Sucker

UNIT 3: LOVE AND BETRAYEL KEY QUESTIONS LESSON 10 a\The first noticeable characteristic of Southern Gothic Tradition is the theme of love and loss. The story is based around Pete’s feelings and reaction to loving and losing his first crush Maybelle. This also extends on to the loss of Sucker after he developed a liking for him. The second noticeable theme is innocence. Both Pete and Sucker lose their innocence but Sucker is actually used a symbolization of this theme entirely unlike Pete. Sucker starts off as a caring and loving youthful twelve years old who adores Pete so much that he hugs him while he sleeps and looks forwards to seeing Pete throughout the entire day and sharing his stories. Pete describes his face as “wide- open eyes and ears sticking out and his mouth never quit shut, had the look of a person who is surprised and expecting something swell,” As the story goes on you slowly see Sucker lose his innocence and positive outlook on things. This leads right into the third Southern Gothic tradition, the grotesque. Sucker begins as an innocent looking kid with nothing but a small thin pale kid with a joyful face joy and wonder in his facial expression. However after the pain he endures he begins to have a grotesque change, the wide-open eyes became narrow after being shouted at. His joyful expression slowly turns into a half sneering look and he grows so fast that he becomes as tall as Pete. He also develops heavier and bigger bones. The most grotesque change however is his eye. His eyes go from innocent and full of wonder to as Pete described “His eyes makes me almost believe that if Sucker could he would kill me.” b\ Sucker is a real person; he is used to symbolize and show the transformation of Pete better, Sucker is not a psychological need however. During my reading I saw several pieces of evidence to show this. The first piece of evidence is Suckers past. Sucker is an orphan who is Pete’s cousin. Most psychological manifestations tend to be vague with no background. One example of this is Tyler Durden from Fight Club. Tyler met the main character on a plane but never had much of a past. This is due to the fact that they are created to fill a need.

During my reading I saw several pieces of evidence to show this. The first piece of evidence is Suckers past. Sucker is an orphan who is Petes cousin. Most psychological manifestations tend to be vague with no background. One example of this is Tyler Durden from Fight Club. Tyler met the main character on a plane but never had much of a past. This is due to the fact that they are created to fill a need.Another reason I see Sucker as a breathing, living person is because he is seen by others. Sucker might be a bit of a loner but there are people he is around other than Pete. Petes mom gives him a bottle of cod liver oil when he is sick. This is one example of his interactions with others. Pete also states in the second last paragraph, We never speak except when we have to before the family. Sucker also has friends over to hangout in his room. None of my childhood imaginary friends had friends other than me so how could Sucker be imaginary. The last piece of evidence Carson McCullers provides to show Sucker is real is his independence. Sucker does several things without Pete. This is not a trait that is possessed by a psychologically manifested character. This is shown throughout several parts of the story. One example is when Pete and Sucker stay up speaking; Sucker tells Pete how he is trying to build a canoe. He also explains how the children down the block wont let him join the football team. Suckers independence and past mixed with the fact that he interacts with others proves that he cannot be created by Pete.
