What is Communication?

• Evoking of a shared or common meaning in another person.

• The activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behaviour.

• It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or a group of living creatures

"The most effective way to unleash the hidden power of the human mind is to provide it with....subliminal messages."

• Subliminal communication works at the subconscious level because the subconscious mind seems to accept things without judgement.

• It can also be called as subliminal perception, which refers to the individuals’ ability to perceive and respond to stimuli that are below the threshold or level of consciousness, which proved to influence thoughts, feelings or actions altogether or separately.

• Subliminal messages are communicated to the subconscious mind of the receiver.

• People unconsciously pick up on subliminal information intended to provoke an emotional response.

Continued….• Example- “Go buy some coke and popcorn.” According to the

cinema owner sales of coke and popcorn went up by some 60%.

• Police and military uniforms subliminally communicate the authority of those wearing them

• Young, beautiful people are often seen in advertisements to communicate the subconscious message that the advertised product is associated with youth and beauty.

Understanding the concept• Subconscious information can be received in many forms, most commonly from

audio to visual.• We are always filtering information out – only processing information that we need

in the present moment in time.• When walking in the street we notice the traffic around us, when walking on the

path we barely take notice of cars passing just a few feet away.• When we are talking to our friends we don’t hear other people’s conversations…

but if we then hear our name spoken by someone outside our group this information does register

• Through subliminal communication one can boost entangle the the subconscious mind and all the processes happening in it.

• Why do we say that when a person is drunk he speaks out the truth? Its because at that moment the subconscious mind is in control of the person and all the feelings that are hidden inside the mind come out

Methods of communicating subliminally

These methods are generally used by companies in marketing and advertising activities:

• Visual stimuli in movies

• Accelerated speech such as Muzak, recorded light background music played through speakers in public places

• Embedded or hidden images in a print advertisement

• Suggestiveness, which is not normally seen at first glance.

The Ethical issue

• Assume that we communicate for the purpose of trying to change a person's behavior either overtly or covertly. As long as this is done in an honest manner, no concern with ethics is involved. But suppose a communication pattern - subliminals - is developed that covertly tries to change our behavior without our consent. Then, concern with ethics is involved.

• Subliminals do in fact manipulate people to do certain things. If this is so, then we have an over-riding issue in ethics - the ultimate invasion of a person's privacy - his mind.

Subliminal message technique in sales

“Show Consent”

Weak: “Do you …?”

Powerful: “To what extent do you …?”

Sometimes one of the most efficient ways to begin a proposal is to introduce it as if you have complete consent. Talk about it in light of how amazing this plan is and how everyone else must already be thinking yes, yes, yes!

Subliminal PersuasionSubliminal persuasion is simply influencing people at a level below their conscious recognition. It is influencing people with more than just words. It is the power of what lies behind or beneath the language. It makes use of the plain word's normal message in combination with a lower level of conscious cognition to effectively influence a person's decision-making or line of thinking.

Why Subliminal Persuasion?• Every time you communicate with words you are sending

other messages non-verbally whether you are aware of them or not. So, why not communicate an effective sales message both verbally and non-verbally?

• A prospect buys when they feel good about the decision to buy.

• Your prospects are evaluating your confidence, competence and your motives during the sales call.

Subliminal Advertising• Subliminal advertising techniques are based on illusions.

• Advertisers use techniques wherein an image or a piece of text is flashed in several ways, several times. It may be flashed in fractions of seconds making it apparently invisible. But these images are sensed at a subconscious level.

• Subliminal advertising is also applied to the audio medium. Back masking is an audio technique in which sounds are recorded backwards on a track.

Logos

• A closer look at some logos reveals subtle, barely there marketing tactics.

• You may have noticed the subliminal features of some of these designs in the past. But have you looked hard enough to see them all?

VAIO• This cool logo for Sony's computers represents

the brand's integration of analog and digital technology. The 'VA' is designed as an analog waveform, the 'IO' is binary code.

Baskin Robbins

This logo, introduced in 2005, cleverly uses the company's initials to advertise its number of ice cream flavors (31).

Toblerone

The dancing bear in the mountain is a tribute to the Swiss town where the chocolate was developed

Amazon• The cleverness of this logo is twofold. The

arrow points from a to z, referring to all that is available on Amazon.com, and it doubles as a satisfied smile (with dimple).

Conclusion• Subliminal Communication is thus used to actually

used to target the subconscious mind of the receiver and to influence thoughts, feelings or actions altogether or separately.

• Companies use subliminal communication in their advertising and sales apart from the traditional methods in to gain an edge over the usual business and promote the brand in different ways.
