informative classes to students, provide law related counseling and are

liaisons between the school and the Police Department.

-­‐ Hawaii Isle Police Activities League (HI-PAL) - Provides social and athletic

activities for the youth of Hawaii between the ages of 5 and 17. A safe

environment that teaches moral and social values, such as sportsmanship

, fair play, teamwork, respect for authority, self discipline and the benefits

of hard work, while having fun.

-­‐ Community Helpers - A police officer will visit a requesting school, both

public & private, covering pre-school nurseries and kiindergarted thru 3rd

grade to teach youngsters the role of the police officer and his duties.

-­‐ Community Safety - The Police Department provides information and

presentations on several crime prevention and safety topics, such as

Personal Safety, Robbery Readiness, Safety for Senior Citizens, Theft and

Scams and Workplace Violence. These presentations are available to

individuals, community groups, schools and businesses.

-­‐ Crime Stoppers/Student Crime Stoppers - The Student Crime Stoppers

program allows students from participating schools to report

anonymously illegal activity on or off campus as well as school violations.

Participating schools include: Waiakea High School, Pahoa Middle and

High School, Ka'u Middle and High School, Kona, Waena, Hawaii

Academy of Arts and Science and Hilo High School.

-­‐ Drug Awareness -A drug awareness program with displays and lectures

by experienced Vice Section officers is another service available to the

community. The primary objective of this program is to eliminate or

reduce the use of drugs among young people.

-­‐ Ala Ka'i Na Opio (East Hawaii) & Pu'uhonua Na Opio (West Hawaii),

Emergency Shelters, Emergency shelter programs that provide a

sanctuary to youth ages 12 to 17 for up to 90 days. They learn life skills

including cooking, positive communication skills, personal hygiene, and

socialization skills. Transportation provided to school, appointments, and

program activities.

-­‐ Hui Maka'ala (Group Home) - Long-term residential treatment for youth

ages 12 to 19. The program assists them in developing social skills,

completing the GED, enhancing self-esteem, and gaining self-sufficiency.

-­‐ Youth Service Centers (Prevention Programs) - Located in Hilo, Keeau,

Pahoa, Honoka'a, and Kealakehe. Assists youth ages 5 to 18 through in

school and after school programs including a summer program. The

centers offer educational development, mentoring opportunities, youth

leadership, positive alternative activities, teen pregnancy prevention,

family strengthening, and tobacco and Meth prevention programs.

-­‐ Na Ho'ola Pono (Independent/Transitional Living Skills Program) -

Independent living program that provides life skills to youth ages 12 to

21, teaching self-development, home management, nutrition, personal

finance , literacy, social competency, educational support, and career and

employment exploration and readiness.

-­‐ Ke Kama Pono (Safe House for Girls)- An eight-bed Safe House Group

Home for girls ages 12 to 17. The home provides residential, recreational,

peer­ intensive, pro-social and cultural community-based services. Also

offers individual, group and family counseling to assist in developing

positive peer, family and community relationships.

violence shelters and programs. Children's services include child abuse

-­‐ Services are offered to family and friends of persons addicted to alcohol

and other drugs. Participants learn about addictions and the effects of

addiction on family and other relationships. The focus is on

communication skills and ways to intervene, as well as options available

to family and friends.
