Seriousness, comedy and the voiceoverThefilmdealswithseriousissues:mentalandphysicalillness,bereavementandmaritalbreakdown.Oliverlikestomakeoutthatheunderstandstheseissuesandis,inthecaseofhisparents’marriage,abletoseethingsthattheycan’t.

Submarine, Welshness and BritishnessSubmarinewentdownwellat2010’sSundanceFilmFestivalandhassecuredagooddistributiondealintheUSA.ThefilmdoesnotofferthelandmarksorcountryhousesthatmakemanyBritishfilmsattractivetoAmericanaudiences,andyethasmanagedtobesuccessfulthere.

Oneof themost romantic sequences in thefilm takesplaceagainst a very industriallandscape.Ayoadeandhiscinematographercanmaketheindustrial(andpost-industrial)beautiful.
