Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo(1907-1954)

Frida Kahlo was one of the most important artists of modern times. She was famous for painting self-portraits (pictures of herself ), but she was particularly famous for painting women as strong people.

Frida Kahlo painted a lot because she contracted a disease called Polio at a young age. After that, she was involved in a tram accident, causing many crushed and broken bones. She spent three months in a full body cast recovering from the tram accident. Both illnesses meant that Frida Kahlo had to get used to being alone. She painted self-portraits because she had to spend so much of her time alone.

she spent a lot of her life in pain. Some days the pain was better than others. She had 35 operations and spent a lot of time in bed.

She painted in very bright colours that reminded her of the Mexican people that she belonged to.

Her paintings sometimes show animals, which she was very fond of.

She was also well known for her striking appearance. She wore bright colours, flowers in her hair and big jewellery. She wore long, bright skirts to cover her legs, which were damaged by Polio.

Making Clay Monkeys

What You Will Need:

• Tablecloths• Boards• Rolling pins• Clay tools for finer details • Aprons• Clay • Monkey pictures

1. Roll up sleeves and wear aprons.

2. Protect the table with a tablecloth. Get a board as your working space.

3. Fetch a piece of clay that has been cut for you: approximately the size of a block of

butter.

4. Press, knead and roll the clay. This will be very difficult at first, but the more you

work it, the softer and warmer it will become. Then it will be easier to manipulate

(work with).

Instructions:

5. Split your clay into three parts, one part slightly larger than

the other two. The larger part will be the torso (body).

6. Roll one of the smaller pieces (the head) in a circular motion

with the palm of your hand.

7. Roll the torso (body) piece in a circle, then squish slightly.

8. Join the head to the torso by using your finger tips to mould

the clay together. Do this carefully. Any gaps could cause the

head to pop off as it dries.

Instructions:

9. Use your last piece of clay to make the other body parts for

the monkey, such as the ears, feet and tail. Use your little

finger to push holes into the head for the eye sockets. Make

eye balls to go into the eye sockets.
