Q&A Session with Roger & Lou Ann:
Q: How long have you been coming to EngAge Wellness?
LA: We have both been coming here since December of last year.
Q: What activities do you participate in?
LA: I started the Diabetes Prevention Program and mainly use the fitness room. Taking classes
is a great way to get to know everyone better too.
R: I mainly participate in the fitness room. I use the computerized bicycles and the treadmill. I do
challenge myself to increase the workouts week after week. I also work on the weight machines
every other day & have increased the resistance I lift on each of the machines.
Q: What’s your favorite aspect of EngAge Wellness?
LA: My favorite part is meeting people, the great staff, and new opportunities to learn about
health & fitness.
R: I enjoy seeing everyone each day that come into the center. It is fun to interact with the
different groups of people who come in on different days or at various times of the day.
Q: How has your motivation to exercise changed, since you started coming here?
LA: I did NOT have a regular exercise program before coming to EngAge and after seeing good
results I am very motivated to stay with the diet I learned in the Diabetes Prevention Program &
keep exercising on a daily basis.
R: When I first came to the center, I was only interested in doing the same workout that I had
done for many years. The staff made a few suggestions which I followed using different
machines & doing resistance training. By incorporating these changes, I am now strongly
motivated toward continued physical fitness, weight loss, and eventually maintaining my goal
weight. I have been fortunate to have the guidance of the EngAge staff who have helped me
lose 50 pounds so far.
Q: What advice would you give other EngAge participants, to help them achieve their
fitness goals?
LA: I would say to set goals and keep yourself accountable by writing it down daily. Push
yourself and don’t give up!
R: My advice to any other EngAge member would be to find a way that EngAge can be a
lifestyle change. Either by social interactions, a physical fitness regime, a class offered by the
EngAge professionals, or any other activity that is available. Whatever the choice may be, it is
important that the activity can easily become part of your life.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month!
Diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia and is divided into two types. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.
If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn't able to keep up and can't make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.
Signs of diabetes: The best way to detect diabetes is to have a blood sugar test. See your doctor if you have any combination of these symptoms: slow healing; excessive thirst and increased urination; tingling or numbness; unexplainable weight loss.
The symptoms of diabetes have been known since the first century but until 1921, the disease remained untreatable. When Canadian doctors Banting and Best discovered insulin, they found the only way to lower a diabetic’s dangerously high blood sugar levels. There is no cure for diabetes but thanks to modern science it is no longer a mortal disease, if treated when the signs emerge. If insulin, medication, weight loss, physical activity and changes in eating result in normal blood glucose, that means their diabetes is well controlled and their risk of developing diabetes complications is much lower.

Diabetes Prevention Program
Led by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
Thursdays, beginning 1/14/16 2:30—3:30PM
(Weekly for f irst 16 weeks, then monthly for 8 months)
This Diabetes Prevention Program features an approach that is proven to
prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Our one-year program is designed to help you make lifestyle changes to improve your
overall health and reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. By improving food
choices and increasing physical activity, you can lose 5-7% of your body weight. If
you have pre-diabetes, these lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of developing type
2 diabetes by more than 50% (71% in people over 60)!
