Abstract: The purpose of this report was to analyze the state of Science question

papers (based on four instructional objectives i.e., Knowledge, Understanding,

Application and Skill) of SA-1 2015 of classes VI, VII and VIII prepared by

teachers of different Govt. JHSs of East, West and North Districts of Sikkim.

Specific objectives were to identify the key problems faced by teachers in

preparing science question paper and to offer recommendation for the same.

Problems were identified regarding the preparation of question paper based on four

instructional objectives (NCERT model based on Bloom’s Taxanomy). The report

recommends the proper orientation programmes for the teachers in order to

develop an increased awareness in them of an educational objectives and the need

to develop the critical higher order skills in children; and equip them with the

requisite skills so that they can contribute to this process more effectively.

1.Introduction

Knowledge as an outcome of education, is no longer believed to be sufficient to

create the kind of citizens needed to effectively cope with the social, economical

and technological changes in the world. At present, in our academic set up, our

teaching-learning and assessment over emphasizes transfer and assessment of

surface level knowledge to a great extent. Most of our school system has

examination which achieves first of Bloom’s objective well but higher order

objectives are ignored to a great extent due to various reasons in spite of its

acceptance as a policy.

In the words of Gardner, “It is of the utmost importance that we recognize and

nurture all of the varied human intelligences, and all of the combinations of

intelligences. We are all so different largely because we all have different

combinations of intelligences. If we recognize this, I think we will have at least a

better chance of dealing appropriately with the many problems that we face in the

world.”

1.1 Purpose

The main purpose of this report is to analyze the science question papers of classes

VI, VII and VIII of different JHS of the state and to find out if these science

question papers truly assess all the important instructional objectives or whether

they only judge the child’s capacity to memorize facts. The report will also

recommend to take up systematic orientation programmes for the teachers in order

to (a) develop an increased awareness in them of an educational objectives and the

need to develop the critical higher order skills in children; and (b) equip them with

the requisite skills so that they can contribute to this process more effectively.

1.2 A brief background on NCERT model of instructional objectives

The NCERT model of classification of objectives is based primarily on Bloom’s

Taxanomy. After many discussions, it was felt that the higher order objectives of

the cognitive domain of Bloom’s Taxanomy had limited applicability at the school

stage, as learners from all sections of society including first generation learners

were present in schools. In view of the above mentioned reasons, the first three

1

Page 6: Submitted by: Satish Chandra Pradhan Lecturer, SCERT, …scertsikkim.in/upload/1470535637REPORT ON QUESTION PAPER ANALYSIS SCIENCE.pdfScience Question paper analysis of classes VI,

objectives of Bloom’s Taxanomy i.e., Knowledge, Understanding and Application

were retained from the Cognitive Domain. The remaining three viz., Analysis,

Synthesis and Evaluation were grouped under the “Application objective” due to

their limited applicability as explained above. The fourth objective which formed a

part of the set of objectives to be achieved was Skill, which was taken from the

Psychomotor Domain as this forms an important component of written exams

(NCERT 2004).

The NCERT model thus comprises of four objectives to be attained in the subject

of Science, which can be evaluated through the written examinations. These are

Knowledge, Understanding, Application and Skill.

1.3 Method of investigation

A checklist based on NCERT model of instructional objectives which is

based primarily on Bloom’s Taxanomy was used as an instrument to

categorize the levels of these questions.

The stipulated design for allocating the percentage of marks to all the four

instructional objectives are as follows:

(i) 30% for knowledge component

(ii) 40% for understanding component

(iii) 20% for application component

(iv) 10% for skill component

25% JHS schools from each districts were selected for the analysis of

science question papers taking care that the schools were selected from

every corner of the state.

i.e.,(i) 17 schools out of 65 schools from East District, 12 schools reported

(ii)12 schools out of 47 schools from West District , 9 schools reported

(iii)5 schools out of 18 schools from North District , 5 schools reported

(iv) 14 schools out of 58 schools from South District, 0 schools reported

Method : science question papers of classes VI, VII and VIII from all the districts

were collected and were analyzed individually keeping in mind the four

instructional objectives. All the instructional objectives were carefully studied and

were presented in a tabular form supported by graphs firstly with individual

schools of all the districts and then district wise followed by comparison of all the

districts.

3. Conclusion/Summary of findings:

The analysis revealed that the

(i)lower order knowledge objective had been assessed to a greater extent than

stipulated in the design.

(ii) questions assessing the higher order objective of application were absent.

(iii) tendency in science subject to assess students for lower order abilities such as

memorization and recall has persisted, even though meaningful learning in science

requires the development of the critical higher order objectives and skills.

In the present context we talk of constructive teaching methods which is based on

the belief that learning occurs as learners are actively involved in a process of

meaning and knowledge construction as opposed to passively receiving

information. Learners are the makers of meaning and knowledge. But on the other

hand when the questions are framed as has been reflected in the findings, there will

be a big mismatch between the constructive approach of teaching and the

assessment.

4. Recommendation: Study brings out the fact that the classroom teachers and

paper setters needed greater clarity on what the instructional objectives stood for

and the intricate distinctions between them.

There is thus a need to take up systematic orientation programmes for these

participants in order to (a) develop an increased awareness in them of an

educational objectives and the need to develop the critical higher order skills in

children; and (b) equip them with the requisite skills so that they can contribute to

this process more effectively.
