Title of your Great Idea Gathering Island

Describe your Great Idea Describe your Great Idea, why it is unique, how it is relevant to The Bays Precinct and, broadly, how it supports the ambition for the Bays Precinct (Limit: 400 words)

A series of connected floating over-water precincts – focused on providing ‘great places’ around recreation, community and culture. An iconic and unique harbour interface experience – ‘over-water’ spaces instead of ‘water side’ or ‘water front’. Iconic and place-making recreational and lifestyle activities that will create a thriving public space - both day and night. The creation of spaces that embrace, celebrate and promote our uniquely Australian lifestyle and culture - past, present and future. A combination of flexible and fixed floating structures that enable the new connections from one side of The Bays to the other while creating innovative destinations over the water. A flexible configuration that can evolve with ongoing growth and development (a mix of barges, pontoons, spoil islands, and semi- permanent structures) and work around the current uses of the harbour (rowing, working harbour etc.). We have developed 2 specific precincts as part of this concept, The Gathering Island and Revival Island. This submission addresses the Gathering Island. This is a collection of over water market places and connections that creates a linkage across Blackwattle Bay. A series of markets will complement the existing fish markets and draw people out onto the water to experience The Bays from another perspective. The central feature is The Central Market , a community meeting place inspired by an Aboriginal corroboree, which is generally focused around a fire and the community gather to share stories and celebrate culture. The Central Market is an interpretation of this – at the centre is an elevated fire feature, surrounded by a community space and marketplace. Does your Great Idea align with Sydney’s Global Competitiveness? How? (Limit: 100 words)

An innovative way to experience Sydney’s lifestyle, produce, culture and harbour in an original floating setting. Australian fresh produce will be the hero. The market will revolve around visitors being able to purchase, cook and enjoy fresh Australian food. Vendors can sell produce straight off boats directly to consumers or set up at stalls throughout. Cooking classes will teach visitors about Australian produce. Settings including communal tables, daybeds and gardens will be provided. When not operating as a community space, the market could be hired for private events. The Indigenous inspiration will capture the interest of international and local visitors.

Does your Great Idea align with Living Bays? How? (Limit: 100 words)

Gathering Island creates a new and vibrant space for residents of The Bays and Sydneysiders. It will be a flexible space – when not operating as a market or hired for private events, Gathering Island would be open to the community, providing an accessible place for all community members to enjoy. The Central Market increases residents’ access to fresh food, contributing to the wellbeing of Sydney’s communities Representatives of the Gadigal people would be involved in the design of The Central Market to ensure the space celebrates their culture and heritage, and this is shared with visitors.

Does your Great Idea align with Housing Choices? How? (Limit: 100 words)

Whilst our idea is not focused on housing options, our concept leaves a significant amount of water front and surrounding land available for residential development. We envision this would include affordable and social housing to create a diverse community. Our over-water spaces will be freely accessible to all community members and will provide spaces for interaction whilst enjoying the iconic Sydney harbour.

Does your Great Idea align with Transport and Infrastructure? How? (Limit: 100 words)

The floating structures of the precinct provide ‘over-water pathways’ across The Bays at different sections providing a more efficient way to travel. These pathways promote the use of active modes of transport such as walking, cycling and kayaking, complementing other modes of transport that operate on and around The Bays. Sustainability is a major focus of the precinct. The precinct structures will be connected via green pathways or floating ‘forests’. These floating forests will create amenity for urban communities, while contributing to the urban green canopy for Sydney. Both the recreational and market spaces will be solar powered.

Does your Great Idea align with Exemplary Urban Places? How? (Limit: 100 words)

Our floating precinct provides a diverse and original range of vibrant, exciting and active exemplary spaces that maintain sensitivity to the local environment and context. The ‘over water’ nature of the precincts provides a unique harbour interface for the community, Sydneysiders, and visitors. The connected floating structures provide a unique way to cross The Bays, and efficiently connect the dispersed communities of The Bays area. The flexible configuration of the floating precinct can evolve with ongoing growth and development (through the mix of barges, pontoons, spoil islands, and semi- permeant structures) and work around the current uses of the harbour.
