To promote knowledge, enjoyment, cultivation, and conservation of cacti and other succulent plants among its members, other individuals and organizations throughout West-Central Colorado SEPTEMBER PROGRAM - MEMBER SHOW & TELL The Regular Meeting of the Chinle Cactus and Succulent Society will meet September 10th at the Western Colorado Botanical Garden in the library at 6:30 pm. This meeting will feature one of our more popular programs where members bring in their plants to show, talk about, ask questions about and get answers (hopefully) about specific problems the plant (or its owner) is having. This is a great time to take advantage of the wealth of expertise in the Society to learn tricks of the trade, new ideas about watering, fertilizing, grafting, repotting, wintering over, and a host of other topics. Bring your plants (happy or otherwise) and be prepared for a fun evening of “Show and Tell”. (Just remember, what happens at a CC&SS meeting, stays at the CC&SS!!! So no worries. Anything goes.) AUGUST GARDEN PARTIES “Many Hands Makes Light Work” What a crowd of gardeners showed up for the Garden Party on Saturday, August 8th, at the Botanical Gardens—and indeed it was a crowd that was needed to clean up and de-weed, de-sedum, and de-bindweed the garden from too much rain and cancelled garden parties due to the rain. Gardeners included Maryann & Loren Benoit, Julie Bursi, Joy Bush, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Lynn Dunham, Janet & Bill Hassell, Kate Kossa, Deb & Glenn Mallory, Kathy Murdock, Kenton Seth, and Shari Skeie. As you can see from the “before” and “after” pictures, we made quite a dent in the overgrowth, but of course there are always more weeds to pull! Thanks to all who came out for a great work session! MORE LOVELY OPUNTIAS! Tom Burrows was hard at work earlier this summer and captured a dazzling array of blooming opuntiis in his totally xeric landscape.

PROGRESS AT MATH & SCIENCE CENTER DISPLAY

The Cactus and Succulent Display at the Math & Science Center continues to evolve with the addition of new plants and the removal of some that didn’t do well there. If you haven’t visited the display, you really need to make an effort to do so. It is a lovely collection of beautiful plants in a very nice setting. Below are close-ups of two of the lovely specimens in the display

AUGUST GARDEN PARTY #2 A nice group of Chinle gardeners showed up for the August 22nd Garden Party at the CSU Extension Garden at the Mesa County Fairgrounds. Participating were Tom Burrows, Maryann & Loren Benoit, Don Campbell, Deb & Glenn Mallory, Kathy Murdock and Kate Weisenburg.

Maryann reports that there is “Lots more work to do. Hardly made a dent today.” The next Garden Party is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th, at the WC Botanical Gardens. Do try to come and help “pretty up” the gardens! Thanks to Loren Benoit, who took all these photos!

CRUMP’S TOUR SCORES A HIT, AGAIN!

Fifteen Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society members ventured to the Crump’s Greenhouse in Buena Vista for another terrific tour on Saturday, August 29.

The fun began after checking into the Super 8 motel and walking to dinner in historic downtown Buena Vista to the Asian Palette. The squid salad was relished by everyone—except Maryann Benoit who couldn’t bring herself to try it!

Saturday morning we were greeted by Mike and Rita Crump (left) for a morning of “oohing and aahing” over amazing cacti and succulent specimens, and doing some shopping, of course,

We enjoyed lunch in Mike and Rita’s back yard, and afterward, Rita took members on a road tour to view cacti in habitat.

After the tour, the group finished up the weekend with dinner at Los Galagoris mexican restaurant. Then Hasta la Vista and back to Grand Junction!

Many thanks to Maryann and Loren Benoit for organizing the tour, Don Campbell for setting things up with Crumps, Loren, Glenn Mallory and Bill Hassell for retrieving lunches from City Market, and members for participating! We will all look forward to another trip to Crumps in the future!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Travelocity Gnome, Siegfried (aka “Siggy”) was seen at most of the Crump’s Tour events, keeping an eye on members to keep them out of trouble.

However, he missed the Cemetery visit. Who knows what he might have prevented!?!
