Why is it Important to Recycle Paper? As the Spring semester comes to a close, our desks, backpacks, and work bags are filling up with papers.Syllabuses and class papers, work memos, at home wemay receive the Sunday paper, or campus event flyers...Where does all this paper go? Every year, Americans throw 4.5tons of office paper "away" in the garbage, and every Sunday,500,000 trees are used to produce the 88% of newspapers thatare not recycled. This unrecycled paper contributes to CO2emissions and the masses of stuff collecting in landfills. Justone ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 4.6 cubic yards oflandfill space, and 54 million Btu's of energy. Help CWRU inlessening our impact on the environment by recycling paper oncampus and beyond!

About Us

The Office forSustainability isdedicated to creatingsustainable change oncampus by reducinggreenhouse gasemissions, improvingenergy efficiency, promoting local food, recycling, andsustainable purchasing,as well as advocating forindividual andinstitutional behaviorchange.

which schools are reducing the most and recycling thebest. This is the fifth year that CWRU has participated, while we are not the most competitive school, wehave made significant strides. For this 8-week period,we:

Increased our paper recycling by almost apound per person, to 5.9 lbs/person.Increased our diversion rate to 16.8% - it was11% in 2011! This does not accurately reflectour total University diversion rate sinceRecycleMania only measures certain streams. Our FY14 diversion rate was 22%, and stilldidn’t include all of the streams we divert fromthe landfill.Overall reduced our greenhouse gas emissionsby 233 metric tons of C02 equivalent, or took 46cars off the road.

Ultimately, we encourage everyone to celebraterecycling daily by using less and recycling the rest.Think BEYOND the landfill!
