The main reason I picked up #7(for 95Q) wa sI to find out what was going on in your scene . Youguys looked like you might be authorities . Well ,'guys don't doubt that you are, indeed, authorities ,but I learned nothing . You may be doing the scen eand the bands a service by promoting what no on e

I can say however II that Boz's one sentence sumation of Alphoniatins' excellent LP was abborent . Not only is Tims 'LP as exciting and vital as any funk/rock/avantI release from either the Heads or King Crimson ,but Boz's quick aumation demonstrated, I believe ,that his desire to review no less than 39 record sin issue 7, disallowed him the opportunity t ogive the record the proper attention it, and an yrecord, deserves .

He's just holding a pen, speaking on behalfof the whole group, as well as vice-versa, andeveryone puts in their part to make the song awhole .SH : What are most of your lyrics about ?B : Politics- not so much democracy .B: More like personal gripes about things we feelare wrong with society . Anti-racist, that kind o fstuff . On the single, Freedom and Apathy, most ofthe song titles are self-descriptive .B: We hit a broad spectrum .P : They'll deal with either personal things ordeal with what's wrong with the system and how thesystem can be changed if we do this or that offe r

Crass has influen-ced us because of their philosophy to be yourself .That's important if you're going to do anythingoriginal . So they have to be the biggest influence.R : I think our lyrics are more influenced thanour music . It's hard to say because even subcon-sciously you may pick up off another band . When you've seen a group only once or twice and they stan dout in your head it must mean something . The Proletariat areone of those bands, internally and externally .

They are quite live and electric onstage giving furthe rimpact to their music and beliefs .

My first telephone conversation with Frank, the group' sguitatist, went smoother than I expected . He said the bandwould be interested in doing an interview .

1 5Our first meeting took place at the Radio Beat Studios i n

Kenmore Square, Boston . The Proletariat was in there that da y

doing some recording for an upcoming Lp . This was the same

studio where much of the Modern Method "This is Boston, Not L .A . "compilation was recorded . The Proletariat have three tracks o nthat Lp plus a fourth on the M .M. follow-up EP . The group alsohas material on the "Distortion Cassette" . The cassette was a

seven song venture of their own doing which was limited to 185,copies. The main purpose of this was to establish themselvesand draw interest to the band on a local level . This, they sai d

seemed to work with the cassette selling out very quickly .The Proletariat are politically-minded and they use th e

band as a vehicle to get across their ideas and philosophy .

None of the members are affiliated with any party . Rick, the

vocalist and main lyricist, said that it would make them to

easy to be labeled .Friends through school, Frank, Peter (bassist), and Ric k

first got together in a S .E. Massachusetts basement in 1980 .At that time, aside from singing, Rick was playing drums, o rrather drum (one snare to be exact) . When the snare broke

they decided they'd better get a drummer and that's when To mentered the picture sometime in 1981 .

The group decided in August of 1982 to do an Lp and re -

ceived two offers . They turned down Modern Method and chos e

to work with an associate of theirs, Lou . Lou is one of th etop engineers at Radio Beat and will be co-producing the Lp .

The record will appear on the group's own independent label .Stress is placed on quality rather than speed as the y

wcn't release any thing until they are fully satisfied .

Naturally no release date has been set but they hope to hav e

it completed by this summer .As I mentioned before, The Proletariat appear on the "Thi s

is Boston . . ." hardcore compilation . The funny thing is tha t

they are not a hardcore band . As a matter of fact they had a

difficult time fitting in anywhere when they made their firs t

appearences . They got caught in the middle with art peoplecalling them hardcore and the hardcore people calling the manything but . Nobody was exactly sure how to label them .

Eventually people adjusted and the band was more easily accepted .

Some club owners refuse to let The ?p roletariat play because the y"didn't like the crowds the band attracts" .

Any similarities between The Proletariat and hardcore may b e

through the guitar work which has a thrashing, distorted soun d

that sometimes buries itself in a static frenzy . The guitarcompliments the strong reinforced rhythm and the loud, clear ,

vocals . Using his whole body , Rick jabs and commands his matte r

-of-factly statements .During the course of our meeting, the interview was in a

formal state only one time that evening . Unfortunately, due t o

tape recorder complications, that part was lost . Most of the

time conversation never lingered long on any particular subject .

Topics ranged from inner-conflicts to the recent state election s

to Rick's graphic interpretation (using pliers) of the life an d

feeding of Terodactos .On or off stage the band comes across honestly, no facade ,

no attitude, no pretense, no fashion for fashion . The Proletar-

iat are serious, but not obsessed . They are open, friendly ,

and well-humored .The Proletariat don't make a point about anything they d o

except their music and their motive for doing it, even then ,

they really don 't talk about that too, to quote an ol d

cliche, they just do it .

PIL. Public Image Limited . Whatever. We were late . Question : If being late is fashion-able, then is being late for a Public Image sho weven more fashionable ?I have a theory that some people are always lateand that they're the ones that say it's fashionableto cover their own bottoms .Anyway, we got there at 10 :45, not at 10 :00 likewe planned, therefore I lost any chance (withinreason) of getting a snug spot up against th estage . The Channel is one of the larger clubs inBoston and its main room was already quite filled .The crowd was really amazing, I'd never seen suc ha variety of people under one roof for one event .And that's what it was, an event . There were alltypes of people around from severe undergroundsorts to average Joes to the Trans Am excess

the redundant Pistolites . And to think they paidten bucks to get in. That price is OK if it wa sNew York, but this is Boston and that's ridiculous .Thanks to Marty Atkins we didn't have to succumbto doorway robbery . Otherwise, I wouldn't havemade it to the club that night (there, I've just-ified my reason for being there .) . I thought itmight be interesting to see John Lydon sing or se ePIL live, but most of all I thought it would beinteresting to see what kind of audience woul dshow up and also put together some kind of thingto keep Boz (our editor) from bothering me all thetime .I felt very lucky when we were informed we were onthe guest list . At their first gig, the Roselandshow in New York, Lydon refused to put Harvey Kei-tel (the movie actor) on the list . You see, Lydon

1 7

had recently been acting with Keitel in Italy on apicture film. Poor Harv .PIL shirts everywhere . And yea, you walking bill-boards, they even had them for sale, whether it wa sPIL's idea or the Channel's (they have a 'souvenir 'shop) remains unknown .It's been about a year since their last gig (remem-ber video and the riot at the Ritz?) . Lydon stillsinge and Levene still plays guitar. Different thistime around are the addition of two-thirds Bria nBrain, Martin Atkins, and Pete Jones, who fill outthe Public Image . Martin, as you might remember ,was their original drummer and has permanently re-joined PIL. Martin had left them on a previou soccasion when agreements that had been made werenot kept . Pete is touring and recording with them ,but his future with the band is not known at thi spoint . Martin and Pete are still part et and willcontinue to be involved with Brian Brain . Jeanett eLee is no longer with PIL since she lost interes tin the project. PIL is pretty much fed up andthrough with video as a medium for their company .Another note, PIL is not on tour as Lydon has note dby calling their gigs "isolated performances" . PILis based in New York . The city thus serves as ahome base when they are giving these "isolated per-formances" . The group prefers to return home afterevery one or two gags . In between these performan-ces (and previous to the Roseland gig) PIL had bee nin the studio recording .The opening act tonight was the Young and Useless ,an early-teen New York foursome which includes th eson of the guy from ROIR cassettes . Big Deal, right ?They gave an anarchic, antagonistic, insultiveperformance doing a variety of mashed-up covers an doriginals like "Kill PIL" . Hardcore/Pistols/Lydonproteges? They gave an encore regardless of audienc eopinion and returned once more, without instruments ,for an encore which consisted of total verba labuse .PiL engaged the use of a large Winnebago campe rwhich served as transportation and a dressing room .It brought them to the Channel and scooted themaway only seconds after the performance concluded .The stage had three large panels covered with wha tappeared to be huge white tiles . It seemed like along time before the PiL logo was projected ont othe left tile section and the band climbed onstage .By the way, word has it that the logo will soon bereplaced by a new one . The crowd began to swell an dshove and all that bullshit . In a typical cynicaltone Lydon asked the audience "Did you come hereto be punk or did you come here to have fun? Idon't know, but I came here to have fun . . .don'tknow about you ." They started off with a new numbe rand then proceeded to play a mixture off their firs tand second LP's . After one of the songs ended, somegirls in the front started yelling "Johnny, Johnny" .Lydon replied with disgust, 'You cunts are so lame 'and he continued to the crowd, Well we're jus tgoing to make up some stuff, you'll still serve thesame purpose' . They then jumped into a semi-funky

number. This is where Pete's influence in the bandbecame evident . Levene switched back and forth fromguitar to synth with even transitions . 'Mad Max "was probably the name of the song since that wa spractically all Lydon was screaming throughout thething aside from phrases like "the open road" and'burning gasoline ° . Part way through, Lydon lookedacross the audience and asked if anyone had seen'Road Warrior' . His next action was a grin as hegave a thumbs-up sign showing his favor of the film .Public Image played very well (let's not forgetLydon's imitation of the funky chicken) and they' dhave been great to dance to had there been moreroom. Say maybe a small club with a crowd of 20(my ideal) . John Lydon came off very honest andseemed like he very much enjoyed performing, doingwhat he was doing. I had never seen PiL orgLydbefore and I was glad I did in a way . What othe rpeople might see them as, is beyond my oomprehen.sion . They are good, but they certainly aren't Go d

or Heroes or the greatest thing in the world . Noone is .After the seventh long song, PiL left the stageand never returned for an encore . Somehow I ex-pected it . The stage lights went down and the DJbegan spinning records, and the crowd still stoodaround as if some great miracle were to happen andthey'd reappear .PiL was really disappointed with the show tha tnight . The band anticipated a more intimate settin gdue to the smaller venue (small?) and they ha dgood feelings about it. Well, the Boston audienc eturned out to be too concerned with being cool andless energetic (thus no encore) than the Roseland

BUSINESS AT HAND

Lydon and Levene are constantly reorganizing theirworking structures . Recently they have joined witha man who remains behind the scene, Bob Tulipan .Together they have formed Multi Image Corporatio n(MIC) which is the parent oompany of Public ImageLimited (PIL) and Public Enterprise Productions(PEP) .MIC is the main company involved in various crea-tive projects . This includes films, satellite TV,and computer graphics . MIC will become involvedwith the graffiti artist, Futura 2000-, and als oplan to provide their computers for use by medica lresearch, among other things .PEP will assist PIL by taking care of engagements ,recording, and other musical-type functions .PIL are now with and will release records on thePEP label . They do have an obligation left wit hVirgin records for an LP. Whether "Commercial Zone "will be on the PEP or Virgin label has not ye tbeen determined .Also under the PEP umbrella will be Brian Brain andCowboys International, although the names of th elabels may be different for each . Brian Brain's newset-up with PEP will give them the financial backing ,support, and freedom they felt Secret Records didnot sufficiently provide . PIL obviously has the samefeelings toward Virgin .Stiff Records will handle distribution for any PEPproducts. That's all they will do- Stiff is justa middleman and is in no way involved with the com-pany .And that's the story so far . . .

gig where the audience danced around more and gavethe band more feedback . Also, the Channel's stagewas too small and only a third of the actual se twas used, due to the lack of space . The ceiling wastoo low, and Lydon got a kick out of yanking dow none of the Channel's tiles during their performance .PiL had one more gig to do in Boston before theyreturned to New York . It was an all-ages gig thefollowing Saturday, same place. Martin was reall yexcited about that one . The all-ages show did turnout better for both parties, despite the 2 hourwait in the rain that the crowd was subjected to .Lydon made comments during the show referring tothe other "audience"and seemed much more please dwith this one . PiL played more songs at that per-formance and also included an encore .PiL is planning future dates in Canada and the onthe West Coast as well as others . Would they dareplay Florida? Would it be worth it ?After they complete their isolated performance sKeith Levene will be getting married .In a brief interview, Martin said the reason the ychose to tour at this time was not because of an

LP release, although there is one in the works ,titled 'Commercial Zone" . I'm sure Lydon was get-ting tired of sitting around in his N .Y. loft .One can only wonder if Public Image has becomeLydon's own irony (real profound, eh?) .

(last minute update by Boz )--- OK the latest as we go to press is that thefuture of Stiff America is questionable- sup-posidly they only have one person left on theirN .Y . staff(?) so who knows what the new PI Lshit will be coming out on over here(?) . Also I

's song . Bob the singer didn' tmove much- nobody could top the lead slut- damn .The best part of the set was when 2 cops tried tobust up the show around 2 :00 . They walked rightup to Bob in the middle of a song- the Roac hMotel kept playing anyway . Stupid cops . The end .EPILOGUE : Carmen finally got to pass out . We triedto stea beer after 2 :00 but they lock the freezersin Gainesville . The Roach Motel have a single outcalled "Roach & Roll"- '(reviewed elsewhere- Ed .) .I don't know where the Sluts 12" is - Carmentried to find out but failed . But I guess if yousee onr it's worth buying to hear "Mom's Cunt" -maybe even just to have an album that says "Mom' sCunt" on it . Slam Rest 83' is being planned forsome time in Feb . Hopefully more locals will goto the next one . If you go, remember to stock upup on beer b4 2 :00 ouz of that stupid rule .

L .A . UPDATED SORT OF BY AL FLIPSIDEI'm writing this at the end of a year- o r

better yet the beginning of a new one . For lastyear in L .A . the name of the game was "a neW plac eto play" . We went through more clubs, halls, bars ,Roller Rinks etc last year than you could imagine .The big loss was of course the Whiskey, but jus tas important to the hardcore scene were the loss -es of Godzillas, Dancing Waters and the Galaxy .The final place we lost was the Galaxy in Fuller-town (closed on Dec . 30 on the eve of a BlackFlag/Husker Du gig) . Although I can't say I wil lmiss the place, it is a bad blow to bands wh oneed a place to play and fans who desperatly wan tto see a show (or hangout and get drunk whatever) .The Galaxy was atypical in that no riot or clu bdamage closed the place- the Police did it allby themselves . When complaints came in of minor sdrinking around the neighborhood, the police over-reacted- they came in wanting to show thei rstrength, (sound familar? what's been going o nat Finders-ED .)and became very intimidating whic hmade for lots of friction and lots of arrests andsome bloodshed . The arrests and " police disturb-ances" were proof the authorities needed to clos ethe place down . You can't fucking win .

Other places that have had shows lately wer ethe Cove Theater in Redondo Beach (which ende dup getting trashed and then closed), the HappyTimes Holler Rink in Watts(with problems with the

neighbors closing it to punk) , all kinds of onenighters at bars like H .J .'s (who changed theirname to Los Amigos for Some" one offs) and th eT-Bird Roller Rink in Whittier. The T-Bird hashad some great shows lately with L .A .'s big namestars like TSOL etc . . . It hasn't been closed bu thas sporadic shows for some reason . . . That's theeeplace for hardcore as it stands now, funny thin gis every week there are a bunch of shows with HCbands, there's always someplace ,

Now if you're not a HC band, you've got itmade . The Anti-Club which recently re-opened isserving up feasts of bands that one might conside rsimply "punk" . Leaving Trains, 100 Flowers, Min-utemen, Sacchrine Trust, Green On Red, all thehorror/death bands and maybe a few H6 bands(HCgot banned at the Hari-Kari gig when some jerksgot out of hand) . The Anti-Club is happening .Other bands that would be playing there but ar etoo big already(like the Bangles and Dream Syn-dicate) are playing the Roxy (which banned HCthe same time the Whiskey closed) . The 3 O'Clock.(used to be the Salvation Army) seem to be sta-gnating, not playing anywhere with their new pro-fessional lineup. Another place is the Music Mach-ine which won't book any HC (again after trou-bles) but seems more apt to book shitty new wavebands, trying to cash in on the "Wongs" (a localclub chain that books only iew wave with an rnuvh

25edges) success .

On the record front, you probably all kno wthis, but the best releases out latley are fromthe Desendents with "Milo Goes to College", th eVandals with "Peace Through Vandalism", the Angr ySamoans "Back From Samoa" and the many compil-ations . Most recently is the new Volume of Rod-ney on the Roq- with a side A packed with somegreat new bands that are getting exposure the yneed- (check out Catch 22 or Ill Repute!) . SSTwould have a few discs out, like their new ol drecordings on a two record album but they ar ehaving problems with their old team mates Uni-corn, that's probably holding up the Minutemen' s"What Makes a Man Start Fires" too . Too bad . Acouple other great releases I forgot are Shat-tered Faith's "Live" LP and the incredibly hard-core/fast LP by Anti . That's the stuff I like ,but htere are a million others . A lot of peo-ple say it was a bad season for L .A . releasesbut the good ones are out there, ya just gott alook.

As for tours to look forward too- well, thesual bands who tour will do it again . CH3 ar e

out there right now, Black Flag will start soon ,ocial Distortion alwa s sa the 're _onna tour

they always say they're gonn put out an album to o(at least I know they ARE recording it thi stime) . A lot of the second stringers should hav etheir shit together by summer . . . (like Bad Re-ligion, Vandals, Sin 34 etc . . . . )

One last thing I'd like to add is that eventhough there arn't a whole lot of gigs (actuall ythere are but there's no steady "club") the gigs

we have have been of high quality(there are ex -ceptions!) . A gig last month with Social Distor-tion and Seven Seconds was one of the best gig sI've been to in a while . The slam in a circle ,whirl-pool dance that they do back east is catch-ing on and it seems like a lot more people areparticipating in the festivities, "hey it doesn' thurt as much people are proclaiming . I see kid sget so wrapped up in it that they forget to ge ton stage to daace or do dives . It's about timewe learned some new steps!!!! Not Only that butit seems that finally people are getting off thetrip that "you have to be macho to be hardcore " .Everything is alive and well in LA- I predictin the future you will see slot more meaning-ful bands gain popularity, back to the subject a thand and away from the distractions and sidetracks

Yes ladies and gentlemen it's time for morenews briefs while I continue to make new friendsand enemies (mostly the latter) . . . lets see wh ocan I possibly insult first within this greatSouth Florida scene? Well let me first start ou tby telling you bout a worthy project called Pro,j-ekt Electronic South Florida being put togethe rby Sam, the editor of Alternative Rhythms . He' slooking for tapes by all you Ralf and Floriansout there who are playing so called experimentalelectronic music for a special cassette comp-ilation . Well I suppose you all know what Ithink about all these electro synth bop blee pbands so I will keep quiet but hey if this is you rthing you should get in touch with Sam at 895 1SW 53 St ., Cooper City, Fl . 33328 . Of Corse wehad a real similar idea awhile back when we wer egoing to put out a Florida punk/noise cassettecompilation but as you know that never got of fthe ground . Does anyone have any money theywish to invest in a great wonderful progec tlike th's? On the record -ing scene Morbid Opera are going to be doing somedemos shortly for an EP which will probably beappearing on Sublapse records - is that stillright? They've really come along way and the yget better each time they play out . Alot of peo-ple down here hate them which I think is great -they really polarize their audience with the grea tracket that they produce . I hate to say it bu tthis is a band you'll either love or hate . Theredoesn't seem to be much of a middle ground wit hthem . Without a doubt they are the most originalsounding band in South Florida today . By the waysince our last issue they have gotten a new drum-mer who is Carmen formerly of the much talked a-bout but never seen Archiac Conflict . . . . Wel lDavid Camp is finally putting his new band to-gether, Dachau (didn't we mention this a yea rago?) and it also includes former Abuser and Xglitter kid Matt on guitar plus Mike Shannon ondrums . Their material is still being worked on andis not really easily catagorized so we'll giveyou a better run down as things happen . I finallygot to see South Flavoids second rockabilly band ,the Spinouts . In their favor is a pretty loosegarage sound but they still rely too heavily ona few real lame covers that will have to go . Un-fortunetly I'm all rockabillied out ever sinc ethe Stray Cats have made it big . Thank god fo rthe Cramps! Of course good ole' Larry Joe and theboys are still kickin' around town and they're theclosest thing to the real shit this side of th eMacon County line . . . . You know what I find reallyamazing is that with the number of HC punx dow nhere that they're aren't more HC bands? What a -bout Screaming and the Fits you ask? Things mus tbe pretty sorry if all we've got our those mind-less wonders . I hate to put them down cause at

least they're doing something but they're wors ethan the most retrogressive heavy metal band youcould think of- those guys have absolutley nothin gto say. Their key word (they use it in every oth-er sentence)is "radical" which from what I've beenable to pick up stands for "fast" . Yes indeed"Loud Radical Rules" and hey guys Breshnev isdead OK? Of course Mario from Menstrual Cycles isstill around awaiting on some news from No Futur erecords in England . I must admit that there's lit-tle I agree with Mario on . He definetly should havebeen born in England- he hates all American band sexcept his own- but I've really got to hand it tothe guy he definetly sticks to his guns no matte rhow much flack he gets for it . Cheers Mario! !Let's see who's next what about the Eat? OKthe latest Eat newz sincelast issue is that Kennyis out of the band and good ole' Glenn has had achange of heart so he's back in the band on bass .Actually this band has definetly been pissing meoff latley- I must agree with what David Camp ha ssaid- if they don't care anymore how can they ex-pect their fans to? Obviously this isn't every-thing but it's a major part of the problem . What' sthe point in doing things half assed- why evenbother? Most of us know they still "have it" butit's real obvious that the "commitment" isnot there . The Eat have also been my favorit eband down here- unfortunetly I can no longer sa ythat is true . Why should I care if they don't .Hopefully they'll prove me wrong- we'll have tosee I guess . Charlie Pickett and the Eggs for-tunetly don't suffer from the same problems asthe Eat and they're planning on doing some aroun dthe country touring shortly and are eventuall yhoping to wind up in New York so if you're read-ing this from out of the state keep your eyes ou tfor these ace rock n' rollers . . . . Staff member ,Craig Vague has a demo tape out, "Isle of Bun "which is self produced synth music- it's got 3tunes on it and well . . . Angie likes it! My fav-orite is a short instrumental piece that sound slike YMG . Hey Craig how come you didn't add m yfavorite "Temper Temper (Angst and Lager)" t oit? Craig is also putting out a poetry collect-ion along with 1/2 of Morbid Opera (Lisa an dLibby) which will be called "We Sat Beside th eIdle Sea" . It will also include art and photos .Write to Craig at 127 Sea Island Ter ., Boca Raton ,Fl . 33431 for info on his tapes or poetry OK ?Other happenings are the Einstein Riceboys ( adecieving name since one of the boys is actuallya girl) who for some insane reason have temp-orarily moved down here from Milwaukee . Actuallythe reason is not all that insane cause they'vedoing a digital recording here for their ne wLP. Yes Miami is definetly becoming a recordingmecca of sorts so we'd like to invite othe rnational and international bands to join notonly the RicePeople but some of the other supe rstars who record down here like the Bee Gees,

Stephen Stills, and KC & the Shoeshine Band .Speaking of recording there's a cassette zinestarting of southeastern "new wave", punk ,underground, and experimental music and they arelooking for contributions from Florida . So i fyou got some shit on tape and you'd like othe rpeople to hear it get in touch with Arthur Davisc/o WREN Box 32743 Atlanta, Ga . 30332 . Other newsis that Crucial T (formerly Crucial Truth . ., for-merly the Throbs) are changing thei name agai nwhich I suppose is no news isn't it . Anyway thisweek's name is Black Anthemn 0 . OK Sure??!? !I might also mention that Jery Williams(BloodClot and N . Carolina's Cigaretz) has also Joine dthe band on second guitar and they will be mo-ving back to New York shortly . Hey did any -

one catch those reunion gigs by the Weasels? The ywere really hot- they never sounded so good bac kin the old days . Besides such old faves as " IWant Head Till I'm Dead" and "Commie Homo " theyfeatured Billy's girlfriend Elaine en a few songsand what a difference she makes! I've heard thatElaine and Billy will be starting their ownband shortly . . . let's hope so! One last thing Iwant to mention is that WDNA 88 .9 FM has a fe wnew shows- prime time hours no less! On Tuesda yit's Poptones with Cary N . Case (noon-2PM), Wed .(noon-2PM) it's the Pure Rhythm show with HowardDavis and he'll be playing reggae and dance tunes ,and last but not least on Thursday(same hours )Johnny Quest will be playing HC, punk, and thras hstuff . Check it out . Well that's about it- hopewe didn't leave too many of youse out . Peace .

ROCKIN' IT by Larry C . (Ministry of CultureIndependent Communications Systems )

1982's most essentially vital slab of vinylcame with nary a trace of masturbatory guita rsolos, monotonous rhthym box crack-cracks,t or hyp-ocritical whinings. "The Message' was (is) THE re -cord of 1982, if not of the whole decade so far .Freeze from the opening, "Don't push me cause I' mclose to the edge . . ." No 'Party hearty til you Jus tdon't care" on this disc, uh-huh-huh . Flash'sturntable work provides the movement, Cowboy' srapping provides the momentum . Grandmaster Flas hand the Furious Five are not a band . . . no instru-ments, Just one deadly DJ mixing split seconddancey breaks from other records for five voice sto rap and double rap over . If you want socia lrelevance you can dance to (or if you want to hav eyour cake and eat it, too. . .), give this recor dyour undivided attention (you might also want tocheck out Brother D and Collective Effort) .

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's follow-up to The Message" was 'Scorpio' . It sounds like"Planet Rook" (DJ Afrika Bambaata and Soul Soni cForce) or 'Pack Jam or . .or . . . the whole lot soundslike Kraftweranyway, only "Scorpio' has all therapping done through a vocoder . The result is am-using, sort of what Cabaret Voltaire might soundlike if their words rhymed and if they lived uptowninstead of London.

The latest from one of the oldest, Bootsy' sRubber Band's "Body Slam" is post-civilizatio nfunk . Music to move to AFTER the bomb drops . Ifthe movie "Road Warrior" had a decent soundtrack ,this would no doubt be part of it .

uptown at some high school auditorium . Can't stopit(LAST MINUTE UPDATE)

Grace Jones' latest LP, "Living My Life" ,like all her other albums, has two worthwhile cuts (and a lot of standard ones . In this case, "Nippl eto the Bottle" and "My Jamaican Guy" are th eworthwhile ones . "Nipple . . . ." sounds slot like"Pull Up to the Bumper" . . . this woman is the nazzdaddy o . . . no talent, probably no mind of her ow n Just a pretty face that her manager has mold -ed into one of the most distinct images in musictoday . Her performances are literally "one man "shows . . . her band consists of a tape loop. . . andan entourage of very campy, well muscled, wel ldressed roadies . More music from the Judy Garlan dof the Eighties . . . .

The #1 staff favorite of 82 0 was the DreamSyndicate's "Days of Wine and Hoses" LP . THE DREAM SYNDICATE "THE DAYSOF WINE AND ROSES "(RUBY LP)---This LP is highly derivative (the Vel-vets and Television specifically) but fuck it ,cause that's like saying all post-punk rock is der-ivative of the Sex Pistols . . .right? This LP zeroe sdirectly into the appropriate nerve center in mycranium ("I dreamed last night that I was born 100 0years ago . . . " ) so I can't help but like it . TheSyndicate steals from all the right sources andmanage to add a little something, and the resul tis one of the best lyrically introspective guitardominated elpees to come around in a long while . .One of the year's best, for sure . (BOZ )

ANGRY SAMOANS"BACK FROMSAMOA"(BAD TRIPLP)---"3 Great Chords, 5 Sick Minds" ; the ads jus tabout sum it up- this is great rock n' roll witha sick sense of humor as funny as anything theDead Kennedys or Ramones ever did- probabl ymoreso . (It might not be all their doing- "Homo-sexual" is credited to Jerry Falwell, everyone' sfave sicko .) Great lyrics, and music that's a saggressive, fast, and tight as it has to be . Nicecover, too . Highly recommended .

YOUNG WEASELS "TWIST & BURN" . YOUR FUNERA L"I W4NT TO BE YOU" (both LOCAL ANESTHETIC 7 "EP's)--- Two Denver bands which just goes t oprove that there's more to that city thanthe Broncos . The Weasals are from the jo yDivision/Cure etc . post punk school of thoughtand there must be at least 200 bands over heregoing after that sound and some do it bette rthan others and this is competent enough but i tstill doesn't make me do somersult flips inthe air. I like Your Funeral slot better eve nthough they've since split up but you probablynever knew that they had gotten together inthe first place . Your Funeral are 33 girls andtheir record is a great slice of 80's psych-edelica . "I Want To Be You" is a more straight -forward rocker while "Final Abyss" does upmost of those West Coast psycho-horror hand s(Super Heroines take note) one better . Goodstuff . Write to L .A . c/o Wax Trax 638 E 1 3Ave . Denver, CO 80203 .

(BOZ )

D .O .A . "WAR ON 45" (ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES 1 2 " EP)--Straight forward punk rock on side one with a bi tof rock'n'roll mix . A decent offering from thi sestablished band. Side 2 features two diversions -"War In The East " , a not-so-hot reggae cover, an d"War", another cover which should never have bee nattempted- how can you possibly top Edwinn Starr?(D .O .A . fans probably already own this) Good, bu tnot great or essential . (BOZ)

ROACH MOTEL "ROACH & ROLL" (DESTROY 7 " EP)---RoachMotel are currently the winners in the Second Annua lFlorida Hardcore Band Poll (yeah, I'm the only on ethat votes)- an honor that previously went to Cru ecial Truth before they got into heavy metal, Hen-drix, Jim Morrison, smoke bombs, and Van Halen ."Roach & Roll" is a great start for this Gainesvill eband, who, in the course of 6 songs, manage t oinsult women, fags, Cubans, and a few others as well -I guess this makes them the new Meatmen! Of cours eeverything is all done in fun . The music is good ,mid-tempo garage punk played with plenty of trashappeal- a great grundgy sound! There are two bona .-fide classics here, as well- "I Hate The Sunshin eState" and "Now You're Gonna Die" . A must, so writ eto them at 110 NW 39 Ave. #73-A, Gainesville, FL32601 . (BOZ )

IKE YARD "A FACT" (FACTORY LP)--- Well I can' tsay this is better than the last thing they di dbecause I've never heard them before . I like it .The first time you listen to it you wonder ifthere was any kind of structure to it . Vocals anddrums are very spare with synthisizers dominat-ing . Sort of like a misaligned arty D .A .F . minusthe pop . Great background music . (CRAIG VAGUE )

THE MORTAL MICRONOTZ (FRESH LP)--- Not quite hard -core, this is dyed-in-the-garage punk rock fromLawrence, Kansas . The songs are great (with mel-odies and everything) and "Old Lady Sloan" ha slyrics by William Burroughs ; how much cooler canyou get? "It's Not Alright" is the standoutthough .

(CZ )

RANK AND FILE "SUNDOWN" (SLASHLP)---Slash is def-initely on a hot streak . . .first the Dream Syndicateand now this . In case you didn't alrea?y know,Rank and File include 2 ex-members of that greatL .A . punk band, the Dils . They play country musi cnow, but even though they try to play it right andreal authentic, they just don't have it togetheryet, which is what makes this LP so charming . It' sas if they just finished recording "I Hate Th eRich", and then decided punk rock sucks so the yagreed that country music would piss off their fan sthe most so they practice for a month and this isthe end result . Entertaining stuff. (BOZ )

RIKK AGNEW "ALL BY MYSELF" (FRONTIER LP)---The nor -mally consistent Frontier hits an all-time low withthis release . Former Adolescent Rikk plays every -thing himself here . This self-indulgent work show spractically no spark of life, spirit, or purpose. If you haven't already, pass on this and check ou tthe Adolescents album also on Frontier) instead-you'd be much better off . CULTURCIDE "YEAR ONE" (CIA cassette)--- Look-ing at the pumkin .headed stickman on the cove rI had a feeling this wasn't pop . It's more likewild, disorientating music (with some kind o fstructure) . Now you know . exactly what it sound slike, right? It's really hard to describe . Thevocalist reminds me of Throbbing Gristle, eve nthe mix on his voice seems similar . Lyrics aregood. They use noise, guitars, tapes, synthsizers ,and rhythm machines, I might have missed some -thing . It's not superbly extra-ordinary nor i sit utter garbage either . The tape comes in anLP sleeve which is a great marketing idea .Songs are not listed nor are there any lyricsheets . Quality of the tape itself seems decent .(CRAIG VAGUE )

RIOT "RESTLESS BREED", SHOES" BOOMERANG " , MOTLEYCUE "TOO FAST FOR LOVE" (ELEKTRALP'S)---How thehell did we ever get on an Elektra mailing list?Either we've finally made the big time (are youkidding?-Ed .) or somebody in the industry is hurt-ing for press coverage . Anyway, these three album sare 3 perfect examples of how the capitalist pro-fit motive has finally killed any originality with-in current American mainstream music- and beside sthat all I got was $3 in trade for these losers .(BOZ )

VARIOUS ARTISTS "CHARRED REMAINS" "MEAT-HOUSE" (both VERSION SOUND CASSETTES)-- -Two solid introductions to the American pun kunderground scene and what a healthy scene i tis . . . Batillion of Saints, Sin 34, Rebe lTruth, Double 0, Law and Order, Void, Di eKruzen bands from not only L .A ., D.C . ,and N .Y ., but Toledo, Maryland, Clovis, N .J . ,Madison, Arizona, and Ohio as well . Thesound quality of these tapes is pretty goo dand the price is right (cheap) so if you'r eat all interested in what's going on i nGarageland U .S,A . send $6 per tape t oVersion Sound c P .O . VARIOUS "VORTEX'- MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK (NEU-TRALLP)---The artists within are virtually a Who' sWho of the NY underground/art/noise scene- Lydi aLunch, John Lurie, Adele Bertei, Kristion Hoffman ,etc . . . This is a soundtrack from Scott B and Bet hB's first 16mm film, which stars Lydia Lunch . As arecord, this doesn't quite make it- pseudo-jazzdoodlings, bits of synth noise, some art disco ,etc . . . Regardless, I'm still dying to see the moviewhich should be premiering in Miami sometime in1988. (BOZ)

RUBBER RODEO (EATEP)---Straight from Rhode Islandcountry (and the same art school that brought yo uthe T . Heads)- it's five guys and a doll who dothe wildest western music yet . No- don't ge tscared off- even though they call it "Gene Autrymeets Devo"- I don't think anyone who's heard thei rversion of "Jolene" has had a bad word for thes every serious C&W'ers . The six songs on this E P(four originals, two covers)only leave me wantingmore .' Their pining, psychedelic (oops, overuse dword) pedal steel and lonesome guitar and vocal sturned me around but quick- I don't care if youhate C&W (I do, but I can appreciate camp when Ihear it)you'll still love RR. (But I wish thei rcomic-book style press release was included inevery copy- it's a hilarious cache of reviews, fak eads, and even an editorial by a "real kicker" fro mSan Antone) (CHRISTOPHER )

VARIOUS "NOT SO QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT" (ALTER -NATIVE TENTACLESLP)---What can I possible sayabout this? I'm sure most of our readers are al-ready familiar with this- for those of you whoaren't, this double-album compilation features 42different Northern California and Nevada punk band salong with a fanzine . As unbelievable as it maysound I like almost everything here- no shit-there's hardly a klunker to be found. This ranks upthere with "Flex Your Head' as one of the mos tessentially essential (heavy adjectives, huh?) com-pilations of the year . (BOZ )

SPORT OF KINGS "SING MARY SING" (THERMIDOR LP)---Pretty good, but not as good as I had thought . Ilike the moody Cure/New Order sound on some of thesongs here . This is a fairly well thought-out al-bum, but it does rely a bit too heavily on a for-mula, and therefore lacks a feeling of spontaneity ,but then again, when was the last time the Curesounded spontaneous? Overall, I like this and ithas a pretty art cover as well, which will impresssomebody someday. (BOZ )

JR . CHEMISTS/LES SELDOMS "ARIZONA DISEASE" : TO MTADLOCK "BODY AD" (BOTH SUBTERRANEAN 7")--- TheSub Wrecks have returned with two new releases-one never knows what to expect from these peo-ple, does one? Let's see Tom Tadlock seems t obe an interesting enough guy (he's worked wit hTuxedomoon, Minimal Man and others) but I don' tsee much point to his record at all . Yeah Idon't doubt his credentials but this piece o felectronic C&W muzak does nothing for me- it' sdifferent alright but that doesn't mean it' sany good . On the other hand "Arizona Disease "presents us with two new bands from the stat ethat has given us the Meat Puppets . Two prim-ative trios- two different minimalist approache sto the desert life and rock n' roll that des-erve to be heard . Check this one out . (BOZ )

FLIPPER "GET AWAY"/"THE OLD LADY THAT SWALLOWE DTHEFLY'(SUBTERRANEAN7")--- I love Flipper iffor no other reason that all these new "loudfast nothing else rules punks' hate them caus ethey play slow . This record is fucking grea tjust like everything else I've ever heard b yFlipper . "Get Away" is Flipper at their mos tcommercial (ha ha ha) and it's a sure hit if I'veever heard one . "The Old Lady" is sinister ,humourous, and annoying a perverse bedtimestory with feedback drone . If you haven't caughton yet this record will change your life . (BOZ )BROADCAST (FRESH SOUNDS7"EP)---Undergrads fromthe Ubu school of noise- a mixture of influences :funk, punk, jazz, etc . . . Unfortunately, they're abit lacking in the humor department- maybe if thes eguys would relax a bit they'd be alright . (Box 36,Lawrence, KS 66044) (BOZ)

35ARTICLES OF FAITH "WHAT WE WANT IS FREE "(VERSION SOUND7")--- Yes folks there's moreto Chicago than the Effigies and you prob-ably already knew that if you read DaveRead's article last issue. Like the Effigie sAOF place more emphasis on the "song" ratherthan just pure speed- I mean everybody playsfast these days don't they? This is a fin edebut and I hope we will be hearing morefrom this good intelligent band. (P .O. Box174, Xenia, Ohio 45385) (BOZ )MISSION OF BURMA "VS ." (ACE OF HEARTSLP)---If you're familar with M .O .B . and likedwhat you heard you'll like this . If you'restill unfamilar with M.O .B read Randy's in-terview elsewhere to spark your interest .As for me I like M .O .B . slot and this is thei rbest cause it's an LP and has more on it .(what a descriptive review- WOW!) (BOZ )

SECTION 25 "THE BEAST" (FACTORY 12"EP)---This is one Factory band that has never reallythrilled me but they could wind up as one o fthe last decent things Factory has got left .This must truly be listened to at least 5times before it begins to take on character ."The Beast" is my favorite . . . it's long andheavy on the atmosphere and is built aroundseveral minor climaxes (what's a minorclimax?) . Good for late night and earl yhung over mornings .

(BOZ )DANNY& THE PARKINS SISTERS (MODERN MASTERS 12 "EP)--- The cover to this is definetly the waviest !She music is more like the B52s meet Teenage Jesusand the Jerks . Eight funny endearing little dit-ties (avante noise wave) with heavy titles like"War (Is On Your Doorstep)", "Girls Rule" and"This World Is Bleak" . A "fun" record . (BOZ)

THE HAPPY FAMILY "THE MAN ON YOUR STREET" (4AD LP )---Another smart package from 4AD, which is, inci-dentally one of my top 5 favorite labels (the othersif you're interested, are : Subterranean/Thermidor ,Crass, Dischord, and Slash/Ruby) . The Happy Familyhave improved upon their enjoyable initial attempt("Puritans" EP)- this LP even has a theme and storyto follow no less(we could call it a mini-opera,but that would be too un-hip) . Musically, theyshare much in common with bands like the MonochromeSet and Joseph K (they're related, you know) -quirky and eccentric British pop.If I was assigningratings to records, this would get at least an A- .(BOZ )

SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES"AKISS IN THE DREAMHOUSE "POLYDOR LP---Yes, folks, it's OUT! It's finally

here (as if all of you didn't know already)- I cannow sleep again at night . . .no more 'wondering' and'waiting' . I was beginning to worry until I finallysaw the cover . . .I couldn't believe it. . .their bes tcoveryet! Well, that was weeks (months?) ago . . .needless to say, this album has since become a partof my life . OK to be honest, this is not the bes tSiouxsie ever (side one of 'Join Hands" is) . . . JohnMcGeoch is lost somewhere (someone should hav eturned up the knobs) . . .I hate 'fake' jazz songs like"Cocoon" cause they all remind me of 'Jimmy Jazz" -the worst Clash song ever (next to all the songs on"Combat Rot") . . .and I like Siouxsie's hair betterup than down likw the way she wears it now . Othe rthan that, this is another perfecto album . My fav-orites are "Painted Bird", "Green Fingers", Cas-cade', "She's a Carnival", "Obsession", the bits o fbackwards/sideways music between various tracks ,"Melt " , and one or two others that I like as well .You can best compare the album to "Kaleidoscope "if you wish . Yes indeed! . . . The amazing Banshee shave kept it up pretty well, haven't they? How manyother ' 77 bands can compare, I ask you? Let's see . . .the Clash should have called it quits after "LondonCalling ' (excuse me, Rage), the Jam knew what wa sbest for them before further humiliating themselve s(it's OK, Walter), the Damned only make comedy al-bums now, and although the Fall still sound good ,that shouldn't be too hard to do, since they've bee nplaying practically the same song for 5 years now.The winner is obvious- 5 absolutely incredible al -bums (or 7 if you count the "Love In A Void" boo tand the 'Singles" package) . GOSH! I guess tha tmakes them the biggest thing since . . .shall I daresay it? (Go ahead, you've already made a fool ou tof yourself) . . .Yes! Siouxsie & The Banshees are th ebiggest thing since . . .THE BEATLES!!! Siouxsie's #1! !Yeah! Hooray! Cheers! Way to Go! . . .just rememberwhere you heard it first . (BOZ )

G .G . ALLIN "NO RULES" (ORANGE 7" EP)---OK garagepunk from up north . There's 4 songs here, all ofwhich are pretty basic in style . This is a bit to opredictable for my tastes . (639 Broadway,Box 902 ,NY,NY 10012) (BOZ)

VARIOUS ARTISTS "IN FULL CRY" (TAKE IT MAG FLEX I--- Any sampler where theFlesheaters are the

weak link has gotta be great, and this sure is .Tex & the Horseheads' "Got Love if You Want It "features Jeffrey Lee Pierce (backing Linda "Tex "Jones) in aworkout that's as insane as anythin gthe Gun Club has done thus far . The Meat Puppet s"Teenagers" kicks off as a thrash frenzy, thensettles into an acoustic thing that's like vin-tage Jefferson Airplane . And River of Fever "isn't bad at all, just not as good as I expecte dfrom the Flesheaters . (39 Union St . #2 Brighton ,MA . 02135)

(CZ )

RF7 FALL IN" (SMOKE SEVEN 12"EP)--- A greatheavy furious sound . Of course the fact that it' sproduced by Geza X doesn't hurt either . Thelyrics deal with a variety of topics includingthe "new" army ("Fall In " ), the perils of cok e("Vampire Lady"), and some of the pitfalls ofMarxism ( "Revolutionary Worker") . A solid effort .(BOZ )

EVEN WORSE "MOUSE OR RAT?"/"1984" (WORSE THAN YOU211-- llthough I miss former lead singer ,Rebecca (there's just not enough girls in thesebands nowadays) this is still a good record . Kenis their new lead singer and I like him too ."Mouse or Rat" is the best thing here (I gues sthat's why it's the A side - WOW!) - good song ,melody, solid riffs and"straightforward morepersonal we don't always have to be politicalto be punk" lyrics . The flip is slower and morepolitical . Good vinyl and packaging. (BOZ )(249 Eldridge St . Box 14 NY, NY 10002 . )VARIOUS ARTISTS "SUDDEN DEATH" (SMOKE SEVEN LP)- -With all the West Coast compilations on the mar-ket it's often difficult deciding which is bes tto get . This is one of the better ones- it's wellput together and includes a number of hot band splus plenty of music for your dollar . Bands inclu-de J .F .A ., the Demented, Red Kross, Sin 4 ( oneof my new fayes),, Moral Decay and more . heRed Cross selections are worth the price of ad -mission by themselves .

(BOZ )

EINSTEIN'S RICEBOYS "MILK OF AMNESIA' (PLUTO /NO EXITLP)--- From Milwaukee, these guys rec-ently relocated down here (God only knows why )and brought this LP with them . Recorded in 1981 ,when the band was a trio, the LP show off some o fthe most unrelenting smart-ass lyrics this side o fthe Eat, coupled to music that's quirky and gloo-my simultaneously (also a bit thin) . The presen tday quartet has got a much fuller sound that i simpressive ; but at the cheap prices I've seen fo rthis one, "Eat Your House" is worth the price o fadmission . (14100 Old Cutler Rd, Miami, F1 33158 )

(CZ )

LOST GENERATION "NEVER WORK" (INCAS 7"EP)---Thisband hails from Bridgeport, Ct . "Never Work" is aslower 0i type song with an unemployment theme . Toostraightforward for me . Side two features 3 faste rtunes- more thrash-like than side one . My favorit ehere is "Mind Control'- an anti-heroin song . (272Benham Ave ., Bridgeport, Ct . 06604) (BOZ )

REALLY RED "NOBODY RULES . OK" (C .I .A. 7" EP)---No-thing new here, just another excellent collectionfrom Really Red. This Houston punk band has it all ;excellent lyrics, catchy material, and a great pow-erful, driving sound . If you liked any of theirother things, this won't disappoint you . (BOZ)

37?OP-O-PIES "THE WHITE EP" (415 12"EP)--- Twoversions of the Greatful Dead's "Truckin'"? Ohboy . The rap(!) version works too well to be funny -play it to offend your wasted Dead Head friends ,and save the other version for yourself, wherethey pump some life into that tired old shuffle .The rest of the stuff follows in that vein ,vaguely familar but livley, pumped-up garagerock . Hooked up to titles like "The Catholic sAre Attacking" and "Fascists Eat Donuts", how canyou lose?

(CZ )THE JAM "BEAT SURRENDER" . "DIG THE NEW BREAD "(PQLYDOR EP &LP)--- A nice package, an OK re .cording, a nice selection that wisely favors "AllMod Cons', the live LP is the band's farewell tothe diehard ; a farewell that came not a momen ttoo soon from a band seriously in need of direc-tion. "Beat Surrender" is a cool song and "Mov eOn Up' is another okay Motown cover, but th erest of their final EP is a pretty sad shadow ofpast glory . Let's hear it for going out in style .THE THREE0' CLOCK"BAROQUEHOEDOWN" (FRONTIE R

Time for another record roundup . . . where do Istart? How bout the Fartz? OK sounds good to me -I've never heard their much raved about EP bu t"World Full of Hate"(Alternative Tentacles LP )is fucking excellent . . . a hyper adrenalin heavymetal attack . . . heavy duty thrashout . Greatpackaging and cover too!! The Bad Brains got anew one (Important 12") out produced by the un-llkley Ric Ocasek . More Jah preachings but a tleast their HC stuff sounds good- but are they i nthis for the money, the religion or what? Ne wPANTHER BURNS is called " Blow Your Top " and Icouldn"t have said it better myself . . . IT BLOWS !As a whole this Animal stuff is pretty dissa-pointing- the same holds true for the GUN CLU Band JAMES CHANCE as well . Finally got a hold ofthe EPILEPTICS 1970's EP(Spiderleg 7") who aresort of like an early version of FLUX OF PIN KINDIANS . If you like FLUX as much as I do youwill love this but the main question is whe nwill we ever see the new FLUX album? Lates tCRASS single is "Hoe Does It Feel" (Crass 7 " ) . . .another winner! Side two features Eve Libertin ewho I now like almost as much as Steve Ignorant(one of the best voices in punk- the guy trulycan't sing!) . In the same vein the new PoisionGirls' "Where's the Pleasure?" (Xintrix LP) hassome good moments and if you're a fan you wouldn' tbe caught without it . However I'm more impresse dby Rubella Ballet (Xintrix 7" HP) and their greatbig beat/dance/funk/punk debut called "Balle tDance" . I love those voices and I also hearthat they're great dressers too or at leastthat's what they said in Zig Zag (I'd truly belost without the English Press) . We'll probabl ynever read about SIN 34 in NME but fuck e m

38cause they got a great little EP out called"Die Laughing" on their own label, Spinhead .This L .A . hardcore band is fronted by the grea tJulie . Lets see more girls in these bands now-I'm starting to get sick of all this male jockposing . The latest from the BLUE ORCHIDS i stheir "Agents of Change" EP (Rough Trade 12") .I still like them but this is much more subtleand laid back from what we've become used to butit dines sort of grow on you after awhile .Speaking of laid back there's always the WEEKEN DLP called "La Variete" (Rough Trade) . I mustadmit some of this puts me to sleep but overal lit's rather nice . I still like Allison best inthe YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS but this would probablybe equally as fun if only I knew how to samb abut some friends of mine say fuck that every-one knows that the sambas for wimps- we onlyslam, skank, and mosh around here . Well inthat case how bout the new DISCHARGE singl ecalled "State Violence State Control' which isanother goodie from this great band . Yes wecover it all here in Suburban Relapse from mach orock to wimp rock- isn't that great? Have you heardthe FAITH/VOID LP (Bischord)? The FAITH are nobig deal- pretty average thrash . VOID (R .I .P.) onthe other hand are absolutley amazing- the ul-timate punk/heavy metal fusion . This is right upthere with the FARTZ- no actually I like thi seven better . The new A CERTAIN RATIO (FactoryLP) is a big let down after the wonderfu l"Sextet" . Martha's no longer in the group an dthe dreamy/spacey sound of "Sextet" has bee npushed aside in favor of that big funk beat whic hmeans that now ACA sounds just like everybodyelse . Other bands that have let me down thi syear include WAR!, MISFITS, ORANGE JUICE, AZTECCAMERA, and the EAT for not putting out thei rLP this year (or even a single for that matter) .The new CURE single has sell-out written allr

over it . It's called "Let's Go to Bed" (fiction12 " ) but you know what I don't care cause it'sfucking great . It's a big fun funk dance tuneand Robert hasn't sounded happier in a longtime and I'm real happy for him too . So there .The URBATIONS from Detriot also have a danc edisc out called "The Whip " (Wild Child 7 " )which is a'R&B party disc which I don't likeat all . If you must you can get it by writin gto P .O .Box 15422 detriot, MI 48215 . Speakingof dance shit check out Island's"Genius of Rap "compilation . Larry C definetly has a poin tcause alot of this stuff is definetly ALRITE !My favorites are beside GRANDMASTER FLASH ,AFRIKA BAMBAATTAA & THE JAllY 5 and T/SK IVALLEY. There's also cool shit coming out ofAfrica these days (yes Sublapse is truly aninternational publication) . Worth looking intoare these Mango releases : KING SUNNY ADE &HIS AFRICAN BEATS, "Ju Ju Music" (no relationto the Banshees) and "Sound D'Afrique" whichis a compilation including things from Zaire ,Ivory Coast, and Upper Volta (there's also asecond volume out) . Believe me you don't needback issues of National Geographic to appreciat ewhat's going on here . As we travel back t oAmerica we find that the NEGATIVE APPROACH EPis finally out (Touch & Go) and it's everythingwe've ever hoped it could be . Super thrashburnout

. . it's fast, fast, fast and is upthere with all the other T&G goodies like theNecros and Meatmen . Also worth checking intois the first LP by the SUBHUMANS (not the bunc hfrom Canada) and it's called "The Day the CountryDied" (Spiderleg LP) and it's pretty decentBritish anarchist punk rock . Still there's no–thing on it as great as their singles but ifyou liked those you'll still probably likethis . Well that's about it for now THE END. (BOZ )P .S . The Flux LP is out- review next time !
