girls started at a very fast pace, with Chloe methodically working her way through the field to finish a strong 7th. Chloe’s time of 5min 53 seconds is a new school record and even more impressively, it was her Personal Best by a huge 16 seconds! Well done Chloe. Our hurdlers were next, with Justin Wei in the 11 year old boys and Leon Scaunich in the 12/13 boys. Justin was in a fast heat finishing 4th. Leon unfortunately clipped a hurdle and ended up a fast finishing 3rd in his heat. Well done boys. Lily Cahill’s first event was the 9/10 girls Discus. She had three very consistent throws, with her best of 25.13m surpassing her previous school record. She finished 2nd and has qualified for the State Champs, well done Lily! Lily’s second event was the shot put. Again she had three consistent throws with the best of 7.24m placing her 5th overall. Justin’s second event was the triple jump. He had three great jumps with his best being 9.57m, placing him 1st overall and qualifying for the State Championships. Well done Justin! Ashton Shingles was our competitor in the MC 100m. He ran a great race finishing 2nd in his age group. Ashton also competed in the MC 200m running very well to finish 2nd in his age group. Our final event was the boys 4x100m 12/13, consisting of Zac McKenna (injured, replaced on the day by Justin Wei), William Smith, Leon Scaunich and Kristof Hoffman. The boys have spent many hours practising their changes at school in the lead up and it was reflected in their performance on the day. They won their heat by 25m, coming third overall with a new school record of 54.31 sec-onds. Well done boys! Nick Fisher PE & Sports Specialist
